Afghan security forces have killed several suspected Taleban fighters in different clashes in the south of the country, the authorities have said. A spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province said dozens of militants tried to storm the police station in the town of Miana Shien. He said 12 Taleban were killed and four policemen injured in the clash.
Clashes with Taleban fighters have also taken place in Helmand and Uruzgan provinces, authorities said.
Armed men hit the police compound in Miana Shien with automatic rifle and machine gun fire at around sundown on Friday, leading to several hours of heavy fighting, officials said. "Four of our policemen were injured but they killed 12 Taleban fighters," said Daud Ahmadi, spokesman for the Kandahar governor. He said police repulsed the attack and the militants took away their dead and wounded as they fled retreated. That has to slow them down - ought to make pursuit easier and allow them to all be killed or wounded. And counted. Why did it not happen?
'District recaptured'
In another incident in the south, a band of militants attacked a police checkpoint in a "hit-and-run" attack in neighbouring Helmand province. Officials say four policemen were wounded and that 18 people were captured and are being questioned. "We believe that at least six of those captured were directly involved in the attack," provincial spokesman Moheedin Khan said.
The Afghan defence ministry reported that at least 15 rebels were killed when dozens of Afghan and coalition troops re-captured a district in the south from Taleban fighters. It said troops dropped by aircraft stormed the remote Chora district in Uruzgan province late on Friday and pushed the Taleban back into the mountains. "At least 15 Taleban bodies were found, and the overall casualties are believed to be 20," the statement said.
A suicide attack in Afghanistan's Kandahar province killed three civilians on Friday evening. The attacker, who was driving a taxi car, detonated the vehicle in the Arghandab district around 7:30 pm local time, said police chief of the district Azmarai. He said three civilians, riding a motorcycle fell victim of the explosion.
Another security official, who wished not to be named, said the three people were coming back to the centre of the city after passing the day at a picnic spot in the district. Friday is off-day in Afghanistan and many residents of the Kandahar province go to enjoy the greenery in Arghandab.
There'll be high fives all around in Quetta over this heroic operation...

Bodies of two Egyptian policemen were found on Friday at the international borderline in Sinai, a security source said. The source, cited by the official Middle East News Agency (MENA), said the two men had been shot, adding that fire arms were found in their possession. He added that investigations into circumstances of their death were underway.
The source added that the two policemen had, apparently, lost their way and crossed the Egyptian-Israeli borders by mistake -- alluding to the possibility that they might have been shot by the Israeli troops.
It seems they might also have been wearing the uniforms by mistake...

Israeli soldiers killed two gunmen dressed as Egyptian army officers who attacked them on Israel's border with Egypt on Friday, an Israeli military spokeswoman said. The gunmen were part of a three-person squad that stormed across the frontier at dawn near Israel's Mount Saguy, opposite the Egyptian border town of Bir el-Main, Lieutenant Michal Luft said. The third gunman fled back over the border, she said.

"The gunmen killed in the clash were in Egyptian military uniforms with officer ranks, which is rare as Egyptian army officers do not generally come to this area," Luft said. She declined to speculate on the identity of the gunmen.

An Egyptian Interior Ministry spokesman said he heard of a clash at Israel's border between three men coming from Egypt and the Israeli military, but said he had not heard they were wearing Egyptian army uniforms. He declined to comment further.

A DESPERATE search is under way for a chemical vest that a British suicide bomber was ready to deploy in a terror attack on London.

Police fear that the strike, using a home-made chemical device, was imminent after an informant told MI5 that he had seen the lethal garment at the home of two young men.

Security chiefs are deeply concerned that there was no sign of the vest inside what they believe is a chemical bomb factory. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yards Anti-Terrorist Branch, said that the raid, codenamed Operation Volga, was ordered in response to specific intelligence. He said that there had been no time to conduct further surveillance, which suggests that the police believed a terrorist was close to launching an attack. The fear is that if chemicals were to be used then a likely target could be a train compartment on the London Underground. Another theory is that a suicide attacker, wearing the vest under a shirt, could trigger the device in a crowded venue, such as a pub full of people watching an England World Cup match.

Initial reports mentioned an explosives or chemical lab, but since then - nothing. Now the only news coming out is about the shooting and investigation of it. I too am starting to wonder if MI5 was 'set up' to cause embarassment and inhibit future actions.
A Greenpeace activist was arrested on Thursday after flying an ultralight aircraft over a French nuclear plant to highlight its vulnerability to a 9/11 style attack from the skies. "This action is aimed at showing how little airspace is protected, and how vulnerable the power plant is," said Yannick Rousselet, a spokesman for the French branch of the environmental group. "Despite what the authorities say, no one has time to react if someone seeks to attack the plant from the air," he said.

The Turkish army has deployed additional troops on the Iraqi border and bombed a village in Kurdistan injuring one person. A source from the Zakhu region said the recent deployment of Turkish reserve troops aims to chase elements from Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) stationed in mountains between Turkey and Iraq. The source added that some areas in the region have been bombarded by the Turkish military several times before. Residents of the border village of La'wi Keizi have been asked to leave their homes, the source added.

One Turkish soldier and four Kurdish separatists were killed during a clash with guerrillas of the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the southeastern city of Sirnak on Friday. The fighting took place in the town of Findik hamlet, stated Sirnak Governor's Office.
A series of explosions and violent acts took place throughout Turkey in the last few months, most of which claimed by organizations related to PKK. Up to 37,000 people were killed as a result of the armed campaign launched by PKK in 1984 to establish an independent Kurdish state in southeast Turkey. PPK is labeled as a terrorist organization by Turkey, European Union (EU) and the United states.

June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian police arrested 12 men and five youths, saying they were members of a terrorist ring that plotted to build bombs to set off in southern Ontario. The group received three metric tons (6,614 pounds) of ammonium nitrate, triple the amount of the substance used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement today.
The group adopted an ideology that was ``inspired by al- Qaeda,'' said Luc Portelance, a member of Canada's spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, during a televised press conference today.
Canada was criticized in November 2002 in an audiotape released purporting to be a message from Osama bin Laden, saying Canada was ``allying themselves with America in attacking us in Afghanistan.'' Al-Qaeda listed five countries for attack including Canada, and has attacked the other four -- the U.S., the U.K., Spain and Australia. ``As we have said on many occasions, Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism,'' Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement from Ottawa. ``Today, Canada's security and intelligence measures worked.''
Toronto's subway system wasn't a target of the group, police said. They declined to say what the intended targets were.
Russ Knocke, a spokesman for U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said there ``is no indication'' the plot spilled over into the U.S.
Those charged will appear in a Toronto court later today, police said. The charges include training for the purposes of terrorism, handling illegal weapons and explosives and using other property for terrorism, said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell. ``It was their intent to use it for a terrorist attack,'' McDonell said.

Fun? Wow! I've been antsy for a week that something was up. Much increased police presence of the roads. Particulary Monday during the TTC stike. More cops than cabs this week. Glad to know why finally.
Are you catching the CBC's muslim U of M professor "anaylst" blaming us all for the muslims hurt feelings? MSM may find that Torontonians are not going to swallow the "victims all" approach their taking. None of our muslims are "oppressed" or "disenfranchised".

Time to grab an umbrella and head down to the local and listen to what the local LLL have to say. CBC just reported that the police will not say this is the work of an islamic fundamentalist group. CBC says we should consider this the work of "some nuts".

The men supposedly discussed terrorist training and bomb plots against military facilities and oil refineries. FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said today there are apparent links between the two American visitors and the police sweep in Canada. There is preliminary indication that some of the Canadian subjects may have had limited contact with the two people recently arrested from Georgia, Kolko said in a statement. As always, we will work with our international partners to review any intelligence gathered and will conduct any appropriate investigation.

Police tactical teams raided several locations in Greater Toronto yesterday as part of what is being described as Canada's largest terrorism investigation since the Air-India bombings.
The RCMP has scheduled a news conference for this morning to announce it has made at least nine arrests under the Anti-terrorism Act, and was still seeking one suspect. Hundreds of officers were involved. The arrests went without incident.
Police would provide no details last night, but a senior intelligence official disclosed this week that "homegrown" terrorists were looking at targets in Canada.
Arrests in Canada have been widely anticipated since the FBI announced in April it had apprehended two Georgia men on terrorism-related charges.

A man has died in an explosion at a Tim Hortons outlet in downtown Toronto on Sunday and the investigation has tied up traffic at one of the city's busiest intersections, police say.
The blast took place just after 1 p.m. EDT at the doughnut store, which is on Yonge Street near the intersection with Bloor Street.
Toronto Police Service Insp. Nick Memme said it was not known yet whether the victim was a customer or an employee.
Memme said the explosion occurred "in the washroom area" at the back of the shop.
Until there's evidence to suggest otherwise, I'm assuming this was an accident or, at most, the work of a lone nut. (If you wanted to carry out a high-profile terror attack in Toronto, a Tim's would have to rank pretty low on the list of targets.) But if terrorists are striking at our Tim Horton's outlets, the wrath of the Canadian people will come down on them hard.
Update: unconfirmed reports say a guy with explosives strapped to his chest walked in just before the explosion. If that's the case, the sole victim is almost certainly the bomber.

Message for CSIS: CANADIAN IMMIGRATION IS BROKEN! You wanna learn what some immigrants are saying nowadays? Plant an agent inside any private security firm in the GTA. You'll soon learn all you need to know.
One problem is this: the government gives prospective immigrants points for possessing certain skills, education, language, etc. They come here thinking they are qualified, but then they can't get certified to work in their fields because of the various barriers put in front of them. The parents cry racism, and the kids become radicalized. I've heard this over and over: "coming to Canada was a mistake." (Funny thing is though, they don't want to leave either though some have expressed an interest in going south to the U.S.).
I'm not against immigrants. For every disillusioned immigrant I've met, there's two that are happy and prosperous. But that's still not acceptable. If you want to examine where this radicalization begins, start with immigration.
One more suggestion. It is not enough to test prospective immigrants on their willingness to accept Canadian values. A tell-tale sign would be to ask what they think of Americans. If they say that they love Canada, but "I hope the Americans die like rats [in Iraq*].", that should be an automatic disqualification. Believe it or not, it's a sentiment I heard quite often. Doesn't bode well if you ask me.

The Tim's incident is bizarre to say the least, but it most certainly wasn't the target of a terrorist bombing plot. There are far more tempting targets nearby: the prominent Jewish Community Centre 5 minutes away (which also houses a coffee shop), Hilel on the U of T campus, and the subway just underneath.
More likely, if it was terrorism, then that particular Tim's was a final prep area or something, and it went horribly wrong for the bomber.

Canadian police have arrested at least 10 people in an anti-terror operation in the Toronto area. The detainees are being held in Pickering, a suburb of the country's biggest city.
A police spokeswoman said that about 400 police officers had taken part in the operation, adding that more arrests were expected. Canadian anti-terror units, or Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams, were involved.

Seventeen Canadian residents were in custody Saturday on terrorism- related charges, including plots to use explosives in attacks on Canadian soil, authorities said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they arrested 12 male adults and five youth and foiled plans for terrorist attacks against targets in southern Ontario.
Officials showed evidence of bomb making materials, a computer hard drive, camouflage uniforms and what appears to be a door with bullet holes in it at a news conference Saturday morning.
"This group took steps to acquire three tons of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said assistant Royal Canadian Mounted Police commissioner Mike McDonell said.
McDonell said that is three times the amount used to blow up the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
The arrests were made Friday, with some 400 officers involved.
McDonell said the suspects were either citizens or residents of Canada and had trained together.
"The men arrested yesterday are Canadian residents from a variety of backgrounds. For various reasons they appeared to have become adherents of a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaida," said Luc Portelance, the assistant director of operations with CSIS _ Canada's spy agency.
Heavily armed police officers ringed the Durham Regional Police Station in the city of Pickering, just east of Toronto, as the suspects were brought in late Friday night in unmarked cars which were drove into an underground garage.
The Toronto Star reported Saturday that Canadian youths in their teens and 20s, upset at the treatment of Muslims worldwide, were among those arrested.
The newspaper said they had trained at a camp north of Toronto and had plotted to attack CSIS's downtown office near the CN Tower, among other targets.
Melisa Leclerc, a spokeswoman for the federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day, had no comment on the arrests.
In March 2004, Ottawa software developer Mohammad Momin Khawaja became the first Canadian charged under the country's Anti-Terrorism Act for alleged activities in Ottawa and London. Khawaja was also named, but not charged, in British for playing a role in a foiled bomb plot. He is being held in an Ottawa detention center, awaiting trial.
The Canadian anti-terrorism law was passed swiftly following the Sept. 11 assaults, particularly after Osama bin-Laden's named Canada one of five so-called Christian nations that should be targeted for acts of terror. The others, reaffirmed in 2004 by his al-Qaida network, were the United States, Britain, Spain and Australian, all of which have been victims of terrorist attacks.
The anti-terrorism law permits the government to brand individuals and organizations as terrorists and gives police the power to make preventive arrests of people suspected of planning a terrorist attack.
Though many view Canada as an unassuming neutral nation that has skirted terrorist attacks, it has suffered its share of aggression, including the 1985 Air India bombing, in which 329 people were killed, most of them Canadian citizens.
Intelligence officials believe at least 50 terror groups now have some presence in the North American nation and have long complained that the country's immigration laws and border security are too weak to weed out potential terrorists.

Thanks, John. The Kingston branch leads me to wonder when the Ottawa cell will be taken down. They are related to the Sudbury branch that El Ahmrei worked with. Was that cleaned out and I missed it? The reach of this goes to Thunder Bay (I'd go with the Sault Ste, Marie border area as suspect), but I can't figure if this cell relates with that one.
I see a gap in takedown, unless this is an offshoot cell.

An Islamic cleric who has been in federal detention for nearly seven months told a judge Thursday he would end his legal fight against a series of immigration charges and be returned to his homeland. But where exactly that homeland is remains unclear.
Abrahim Sheikh Mohamed, who served as an imam at Abu Bakr Mosque in Rainier Valley, has been held without bond since he was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in November. Well-respected among local Somalis, Mohamed has told authorities that he is Somali, born and raised in the war-torn country on the horn of Africa. But during an hourlong hearing before an immigration judge on Thursday, ICE lawyers presented evidence, including a Kenyan ID and passport documents, attempting to prove the imam is actually a Kenyan citizen.
Immigration authorities will begin efforts immediately to deport him there. But as part of the deportation process, the government must prove he is a Kenyan citizen, and Kenya must agree to accept him. If it doesn't, the judge said he could be sent to Somalia, which has no functioning government and, unlike Kenya, no repatriation agreement with the U.S.

SINGAPORE: India on Saturday offered to help safeguard the strategic Malacca Strait and backed a major East-Asian security initiative to enforce "compulsory pilotage" of the channel against pirates and maritime terror.
Outlining New Delhi's support to the initiative mooted jointly by Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said India was willing to assist in the project and share its expertise in maritime security with nations of the region. "India welcomes the three nation initiative on monitoring shipping through compulsory pilotage project of Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia,"
Mukherjee said in his speech at the Shangri La dialogue here. "Subject to the desire of the littoral states, as a major user-state, India would be willing to assist the project to whatever capacity is deemed suitable" the Defence Minister told eminent security experts gathered here for the 5th international Asia Security Summit.
With more than 50 per cent of India's maritime trade passing through the channel, security of the straits is important for India. The Malacca Strait is one of the world's most important and busy waterways with 50,000 ships passing through it each year.
Mukherjee said "other Asia-Pacific countries like Japan, China and South Korea are more dependent on the safe and secure passage through the Straits, where in recent years piracy has posed a major challenge", and hoped maritime terrorism does not follow closely behind".
The Defence Minister spoke after the US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had told strategic experts from Asia, Pacific and Europe that America would remain engaged in the region. Observing that there was a need to increase and strengthen regional cooperation to enhance maritime security, he said India has been working with the nations of the region, both bilaterally and multilaterally through forums such as ASEAN Regional Forum to further strengthen East-Asian sea lane safety.
This coordination, he said, had to be enhanced. "Otherwise as we have seen in the USS Cole bombing incident and recent attacks faced by the Sri Lankan Navy vessels" that a small incident can cause considerable loss of lives and equipment. The Minister also backed the move to set up a Regional Marine Training centre, saying it would help in evolving common operating procedures for the Navies of the region. He also said that New Delhi was taking steps to join the Container Security initiative and had identified the Nava Sheva port, near Mumbai.

Air Force version of BrahMos getting ready
HYDERABAD: The design and initial development of the Air Force version of the BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile have been completed. The system is to be fitted into Sukhoi-30 by the end of next year.
A. Sivathanu Pillai, CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian Joint Venture, told The Hindu here on Friday that the feasibility of incorporating the Air Force version of the missile was complete. The army version would be inducted in two years.
He said the missile had already been installed on one ship and all ships in the future would be fitted with it.
As a first step, three Talwar class ships being built by Russia for the Indian navy would be fitted with the missile.

We need to sell the Indians the Kitty Hawk when it is retired. True, it will not carry the most modern naval aircraft, but the ones it can carry make it ideal for the Malacca Strait. Plus, it would piss off the Chinese to no end - the Indians being the first ones with a functional area coverage carrier in the Strait.

At least four soldiers and two militants were killed and ten others were wounded Friday in a suicide car-bomb explosion in Pakistani tribal region of North Waziristan, bordering Afghanistan, said security officials. An explosive-laden car rammed into a military convoy in Bakka Khel area, near Bannu district, killing four soldiers and two suicide attackers on the spot, officials told KUNA. They said ten soldiers were also wounded, two of them critically, in the suicide explosion.
The incident was second reported in less than two weeks in the area. It comes amid the warning of local Taliban militants, issued last week, to the government of suicide attacks if it did not stop searching at over 100 security checkposts in the South and North Waziristan regions.
On Sunday, militants rammed an explosive-laden car into a military checkpost in North Waziristan agency, injuring three Frontier Core (FC) personnel. The incident was part of the warning. However, according to the official version, an explosion ripped through a car which had been stopped at a check-post for checking.

Police Friday arrested eight militants including an arms smuggler in a raid in Southwestern Baluchistan province and recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition from their possession, officials said.
Salman Syed Mohammad, police officer Quetta, the provincial capital, at a press conference said that a police party acting on a tip off, raided the house in Aminabad area of the city and arrested a notorious smuggler, Azam Raisani, along with seven nationalist militants. He said a large cache of arms and ammunition including 155 RPG rockets, 143 small low explosive tubes, three large low explosive tubes, one LMG tripod, 18934 live rounds of LMG, 13920 live rounds of SMG and three rifles of 303 bores were recovered in the raid.
He said further that Azam Raisani is a notorious gunrunner, who smuggles arms and ammunition from Afghanistan and sells them to various terrorist groups involved in bomb blasts and rocket firings in the province.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The U.S. military said Saturday that it had found no wrongdoing by American troops accused of intentionally killing civilians during a raid in a village north of Baghdad that left up to 13 Iraqis dead.
The investigation of the March 15 attack on a home in the town of Ishaqi was one of three probes into possible misconduct by American troops in Iraq. The investigation of the attack in Ishaqi concluded that the U.S. troops followed normal procedures in raising the level of force after they came under fire while approaching a building where they believed was an al-Qaida terrorist was hiding, said Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, a U.S military spokesman.
Caldwell also acknowledged there were "possibly up to nine collateral deaths" in addition to the four Iraqi deaths that the military announced at the time of the Ishaqi raid. The results of the investigation were released amid questions about the original U.S. report as television stations aired AP Television News footage of a row of dead children in the aftermath of the raid.

Can Russia afford the standard ransom?
A number of Russian diplomats have been abducted by gunmen in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, an Iraqi interior ministry official has said. Some reports said that one Russian had been killed in the attack in the west of the capital, but this has not been officially confirmed.
Police have given conflicting reports of the number of embassy workers taken but the official said it was four. The Russian embassy in Baghdad has declined to comment yet on the case.

I still think the Russians made an error by not using one of their strengths early. That is, wetwork. In an effort complementary to the West, which is squeamish about offing "holy men", the Russians would have been superb in reducing the number of radical Imams in the world.
Not obvious sanction, though. That could be counter-productive. Just make it seem that being a radical Imam, anywhere in the world, just made you very, very unlucky.
The #1 priority of priests of all varieties is not getting themselves killed, even while stimulating their flock to selflessly sacrifice themselves. So they are very keen on keeping up with the news when priest mortality rates start to increase.
And changing the tone of their sermons from hate and violence to peace, love, and brotherhood.

Looks like the Radics/Spetzies are still trying to force an expoansion of the local into the Regional and beyond. Where the Russians are concerned, Russian diploms are traditionally very heavily guarded and watched, even outside of their normal-official duties, and by all accounts had remained so despite the fall of the USSR. A fishy article at best.
Four Iraqi civilians were killed on Friday and 50 were injured in two explosions in one of the busiest market areas of the capital. An Iraqi security source said the two bombs caused damage to a lot of small shops in the Souq Alghazl area, along with several parked vehicles. Eyewitnesses said the two horrific bombings in the early hours today were only minutes apart.
Meanwhile, armed men have assassinated a family of five people in the Al-Dora district in southern Baghdad. An Iraqi security source said the armed men raided a house in the Alskan popular area and shot the whole family in cold blood, a young female survived and has been transferred to hospital, security source added. AL-Dora district has been witnessing assassination attempts and sectarian violence, however it is not yet clear what was the motive for this crime.
In another development, five people were injured including a correspondent for an Egyptian local newspaper who was severely injured from a bomb targeting a police vehicle. A security source said three police men were injured during the attack and two civilians, among them Egyptian correspondent Mohammad Al-Anwar from the AL-Ahram newspaper. The source added all injured were transferred to Red crescent hospital in al Mansour district.

Three Palestinians were killed as Israeli aggression and inter-Palestinian violence persist in the Gaza Strip.

Along the Egyptian-Israeli border, two Palestinian militants were killed, Friday, and one was injured in clashes. An army statement explained, the militants had opened fire at Israeli army soldiers near Saji Mountain in Al-Nageb, southern Israel, before raiding the soldiers' forts. The injured militant returned to Egypt. The army reported no injuries.

In an inter-Palestinian incident Thursday, unidentified militants killed a Palestinian Preventative Force officer. Khodr Afanah, 40, was severely wounded by several gunshots to his body. The father of five bled to death upon reaching Al-Shifa Hospital.

After his death had been announced at the Al-Shati' refugee camp in Gaza, Fatah supporters and security forces established by the Hamas government clashed.

They added, it's one of many falsified statements, at times tagged by "a member of Hamas", others "Yassin's children".
