Canada Arrests 12 Men, 5 Youths in Bomb-Making Plot
2006-06-03
June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian police arrested 12 men and five youths, saying they were members of a terrorist ring that plotted to build bombs to set off in southern Ontario. The group received three metric tons (6,614 pounds) of ammonium nitrate, triple the amount of the substance used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement today.

The group adopted an ideology that was ``inspired by al- Qaeda,'' said Luc Portelance, a member of Canada's spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, during a televised press conference today.

Canada was criticized in November 2002 in an audiotape released purporting to be a message from Osama bin Laden, saying Canada was ``allying themselves with America in attacking us in Afghanistan.'' Al-Qaeda listed five countries for attack including Canada, and has attacked the other four -- the U.S., the U.K., Spain and Australia. ``As we have said on many occasions, Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism,'' Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement from Ottawa. ``Today, Canada's security and intelligence measures worked.''

Toronto's subway system wasn't a target of the group, police said. They declined to say what the intended targets were.

Russ Knocke, a spokesman for U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said there ``is no indication'' the plot spilled over into the U.S.

Those charged will appear in a Toronto court later today, police said. The charges include training for the purposes of terrorism, handling illegal weapons and explosives and using other property for terrorism, said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell. ``It was their intent to use it for a terrorist attack,'' McDonell said.

#26  ALways keep in mind the Gorby-Yeltsin-Putin Doctrine, where Post-USSR Russia reserves its SSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH, PRE-9-11 unilateral and unconditional right to use any means necessary, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO MILITARY FORCE, TO PROTECT THE LIVES OF RUSSIAN CITIZENS AND EMIGRES ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, AND TO DO SO FOR ANY REASON(S) DEEMED TO BE IN RUSSIA'S INTEREST. Well done, Canada. There are assuredly more of these cockroaches hiding in the sewers - go get 'em!

#21  From this article:

A source who asked not to be named said information provided by U.S. officials played a part in the Canadian arrests. An FBI affidavit alleges Amercians Syed Haris Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, both from the Atlanta region, travelled to Toronto in March 2005, meeting with others of interest to U.S. authorities. The men supposedly discussed terrorist training and bomb plots against military facilities and oil refineries. FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said today there are apparent links between the two American visitors and the police sweep in Canada. “There is preliminary indication that some of the Canadian subjects may have had limited contact with the two people recently arrested from Georgia,” Kolko said in a statement. “As always, we will work with our international partners to review any intelligence gathered and will conduct any appropriate investigation.”

Also:

Shareef Abdelhaleen is a 30-year-old unmarried computer programmer of Egyptian descent, Galati said. He emigrated from Egypt at the age of 10 with his father who is now an engineer on contract with Atomic Energy of Canada, the lawyer said.

#19  Bingo JBD, there is a Georgia connection.
Waiting for details.

Dennis Miller now says he knew about the busts "months ago" and he's not worried - we're targeted because we are who we are.

Ipso facto for socialist Dennis. Canadians are evil for sending troops anywhere. Run and hide say some. Ignore say others, the charges are a conspiracy.

#15  Does this mean Canada will listen to the US when we say we're concerned about their immigration policy?

#11  None of our muslims are "oppressed" or "disenfranchised".

But you wouldn't know it when you talk to some of them. I hear cries of racism all the time. The blame should be placed on the broken immigration system here.

#10  Time to grab an umbrella and head down to the local and listen to what the local LLL have to say. TO is a Liberal hornet's nest, I'm interested on the spin they put on one (while looking terrified as they excuse the "victims") I need to know whether this changes their ideas now we've been targeted or whether they're into dhimmitude along with the UK.

CBC just reported that the police will not say this is the work of an islamic fundamentalist group. CBC says we should consider this the work of "some nuts".

Time to turn off the TV, find a beer and see if CBC apoloists are winning.

Twill be a most interesting week, politically.

The Muslim groups are now approaching media to ensure they are not "hurt" and want a full open trial ("if there is one", they say) that must be clear and free of prejudice.

The hand-wringing begins. Need a beer to be able to puke something up in the next hours. I don't like the way the this spin is going.

#7  Fun? Wow! I've been antsy for a week that something was up. Much increased police presence of the roads. Particulary Monday during the TTC stike. More cops than cabs this week. Glad to know why finally.

Are you catching the CBC's muslim U of M professor "anaylst" blaming us all for the muslims hurt feelings? MSM may find that Torontonians are not going to swallow the "victims all" approach their taking. None of our muslims are "oppressed" or "disenfranchised".

#4  The more nations they identify as targets the more thinly they will have to spread their resources - and the stronger will be the reaction against them. Let's hope Canada gets serious with these fanatics now.
