Scrappleface: Murtha offers "Core Values Training" to Insurgents
Congressman John Murtha today offered to give “core values training” to al Qaeda fighters and other members of the Iraqi insurgency to complement a similar Pentagon initiative for U.S. troops.

The Pennsylvania Democrat, a former Marine, said he is concerned that without proper values training the pressure of the illegal American occupation of Iraq might cause otherwise stable insurgents to ‘blow up’, possibly killing innocent civilians.

“I can teach an insurgent how to keep his head about him, when everyone else is losing theirs,” said Rep. Murtha, who served in the Marine Corps.

The former Marine, a Democrat, noted that most insurgents already understand the value of family.

“In the U.S. we have only one annual ‘take your child to work day’, but in Iraq, the children often accompany their freedom-fighting fathers to the job site,” the retired Marine said, “It’s inspiring to see how an Iraqi man treats his home as a refuge and his family as a shield, while our Marines neglect their families so they can run around with their buddies in a foreign country.”

Chavez Urges OPEC to Abandon the Dollar
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Thursday to put an end to the “dictatorship of the dollar.”

Speaking to government ministers and representatives from the 11 OPEC member countries in Caracas, AFP reported Chavez as saying: “The empire will fall this century. The grave is already dug; the day will come to bury it for the good of the world.”

Chavez said that several OPEC countries are considering “using the euro instead of the dollar as the reference currency for the price of oil and international commerce.”

“The dollar is weakening, mainly due to the irresponsible economic policy [of the United States].”

Venezuela is the fourth leading supplier of oil to the US, shipping north 1.5 million barrels a day.

“The last conversation I had with Bill Clinton was when it was still possible to talk with a president of the United States. It’s not that way with the current one, whom I believe is a threat to the world, a real threat,” said Chavez.

“Once again I demand that the US withdraw its troops from Iraq and let that nation live in peace. With the world as a witness, we are asking for an end to the violations committed against the Iraqi people and an end to the threats against the people of Iran.”

#1  Don't forget Hugo. The US is plotting yo kill you" You must toss that in there too. The Yankee's want to murderlize you don't you remember.

The wheels are coming off the Euro if you hadn't noticed. While the US economy grows Old Europe'as stagnates. I don't think the Saudi's and the rest want to buy to many "baskets" of Euros just right now.

Maybe Chinese currency would be a better choice since this is an idea you keep pulling out of your behind.

“You don't need papers for voting”
Medical warning: if your blood boils easily, read this on your laptop while sitting in your freezer.
If an election can turn on a sentence, this could be the one: “You don't need papers for voting.” On Thursday night, Francine Busby, the Democratic candidate for the 50th Congressional District, was speaking before a largely Latino crowd in Escondido when she uttered those words. She said yesterday she simply misspoke.
Uh-huh, sure, Doinks never commit voter fraud, nope, nope ...
But someone taped it and a recording began circulating yesterday. After she made that statement at the meeting, Busby immediately said: “You don't need to be a registered voter to help (the campaign).” She said that subsequent statement was to clarify what she meant.
I think we got it the first time.
The recording, which was played yesterday on Roger Hedgecock's radio talk show, jolted the campaign. Busby, a Cardiff school board member, is in a tight race with Republican Brian Bilbray, a congressman-turned-lobbyist, who has based his campaign on a tough anti-illegal-immigration stance. Busby has focused her campaign on ethics reform. The two are vying to replace Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who was jailed after pleading guilty to taking bribes.

Busby said she was invited to the forum at the Jocelyn Senior Center in Escondido by the leader of a local soccer league. Many of the 50 or so people there were Spanish speakers. Toward the end, a man in the audience asked in Spanish: “I want to help, but I don't have papers.” It was translated and Busby replied: “Everybody can help, yeah, absolutely, you can all help. You don't need papers for voting, you don't need to be a registered voter to help.”

#3  Well, that is what the Open Borders crowd (democrats mostly) want. A new voting base. The blacks and american-latinos are leaving the Democrating party at a fast pace and this is the only way the Dems can see to replace them. "Vote for us and we will give you the gravy train!" Worked for the Black dems with social welfare for the last 60 years, it will work with the illegals if we let the Democrats get away with it.

#5  I was listening to Roger yesterday when he played that every 20 minutes...LOL. She's been a tool of Move-On, the DNC, Emily's List and Soros from Day one - they've spent a fortune taking that one shot to get a Donk in (when the revulsion over Cunningham is still high) in an overwhelmingly Rep district. Her slip exposed her - she's refused to come on Roger's show and face tough questions. A 4 yr School Board member (1 school at K-3rd grade and the other 4-6th grade...they split an elementary to two schools) is all the resume she has for the last 26 yrs, and she wants to go to Congress?

Major Nero Ray Nagin's inarguation parade....
Good to see all those Federal Dollars being put to good use.
YJCMTSUIYT

NEW ORLEANS: New Orleans greeted the first day of hurricane season with prayers and a parade for the mayor who led the city through devastating storms last year. Mayor Ray Nagin swept through the historic narrow streets of the French Quarter in a white horse-drawn carriage surrounded by brass bands and dancing costumed Mardi Gras "Indians" on his way to inauguration for a second term.

On the streets as the parade gathered, Nagin was confident. "We are ready. I am really comfortable. It looks like we met all the critical deadlines," he said, referring to work by the US Army Corps of Engineers to restore the levees protecting New Orleans to pre-Katrina levels or better.

Army fighting rats in India's northeast
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
June 1, 2006

GAUHATI, India (AP) - The Indian army is chasing down a new enemy in the country's remote northeastern state of Manipur _ rats.

There has been an explosion in the rodent population in Manipur and neighboring states in India's northeast _ a region thick with small separatist insurgencies _ and the swarming rodents are destroying crops and eating up tons of grain.

While there are no firm estimates yet of how much damage has been sustained by the rodent incursion, the situation has become so acute that soldiers posted to the area to guard against insurgents have been called in to battle the rats, said an army spokesman, Col. S.D. Goswami.

The infestation is being blamed on the flowering of bamboo, which grows throughout the region. Bamboo in the region flowers once every 48 years, attracting rats, which feed on the flowers and seeds and multiply rapidly, posing a threat to local farmers.

In the 1950s, the last time the bamboo in the region bloomed, the damage to crops by rodents led to a famine in Manipur.
Along with helping hunt and trap rats, "the soldiers are also educating the villagers on pest and rodent control (and) purchasing bamboo affected by flowering to provide some income to the hapless farmers in the area," Goswami said.

The Army has also set up community farms to grow aromatic spice plants such as ginger and turmeric, which keep the rodents away, he said.

Man accused of desecrating Quran
Mughalpura Police registered a case against a man on Friday for setting fire to a copy of the Holy Quran for black magic.
Hmmm... Set fire to Koran for black magick — very bad juju!
Mughalpura resident Anwar Siddiqui told police that he was passing through the street on Friday morning when he saw his neighbour, 45-year-old fruit vendor Abdul Jabbar, sitting in a vacant plot a few yards from his house. Siddiqui said that as he approached Jabbar, he realised that he was burning the Holy Quran and chanting strange verses. He said that he immediately informed the nearby people, at which Jabbar escaped.
Couldn't come up with a charm to protect himself against them, huh?
Deputy Inspector General (Operations) of Police Aamir Zulfiqar Khan said that Jabbar had sent his family to Faisalabad and was carrying out magic incantations in their absence.
Hah! They're not really in Faisalabad. They were in his pocket. He turned the lot of them into mushrooms.
He said that the police had raided several places to arrest Jabbar but had not yet been succeeded.
"Damn the man! It's like he's got an invisibility potion..."

‘Stop music, stop drama and dance’
LAHORE: A handbill widely distributed by the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) in the Punjab University denounced Punjab Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool and Punjab government’s policy to start music and drama courses at higher education institutions. The handbill, distributed after Friday prayers at the main PU mosque and allegedly representing PU students, effused determination to resist secularism and enlightened moderation in educational institutions and called for promoting Islamic ideology on campus. Handwritten posters also sprung up at different spots in the Punjab University saying, “Stop music, Stop drama in the university.”

The IJT and the Muttahida Talaba Mahaz (MTM), an alliance of eight student organisations, have announced a campaign against music and against the governor from today (Saturday), and a referendum on all campuses on the subjects. On the other hand, Punjab Education Minister Mian Imran Masood said about the referendum that the government’s policies could not be stopped. He added that music and drama should be taught, and they were the essence of society.

Trying to demonstrate how ludicrous the protest was, he referred to police and army bands playing music everywhere, mostly so at weddings. He said there was no point interfering with the government and if some religious parties’ youth wings had reservations, they should ask their political wings to raise the issues in parliament. He added that there could be a referendum, but only with permission from the educational institutions. The pamphlet in Urdu, in bold font, asks questions of the governor and begins with Iqbal’s verse praying God to give direction to the misled.

NWFP minister slams 'claims' about polio vaccine
PESHAWAR: Inayatullah, the NWFP health minister, on Friday slammed rumours that the polio vaccine administered during the vaccination drive had ingredients that affected male reproductive system and triggered the onset of puberty in females.

Talking to reporters, Inayatullah said that the polio campaign in NWFP would continue till the eradication of polio from the province. Dr Fauzia Fahim and Dr Masaud, who were present there, said that polio vaccine was totally free from any anti-fertility agent, adding that no such drug had been produced whose effects could last for 25 years. Oestrodiol cannot be stored in human body for such a long time, they added. Inayatullah urged the parents to administer polio drops to their children in the incoming Immunization campaign starting on June 6.

Boeing hopes to sell 126 warplanes to India
Boeing expects to make India an offer for 126 warplanes soon and will be competing against half a dozen other defence firms from the United States and Europe, an executive said on Friday. "We are hopeful to see a request for proposals this summer. Around half a dozen companies will respond to it. We will respond to it," Jim Albaugh, chief executive of Boeing's arms business, told a briefing on the sidelines of a security conference in Singapore.

The United States said in March it was prepared to sell advanced warplanes and other high-tech arms to India after it agreed a landmark civilian nuclear cooperation pact with the South Asian nation. Washington has said it is prepared to offer Lockheed Martin F-16 and Boeing F/A-18 jet fighters to India.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Man kills sisters for 'honour'
Amman - Jordanian police have arrested a man on suspicion of helping his father kill his three sisters in an "honour killing" 12 years ago. Police discovered the crime after a tip-off led them to a makeshift grave in a backyard in Irbid, 80km north of Amman, said higher criminal court prosecutor Mohammed Abu-Ruman. The man is in his mid-twenties.
If he's 25 now, that'd make him 13 at the time of the dirty deed...
He was arrested on Thursday, two days after the grace of his three sisters was found. Abu-Ruman said the man confessed to stabbing his three sisters, aged between 14 and 18. He will face charges for the murders. The coroner's office took two days to exhume the remains of the three women in an attempt to preserve as much evidence as possible, said Abu-Ruman. He said the girls' father had died of natural causes a year after allegedly committing the crime.
Nobody was suspicious when God struck him dead, huh?
Police said the man had told them he and his father believed the girls were "involved in immoral behaviour". The family was living in Iraq at the time. The two men plotted to kill the girls when they returned to Jordan. The men asked the girls to help them dig a 6m-deep hole, telling them it was for an irrigation project. They stabbed them to death the next day and told people the three sisters had gone abroad. The father was married to four women. A day before the murders he convinced the only one of his wives living with him to leave the home.

Pirate Bay - World's Largest BitTorrent Tracker Shutdown!
Police have closed down The Pirate Bay, a Sweden-based file sharing site and one of the most popular websites of its kind in the world. Three people were taken in for questioning after police raids in Sweden on Wednesday. The trio, ages 22, 24 and 28, are suspected of violating property rights legislation, police spokesman Ulf Göranzon said.

Servers connected to the site have been impounded and the site was down on Wednesday afternoon, although the operators of The Pirate Bay have set up a temporary website to provide updates on the situation.

The three men taken in by police were still being questioned on Wednesday afternoon. They all have links to The Pirate Bay. Prosecutors will decide whether to detain the men after they have been questioned. "The suspects are not people who download files, but are people who have relations to the website," Ulf Göranzon told The Local. He would not reveal anything more about the roles that the men played.

#4  Well seeing as when the police came they seized all the servers at the site, many that were in no way related to Piratebay's Bittorent trackers at all, but also including the server of a political party, the stuff is about to hit the fan in Sweden. Their are lawyers sharpening thier knives right now.

Copyright is a good thing and Corperations ought to protect theirs. It is not the job of the US government or the Whitehouse to protect a private parties copyright. It is a civil matter and has been untill a Republican Congress decided it had to protect a bunch of liberal hollweird elites and liberal big label record companies with criminal laws concerning copyrights.

Should the government of the US be wasting good will on this crap for the good of a bunch of Hollywood and record company elites who want the Republicans thrown out and put on trial for war crimes? Does the Congress understand a damn thing at all? Coyprights that last forever now? WTF? 20 years was plenty long. Not for Hollywood and the RIAA it wasn't. Senator Dinsey delivered a nice long extention that in essence makes copyright last forever. Congress bend over backwards to do this stuff but can't find time to address the citizens valid and rightfull concern about an open and unsecured border.

Hollywood and the Big record lables are trying to force us to get entertaimnet according to their stupid, broken and corrupt old model that dates to tyehr 1900's. We live in a different time than those old rules functioned well under. They can't seem to understand they need to reshape the way thety deliver their product and re adjust their pricing model accordingly. Buy they haven't and will not. It's easier to buy politicians including Republican politicians who share nothing in common with the politics of the people in these businesses. These few people are forcing DRM crap and laws that are cutting our competiveness in the digital world in the process because they will not adapt to a new model of digital distribution and lower prices for their mostly crappy product.

Making it easier to buy than steal makes much more sense. But Congress has no sense.

More stupidity. Bittorent trackers contain no Copyright material other than the software that runs them. The Law is an ass, and the Whitehouse is an ass if they are involved in any way. Congress is an ass for getting involved in protecting Hollywierd and the RIAA.

Infernal Lawyers. We would be better off if we strangled 9 out of 10 of them. They are a bigger threat to our "freedom and Demoracy" than OBL is. That is a fact.

#9  I've long considered that copyright law ought to be like mining law. Anybody can claim a stake, but you have to show "improvements", or sell product to a tune of $500 a year, or you lose your claim.

Right now, there are huge libraries of copyrighted material that are just sat on. They refuse to market them, but won't let anyone else market them.

If they don't offer them up for sale, and SELL some, retail, each and every year, then they lose the right of monopoly.

Imagine how huge the market would be if hundreds of thousands of songs, thousands of movies, etc., were suddenly in the public domain.

They still get copyright protection for hot, new material, as long as they want to continue to market it. That's where they get most of their money, anyway.

#10  Moose you are so right. That is why the original copyright law had a 20 year limit. So the knowledge didn't dissappear down the memory hole as is case now. Information and art do no one any good when locked in a vault and 20 years time is plenty of time to profit from the copyrighted material.

Hints of Oil Bonanzas Beneath Arctic Ocean
The studies on Arctic sediment that appear today in the journal Nature tell a dramatic story of polar warming and cooling over millions of years. But what they tell petroleum geologists may be just as striking. Though there is little mention of it in the papers, some scientists involved in the work said the huge amounts of organic material from dead algae and plants embedded in the ancient sedimentary layers suggested that the center of the Arctic Ocean could hold vast oil deposits.

Several of the researchers said they were reluctant to focus on that aspect of the work, saying it would be unfortunate if their climate studies prompted new oil exploration that could liberate more greenhouse gases and further warm the climate. But one of the authors, Henk Brinkhuis of the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, was not shy when he first pointed this out to reporters in 2004. This week, he said he remained confident that the prospect was real. "The entire Arctic rim is already one big exploration machine," Dr. Brinkhuis said. "I was nearly crucified for talking about this by some of the more politically environmentally friendly people out there. But it's a fact."

#1  I commented on this the other day.

The four claimants to any oil resources under the Arctic are the US, Canada, Russia and Denmark. It is a shame no one made an offer to buy Greenland from the Danes in the past for whatever they wanted. Not that the environmentalist whackos would actually let us drill there...

In which case Russia walks away with the prize.

East Timor PM defiant over resignation calls
DILI: East Timor's under-fire prime minister remained defiant on Friday in the face of a growing clamour for his resignation as the capital showed signs of returning to normal after days of violence. Mari Alkatiri, widely blamed for the unrest that followed his sacking of 600 soldiers complaining of ethnic discrimination, flatly rejected calls to step down and demanded that rebel forces hand in their weapons.

"I will not resign," Alkatiri said in an interview with AFP. "There should be a decision by the irregular forces to hand in their weapons and I hope they will participate to help solve this whole problem, this crisis," he added. Rebel commander Major Alfredo Reinado on Thursday became the latest to urge Alkatiri to step down and said he should face an investigation for the killings of nine unarmed police by members of the military. The massacre was apparently the worst single incident of the chaos that has gripped the tiny Asian nation leaving 21 dead, tens of thousands fleeing from their homes and more than 2,000 foreign peacekeepers on the streets.
