Britain
Jailed Muslims angry over pork on menu
Seems the Hook likes cow better
British prison officials have issued a written apology to suspected Muslim terrorist Abu Hamza and others for offering pork as a prison dinner, The Sun reports. Prison governor Geoff Hughes sent a letter of apology to all inmates, saying the mistake should never have happened. Spicy pork chops were described as suitable for Halal diets. Clearly that is nonsense, he wrote.

A prison worker told the newspaper Hamza was livid the Muslim dietary code was ignored. The Muslims saw it as some sort of planned insult to their religion but that's crazy. It was just a mistake, he said. Hughes ordered pork be removed entirely from the prison's meal offerings. Hamza is in London's high-security Belmarsh jail, fighting extradition to the United States to face terror charges.

If there are any Rednecks in that prison, they'll sue the bejeezers out of this guy.

As for Hamza, let me visit him - I'll tkae a couple strips of bacon and a copy of the Koran: tear a couple pages out, rub the bacon on them then eat them - and watch they guy go into a rabid frenzy as I tell him I will be excreting the Quran in it s true for in about 8 hours.

Caribbean-Latin America
Al-Qaida Said to Recruit in Latin America
By OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ
MONTERREY, Mexico -- Governments throughout Mexico and Central America are on alert as evidence grows that al-Qaida members are traveling in the region and looking for recruits to carry out attacks in Latin America -- the potential last frontier for international terrorism.

The territory could be a perfect staging ground for Osama bin Laden's militants, with homegrown rebel groups, drug and people smugglers, and corrupt governments. U.S. officials have long feared al-Qaida could launch an attack from south of the border, and they have been paying closer attention as the number of terror-related incidents has increased since last year.

The strongest possible al-Qaida link is Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, a 29-year-old Saudi pilot suspected of being a terrorist cell leader. The FBI issued a border-wide alert earlier this month for Shukrijumah, saying he may try to cross into Arizona or Texas.

Europe
Oil Accounts for 80% of Iran's European Exports
More than 80 percent of Iran's exports to Europe consist of oil consignments because high tariffs and standards prevent export of other Iranian goods to that continent. Ali Ahani, deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs told the second conference on Iran's economic diplomacy that Iran was currently facing a toned down economic diplomacy in state-run and private sectors. "Experience shows that if state-run bodies used diplomacy to achieve their goals, they will enjoy more bickering power and the country will have more opportunities," he said. Ahani stated that with regard to private sector's activities, Iranian diplomatic missions in European countries did not enjoy high bickering power and in some instances they even disrupted Iran's economic diplomacy. The official said long distance, lack of enough knowledge about the Iranian market and high tariffs were major reasons reducing Iran's role in the American markets. Ahani mentioned laying good grounds for economic cooperation, paving the way for foreign investors and facilitated activities of domestic corporations as major factors for economic advancement of Iran.

#2  "Experience shows that if state-run bodies used diplomacy to achieve their goals, they will enjoy more bickering power and the country will have more opportunities," he said.

However apropos it may be, I do believe the author meant to use the word "bargaining" instead of "bickering." The entire article is utterly void of any relevance due to its attempts at ignoring the principal reason for Iran's relative lack of economic success.

Having a government that oppresses its own people and overtly sponsors the very worst forms of international terrorism makes Iran a global pariah.

This is the problem, not "long distance, lack of enough knowledge about the Iranian market and high tariffs." It's murdering people with bomb vests, truck bombs and other anti-civilian weapons that is at issue. So long as Iran remains incapable of admitting this to themselves, their ultimate destination is history's scrapheap. As it stands, their current obsession with nuclear weapons may get them a free ticket to history's glass recycling bin.

Qazi gets his ticket to Oslo
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Erna Solberg said Thursday that Qazi Hussain Ahmed may enter Norway. Ahmed, whose repeated praise of Osama bin Laden has led several countries, including the Netherlands, to deny him entry, has been invited by the Islamic Cultural Center to lecture in Oslo. Solberg said that Ahmed's presence on the Schengen list (SIS) in connection with the Dutch refusal to admit him did not necessarily mean that he must be denied entry to Norway. Norway did warn the other Schengen nations of their decision. "The government has decided to let freedom of speech weigh most. Qazi stands for extremely controversial opinions that strongly contrast with this government's views, but we have made this decision," Solberg said.
Qazi is all about freedom of speech, baby.
"Such a visit to Norway will increase the pressure on minority communities to take part in public debates and stand up for their opinions," Solberg said.
"And hopefully, they won't get stoned for expressing them."
Progress Party leader Carl I. Hagen, who has recently captured headlines by provoking the Muslim community in general, deplored the ruling. "I fear that he can inspire Muslim fundamentalists that may be in Norway. I also react to Solberg granting an entry permit to someone who opposes democracy in Pakistan and would rather introduce sharia laws and a theocracy like in Iran," Hagen said in a press release.

Americans keen to buy C4's drama of Sept 11
EFL from Telegraph UK hattip to WND
A Channel 4 dramatisation of the September 11 plot through the eyes of the terrorists is likely to be bought by American television. Peter Dale, the channel's head of documentary, said the same US broadcasters who originally pulled out of funding the £2 million film The Hamburg Cell because the subject was too sensitive were now "quite keen" to buy it having seen the finished film. The two-hour drama tells the story of the students-turned-suicide terrorists from their initial meetings in Hamburg through to the moment that they boarded their planes on the day of the attacks.

Indictment in altered passport case (Farida Goolam Mahomed Ahmed)
A South African woman originally suspected of having links to terrorist groups but in the end charged only with being an illegal immigrant pleaded innocent in federal court Friday. Farida Goolam Mahomed Ahmed, 48, faces a possible 15 years in prison and $500,000 in fines if convicted on three counts, including illegal entry into the United States, altering a passport and lying to a federal officer. She has been in custody without bail since July 19 when she was seized at the airport in McAllen, Texas, for not having a visa.

An FBI affidavit said Ahmed admitted she entered the United States illegally by crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico into Texas. In her arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy, Ahmed replied "not guilty" when asked for a plea on the charges. Stacy set her trial for October 12. The quiet court scene contrasted with the ruckus that accompanied her detention in July when leaks and official statements strongly suggested Ahmed was part of the "terrorist" scourge the government says is descending on the United States. Rep. Solomon Ortiz, a Texas Democrat, told reporters last month Ahmed was on a "watch list" for suspected terrorists. The FBI said her passport was missing several pages and she had travel documents that showed she had flown from South Africa to the United Arab Emirates to London and on to Mexico City. But prosecutors have toned down the official rhetoric as the investigation has progressed and moved away from any alleged terrorist connection. "This is an immigration case and we're treating it as one," Assistant U.S. Attorney Don DeGabrielle told reporters after Friday's hearing.
Easier charges to make stick...

Report on general gratifies Muslims
American Muslim groups on Thursday welcomed initial results of an internal Defense Department probe that concluded that Army Lt. Gen. William G. "Jerry" Boykin violated Pentagon rules when he spoke before Christian groups and cast the war on terror as a battle between Judeo-Christian values and Muslim warriors influenced by "a guy named Satan." A draft report expected to be released as soon as next week by acting Army Secretary Les Brownlee has concluded that Boykin, who as deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence is in charge of the hunt for al- Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, violated three regulations, according to senior defense officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. They said Boykin failed to clear his speeches with the Pentagon, did not give audiences a required disclaimer saying he was not speaking for the military and failed to report a travel reimbursement from a religious group.

Dressed in his Army uniform, Boykin told an Oregon religious group in June 2003 that radical Islamists hate the United States "because we're a Christian nation ... and the enemy is a guy named Satan." He told an audience in Florida in January 2003 that a Muslim Somali warlord was captured because "I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol." The United States' "spiritual enemy," Boykin told the Oregon group, "will only be defeated if we come against them in the name of Jesus." Boykin's comments, made to 23 mostly conservative Christian religious groups after January 2002, drew the ire of Muslim groups, who considered them inflammatory and anti-Islam. Some of those same groups on Thursday praised the findings by the Pentagon inspector general's office, as described in news reports. "We welcome the Pentagon's report and urge that any disciplinary action be commensurate with its findings," said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). "General Boykin is free to hold whatever views he wishes, no matter how stereotypical or inaccurate. But he should not use his position of respect in our nation's military to promote those views."

Pentagon officials considered the violations minor, a senior Defense official said on condition of anonymity, and noted that he did not violate any regulations by wearing his uniform at the events. The general wrote an apology in October to those his remarks might have offended. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman declined to comment on the specific findings until the report is released. Another Pentagon spokesman said Boykin would not comment on the findings. Boykin faces punishment that is unlikely to exceed a written reprimand, a second senior defense official said. The report also is expected to say Boykin should be credited with having repeatedly sought advice on the speeches from Pentagon lawyers.

#1  Well, uh, it does seem to be that way - but the Muslims more frequently cast it in that light than we do. They think we're a Christian nation, influenced by the Zionist(TM) Jooos, and that we're the Great Satan. They're free to say that . . .

I'm of a mixed mind as to whether we should have the same viewpoint, though. There's a religious undertone to this, from both our history (as a nation founded on Judeo-Christian principles) and the language of our enemies, and said Judeo-Christian background gives us a good moral basis, but the fight's bigger than that . . . it's Western civilization versus an aggressive seventh century religion suffering from multiple complexes, with an unhealthy smattering of useful idiots and fifth columnists who want the West to embrace what in essence would be its own destruction in the name of multiculturalism thrown in to boot.

Ack, I'm going off on all sorts of random ramblings today. Time to kick myself and get some morning tea, I think . . .

#2  well..as I ranted yesterday, I think it's time western people stopped being so terrified of being accused of proselytizing anytime they point out this obvious fact: The moral aspect of Western Civilization is based on Judeo/Christian values. It's not the other way around. It's the values of faith, hope, charity, forgiveness that were drilled into us as children that makes up the underpinnings of this country great. These are not values that are genetically passed down like the ability to suck on a bottle. They are learned traits. I've worked with Muslim children and they don't grasp these ideas unless they are of Christian heritage.

Are they any different than us physically? No. Am I saying they are incapable of learning these values? No. I'm just saying they are taught to value completely different things. We learned to value these traits because our parents dragged us to Sunday school or otherwise taught us to vaule them.

You don't have to be a holy roller to grasp this concept. Nor should we be afraid to admit it.
Posted by: B || 08/21/2004 12:11 Comments || Top||

#3  Your posts yesterday and today totally rock, B! At least someone has the guts to state the obvious.

The fact of the stability/values of our country CAN and SHOULD be traced to the origins and roots of said stability/values. In the post-modern/post-Christian age, it's incredibly important to have some understanding of this--so that we don't go off trying to reinvent the philiosophical/societal/spiritual "wheel."

Additionally, I find it quite interesting that the people who personally hold to the last vestiges of the values based on the (true) Christian faith (as opposed to religiosity, which actually gave rise to the current LLL), don't have a clue as to where the "trickle down" came from in the first place. And it's even more interesting that the LLL hates the Christians--mostly because of the charlatans masquerading as such, but sometimes because the real ones call them to accountability. They don't like that at all.

If one looks at the tenets and structures--comparing Islam and Christianity--well, it's no contest. Thanks again..

so true! They also hate all Christians because Christians are all so intolerant and bigoted. :-)

Shukrijumah may re-enter the US through Arizona or Texas
The FBI has issued an alert for a suspected al-Qaeda member who may try to cross the U.S. border through Arizona or Texas. Adnan Gulshair El Shukrijumah, 29, is suspected of being an al-Qaeda cell leader and has been wanted by the United States since 2003, authorities said Tuesday. The latest information places him in Honduras with the intent of crossing the U.S.-Mexican border, said Art Werge, a spokesman for the FBI's office in El Paso, Texas. "We certainly don't want him crossing into the United States because his plan is to conduct terror operations," said Werge. "He is believed to be one of the most dangerous cell leaders below the leadership of al-Qaeda." Federal officials also have asked police in Guyana to help find El Shukrijumah, who once lived in the South American country and who still has relatives here. "We showed and distributed wanted posters and bulletins and asked them to be on the lookout just in case he doubles back here," said Dennis Pierce, a legal attache at the FBI's office in neighboring Venezuela.

#4  I really believe we could stop the flood of illegals tomorrow if we wanted to. And we could still have our lawns cut cheap. But the looney leftists, and labor unions would rather turn a blind eye to the illegal status of these hard working people than to provide them with work permits that allow them to work as cheaply as they are willing to work without them.

So instead we leave them at the mercy of dishonest people..to protect them, you see.

#5  Why not offer a BOUNTY of, say $20,000 to any Mexican who informs on a NON-MEXICAN trying to cross into the US, if it results in the US putting the bag on the foreigner. $20,000 in north Mexico would damn near cause a gold rush. #6  provide them with work permits that allow them to work as cheaply as they are willing to work without them.
Thanks but no thanks. France and Germany and Holland tried work permits and look what a disaster they have on their hands now with angry, dis-affected, unemployed and unemployable, work permit immigrants whom they have great difficulty deporting once jobs dry up due to the outcry of human rights activists.

No, work permits are not the answer to stopping the flow of illegal aliens from Mexico. Permits will only serve to add more inefficient paper shuffling silly servants into our useless federal gov't bureaucracy. Also, I'd like to see some welfare folks get off their keysters and mow lawns to earn their stipend before I allow more Hispanic laborers in this country, who promptly have an anchor baby or 4 to stay permanently here and then proceed themselves to join the "bean line."

There is no research anywhere that justifies the high rate of uneducated immigrants that we are legally importing from Mexico and other Third World countries every year, so let's not open the door for yet another sub category of "work permit" types to come in. This is not the 18th or 19th century when we need fields plowed or forests removed or railroads built.Getting Mexico to change itself into a non-corrupt, non-racist, non-oligarchical society is what is needed to stem the flow of illegal Mexicans, who are mainly of non-Spanish descent and are therefore doomed forever to a life of poverty in Mexico as it stands now in Mexico.

We need to militarize our borders. End of story.
Posted by: rex || 08/21/2004 12:51 Comments || Top||

#7  you are probably right about the paper shuffling, but most Mexican immigrants I know are HARD workers, who do more to earn a living here than those of us who have time to sit and post on the net.

If they can have a baby and get on the "bean line" ...whose fault is that?? Certainly not theirs for taking the freebees we're stupid enough to give away, no strings attached. I don't believe in blaming people for doing things that I would do myself if I were in their shoes. And if I was in their shoes I'd like to think I'd have the gumption to do it.

It's a complex problem. But I'm getting to the point where I'd rather see the Europeans and Canadians kept out - rather than the Mexicans.

Canadian women coming to be exploited in the US is horrible. It's the Shame of the North!

#9  But I'm getting to the point where I'd rather see the Europeans and Canadians kept out - rather than the Mexicans.
Where have you been all these years? Teddy Kennedy's reform immigration act of 1965 has accomplished your dream.

As for Mexicans being hard workers...maybe to start with...then it's bean line. Check out the research done by the Center for Immigration
www.cis.org about the unusually high percentage of your mythical "hard working" Hispanic immigrants on welfare. In case you will automatically dismiss this organization as "red-neck" I've got news for you-the founder contributes articles to National Review and Washington Times. Numbers USA www.numbersusa.com is another good search of research about illegal immigration.

As for your mis-informed negative comments about European and Canadian immigrants, wrap your brain around some of these indisputable facts. If it weren't for Canadian, British, Dutch, and Polish, Serbian resistence against the Axis powers during WWII, your sorry ass would be speaking Japanese or German now.
http://web.jjay.cuny.edu/~jobrien/reference/ob62.html

Furthermore, Canadian and European troops constitute the largest contingent of foreign troops to join the USA in the WOT in Afghanistan and the sub-rosa assistence of Canadian frigates and helicopters in the Persian Gulf helped guard US ships from terrorist attacks by sea as well they escorted supply ships for coalition troops. There were Canadian intelligence officers on the ground with the US in Iraq. This information had to be choked out of Chretien in his last days of power because he deluded his own Liberal party and Fraaaance into thinking that Canada gave no support to the US during the Iraq War.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/iraq/canada/canada_role.html

Also, besides the UK European countries like Italy, Poland, Holland, Denmark, Ukraine, Spain had/have troops on the ground fighting shoulder to shoulder with the USA.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/iraq/news/20030327-10.html

On the otherhand, Mexico gave ZERO, I repeat ZERO troop support to the US in Afghanistan or Iraq inspite of having the highly vaulted Federales military and next to zero help in WWII. Mexico has a military numbering approximately 225,000, of which army is the dominant division. Mexico outspends many of the coalition countries including Poland and Ukraine on its military, but still Mexico could not scrounge up even a single Federale to send to either Afghanistan or Iraq, whereas Poland has 2500 troops in Iraq and the Ukraine has 1600.
http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2067rank.html
Mexico used its vote on the Security Council to vote AGAINST the US on the UN resolution regarding Iraq.

Today while our troops are fighting in foreign lands against terrorism, Mexican federales are escorting drug runners and illegals across our border and firing on our border guards thereby contributing to "domestic" terrorism within our nation. Read Michelle Malkin's great article about our "weasel" pseudo ally on our southern border:
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/michellemalkin/mm20030312.shtml

Though we read of 8-12 million illegal aliens, mainly Hispanic, living in our country, only a limited number of illegals have joined the Iraq War effort to get citizenship -the number I recall reading was a couple of hundred men out of how many million eligible illegal Hispanic males???

So take your I hate European/Canadian whitey attitude and stuff it.

International-UN-NGOs
U.K.: U.N. Opposes Heavy Sudan Sanctions
A majority of U.N. Security Council members oppose immediate heavy sanctions on Sudan if it fails to quell ethnic violence in its western Darfur region by a deadline at the end of the month, Britain's Foreign Office said Friday.
"What's the hurry? It's only a few dead darkies..."
Some countries opposed sanctions on principle;
The principle being that countries should be allowed to bump off their own citizens in droves without any interference from the civilized world...
others feared that vested interests in Sudan would be damaged by economic embargoes; and others — including Britain — were wary of giving the impression that the "international community is beating up on the government of Sudan," a senior Foreign Office official said.
Too bad Sudan isn't wary of giving the international community the impression that it's slaughtering its own citizens...
On July 30, the Security Council gave Sudan 30 days to disarm the Arab militia, known as Janjaweed, or face economic or diplomatic punishment.
A stern letter, no doubt...
More than 30,000 people have been killed and a million forced to flee their homes in Darfur, which the United Nations has deemed the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Days before British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw's visit to Sudan, officials briefing reporters Friday said council members were still debating what to do if Sudan misses its deadline — but that swift, severe action was unlikely.
It's the UN we're talking about, so we can assume any action is unlikely...

#1  With the putrid albatross of Rwanda still hung firmly around the UN's neck, one would expect them to show a little more determination about Sudan. Instead, we are treated to the exact same protracted delays costing untold thousands of lives. Kofi Annan should be tried as a war criminal, he is lower than pond scum. Sudan's seat on the UN's Human Rights panel makes a fitting mockery of all that they currently stand for.

#2  one would expect that, Zenster. But then the UN diplomats would have to turn in their 13 year old Sudanese sex slaves, and they have grown fond of them over the last few years.

Which roll?

The brioche smeared with scrambled quail egg and Osetra caviar?

The Kaiser topped with shaved Westphalian ham and Gruyere?

The Parkerhouse with truffled lark's tongue in aspic?

The baugette filled with Parma prosciutto and shaved Romano Reggiano?

Or should they just order one of each in order to avoid any uncertainty?

Southeast Asia
Bali bomber pledges fresh attack
UNREPENTANT Bali bomber Imam Samudra has warned he will continue to wage jihad if a recent constitutional court decision means he is set free. Vowing to carry out more bombings against "unbelievers", Samudra said: "I want to continue my Jihad Fie Sabililah (violent holy struggle). "I want to go to Moro (in the Philippines). I want to go to Afghanistan. I want to go to Israel to kill Sharon."
"I wanna kill! Kill! KILL!"
Speaking from his death-row cell in Bali's Kerobokan prison, Samudra vowed to kill again. "If I get the death penalty, I will die a martyr's death. If I'm free, I'll bomb again. You got it?"
"Otherwise, I'll count muzzle blasts..."
The 33-year-old field commander of the Bali bombings that killed 202, including 88 Australians, said he would "slaughter Bush" if a recent change in Indonesian legislation meant he was released from custody. Last month, Indonesia's constitutional court ruled that the anti-terrorism law under which the Bali bombers were sentenced breached the constitution. It has since been erased from the statute books.
Now they just have to figure if there are any laws on the Indonesian books against killing 202 people...
The court's decision gives the bombers the chance to have their convictions overturned. The court ruled that as Anti-Terrorism Law Number 16 was brought in after the attacks took place, it could not be applied to the Bali bombing case as Indonesia's constitution prohibits prosecution using retroactive laws.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran denies Shamkhani made threats against US (he meant Iceland ..lol)
Please, the mullahs are too much.
Tehran on Saturday disputed remarks by Defence Minister Ali Shamkhani apparently warning of pre-emptive Iranian strikes on US troops in neighbouring countries, claiming they were misinterpreted. "The statements of the defence minister have not been reported accurately — to some extent they have been altered," foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reze Asefi was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA. "We will not sit (with arms folded) to wait for what others will do to us," Shamkhani told Al-Jazeera TV on Wednesday when asked if Iran would respond to a US attack on its nuclear facilities, speaking in Farsi through an interpreter into Arabic. "Some military commanders in Iran are convinced that preventive operations which the Americans talk about are not their monopoly," he added, according to the translator. "America is not the only one present in the region. We are also present, from Khost to Kandahar in Afghanistan; we are present in the Gulf and we can be present in Iraq." But Asefi said there had been "misinterpretations", adding, "Mr Shamkhani said that we would defend our territory and national interests and would allow no one to attack the Islamic republic. "If anyone attacks our country, we will respond with determination." Shamkhani's remarks were seen as an extension of an exchange of threats between Israel and Iran in recent weeks focussing on Iran's nuclear programme.

Iran insists that the programme, centred on the construction of a nuclear power plant at Bushehr, is purely peaceful but the United States and Israel in particular fear it conceals efforts to develop atomic weapons. Speculation has arisen that Israel may strike at Bushehr, in a repeat of its attack against Iraqi nuclear facilities at Osirak in 1981. Shamkhani added: "We will consider any strike against our nuclear installations as an attack on Iran as a whole, and we will retaliate with all our strength. The US military presence (in Iraq) will not become an element of strength (for Washington) at our expense. The opposite is true, because their forces would turn into a hostage" in Iranian hands in the event of an attack, he said.

Earlier in the week, a commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying that Tehran would strike the Israeli reactor at Dimona if Israel attacks the Islamic republic's own burgeoning nuclear facilities. US State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said Iran's concerns that it was threatened by the troops were "unwarranted", and sought to appease what he called Tehran's "rhetoric concerning strikes and counterstrikes over Iran's nuclear programme." "From the United States point of view, this is a programme that is of serious concern and it is something that we are committed to pursuing through diplomatic means, as evidenced by our active diplomacy through the International Atomic Energy Agency," Ereli said. afp

Israel: Nasrallah playing mind-games
Aug. 21st, 2004 10:14 | Updated Aug. 21st, 2004 23:09 JPOST

Israeli security officials on Saturday refused to comment to statements made Friday by Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah to the effect that Israel-Hizbullah prisoner exchange negotiations have resumed. The Israeli officials said that Nasrallah's comments were part of his psychological warfare campaign, Army Radio reported.

Before the return of three IDF soldiers kidnapped and killed by the Hizbullah three years ago, Nasrallah repeatedly played to the emotions of the soldiers' parents, alluding to the possibility that their sons were alive. In the past months, Hizbullah sent bone fragments to Israel, via German mediators, which the Lebanese terrorist group said were the remains of Ron Arad. Tests proved the fragments were not.

Nasrallah — in a speech delivered in Beirut and qcarried by Hizbullah's al-Manar television channel — said that the German mediator Ernst Urhlau has returned to Lebanon and resumed efforts to restart the talks.

Nasrallah did not go into further details saying it might hinder the talks.

"I confirm on this occasion that negotiations are still going on with the German mediator ... but there is a pledge by both sides not to speak in detail about what is going on so that we don't fall into complications," Nasrallah said during a wake in Beirut for the brother of a Hezbollah official.

Urhlau suspended talks in July due to media leaks he said were jeopardizing the talks. He said he would only resume his mediation if both sides unequivocally refrain from leaking unfounded news items to the media.

"I tell Palestinian prisoners and Samir Kantar and all prisoners in Israeli jails you are and you will remain Hizbullah's cause in all fields until we reach the opportunity of relief and liberation," the black-turbaned 'cleric' said.

The first stage of a prisoner swap deal between Hizbullah and Israel was effected in January when 400 Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners were released in exchange for kidnapped Israeli businessman Elhanan Tannenbaum and the bodies of three soldiers, captured in October 2000.

In the framework of the second phase, Israel is to release Haran family murderer Samir Kuntar in return for information on missing Israeli airman Ron Arad.

Hizbullah terrorists 'more highly prepared' than ever for Israel

Special to World Tribune.com
MIDDLE EAST NEWSLINE
Friday, August 20th, 2004

NICOSIA — Hizbullah said it is better prepared than ever for a military confrontation with Israel.

The Iranian-sponsored insurgency group has built a formidable array of defenses and gathered an arsenal in southern Lebanon for an attack on Israel. Hizbullah said its forces have been trained for war with Israel along its border with Lebanon.

"We are now highly prepared to face Israel," Hizbullah deputy secretary-general Naim Qassem said. "We are more highly prepared than at any previous time."

In an interview with the Beirut-based Daily Star, Qassem said Hizbullah has opened a second front against Israel in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. He acknowledged that Hizbullah has provided Palestinian insurgents with financing, training and weaponry.

"The battle with Israel is not at an end," Qassem said on Wednesday. "We are always in expectation of an Israeli attack in Lebanon. That's why Hizbullah continues with its logistics and training to prepare its members for any eventuality in facing attacks by Israel."

Israeli officials said Hizbullah has deployed 12,000 rockets and missiles in Lebanon. The group restructured its command in 2002 amid accelerated training from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

On Aug. 17, the Kuwaiti daily Al Siyassa reported that two cargo aircraft landed in Damascus in early August with 220 missiles for Hizbullah.

The newspaper quoted Syrian opposition sources in London as saying that the enhanced Iranian missiles have a range of between 250 and 350 kilometers and could hit any target in Israel.

Al Siyassa said the missiles were transported in Lebanese and Syrian trucks to three Hizbullah military bases along the Syrian border. The newspaper said the missiles would be used in response to any Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.

In July, Hizbullah accused Israel of assassinating a senior operative, Ghaleb Awali. Alawi was identified by Hizbullah as its liasion with Palestinian insurgency groups.

In the interview, Qassem said Hizbullah sought to fight Israel along any front. He said his group constantly sought to exploit deficiencies in Israel's military.

"We believe we should stand by the side of the Palestinians because it is our cause too, for religious reasons and moral reasons," Qassem said.

"That's why we support the uprising with all the means we can. You can put anything you want under 'all.'"

In an appearance on Wednesday, Qassem rejected U.S. efforts to end the Syrian occupation of Lebanon. He said Washington did not have any right to interfere in Lebanon's domestic or foreign policy.

"We, the Lebanese, have chosen the presence of Syrian troops," Qassem said. "If, one day, we decide that this presence is no longer necessary then they will withdraw. But we believe that they are a necessity for Lebanon."

Meanwhile, Hassan Nasrallah was given a rousing endorsement for his continued leadership of the Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah.

Nasrallah, 44, was elected unanimously to continue for at least another three years as secretary-general of Hizbullah. He has been in the post since 1992.

A Hizbullah statement on Monday said the national congress reelected all of the members of the Shura Council. In turn, the seven-member consultative council chose Nasrallah to remain as chief of the insurgency group. This will be Nasrallah's fifth term.

Nasrallah has been a founding member of Hizbullah, and replaced the late Abbas Mussawi, assassinated by Israel, in 1992. He frequently travels to Teheran to consult with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and ruling clerics regarding Hizbullah strategy.

Under Nasrallah, Hizbullah forced Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon in 2000 and then took over the area. The group, which launches regular attacks on Israeli troops and civilians, was said to have 12,000 rockets and missiles along the Israeli-Lebanese border.

The statement said the Shura Council would announce the portfolios of its members of the new few days.

Hizbullah, regarded by the State Department as the leading Islamic insurgency group in the world, has also participated in Lebanese politics.

The group has nine legislators in the 128-member parliament.(but terrifies the rest of Lebanon)

#2  It's remarkable to me that the Arab mind just never gets it. They prepare for "battle" with technology 2 or 3 generations behind the curve to face a modern army. In their tiny skewed world view, this makes some sort of sense. They believe their belief system makes up the difference - just because. Then, when shit & fan meet, and they're getting whacked at a 20-30 to one rate, they wave a magic wand and bluster that any deaths they cause are "victories" and the stuff of legend. Nothing and no one is off limits - even killing children rates a celebration.

The disconnect is beyond comprehension. A hate-filled hate-based hate-inspired hate-driven "society" that eats, drinks, sleeps, breathes, pisses, and shits hate. They gargle hate and spit hate. Generation upon generation. Endless and pointless. Faux political systems, faux belief systems, faux values, faux bravery, faux bluster, faux honor, faux life. Nothing to save, here.

Boggles. Kill 'em if they even blink funny in your general direction.

#10  Isn't it about time for Israel to do another run of June 5, 1967? Egypt is making idiotic demands with respct to Gaza. Lebanon, as ever, is sequestering Hizbullah and the Palestinians have been begging for a "market correction" for some time now. The festering puss filled sore that surrounds Israel like some mutant ringworm really needs to be cauterized.

A6137, if it isn't anti-Semitic hate that is driving the entire region, pray tell what is it? Israel and the Jews in particular have been the Arabian whipping boy for untold centuries. When is it going to stop? And don't give me any crap about when there's finally a Palestinian state. Does anyone honestly think that this inbred, entrenched Jew hating mentality will evaporate overnight if the roadmap magically gets followed for a change?

mhw, after a certain point, watching grown adults seethe, rankle and simmer in a constant stew of unrelenting desire for genocide just doesn't cut the mustard. Anyone capable of desiring genocide can just as easily imagine themselves being on the receiving end. If this simple logical inversion is beyond the metative capacity of these "poor lackeys," they need to Fuck Off And Die. As with terrorism in general, this world has much more important priorities - like famine, illiteracy & epidemics - than pandering to a bunch of mentally impaired thugs and their goons. If coexistence is so difficult to comprehend, then they have forfeited their right to basic existence.

When you consider the ultimate upshot of what these Arab fanatics want, namely theocracy and global cultural genocide, then it's time to pull the plug. Coexist peacefully or die, no options.

Iran claims report on its preventive operations "distorted"
Iran on Saturday denied a report that it might launch a preemptive attack to prevent a possible raid on its nuclear sites by the United States or Israel, saying the report "distorted" its Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani. Some media reported on Wednesday Shamkhani told the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV that Iran might launch a preemptive strike against US forces in the region to prevent an attack on its nuclear site. The official IRNA Saturday quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi as saying remarks made by Shamkhani on the country's preventive operations have been "distorted." "The Iranian defense minister, in his remarks, stressed that the Islamic Republic defends its territorial integrity and its national interests. However, his remarks have not been quoted precisely and have been misrepresented," Asefi said.

"We will not sit (with arms folded) to wait for what others will do to us," Shamkhani told Al-Jazeera TV when asked if Iran would respond to a US attack on its nuclear facilities, speaking in Farsi through an interpreter into Arabic. "Some military commanders in Iran are convinced that preventive operations which the Americans talk about are not their monopoly,"he added, according to the translator. The US and Israel, accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons secretly, have been threatening to launch a surprising attack upon Iran's atomic power plant at Bushehr. Earlier on Wednesday, Brigadier General Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, deputy commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, warned that Iran would strike Israel's nuclear reactor at Dimona if Israel's threat was materialized.

Terror Networks
Abu Faraj is the new al-Qaeda operations chief
I find this extremely interesting, since back when I was in DC everybody had told me that the head of the military committee had been split into separate tactical (Zarqawi) and strategic (al-Adel) positions. I suppose that there could be some distinction between the head of the military committee and the operations chief, though if there is I'm not sure what it would be.
Abu Faraj Farj, a Libyan al Qaeda leader now being sought in Pakistan, is the new operational chief of al Qaeda and is in close contact with Osama bin Laden, intelligence analysts told ABC News. Recently captured al Qaeda suspects have identified Farj, a former personal assistant to bin Laden, as the person who gave orders for terror attacks, including two assassination attempts against Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in December. Intelligence analysts believe he controls al Qaeda sleeper cells in several countries. Federal law enforcement sources told ABC News that Farj has moved up the chain of command as others in the terror network have been captured or killed. He is believed to be in direct contact with the "tier one" leaders — bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman Zawahiri. "He appears to be the director of operations, which was the role that was performed by Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the man who planned the 9/11 attacks," said Richard Clarke, an ABC News consultant and former national counterterrorism chief.
Not that I would particularly trust Clarke's judgment...
Farj's position indicates al Qaeda continues to be centrally controlled, challenging the notion that its leadership has been scattered.
But not tightly controlled from the center. Communications disruption counts...
"The president and the administration have been saying that two-thirds of the al Qaeda managers have been caught or killed," Clarke said, "and what is now apparent is that while they were caught or killed, they were replaced."
We knew that ...

Iraqis Celebrate Olympic Victory with Stupidity Bullets
Sat Aug 21, 2004 03:57 PM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqis, weary of violence and deprivation, erupted in wild celebration Saturday after their national soccer team beat Australia 1-0 in the Athens Games. Red tracer bullets - fired in joy not anger - lit up the night sky, cars honked and revelers sang and clapped in this battered capital of five million people -- scene of almost daily bloody car bomb and mortar attacks. Firing gunshots into the air is a common way of celebration in Arab countries.
Of course, no mention is made of the routine fatalities connected with this incredibly moronic practice.
The win puts Iraq into the Olympics soccer semi-finals. Since the fall of Saddam Hussein following a U.S.-led invasion last year, Iraqis have had little to cheer about. A fierce anti-American insurgency has killed hundreds and has delayed reconstruction projects.
Wow! None of the usual Reuters spin about "Iraqi citizens killed." Must be because this was written by a sportswriter.

Religious violence averted in Nigeria by being good dhimmis
A religious clash between Christian and Muslim youths, that could have led to loss of lives and property was averted yesterday on the streets of Ilorin by the combined efforts of the police and State Security Services (SSS). The disagreement was over the abrupt termination of Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke's 5-day Crusade because of the Friday Jumat Services.

Iraqi ingrates' footballers' fury at Bush
Friday, 20 August, 2004, 16:45 GMT 17:45 UK
Iraq's successful Olympic football team has launched an outspoken attack on US President George W Bush. Midfielder Salih Sadir said the team - which won its group stage in Greece - was angry it had been used in Mr Bush's re-election campaign ads.
We own your @ss. Get used to it you turf chewing nancy boys.
One accused the US leader of committing "many crimes", and another said he would be fighting US troops if not for Athens.
We'll kill see you when you return.
Their comments were made in a US Sports Illustrated magazine interview.
Sandwiched between some swimsuit pictures, no doubt.
Salih Sadir said he was angry at Mr Bush's campaign adverts showing pictures of the Afghan and Iraqi flags with the words: "At this Olympics there will be two more free nations - and two fewer terrorist regimes".
Any more whining and we'll set up Uday's spring training camp again.
"Iraq as a team does not want Mr Bush to use us for the presidential campaign," said the Iraqi player. "He can find another way to advertise himself." He called for US troops to be withdrawn from Iraq. "We don't wish for the presence of the Americans in our country. We want them to go away."
Sure, let us do all the heavy lifting and then don't even blink as you go to Athens for playtime.
Another star player, 22-year-old Ahmed Manajid, asked: "How will [Mr Bush] meet his god having slaughtered so many men and women? He has committed so many crimes."
A lot easier than all the Iraqi insurgents who have killed more of your countrymen than America ever did.

'Best people'
Mr Manajid, from Falluja - a hotbed of armed opposition to the US-led occupation in Iraq - said if he was not playing football "for sure" he would be fighting as part of the resistance.
Do worry, you prinking hotshot, we've got a bullet with your name on it just as soon as you come back and pick up arms against us in Iraq.
"I want to defend my home. If a stranger invades America and the people resist, does that mean they are terrorists?" he asked. "Everyone [in Falluja] has been labelled a terrorist. These are all lies. Falluja people are some of the best people in Iraq."
Wonderful folks, always sending their mothers flowers and all that ...

Iraq's Olympic pride
The team said they were glad Iraq's former Olympic committee head Uday Hussein - Saddam Hussein's notorious son killed by US forces after the invasion - was no longer in charge.
But uttering a single word of thanks would choke the life out of your worthless skull.
But coach Adnan Hamad said he was concerned with what the Bush administration was doing in Iraq. "My problems are not with the American people. They are with what America has done in Iraq: destroy everything," he said.
Unlike Saddam, who built all of those splendid palaces with mortar made from your ground up bones.
"The American army has killed so many people in Iraq. What is freedom when I go to the stadium and there are shootings on the road?"
Let's start with how you won't be tortured for not winning the gold in Athens, you sh!theaded moron.
Mr Bush's spokesman defended the war on Iraq and the campaign adverts. "The ad simply talks about President Bush's optimism and how democracy has triumphed over terror," he was quoted by the Press Association as saying. "Twenty-five million people in Iraq are free as a result of the actions of the coalition."
Including some truly thankless b@stards who need to pound large quantities of hot Iraqi sand up their collective @sses.

#4  I would not expect anything less from these elitist. Yes they were tortured by Uday but they were part of the elite in Iraq under Saddam. The day we took down Saddam they lost a LOT of privileges. I don’t know, but I will bet my next paycheck they were card carrying member of Saddam’s party. They probably are in some way related to Saddam or someone in his inner circle. It would be like asking a former Nazi official after WWII if he is glad to be ‘liberated.’ You would get eth same type of response.

#6  The article here appeared on the BBC website and is essentially a reworking of Grant Wahl's controversial Sports Illustrated article.

For Americans who don't follow soccer, take it from one who does: Grant Wahl is a known fool.

He interviewed only three members, including the coach who was a friend of Uday's. One of the players is a sub.

These guys do not speak for the entire team. Wahl is obviously looking to make a name for himself.

I continue to support the team and wish them success. It would be a tremendous boost for Iraqi unity if they win a medal and would benefit the Coalition, too.

#8  Nice spin, JDB, but no cigar.

All of the Iraqi soccer players are "new" and had not played under Uday, so I'm not sure what previous "perks" you refer to.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/08/13/MNGVK87HAA1.DTL
...Although Iraq's 2004 Olympic roster is so young that it doesn't include anyone directly harmed by Odai, the players know many soccer players who were...

As for the team, the majority of players are Shiites and some Sunnis but only 1 Kurd. Therefore, I seriously doubt you'd get a differing opinion of America by interviewing the other soccer players, because of the single Kurd on the team and everyone else Shiite or Sunni.

As for the interviewed players "star" quality, you seem dismissive of one being a sub, whatever that means, since the team itself was formed in 2004. I read that Mahdi Karim was a substitute in a game against Costa Rica but he was not one of the 2 players interviewed.

Here's the official Iraqi squad list:
http://www.iraqsport.com/news/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=445#16

Salih Sadir scored 2 goals so far and he scored the winning goal to defeat the Portugal team, which was an important victory for Iraq. It strikes me that he deserved to be interviewed and he would represent the Shiite contingent on the team as well. As for Ahmed Manajid Abbas, he scored two crucial goals in the opening Olympic qualifier against Vietnam. Like Sadir, Abbas is on the official main squad and he is a star, and coming from Fallujah, I imagine he would represent the Sunni contingent of players.

Maybe you don't like the comments but I don't think the interviewed players are not stars or un-representative of the team. The coach played on the Iraq team in the 1980's, but he was chosen by the German coach to be his assistent. The German guy left suddenly because of personal safety concerns and so the assistant coach got "promoted". It's not like he has been Uday's pick for coach. He is just peeved that there is no instant peace in Iraq. Once again, his opinions are not something we want to hear but I don't think he's being arm twisted by the SI reporter to be anti-Bush.

We better get used to Iraqis' negativity. There's more of it where that came from.

Central Asia
Uzbekistan and the evolving IMU
The synchronized, suicide bomber attacks against the American and Israeli embassies in Tashkent on July 30 reveal a number of disturbing realities. The first is that some issues in Central Asia, such as how governments liberalize their domestic policies, have changed only in the realm of rhetoric. Another reality, based on the target selection of the suicide attacks, indicate the involvement of the once brow-beaten Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) -- however, with a new twist from its original strategic mandate.

Inspired by the legacy of the Basmachi insurgency that faced off against the Tsar's invading army in the early 19th century, the IMU was born in 1996 under the tutelage of Tohir Yuldashev. Ideologically and politically, the IMU philosophy emerged from Yuldashev's experiences with the United Tajik Opposition that was later imbued into a radically politicized mandate encased within an Islamic message. This message was the formation of an Islamic empire that would span modern day Central Asia. The following year Jumaboi Khojiev, known as the infamous Namangani, joined forces with Yuldashev and together they formed a powerful force that eventually spread far beyond the Ferghana Valley.

The IMU's recently refocused interest on high value Israeli and U.S. targets is evidence of a strong readjustment compared to the organization's old strategy. The tactical and symbolic targeting of the recent bombings draws evidence of fragmentation and political change within the group itself. Thus, this new shift may indicate a splintering of the IMU in the midst of experiencing a tactical self-assessment in respect to both the expansion of its objectives as well as its own self-ascribed role within the context of a globalized "war on terrorism."

Shiite Muslims hold anti-US protests in Indian Kashmir
Hundreds of Shiite Muslims Friday held noisy demonstrations in insurgency-hit Indian Kashmir denouncing the United States' offensive in Iraq's holy city of Najaf.
That makes sense. Not a lot of sense, but sense...
Between 1,000 and 1,500 Shiite Muslims emerged from two mosques in downtown Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, at the end of Friday prayers and started yelling anti-US slogans such as "Iraqi mujahedin (holy warriors) we are with you" and "America end pounding of Najaf." The protesters then marched through the streets chanting slogans praising Iraq's radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr. Several dozen Shiites also protested in Lal Chowk, Srinagar's main commercial hub, witnesses said. The were cane charged and some of them detained, police said.

Jordan rejects Hezbollah mediation offer for prisoners' release in Israel
Jordan has rebuffed plans by family members of 23 prisoners and 18 missing Jordanians in Israel to seek the mediation of Hezbollah, Prime Minister Faisal Fayez said on Thursday. "We are following the case of our prisoners and exerting efforts to win their release," said Mr Fayez in an interview with the BBC and DPA. But he said any move to include Hezbollah in such efforts would be totally rejected. "We are a sovereign state and we do not allow any party to meddle in the cause of our prisoners." Mr Fayez recalled that a visit to Amman by Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom was shelved at the last minute last February over differences of opinion. The visit was to have coincided with the release of 10 Jordanian prisoners in Israel. Disgruntled family members of Jordanian prisoners have expressed readiness to visit Lebanon and meet with Hezbollah officials in a bid to win the release of their relatives.

Egypt Officials to Hold Talks With Fatah
Two senior Egyptian officials will meet representatives from Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction during a visit to the Palestinian territories, an Egyptian newspaper said yesterday. The semi-official Al-Ahram daily reported Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and intelligence chief Omar Suleiman will also discuss Palestinian security reorganization with Arafat during the visit planned for the end of August.
Yet another topic that'll still be under discussion several weeks after Doomsday...
Egypt fears anarchy could follow any Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and allow Islamist groups to take over the narrow wedge of land that is home to 1.3 million people. "Abul Gheit and Suleiman are due to meet officials from the Fatah organization during their visit... Arafat is expected to send a delegation of senior Fatah officials to Egypt in the beginning of the coming month," the newspaper said. Al-Ahram added the visits were in the framework "of talks between Egypt and the Palestinian factions to facilitate the possibility of forming a plan of national action with full agreement by the end of September." Egypt reached an agreement last week with Palestinian militant group Hamas on guaranteeing Palestinian unity following a possible Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Abul Gheit and Suleiman will also travel to Israel to meet Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to discuss the Israeli plan to withdraw from Gaza. Al-Ahram said the talks with Arafat will include the issue of unifying the Palestinian security bodies into three bodies.

Bombs Prompt Call for U.N. Afghan Pullout
The bombing of a U.N. election office in Afghanistan that injuring six policemen drew calls from a U.N. union Friday that the world body consider withdrawing staffers from the embattled nation. The Staff Union urged for a security review and revamped safety measures for Afghanistan-based U.N. personnel, saying "the safety of staff remains the highest priority." "As we approach the election time, more than likely attacks will intensify," said Guy Candusso, the union's vice-president. "We think the U.N. should consider suspending operations and rethink security before moving into the next critical phase of the election process." The union noted that other recent attacks on election workers have highlighted the danger. U.N. chief Kofi Annan said this week that violence has increasingly been aimed at U.N. staff and offices in Afghanistan. Afghan voters are scheduled to elect a president on Oct. 9 and a parliament in April. U.N. associate spokesman Stephane Dujarric, asked about a possible staff withdrawal from Afghanistan, said a U.N. security assessment mission recently returned from the country with specific recommendations which have been approved and are in the process of being implemented.
