Hundreds of Shiite Muslims Friday held noisy demonstrations in insurgency-hit Indian Kashmir denouncing the United States' offensive in Iraq's holy city of Najaf.
That makes sense. Not a lot of sense, but sense... | Between 1,000 and 1,500 Shiite Muslims emerged from two mosques in downtown Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, at the end of Friday prayers and started yelling anti-US slogans such as "Iraqi mujahedin (holy warriors) we are with you" and "America end pounding of Najaf." The protesters then marched through the streets chanting slogans praising Iraq's radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr. Several dozen Shiites also protested in Lal Chowk, Srinagar's main commercial hub, witnesses said. The were cane charged and some of them detained, police said. |
