The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001, seeking to topple the radical Islamic Taliban and the group's ability to provide safe harbor to al Qaeda in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
In the interview, Karzai also said the Afghan government and international allies have failed to provide security for the Afghan people.

Mr. Rasmussen pointed out that NATO is determined to pursue its operation as long as threats persist, "but to end it as soon as conditions permit. So we stand ready to terminate the mission when the political and military conditions are fulfilled," he said

Richard Dawkins has attacked Muslim faith schools, saying that they teach students 'alien rubbish'.
The noted atheist claimed that pupils were being taught to ignore scientific evidence in favour of following the Koran.
He said that he had even met a science teacher who believed that the earth was only 6,000 years old.
Mr Dawkins, a former Oxford professor who found fame as an evolutionary biologist before becoming a vocal opponent of religion, is a longstanding critic of all faith schools.
But he has said that Islamic schools are worse than others, as their teaching is more likely to be influenced by a religious agenda.
Talking to the Times Educational Supplement, he described a trip he made to an 'utterly deplorable' Muslim school in Leicester.
According to the Daily Telegraph, he said: 'Every person I met believes if there is any disagreement between the Koran and science, then the Koran wins.
'It's just utterly deplorable. These are now British children who are having their minds stuffed with alien rubbish.'

Ummm, just to be clear:
It was Galileo whose said that more or less under his breath, after publicly recanting his scientific theories to avoid punishment under the Inquisition.
The Church later came to grips with science, but that was not one of its better moments.

Keep in mind that the Catholic denial of science was pretty much centuries ago (OK, some of that still around). The Muslim faith(s) have a long way to go.

Documents recently turned over by the Justice Department to Congressional investigators indicate that then-Deputy Attorney General Gary Grindler received a detailed briefing on Fast and Furious more than a year and a half ago.
"Deputy Attorney General" is the Justice Department's No. 2 figure, directly under Attorney General Eric Holder.
Grindler moved from Deputy Attorney General to a spot as Holder's chief of staff last January.
The briefing Grindler attended was on March 12, 2010, six months into ATF's Operation Fast and Furious, which allowed thousands of weapons on the street in an attempt to track down Mexican drug cartels. Portions of the documents are redacted.
In handwritten notes about Fast and Furious that are not all legible, Grindler writes about "seizures in Mexico" and "links to cartel." He also noted "seizures in Mexico" on a map of Phoenix, the home base for Fast and Furious, and Mexico locations where some guns ended up. And Grindler made notations on a photograph of several dozen rifles.
Handwritten notes would seem to be particularly damning...

An official from the U.S. State Department has called the Charlotte family of al-Qaida propagandist Samir Khan to offer the government's condolences on his death in a U.S. drone attack last week in Yemen, according to a family spokesman.
"They were very apologetic (for not calling the family sooner) and offered condolences," Jibril Hough said about the Thursday call from the State Department to Khan's father, Zafar.

Never heard the US State Department comment or forward condolences on the death of a soldier or Marine. Strange, very strange, but it is generally a very strange bunch, those State and foreign service types.
Many years ago while in D.C. a colleague and I had an appointment with a fellow at State whom I had previously served with when he was on on active duty. Traffic was especially bad that day and we ended up being delayed. Can't remember how long, wasn't too bad for D.C. He was pretty high up in the LA section. Upon arriving his office...intro's and apologies, he replied, "not much on punctuality are you." I nearly got up and left right then, but ignored it instead. Walking out his office in that manner would not have went over with my boss.

[An Nahar] An announcement by Hizbullah that it rejects the funding of the Special Tribunal for Leb will likely put Premier Najib Miqati at loggerheads with the international community after he made several pledges that Leb would fund the STL.
The international tribunal is set to try ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's suspected assassins.
Miqati should now choose between upholding his pledges or resigning, ministerial sources told Beirut dailies published Friday.
They said the prime minister instructed cabinet ministers loyal to him not to discuss the issue of the funding in the media after he promised U.N. chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon ... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan... and Security Council member states during his visit to New York last month that the Lebanese government will pay its $32 million share.
The new tumult came after al-Akhbar daily reported on Thursday that Hizbullah leader His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb... told his visitors that the STL will not be funded. But at the same time he called for protecting the government and maintaining its unity.
This stance is not subject to any bargaining, the newspaper said.
The Shiite party totally rejects the funding, which would be seen as recognition of the court if it was carried out, sources close to Hizbullah said.
Government unity is not more important than the confrontation with the court, they added despite Nasrallah's alleged call to safeguard the cabinet.
But Miqati held onto his stance on Thursday, telling the National Audio-Visual Media Council that paying Leb's share to the tribunal will serve the country and Hizbullah.
The court will continue to operate whether Leb paid its share or not, he said.
"If we paid, we will spare Leb harm because there are many who harbor ill-will against Leb and the resistance," the head of the council, Abdul Hadi Mahfouz, quoted the prime minister as saying.
Under U.N. Security Council resolution 1757, Leb is obliged to cover 49 percent of the STL's running costs.
Conflicts over the court triggered a political crisis in January that brought down the government of Saad Hariri Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. [An Nahar] Israel has warned Syrian President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Israel's NFC website reported that the Jewish state's government relayed this message to the Syrian president through European intelligence circles.
These sources said that seeing as Tel Aviv is Israel's economic and financial hub, a retaliation for an attack against it, by Hizbullah, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, or Syria, will not be limited to Syria, but all of Leb and Gazoo.
NFC reported Israeli military circles as saying that the Jewish state's message to Assad "is clear in that Damascus ...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti... ' fate, should it be targeted, will not be different than Leb's."
These revelations came in light of an Iranian report that Assad had warned that he would "set fire" to the Middle East if foreign forces launched a military strike on his country and would ask for Hizbullah's help to attack Israel.
An Arab source told Iran's Fars news Agency that Assad made the warning to Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu during his visit to Damascus.
"If a crazy measure is taken against Damascus, I will need not more than six hours to transfer hundreds of rockets and missiles to the Golan Heights to fire them at Tel Aviv," the Syrian president said.
On Thursday, an official source at the Syrian Foreign Ministry denied these reports, adding that "no messages were conveyed from or to anyone during the meeting."
The Iranian news agency did not indicate the date of the meeting between the two officials.

The Israelis always think before issuing threats, so though this message is directed at Assad, it isn't aimed to persuade him of anything. Instead it is to let Hamas, Hizbullah, and the Lebanese government know that attacks on Tel Aviv mean that *they* are going to be pounded so hard that they will not ever forget it.
Importantly what is backing up this plan is that the US is accelerating shipment to Israel of 5,000 smart bombs, including 500 penetrating bunker buster bombs (BLU-109)(2,000 pound).
The rest of the deal are 2,500-909 kg (2,000 pound) bombs, a thousand 455 kg (1,000 pound) bombs and 500-227 kg (500 pound) bombs.
Israel already has several hundred of the GBU-24 (Paveway III, 2,000 pound) penetrators, and a hundred of the larger (2.5 ton) GBU-28s. This bomb can penetrate 32 meters (100 feet) of earth, or six meters (20 feet) of concrete. The lighter GBU-24 can manage less than half that.

even if a single bomb doesn't actually penetrate, it displaces concrete, and creates pressure that has to go somewhere. You would not likely leave that bunker upright and in one piece with your senses intact

Believe they did this for the Palace bunker in Baghdad in 2003. Granted it was pointless to bomb it in the first place since Saddam wasn't there but they still did one then another strategy.

Even if the concrete is 21 meters thick, if the penetrator reaches 20 meters before exploding, you do not want to be in the bunker. There is an effect known as spalling, which means sharp fast-moving pieces of the concrete are blasted loose from the INSIDE section of the bunker, and then bounce around until they hit something soft and stick in it; or pulverize from impact.

Besides, 20 meters translates to 66 FEET of poured concrete. And if it is not properly reinforced with rebar, it has a major problem with structural failure and collapse when subjected to an internal blast wave. Besides which, it is a bear to work with that much concrete, and avoid bubbles and voids in what you have poured.

A 60+ ft perimeter of solid concrete is a helluva lot of concrete. Not many places that it would be practical to build, where it will require such resources.
