Dads shot each other's daughters in Florida road-rage gunfight: cops
[NYPOST] Two "crazy" dads have been charged with attempted murder after allegedly opening fire and hitting each other’s daughters in a terrifying road-rage shootout in Florida, authorities said.

Strangers William Hale, 35, and Frank Allison, 43, shot at each other’s vehicles with semi-automatic handguns during a high-speed "cat and mouse" chase late Saturday — and were finally busted when they got out and started brawling on the highway, according to cops.

During the shootout, Hale’s 5-year-old daughter was hit in the leg and
Allison’s 14-year-old daughter was shot in the back, leaving her with a collapsed lung, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said Monday.

"What’s scarier than one crazy driver with a gun? Two crazy drivers with a gun," the shocked sheriff said.

"Thankfully, no one was killed in this incident, but it could have very easily turned out that way because two people were acting stupid and let their tempers get the best of them.

Courtesy of Skidmark, the Daily Mail take on the story, originally posted separately. Thanks for catching that, Dron!

"Oh, the new kind?"

"Yeah."

"Stop! Police! Get out of the car and assume the turtle!"

"What?"

"Ehh?"

"Get down on the ground with your hands hangin' limp and snivel, motherfuckers!"

Venezuelan migrant couple are arrested after taking out $10M loans against EMPTY luxury property in Miami that belonged to Maduro regime members who'd been banned from America
  • The group of fraudsters included at least six additional co-conspirators now serving between two-and-a-half and six-and-a-half years in prison

  • The opulent homes targeted by the group are owned by elite Venezuelans who were sanctioned during the Trump administration over a number of misdeeds

  • The schemers were able to convince local lenders that they owned the houses and took out multi-million dollar mortgages against them
Ringleader Carlos Rafael Castañeda Mendez, 35, recruited fellow Venezuelan migrants to get in on the fraudulent scheme with him, including his romantic interest Genesis Martusciello, 29, and six others.

Netflix signs up to ratings body Barb
More user sentiment analysis tracking data for the FBI?
[BBC] Netflix has signed up to the TV ratings agency Barb, which means its audiences will be measured by an external, independent body for the first time.

The move makes Barb the first industry-owned ratings service in the world that Netflix has joined.

Previously, the streaming giant has only released snapshots of its viewing data, highlighting the success of its most popular shows.

Barb will begin reporting Netflix's viewing figures from November.

It is a significant move for the streamer, and will see the data being used by advertisers, competitors and journalists to ascertain the success or failure of Netflix properties.

Netflix is not the only streamer being included - any service which accounts for more than 0.5% of total identified viewing will be listed too. This means content from services such as Disney and Amazon is also likely to be included.

While BARB has been reporting streaming viewing at both a service and programme level since November 2021, only its underwriting organisations and those with a special license previously had access to Netflix's data.

Barb, which stands for Broadcasters' Audience Research Board, compiles audience measurement and TV ratings in the UK.

The agency will report Netflix's ratings in the same way it reports viewing for more than 300 other subscribing broadcast channels.

The networks currently covered by Barb include mainstream services such as the BBC and ITV to smaller channels such as Dave and E4.

-War on Police-
Eight police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Jayland Walker following a traffic stop in Akron are brought back to work following a three-month suspension by the police chief to help with 'crisis' staffing shortage
  • Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old black man, was shot and killed after he fled an attempted traffic stop and fired a shot from his car during the vehicle chase

  • Police in Akron, Ohio, fired a barrage of gunshots at Walker on June 27, and he had 46 bullet wounds in his body

  • The eight officers involved - who have never been named - were suspended, but on Tuesday Akron police announced they were returning to work

  • Steve Mylett, the city's police chief, said they were being brought back due to a staffing shortage which threatened to leave Akron without services

  • Mylett said he appreciated that some in the community would be concerned, but the officers would be on desk duties, and not in uniform

Britain
Pubs warn of booze shortage this winter unless they are put on priority list for gas supplies amid fears blackouts will impact brewery production and stop draught beer lines working
  • Britain's pubs could run out of beer in the face of nationwide energy shortages

  • The National Grid has warned the UK could face blackout power cuts this winter

  • Many pubgoers have started working from the pub to avoid energy bills at home

  • However, pubs have already started to use candlelight to cut down on energy

  • The food and drink industry is already facing a crisis over the shortage of CO2

Economy
CPI up +0.4 for Sept; Social Security will rise 8.7% in 2023
Amid record high inflation, Social Security beneficiaries will get an 8.7% increase to their benefits in 2023, the highest increase in 40 years.

The Social Security Administration announced the change on Thursday. It will result in a benefit increase of more than $140 more per month on average starting in January.
----------
Federal civil service and military service pension will also rise by 8.7%; Happily Medicare part B premiums will decrease slightly in 2023.
The pension increases will mean an additional $20 B or so in Federal Spending (my guess).

#8  Proving again my point: No demographic votes more regularly nor more heavily than old people. Politicians want to be SURE we get goodies just before an election.

And the decrease in Medicare Part B is also nice. But in this era of persistent inflation, I wonder how on earth (other than sheer, naked vote-buying) they justify it. Not that I'm complaining. I'm just curious.

#9  the SNAP benefit went up ~12% because the adjustment is based on the grocery index not the 'all products' index

and also the calculation year is different as the SNAP adjustment year ends on 30 June vs the SSI adjustment year that ends on 30 Sept.

#10  In an article about inflation, I noted

Gas: +18.2% Fuel Oil: +58.1%

Question: Can producers twiddle a barrel of oil to get more gas and less diesel and home fuel oils? Making gas cheaper but other fuels more scarce/expensive?

So my last gas was $3.39 because other uses (homes and truckers) are paying more? Another "win" for Brandon!

PPI index up again but not soaring: Fed warns on unemployment, Biden blithers on Russia and China

This is the last such update before the Nov elections.

Producer P Index
up 0.4% for month
up 8.5% year over year for all items
up 5.6% year over year for all items except energy and food

CPI comes out 13 Oct at about 830 EDT will probably show about the same.

since wage rates will be up about 4% year over year, the numbers are bad, really bad.

  • Biden declared the post-Cold War era 'definitively over' and ticked off a laundry list of global issues that could trigger national security threats

  • He cited inflation, climate change, disease, energy shortages and terrorism

  • The United States will not allow Russia, or any power, to achieve its objectives through using, or threatening to use, nuclear weapons,' Biden wrote
