Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief October 11, 2022: Talib emir defects to Resistance w/50 turbans in Badakhshan; Talib car kaboomed in Laghman, killing 3
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • MORE TALIBAN DEFECTIONS – Another Taliban Commander, Bahr al-Din is reported to have joined the Resistance in Badakhshan Province with approximately 50 of his fighters. The news follows on the heels of Commander Bahruddin and District Governor Mukhlis's reputed defections since last Thursday. While not definitive, the pace of defections in the North seems to be increasing.

  • EDUCATION OFFICIALS UNDER FIRE – While the Taliban leadership and the Taliban Ministry of Education are being blasted by the international community for their stance against girls’ education, local education officials in Afghanistan are increasingly being targeted for questioning the policy and taking part in activism. The Taliban arrested an education center leader in Daikundi on Saturday and a former Faizabad District head of education was reportedly assassinated with his son in Jawzjan yesterday. Both had taken an active role in denouncing the draconian policies put in place by the Taliban.

  • FORMER AFGHAN POLICE OFFICIAL MURDERED IN PAKISTAN – Abdul Samad Achakzai was the former Commander of local police in Uruzgan and had also served as the Chief of Police for the Panjwayi District of Kandahar. He was killed by unknown gunmen in Quetta, Pakistan where he had fled when the Taliban came to power. He had recently denounced the terrorist attacks on the Kaaj education center in a video message. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

  • OFFICIAL RAID ON MEDICAL FACILITY – The Taliban’s National Food and Drug Authority conducted a raid on the Ariana Medical facility under the guise of seizing expired medicines the center is accused of using. However, sources in the Police claimed that a burgeoning black market for medications has turned such activities into moneymaking schemes for some officials. The source went on to say that some of the medication and supplies are routinely sent to the Taliban forces fighting in the North.

  • BLAST REPORTED IN LAGHMAN PROVINCE – An explosion was said to have occurred in the city of Mehtarlam (Esmat Chawk). Early reports suggest 3 may have been killed and approximately 15 non-combatants and traffic police were wounded. The target of the attack may have been a vehicle driven by an unspecified Taliban official. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

  • TALIBAN SENDS ANOTHER SENIOR LEADER TO BADAKHSHAN – In another sign, the Taliban is worried about the developing situation in Badakhshan, the Chief of Staff, Qari Fasihuddin Fitrat was dispatched to the Province to meet with local Commanders and assure the security forces personnel of Kabul’s support. It is believed he met with Provincial leadership at the 219 Omar Sales base.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Laghman: A roadside bomb that may have targetted an unidentified Taliban official may have killed 3 and wounded 15 more in Mehtariam on Monday. No group has claimed credit for the attack.

Taliban Releases the Manager of a Local Media Outlet after 4 Months of Detention
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Directorate of Intelligence prison released the former owner and editor of Radio Aftab, a local radio station in Daikundi province of central Afghanistan, after 4 months of detention, Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) reported.

After the Taliban forces discovered journalistic posts on his social media accounts, Mirza Hasani, the former editor and owner of Radio Aftab, was arrested in Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province in north-eastern Afghanistan.

Hasani was detained on suspicion of working as a news hound for the National Resistance® Front (NRF), an anti-Taliban krazed killer group, and was subsequently transferred to the Taliban’s intelligence agency’s prison in Kabul.

Through a messaging gap, the AFJC claimed to have confirmed Hasani’s release with his wife Sakina Rahimi. Hasani was detained for four months in direct violation of press freedom before being freed in Kabul.

According to the AFJC, the request of the complaints investigation commission and the efforts of advocates for journalists’ rights made it possible for Hasani to be released.

The AFJC welcomed Hasani’s release but urged the Taliban to also release Khalid Qadiri, who is also detained by the Taliban and given a one-year prison term.

"We (AFJC) also call on authorities to release Journalist Khalid Qadiri who was sentenced to one year in prison in May for allegedly spreading anti-Islamic Emirate propaganda and committing espionage for foreign media outlets, and urge them to ensure journalists can do their work without interference, fear, or reprisal," AFJC said.

Abdul Hanan Mohammadi, a local news hound for Pajhwok News Agency, was released from the Taliban’s Intelligence Directorate prison in Kabul about two weeks ago, despite the Taliban government officials’ claims that there are no journalists held in the group’s prisons.

An AFJC report shows that during the first year of the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, there have been 245 cases of violation of press freedom in Afghanistan with 130 journalists detained for a short period of time.

Europe
More Infrastructure Sabotage: Germany Hunts Culprits of Cut Cables That Brought Rail Network to Knees
[Breitbart] Already exacerbated fears about infrastructure sabotage were dramatically underlined at the weekend when two apparently coordinated acts against the backbone system which controls train movements saw Germany’s railway network grind to a halt for several hours. Europe has been suffering such attacks, often attributed to actors of the ultra-left, for many years.

Backhaul communications cables concerned with the Germany Railway (Deutsche Bahn, DB) radio system, safety-critical equipment without which modern, tightly timetabled and high speed trains cannot safely operate, were "willfully and intentionally severed" on Saturday morning by people with "very precise knowledge of the railway’s radio system." The two cables damaged were 340 miles apart from each other and cut simultaneously.

The impact of the sabotage on the fibre-optic cables was that trains both regional and long-distance were disrupted for several hours over the weekend. While the immediate disruption may be felt to be small, the attack nevertheless has been front-page news in Germany since, given the way in which it seriously underlines the vulnerability of critical national infrastructure. Just weeks before, the Nord Stream and Nord Stream Two undersea gas pipelines were — if reports are to be believes — blown up, severing a major route of importing energy for Germany.

As Die Zeit notes, German general Carsten Breuer warns in the aftermath of the railway cable cutting that much infrastructure — the networks that transmit power and data and underpin modern life not least among them — are extremely vulnerable to attack. He told the German press: "Every substation, every power plant, every pipeline can be attacked, can be a possible target... This is not about an enemy army with soldiers and tanks attacking our country [but] pinpricks in the population that are intended to stir up uncertainty and shake confidence in our state".
