-Short Attention Span Theater-
I know, lets do something unique like say pepper spray the bike racers.
[Fox News]
Disclaimer I wanted to post this last night but all the reports then were behind a paywall. Today Fox has it open to view so here it is.
Tour de France stopped after pepper spray hits riders during roadside protest.

The Tour de France temporarily came to a standstill Tuesday after protesters stormed a road during Stage 16, leading to a number of riders inadvertently getting hit with what appeared to be pepper spray or tear gas.

Initial reports appeared to suggest a police officer used pepper spray or tear gas to fend off protesters who were trying to throw bales of hay onto the road -- and, in the process, managed to hit several riders.

#5  Protesters were French Farmers?

They do this every couple of years and it goes back to at least the early 1970's. I don't even bother to read about the reason(s) for the protest; it's a reflex with them.

Video shows armadillo loose downtown in Nebraska’s capital
[MIAMIHERALD] Have you seen Abe the Armadillo? He got away from Nebraska police during a chase
"Calling all cars! Calling all cars! Be on the lookout for... uh... an armadillo."
The armadillo was running around downtown Lincoln, Nebraska, when police tried to catch the armored-critter.
"Roger, Lincoln One! Do you have a description?"
Officer Andrew Vocasek spotted the nine-banded armadillo while investigating the report of a suspicious vehicle early Tuesday morning, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported.
"I think I've got a fix on him, chief... No. Sorry. This one's got a mustache!"
Vocasek tried for a "positive police contact," but the armadillo "was having none of it," the Lincoln Police Department posted to twitter at about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday.
"This is the police! Drop the grubs and step away with your paws up!"
The department also posted a video of the armadillo running near 13th and O St., which is near several businesses, including Walgreens, Jimmy John’s and some banks.
"Hello, police? There's an armadillo staring in my bedroom window!"
"Does he have a mustache?"
"No..."
"There's an APB out on him! Try and occupy his attention till we get there, lady!"
"I'm already naked! What else can I do?"
"Try shakin' yer booty for him!"

#3  Armadillo = Possum with armor

Unlike Armadillos, Opossums don't get rabies very easily due to their low body temperature. Plus they (Possums) have immunity to the venom of rattlesnakes and other pit vipers.

And they're pretty tasty (you DO have to cook them for a bit).

Wildfires in Greece kill 74 in deadliest blazes in decades
[DAWN] The corpse count from Greece's deadliest wildfires in decades climbed to 74 on Tuesday as rescue crews searched on land and sea for those who sought to escape the blazes that engulfed popular summer resort spots near Athens.

The number of victims appeared set to go even higher, with crews checking charred homes and vehicles and the coasties scouring beaches and deeper waters. There was no definitive count of the missing.

Fueled by 80 kph winds that frequently changed direction, the fires one to the west of Athens near the town of Kineta and another to the northeast near the port of Rafina spread at speeds that surprised many, trapping hundreds on beaches and cutting off escape routes.

All the casualties appeared to be from the fire near Rafina, a popular seaside area that is a mix of permanent residences and vacation homes. The blaze broke out on Monday afternoon during a hot, dry spell but the cause was not immediately clear. Aerial photos showed charred swathes of forest and homes.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras declared three days of national mourning. Apart from the dead, which included children, hospitals treated 187 people, most for burns, with 10 listed at death's door.

Britain
UK allows fracking in Lancashire despite criticism
[PRESSTV] The United Kingdom has allowed a fracking project in North West England, turning a blind eye on widespread controversy surrounding its plans for shale gas exploration.

The government’s last-minute approval for the energy site in fracking in Preston New Road, Lancashire, came Tuesday on the last day of Parliament before the summer recess, according to The Independent.

Hydraulic fracturing will begin at the site by shale gas extraction company Cuadrilla which has obtained the permit after meeting all the necessary requirements, Energy Minister Claire Perry said.

The approval for the project comes despite public concerns about the shale gas exploration which many say could have serious environmental impacts. The same site in Lancashire experienced two minor earthquakes in previous exploratory drilling.

Environmental activists and opposition politicians criticized the approval for the project, saying the government was in search of new fossil fuel resources amid an unprecedented heatwave that is partly due to rise in carbon emissions.

"This announcement has been snuck out on the last day of parliament. In the middle of a global heatwave the government is kickstarting a new fossil fuel industry. It should hang its head in shame," said Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party, in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuelan inflation heading towards 1,000,000 percent
[NYPOST] Inflation in Venezuela could top 1 million percent by the end of 2018 as its five-year-long economic crisis deepens, the region’s observer at the International Monetary Fund said.

Years of hyperinflation and destitute conditions in the oil-concentrated nation compare to Germany after World War I and Zim-bob-we at the beginning of the last decade, said Alejandro Werner, head of the Western Hemisphere for the IMF, in a blog post.

"We expect the [Venezuelan] government to continue to run wide fiscal deficits financed entirely by an expansion in base money, which will continue to fuel an acceleration of inflation as money demand continues to collapse," Werner wrote.

What’s more, the crisis will lead to intensifying spillover effects for neighboring countries in part as panicked Venezuelans, suffering from food shortages and lacking in health care, electricity, water, transportation and security, cross into Colombia and Brazil and strain their resources, Werner predicted.

Overall, the Latin American region is expected to grow by 1.6 percent in 2018 and 2.6 percent in 2019, up from 1.3 percent in 2017, but lower than the IMF’s projections issued in April. The downgrade comes in part as a drought and currency pressure will hold back Argentina

Butina Defense: Show Us The Evidence That She Offered Sex For Access
The trial of Maria Butina promises to provide salacious drama to an already sexy political narrative ... if in fact the players are allowed to discuss it. Attorneys for both sides fought over access to evidence today, with the government arguing for a gag order to keep details of the investigation under wraps until the trial. Butina’s attorney wants to see all of the evidence now, however, claiming that the government doesn’t actually have a case ‐ especially on their sex-for-access claims:

Southern California home sales crash, a warning sign to the nation
[CNBC]
  • Sales of both new and existing houses and condominiums dropped 11.8 percent year over year, as prices shot up to a record high, according to CoreLogic.

  • The median price paid for all Southern California homes sold in June was a record $536,250, according to CoreLogic, a 7.3 percent increase compared to June of 2017.

  • In the past, California, one of the largest housing markets in the nation, has been a predictor for the rest of the country.

#8  My guess is sellers finally found the price level at which buyers either will not or cannot buy. 49 Pan is also correct about the property taxes. Try paying $2000 or $3000 a month in property taxes on top of your mortgage. You might think you own your home but all you're really doing is paying rent to the government. The rent is extremely high and the landlord will evict you if you don't pay. I don't know what the numbers are but a lot of folks have had enough and they are leaving.

#13  What better consumer of soy than europeons?
Posted by: regular joe || 07/26/2018 13:04 Comments || Top||

#14  Well, much ado about not really much. First of all "the EU" doesn't buy anything. This is the decision of importing companies. Since China will buy more soy beans from Brazil, the U.S. will sell more soy beans to European importers (mainly used for animals).

LNG imports may rise, but no numbers or guarantees were given.

But basically Junker made no "concessions" (he has no power to do so), just some vague promises.

The most important thing: No 25% tariffs on cars which would have triggered a REAL trade war. If Trump doesn't change his mind tomorrow, we can all deescalate a bit.

I'm a businessman and I can tell you, that this "art of the deal" is not very successful. I deal with reliable partners who fulfill their contracts. If they don't, I look elsewhere.

My guess is that the EU will just sit Trump out. I don't like Junker at all but he has decades of experience in these things.

No Pakistani women vote in village where wives had vowed to defy husbands
[Dhaka Tribune] Pak women who had pledged to defy men in their village by voting for the first time ultimately did not exercise their democratic right in Wednesday’s election, citing intimidation by their husbands.

Male elders banned females from voting in Mohri Pur, some 60km from the central Pakistain city of Multan
Home of the Multan Sultans...
, around 1947 and the women have obeyed ever since.

This year many had vowed to cast a ballot following changes to Pakistain’s election laws and amid shifting attitudes towards women in parts of the deeply patriarchal South Asian country.

Some 3,200 women were listed on the electoral register in Mohri Pur - but not one voted, according to election officials and an AFP journalist at the village’s sole polling station.

"We have threats from our husbands that they will divorce us if we cast our vote," 25-year-old Tanya Bibi told AFP as she walked past the polling station, without going in.

Around 8,000 men were registered to vote in the village. Large queues of them - each clutching identity cards - formed at the polling station, located in a school.

"We are here to cast our ballots, but our women didn’t cast their votes because it is our old tradition which we have been preserving," Muhammad Shamsher told AFP.

#1  Actually most of these traditions including no marriage for priests date back to Charlemagne not being able to understand the concept of a corporation or organization (church) that is not divisible as an inheritance. This meant the only way the Church could keep it's assets intact was to have no children of the mother superior, abbot, priest or bishop.

Oh, they will. Just like the warning 'Don't Feed the Bears', as long as state and local government provide services and material support. The term attractive nuance applies to these local governments that subsidize their presence. You will always get more of what you subsidize.

Santa Barbara Authorizes Jail Time for Handing Out Straws
h/t Instapundit
The city of Santa Barbara has passed an ordinance that will allow restaurant employees to be punished with up to six months of jail time or a $1,000 fine for giving plastic straws to their customers.

The bill was passed unanimously last Tuesday, and covers bars, restaurants, and other food-service businesses. Establishments will still be allowed to hand out plastic stirrers, but only if customers request them.

#1  Enjoy that root beer float or a asian Boba drink with a paper straw. I doubt it works. The Boba drink stands could make a charge of racism stand against those greens.

#2  Funny thing os that I read most of the plastics (including straws) in the Pacific Ocean actually came from the Asians countries.

#4  3dc, IIRC, the law also bans paper straws.

#5  The Nanny State strikes again. There goal is to be as annoying as possible. I looked at a website talking about this issue. Some of the photos of wildlife look staged although I couldn't prove it. Here.

There's plenty of garbage tossed along roadways that doesn't get addressed. Why don't these lefties clean up the roadways instead of complaining about straws?

#11  If they can charge for them, why can't they bundle that charge into the price of the drink. Then lessen the price of the drink by the same amount... and thrown out of court with a possible counter-suit for harrassment.
