| #2 A long time pre-Charlemagne, I have read accounts by some Church Fathers about the status of nuns who had been raped by barbarians during the time of the collapse of the Roman Empire, through no fault of their own. They were held to be a 2nd class, beneath that of intact virgins from that point onward. |

| #1 Actually most of these traditions including no marriage for priests date back to Charlemagne not being able to understand the concept of a corporation or organization (church) that is not divisible as an inheritance. This meant the only way the Church could keep it's assets intact was to have no children of the mother superior, abbot, priest or bishop. |
