#1  Actually most of these traditions including no marriage for priests date back to Charlemagne not being able to understand the concept of a corporation or organization (church) that is not divisible as an inheritance. This meant the only way the Church could keep it's assets intact was to have no children of the mother superior, abbot, priest or bishop.
