Justice Dept. won't charge FBI agents accused of botching Nassar case
[ConservativeTreehouse] WASHINGTON — Two former FBI agents accused of mishandling sex-abuse allegations against former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar will not be charged with a crime, the Justice Department announced Thursday.

In a statement, officials said that after a "careful re-review of evidence," the department "is adhering to its prior decision not to bring federal criminal charges," adding: "This does not in any way reflect a view that the investigation of Nassar was handled as it should have been, nor in any way reflects approval or disregard of the conduct of the former agents."

John Manly, a lawyer for many of Nassar's alleged victims, called the decision "incomprehensible" and said the FBI agents "violated their oaths of office and colluded in the cover up of the worst sexual assault scandal in the history of sports."

The department's inspector general uncovered major missteps in the FBI's early handling of sex-abuse allegations against the disgraced former USA Gymnastics doctor, allowing him to victimize other patients before his arrest.

From the OIG's report July 2021:

The OIG found that, despite the extraordinarily serious nature of the allegations and the possibility that Nassar's conduct could be continuing, senior officials in the FBI Indianapolis Field Office failed to respond to the Nassar allegations with the utmost seriousness and urgency that they deserved and required, made numerous and fundamental errors when they did respond to them, and violated multiple FBI policies.

The Indianapolis Field Office did not undertake any investigative activity until September 2nd, five weeks after the meeting with USA Gymnastics—when they telephonically interviewed one of the three athletes. Further, FBI Indianapolis never interviewed the other two gymnasts who they were told were available to meet with FBI investigators.

This absence of any serious investigative activity was compounded when the Indianapolis Field Office did not transfer the matter to the FBI office (the Lansing Resident Agency), where venue most likely would have existed had evidence been developed to support the potential federal crimes being considered, even though the Indianapolis office had been advised to do so by the USAO and had told USA Gymnastics that the transfer had occurred.

Additionally, the Indianapolis office did not notify state or local authorities of the sexual assault allegations even though it questioned whether there was federal jurisdiction to pursue them. As a result, the Lansing Resident Agency did not learn of the Nassar allegations until over a year after they were first reported to the FBI and then learned of them only from the MSUPD.

Moreover, the FBI conducted no investigative activity in the matter for more than 8 months following the September 2015 interview. During that period of time, as alleged and detailed in numerous civil complaints, Nassar’s sexual assaults continued.

#2  End the Civil Service Act. The intent was government service would be non-partisan, that employees would be paid modest salaries and pension in return for secure employment. Now 'civil servants' are partisan, have an pay and pension compensation better than the average taxpayer, and are all but immune from firing for egregious behavior and job performance.

Texas school district closes schools after receiving ‘credible threat of violence'
[FoxNews] The Donna Independent School District in Donna, Texas, announced Wednesday night that it will be canceling school district-wide on Thursday and Friday after receiving a "credible threat of violence."

No details were immediately released about what type of threat was made, although the district said it is currently under investigation.

"The safety and security of our students and staff is our first priority," the announcement said. "Classes will resume Tuesday morning."

According to a local news outlet MyRGV.com, a source familiar with the matter said law enforcement found an AK-47 and a list of targeted students inside the home of one of the suspects.

The source told the paper that two to three people were involved in the thwarted plot. No further details were provided.

California Farm Water Coalition Warns Domestic Food Supply In Peril with State Cutting Water
If it's yellow, let it mellow.
If it's brown, flush it down.

[ZeroHedge] The California Farm Water Coalition issued a dire statement Tuesday warning that California’s agriculture industry and food supply is in peril because of restricted agriculture water supplies. “Today’s State Water Board emergency water conservation regulation continues to demonstrate how serious this year’s drought is. Water conservation measures are reaching farther and farther into our communities and now go beyond the water supply cuts felt by California farms and rural communities earlier this year.”

The California Farm Water Coalition represents agriculture water suppliers, water districts, agribusiness, farmers, as well as the supporting agribusinesses such as farm equipment suppliers, tractor manufacturers, and the like.

It was only last summer that the State Water Resources Control Board eliminated water supplies for thousands of family farms throughout the Central Valley, a mere two years after the state’s reservoirs were full from a particularly wet year. “The California State Water Resources Control Board announced that thousands of farmers in the Central Valley up to the Oregon Border will have their water curtailed until winter, the Globe reported.

When the State Water Board orders water cut off to farmers, the food supply is also cut.

California’s drought conditions are actually historically normal however, each of California’s droughts are billed by government and media as the driest period in the state’s recorded rainfall history. Scientists who study the Western United States’ long-term climate patterns say California has been dry for significantly longer periods — more than 200 years.

The Globe spoke Wednesday with Mike Wade, Executive Director of the California Farm Water Coalition on the State Water Board Emergency Water Conservation Regulation. Wade said the most important measure they can take right to highlight the seriousness of California’s water shortage is to connect consumers through the food they eat.

Wade said that the surface supply of water is short, so farmers will have to rely on groundwater. But the state is encroaching on groundwater availability through the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), passed in 2014. And water district irrigation managers are putting caps on water by limiting pumping.

"$2.7 billion bond fund to build water reservoirs sits idle in California

August 16, 2021·

It’s been seven years since drought-wracked California raked in $2.7 billion in bond funds that promised construction of reservoirs to capture excess water runoff during winters.

The money is sitting in a bank account without a single shovel of dirt overturned to begin construction of eight above-ground water holding facilities. Meanwhile, governors and local politicians over the years have called for urban water cutbacks and even rationing for farmers who have watched crops wither and die due to decreased water supply.

All of this is due to the state’s bureaucratic controls that cause major construction projects to take decades to complete.

“That money is held up because of environmental permitting,” Meanwhile, not one gallon of water has been placed in above-ground storage pursuant to this bond measure.”

#10  Roman hydraulic engineers would tell you "Build cisterns, many cisterns!, and catch the falling rain and let nothing escape to the sea!"

But no, that is too unfathomable for Governor Newsom -- we need to ration, ration, Ration! which in practice that only the wealthy get water and the poor suffer from thirst ...besides we need the money for graft on High-Speed Rail and other boondoggles.

#11  California's mountains get feet of snow in the winter. A plan to catch the melt would solve most of the west coast's water needs. Think. California could sell water (they need the revenue). Instead they let it go into the sea. Snail Darter is happy anyway.

Protesters from far-left South Africa party tell France to 'get out of Africa'
[France24] Hundreds of protesters from a radical leftist party in South Africa marched Wednesday on the French embassy in Pretoria to demand that France leave Africa.

Chanting "F*** off, France" and dressed in their trademark red T-shirts and caps, the Economic Freedom Fighters carried placards reading "West Africa is not a colony of the French" and "France must pay reparations for its colonial crimes".

"You killed a lot of people in Africa. Why are you so scared today?" the party's firebrand opposition leader Julius Malema shouted into a microphone, saying he was speaking to "French white supremacists".

Armed police guarded the embassy. French ambassador Aurelien Lechevallier emerged briefly to receive their demands.

"We are friends to African nations," he said.

The protesters arrived in buses hired by the party, according to AFP correspondents.

Malema, a master of political theatre, broke away from the ruling African National Congress nine years ago.

He has attracted millions of supporters, especially among workers and the unemployed. He routinely denounces European and American imperialism, and has supported Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia Looks to Seize Western Companies Who Try to Leave
[PJ] A bill is working its way through the Russian Duma that would allow Moscow to seize Western companies that threaten to leave Russia.

Most Western companies have already left, but the few that remain now face severe pressure to leave or give in.
The law would give the government broad powers to intervene "where there is a threat to local jobs or industry," according to Reuters. It makes it "more difficult for western companies to disentangle themselves quickly unless they are prepared to take a big financial hit."

The law to seize the property of foreign investors follows an exodus of western companies, such as Starbucks (SBUX.O), McDonald’s (MCD.N) and brewer AB InBev (ABI.BR), and increases pressure on those still there.

It comes as the Russian economy, increasingly cut-off due to western sanctions, plunges into recession amid double-digit inflation.

Italian lender UniCredit (CRDI.MI), Austrian bank Raiffeisen (RBIV.VI), the world’s biggest furniture brand, IKEA, fast food chain Burger King, and hundreds of smaller firms still have businesses in Russia. Any that try to leave face this tougher line.

The EU is proposing to toughen its own rules on the Russian sanctions, including stiffening the penalties for violating the sanctions regime. But some Russian politicians don’t get the connection between the sanctions and the war. Former president Dmitry Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, has been particularly vocal about Western companies leaving, attacking "enemies who are now trying to limit our development and ruin our lives."

#3  Tit for tat. The US unilaterally confiscated 300 billion in Russian assets in the west. Did they imagine there would be no repercussions? If US assets in Russia are nationalized (worth an estimated 500 billion) then Russia not only acquires the physical plant free and clear. They also maintain those jobs for their citizens AND the ongoing business profits remain in country instead of being repatriated to the West. They could even lower the price of the products to their citizens since the cost of building the businesses is effectively zero. The next step is a bill in the Duma to negate US patents. That would likewise be a boost to the Russian economy with little possible direct blowback.

Whether the local employees have absorbed skills and mindset to continue producing Western-quality goods on their own is an interesting question. The world as well as Russia will benefit in the long run if the answer is yes, but there is a seventy year history to overcome.

Russia deploys Cold War-era T-62 tanks to Ukraine
[Defense Blog] Photos emerged on social media today reportedly showing the freight train carrying a convoy of older T-62 medium tanks arriving in the southern Ukrainian city of Melitopol, which was captured by Russians.

The 1960s-era T-62 is a Soviet medium battle tank. The first prototype of the T-62 was completed in 1959. In 1961 this tank was officially accepted to service with the Soviet Army.

Russia is likely facing “a shortage” of modern tanks and trying to make up the deficit with outdated combat vehicles.

The team of researchers at the Oryx blog, who have been compiling photo and video evidence, has reported that Russia is now visually confirmed to have lost 700 tanks since it began its invasion of Ukraine three months ago.

According to open-source-intelligence analysts, Russia has lost 18 T-64s; 417 T-72s; 133 T-80s; 20 T-90s; and 112 unknown tanks.
T-54/55 series tanks soon?

#1  ...It gets better - the -62 is, more or less, a direct descendant of the legendary T-34 that steamrollered the Wehrmacht all the way back to Berlin. But after the -62, Soviet designers started with a clean sheet of paper to create their next generation of tanks, the -64 and its successors.

Which means that the -62 has a lot in common, in terms of equipment and parts, with its predecessors the -55 and -54 while it has none whatsoever with the tanks that came after it.

Which in turn means that the already logistically challenged Russians are going to have to set up a separate parts and maintenance system for the -62s.

At least for the ones that work, that is.

This won't end well.

#4  It all depends on how they are used. As the ground grows firmer there is a use for massed armor -- even if it is not the best. Remember that Soviet Russian Armor doctrine is based on mass attacks not solo tank usage.

#5  It depends on what you are doing with them. Against modern NATO tanks, T-62s would not fare well. I understand they are being used as assault guns. Given all the positional fighting, this makes sense. As long as you have infantry support.

#7  1000 tanks streaming through the Fulda Gap

Once upon a time, that was a real fear. But the Soviet Union and its army are gone and there is no way Russia could do this now. A bit ironic to note that Ukraine is the opposite end of the route to the Fulda Gap.

^ That's what the Ukrainians on the front lines in the Donbas think. It's really shitty that their leaders insist on getting them slaughtered in Severodonetsk -- for nothing.

Now even the Washington Post and the New York Times are changing the narrative, from "Stupid Russians! / Russians are sure to lose" to "Oh cruel war / Ukrainians prepare to be slaughtered" in the Donbas.

Ukrainian volunteer fighters in the east feel abandoned
By Sudarsan Raghavan
THE WASHINGTON POST

Updated May 26, 2022 at 5:38 p.m. EDTI

DRUZHKIVKA, Ukraine — Stuck in their trenches, the Ukrainian volunteers lived off a potato per day as Russian forces pounded them with artillery and Grad rockets on a key eastern front line. Outnumbered, untrained and clutching only light weapons, the men prayed for the barrage to end — and for their own tanks to stop targeting the Russians.

“They [Russians] already know where we are, and when the Ukrainian tank shoots from our side it gives away our position,” said Serhi Lapko, their company commander, recalling the recent battle. “And they start firing back with everything — Grads, mortars...."

But Lapko and Khrus’s concerns were echoed recently by a platoon of the 115th Brigade 3rd Battalion, based nearby in the besieged city of Severodonetsk. In a video uploaded to Telegram on May 24, and confirmed as authentic by an aide to Haidai, volunteers said they will no longer fight because they lacked proper weapons, rear support and military leadership.

“We are being sent to certain death,” said a volunteer,
reading from a prepared script, adding that a similar video was filmed by members of the 115th Brigade 1st Battalion. “We are not alone like this, we are many.”

#19  Yes, that mutiny is getting lots of attention in Europe. Mariupol has definitely changed the course of the war.

Here is a link to the formal video announcement of mutiny by Ukraine's 115th Brigade, 3rd Battalion (the Washigton Post journalist got the Battalion # wrong). They uploaded it to Telegram. It's also been uploaded by the American network MSN to their YouTube channel. (The MSN upload screwed up the subtitles; the other upload, linked to here, mistakenly places them as Azov, but that one gets the translation right.)

#20  Mutinies are to be expected now. The image we receive from the propaganda press is full of lies; it's very different on the front lines.

During the First World War, mutinies erupted among combat units in every one of the nations that had fought from the beginning. The French and Russian mutinies are well known, but the British suffered multiple mutinies as well, and the German navy suffered a mutiny in October 1918. Both the Italian and the Turkish armies experienced mutinies after crushing defeats (Caporetto and Jerusalem respectively).

We can expect more mutinies in coming weeks from the hastily-assembled and poorly-led Ukrainian battalions.

Posted by: Oye Como Va || 05/27/2022 20:53 Comments || Top||

#22  Yes, it's excellent. Very popular in France.

It seems to me that Kubrick was criticizing not so much war as the absurdity of military decision-making -- in the film we are never shown the enemy, only the anguish and struggles of the cadres themselves. To me this subject is much more interesting and subtle than the generic anti-war message film.

I agree... people who've never seen combat make it out to be much simpler, morally, than it is. Mutineers aren't cowards. "Rambo" types aren't necessarily heroic.

#24  Looks like retreat, according to the BBC:

Ukrainian troops could withdraw from the big eastern city of Severodonetsk, which Russian forces are close to surrounding, an official there says.

Serhiy Haidai, governor of Luhansk, said Russians were in part of the city. "It is possible that in order not to be surrounded, they will have to leave."

#25  ^ Their only escape route is west along the road to Siversk. That's right into the jaws of the Russian battalions situated just northof the highway (thanks to the Russian capture of Lyman) and the Russian battalions just south of the highway (thanks to the Russian capture of Popasna).

The Russian artillery is just a few miles away from the highway, on either side -- easy shelling distance. That's one hell of a gauntlet to run. Ouch. Poor Ukrainians.

#26  “We shot 30 bullets and then they said, ‘You can’t get more; too expensive,’ ” Lapko said.

Of course. That is why we have multiple sources from multiple perspectives, and then pool our knowledge to tease out the truth that lays underneath. Your comments here are included in that calculation, my dears, received with the same skepticism as all other information sources — though I fear the BBC, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and similar traditional travesties of journalism have earnt several extra doses of skepticism each.

Why the Once-Hawkish Heritage Foundation Opposed Aid to Ukraine
NY Times
May 27, 2002

Heritage has embraced the anti-interventionist fervor that defined President Donald J. Trump’s foreign policy and has swept the Republican Party.

On Thursday, Mr. Roberts published a podcast interview with Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, one of only 11 Senate Republicans to oppose the Ukraine aid package and the author of a recent op-ed entitled “No to Neoconservatism.”

“Neither you, nor we, intend any opposition to an aid package to be dismissive of the heroism that we’ve seen in Ukraine,” Mr. Roberts told Mr. Hawley. “But I can at least speak for Heritage and say, ‘We’ve had enough of business as usual.’”

Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: May 26th, 2022
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 23:15 Washington warned Kiev that strikes from the Ukrainian side on Russian territory, especially far from the border with Ukraine, carry risks of escalation. US representatives are concerned about the use of Western-supplied weapons by Kyiv for this, Reuters reports.

23:13 The Ukrainian fighter successfully worked out an enemy missile in the sky over the Chernivtsi region, said the head of the OVA Serhiy Osachuk.

23:05 The start of a full-scale war in Ukraine significantly "liberalized" the process of obtaining weapons, but now it's time to legalize it, Reznikov said. In his opinion, networks of shooting galleries and shooting clubs should be developed in Ukraine so that citizens have the opportunity to learn how to use weapons.

23:01 Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, after a telephone conversation with Putin, said that he "did not see hope for peace" in Ukraine.

22:59 A senior Pentagon official told reporters that, according to Washington, Russia has lost about 1,000 tanks, about 350 artillery systems, more than 30 aircraft and more than 50 helicopters in Ukraine, CNN reports. At the same time, the Russian Federation still has a great advantage over Ukraine in terms of equipment and manpower. According to a US Department of Defense spokesman, there are now 110 Russian BTGs operating in Ukraine, and the Russians have been able to advance in the Donbas.

22:52 This year, three Ukrainian cities at once entered the rating of the most dangerous cities in the world - Kharkiv, Odessa and Kiev.

22:31 The Russians abducted Viktor Sirota, the secretary of the Oleshky City Council of the Kherson region. According to the mayor Evgeny Ryshchuk, this happened tonight. He also confirmed that the Russians had appointed collaborator Georgy Zhuravko as the "head" of the city's occupation administration.

22:28 Arestovich outlined one of the key problems of the Ukrainian army today - the lack of supplies from the West of long-range multiple launch rocket systems, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine have run out of: is the supply of weapons capable of restoring the ability of the Ukrainian army to "endure" the Russian operational rear. Then the pace of the offensive of the Russian army will instantly drop, they will again begin to suffer heavy losses, and there will be no talk of any striking seizures of Severodonetsk and Kramatorsk, Zaporozhye and Slavyansk. we lost a few weeks ago, and the West did not have time to make up for it for us, because they are thinking about how they would use it on the territory of the Russian Federation."

22:25 The National Bank of Ukraine appealed to the profile committee of the Verkhovna Rada with a proposal to temporarily, for the period of martial law and within six months after its termination, prohibit the collection of overdue debts from military personnel.

22:23 The number of those killed as a result of the shelling of Kharkiv has increased to nine, and the injured - to 19, the head of the OVA Oleg Sinegubov said on the air of the telethon.

21:50 In Chechnya, men are kidnapped and sent to war in Ukraine, several human rights organizations and local bloggers reported at once. According to Kavkaz.Realii , hundreds of abductees are forced to sign contracts under the threat of prison. In one of the illegal prisons there are 100 people, in the other - 30. These data are reported by men who witnessed the "mobilization".

The Vayfond human rights association reported that they already had dozens of applications from residents of Chechnya who announced they were being forced to go to war, including people with disabilities.

21:42 In Kharkiv, as a result of today's shelling, eight people were killed - the body of a five-month-old child was found, the National Police reported. When the shelling began, a young family was walking on the street: a wife and husband, who had a five-month-old baby in his arms. The man died immediately, the woman was hospitalized in serious condition. Subsequently, the police also found the body of a child - a baby from the hands of his father was thrown up by an explosive wave onto the roof of the entrance.

21:33 Arestovich announced the likely capture of Liman: "According to unverified reports, we lost the city of Liman. The way the Russian army captured it shows that there are very talented commanders, and this shows the increased level of operational management and skills of the Russian army."

21:29 Former head of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Alexander Tupitsky was supposed to take part in the return to the legitimate field of Yanukovych, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov said in an interview with Channel 24: "We started preparing for war in February 2021. When the first decision of the National Security and Defense Council concerned Mr. on Tupitsky, who received in December last year a statement allegedly from Mr. Yanukovych, who has nothing to do with our country for the last eight years. In the Russian Federation, there was a project to return Yanukovych through a legal procedure through our courts, OASK."

21:08 In the summer of 2021, at a secret meeting of the National Security and Defense Council for Chongar, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Mykolaiv regions, it was instructed to provide protection in case of enemy invasion. Why, after that, in February 2022, the enemy managed to quickly advance in the Kherson region remains to be seen, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov said in an interview with Channel 24.

20:56 Ukraine has sufficient grain reserves to satisfy domestic and global demand at least until the end of 2022, and even in 2023, but for this it is necessary to stop all hostilities in the Black Sea, said Zelensky's economic adviser Oleg Ustenko in a commentary to the American edition of Newsweek.

20:37 The invaders will use the captured Ukrainian soldiers for propaganda purposes and delay the exchange, experts say. Demonstrative executions are also not ruled out, as the political elite in Russia speaks about. More details - in the material What will happen to the heroes of Azovstal .

20:29 Captured Russians Alexander Bobykin and Alexander Ivanov, who are on trial for shelling the Kharkiv region with Grads in the first days of the war, pleaded guilty. During a meeting of the Kotelovsky district court of the Poltava region, they confirmed that they had violated the laws and customs of war by prior group conspiracy. The prosecutor's office demands 12 years in prison for them. Sentencing is scheduled for May 31.

20:26 Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that the proposals of Western politicians and experts to give up part of the territory of Ukraine in the name of peace are dangerous for his country as well: "This is a very strong signal to all other aggressors, potential criminals, that if you commit a crime and you will not be destroyed within three months, then everything is fine, everything can remain so.

20:21 Poland wants to buy 500 HIMARS missile systems from the United States, which were claimed by Ukraine, said Minister of Defense Mariusz Blaszczak: "We are building up the capabilities of missile forces and artillery. I signed a request for the purchase of about 500 HIMARS launchers for the needs of more than 80 batteries of the HOMAR program We are planning to integrate the equipment with the Polish command and control system."

20:17 Lavrov said in an interview with RT Arabic that the supply of weapons to Ukraine, which are capable of delivering strikes on Russian territory, will be a step towards "unacceptable escalation": "This will be a serious step towards unacceptable escalation. I hope that sane minds in the West, there are still a few of them left, they understand this."

20:11 There will always be a threat to Kiev from Russia, since conquering the capital is the fastest way to conquer Ukraine, said Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar: "We must be aware that there will always be a threat to Kiev. Because destroying Kiev and destroying the Ukrainian authorities is the fastest way to conquer Ukraine.

19:34 On the territory of the Belgorod and Voronezh regions, the enemy continues to prepare reserves and replenish stocks in order to further resume the offensive, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports.

19:18 The Russians have established control over the settlement of Mednaya Ruda, Bakhmut district, Donetsk region, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

19:16 Despite the war in Ukraine, the United States considers China to be the most serious long-term challenge to the international order, Blinken said in a speech at George Washington University, CNN reports. The US Secretary of State, in particular, criticized China for supporting Russia in the situation with the war in Ukraine, saying that this position of Beijing "sets the alarm for all of us who call the Indo-Pacific region their home."

19:05 Finland will help restore infrastructure and Ukrainian cities, support educational reform in Ukraine, Shmyhal said after a meeting with Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

18:59 Albania has offered NATO to use the former Soviet naval base located on its territory, Prime Minister Edi Rama said. The base is located 180 km south of the capital Tirana, and a project for its reconstruction is already ready.

18:57 In Russia, the trial over the legality of the dismissal from service of 115 National Guardsmen who refused to fight in Ukraine has ended. The contract servicemen were dismissed after they refused to perform their official assignment on the territory of Ukraine and returned to their permanent duty station. They challenged the dismissal in court, but the court did not agree with their arguments and recognized the dismissal as legal.

18:49 Putin, in a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, said that the exit of civilian ships from the ports of the Azov and Black Seas "is hindered by the Ukrainian side," the Kremlin press service reports.

18:38 The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, called the Kremlin’s words that Western sanctions jeopardize the world’s food security a blatant lie: “Stop your disinformation, the Kremlin. Not sanctions, but your war in Ukraine interferes with shipping and jeopardizes food security. "More than 20 million tons of grain are blocked by your mines and your war. We need to stop the war and restart the global food supply chains."

18:34 The occupation of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station threatens with flooding of the city and villages nearby, said Alexei Gromov, deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexei Gromov: “Currently, a command post of the Southern Military District is deployed at the Kakhovskaya station. At the same time, the Russians are not doing anything to maintain these facilities in proper condition ", which can lead to an environmental disaster. Now two hydroelectric units are not working at the Kakhovka station, which the invaders do not allow to be repaired. This has already led to the flooding of Kakhovka and is fraught with flooding of nearby villages."

18:27 The head of the Chkalov community of the Kharkiv region, Viktor Solovyov, and the secretary of the council, Konstantin Chernyavsky, who suspended their powers on May 6 due to threats and pressure from the occupiers, were kidnapped on May 25. Unfortunately, a new direction, a new front, and we can't help but pay attention to it."

17:32 Podolyak said that Ukraine is preparing a counteroffensive: "The Kremlin is throwing everything it has into battle, but time is on our side. As soon as Russia is exhausted and loses its offensive potential, Ukraine will accumulate enough forces - the south of our country will be liberated. a matter of one day or a month, but not a matter of a year. The Ukrainian flag will again fly over Kherson. Not tomorrow, but faster than anyone can imagine."

16:37 Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov reported five dead and ten wounded as a result of the shelling of the city center.

16:25 In a military mobile hospital in one of the front-line cities, Ukrainian doctors performed a unique laparoscopic operation - the removal of a kidney in a gunshot wound with the destruction of the organ, said Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar. #4  The Russians are systematically cutting off the remaining Ukrainian battalions in Luhansk, Donetsk and in the South. They are being very deliberate and carefully coordinating artillery, infantry, engineers, intel / recon and drones.

They are advancing on Mykolaiv, the gateway to Odesa. US military planners expect Odesa to fall by the end of June.

They are finalizing the cauldron in the North, at Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. US and other NATO military experts expect that cauldron to be complete by end of next week. They're also pushing north up the Dniepr, and threatening to encircle and cut off the Ukrainians near Zaporizhzhiye.

The Ukrainians can probably hold out for two more months at most, after which Russia will be in complete control of the entire southern Black Sea coast from Odesa to the Azov Sea.

#6  Ukraine's Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi now has authority to order a retest of the 15,000 or so Ukrainian troops who are on the brink of being encircled near Lysychansk.

Previous to May 25, per Ukrainian law only the Supreme Commander i.e. Zelensky could order Ukrainian forces to retreat, but the Z-man overrode that law -- he has outlawed all opposition, remember, and is effectively now Ukraine's generalissimo -- and gave his #2 the authority to order a retreat after 48 hours.

That time has passed as of 18:40 Washington time. Let's see whether the 15,000 Ukrainian elite forces are ordered to retreat this evening.

If not then we will see an enormous victory next week, even bigger and more consequential than Mariupol.

#9  Well, there is one potential remaining escape route available, the road west to Siversk, but that's nonetheless under "fire control" now. Russian artillery is only 5 miles away, so they can pound and degrade the retreating Ukrainian forces. But every other route (including roads and the rail route) is now cut off after today's fighting. Watch that Siversk corridor tonight (tomorrow Ikraine time).

We can only hope that Zelensky's panic leads him to agree to cut his losses and accept territorial concessions at the peace table.

Given Poland's aggressive designs on western Ukraine, it could be that Z-man gets safe passage to Warsaw and a new rump government gets established in a new rump republic covering what remains in Galicia / Western Ukraine.

Economy
Foreclosure-Wave Sweeping US Crests In Chicago
[ZeroHedge] A report released in April by real estate data aggregator ATTOM has bestowed Chicago with a dubious honor. Amid a national surge in residential foreclosure rates, Chicagoans are currently losing their homes in greater numbers than in any other metro area in the country.

“A total of 50,759 U.S. properties started the foreclosure process in Q1 2022, up 67% from the previous quarter and up 188% from a year ago,” the report stated, with Chicago alone seeing over 3,000 foreclosures in the first three months of the year.

If you interpret the numbers as a per housing unit rate, Cleveland manages to pull ahead of Chicago with almost one in every 500 homes foreclosed since the start of 2022. But by the same metric, Illinois still leads the nation on a state level – close to one out of every 800 homes. California, as the country’s most populous state, wins out as the state with the highest raw numbers of foreclosed homes this year. More than 5,300 households in the Golden State had begun the foreclosure process as of April.

As shocking as this spike in home loss is, experts said it was predictable – the inevitable result of the end of the pandemic eviction moratorium. Enacted by Congress in March 2020 under former President Donald Trump and struck down in August 2021 by a supreme court ruling under current President Joe Biden, it was a national exercise in decommodified housing that staved off homelessness for an estimated 1.5 million Americans.

U.S. FDA expands collaboration with Danone to boost baby formula supply
May 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday it has expanded its collaboration with Danone's Nutricia business to boost supplies of specialized medical baby formula bottles to address its shortage among infants with certain allergies or critical health conditions.

The health regulator said about 500,000 additional cans manufactured by Danone would be sent to the United States.

Meanwhile, lawmakers grilled the agency officials on Wednesday over what they saw as a lack of urgency in their response to complaints about possible baby formula contamination at a now shuttered Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N) plant that led to severe nationwide shortages. read more

Abbott controlled 40% of the market before the plant closed, Christopher Calamari, president of Abbott U.S. nutrition, told lawmakers, and the plant accounted for 40% of Abbott's product. read more

(The story corrects to say 500,000 cans, not 5 million, in paragraph 2)

Obama Judge Just Threw Another Roadblock Into Durham's Case Against Sussmann
[Red State] If we were to just look at the facts of the case against Michael Sussmann, they would all appear to support the charge against him: that he lied to the FBI when he said that he wasn’t working for anyone, when in fact he was working for the Clinton campaign. He even wrote a text to FBI General Counsel James Baker, specifically saying that he wasn’t coming in to see him on behalf of a client.

But the judge in the case, Judge Christopher Cooper (an Obama appointee) just made a finding that is likely to hurt the case, former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy notes.

I mentioned the damning text. But the judge just ruled on Thursday that the prosecution can’t argue in its summation that the text is the false statement with which he is charged. In the text, Sussmann said, "Jim — it’s Michael Sussmann. I have something time-sensitive (and sensitive) I need to discuss. Do you have availability for a short meeting tomorrow? I’m coming on my own — not on behalf of a client or company — want to help the Bureau. Thanks." That would appear to be the smoking gun.

But the problem is that they didn’t have the text when they filed the indictment, it wasn’t part of the alleged evidence so they weren’t alleging that was the false statement. Baker claims he didn’t find the message until six months after the indictment was filed, so he didn’t turn it over to them before then. But because it was past the statute of limitations by the time that was found, the Durham team who might ordinarily add it as a separate charge in a superseding indictment couldn’t do that.

That means that their main evidence is James Baker’s somewhat sketchy memory. Because he felt he was talking to a "friend," he didn’t follow the normal protocol that one might if he was an FBI agent doing an interview—that would be one agent conducting the interview, while a second agent would be taking notes.

But that said, that doesn’t mean that the text can’t be considered by the jury.

India-Pakistan
China-India Border Crisis Has Quietly Resulted In Victory For Beijing
[The War Zone] Since the China-India border crisis last erupted, Beijing has secured its territorial claim by installing massive military infrastructure.

Two years have passed since the height of the most recent flare-up in the border crisis between China and India that started in May 2020. The event saw lethal melee combat over Aksai Chin, which the Chinese claim as a part of Xinjiang and India claims as a part of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. Both India and China reported casualties as a result of a June 2020 altercation in this region's Galwan Valley. The crisis itself ended through a number of limited withdrawals of frontline positions on both sides. But now, two years later, the overall strategic picture is one of remarkable Chinese military buildup and encroachment.

Being one of the largest disputed areas between India and China, Aksai Chin sits adjacent to the Kashmir region, another turbulent border for India due to its overlapping claim on the region with Pakistan. Sitting at 38,000 square kilometers, Aksai Chin is a cold, arid, and largely uninhabited desert just a little bigger than Maryland. The area has been long disputed between the two with China extending its first military grab over the region after the Sino-Indo war of 1962. Four decades passed with both countries regularly entering into minor scuffles in the region, but 2020 witnessed a complete change in tempo, pushing two nuclear-armed neighbors into a rapid escalation. Some reports have suggested that China’s aggression came as a result of a new road — the Darbuk—Shyok—Daulat Beg Oldi Road, or DSDBO — that India was building in the region. Another possible catalyst linked to the conflict was a move by India to change the status of Jammu & Kashmir, redrawing maps and borders which included the disputed area — a move China has regularly voiced opposition to.

As the crisis dropped from the headlines following the initial de-escalation, no further progress was made in negotiations. Chinese and Indian troops remain just kilometers apart while steadily increasing their military capacity. Through the crisis, China managed to effectively take control of Aksai Chin — in a practical military sense, this is a departure from its previous disputed status — and has heavily militarized the entire region around it.

During the border crisis in 2020, China established improvised positions at key locations along the edges of its own territorial claim in the region. Chinese forces established tent camps in the Galwan Valley, occupied critical patrol points, sent forces to camp atop mountain ranges along high altitude lakes and set up new bases in open plains. Negotiations during the crisis itself led China to abandon a small minority of these improvised frontline positions, but over the next two years, the vast majority of them developed into permanent all-weather military encampments.

The strength that China has rapidly developed along these borders will severely constrain India’s ability to ever recover access to the Aksai Chin region. Despite the public appearance of the crisis being settled in a Chinese withdrawal, this withdrawal has remained negligible compared to the scale of the territory that China has militarized. As such, China has achieved a form of territorial expansion by bringing Aksai Chin from a disputed status to a de facto militarily occupied status.

India has, of course, not been entirely passive throughout the course of the crisis and the two years that have followed. Initially, its stern response to Chinese expansions into the Galwan Valley quite literally pushed back the Chinese efforts to establish new positions, but its risk-averse approach did eventually allow the Chinese military to dig in at Aksai Chin.

Newest COVID Variant May Be the Most Deadly!
[WCIA.com, hat tip Dallas Morning News] The coronavirus mutant that is now dominant in the United States is a member of the omicron family but scientists say it spreads faster than its omicron predecessors, is adept at escaping immunity and might possibly cause more serious disease.

One bright spot? Booster shots can provide strong protection against the new mutants, Liu said. In general, vaccines and prior infection can protect people from the worst outcomes of COVID-19. At this point, scientists say, it’s too early to know if the new mutant gaining ground in the U.S. will cause a significant uptick in new cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

#13  RE: #4

Bullshit. They are made from the same Alpha strain from 2020.

You are correct, the shots are completely worthless now. In fact, they have negative efficacy. All one needs to do is look at the highly vaccinated countries rates of infections and deaths and compare to places that didn’t vaccinate much, like most African countries. South Africa, which vaccinated the most in Africa, looks as bad as western countries. Covid in US has a 300/100,000 death rate. Most unvaccinated African countries are in the single digits per 100k.

In San Diego I track the weekly Covid statistics and when Omicron hit the vaccinated vs. unvaccinated numbers looked bad so they just split the vaccinated into 2 groups. Those with 2 shots and those with 3 (boosted). So for example, last week for a population of 100,000 people, .31 unvaccinated people will be hospitalized, .17 vaccinated (2 shots) and .17 boosted (3 shots) will be hospitalized. Then they give you a headline number saying “unvaccinated” are twice as likely to be hospitalized as “vaccinated and boosted”. In reality, most normal people consider 2 or 3 shots “vaccinated”. So if you add the people with 2 shots and the people with 3 shots together you get your “vaccinated” group. Which, in San Diego, was .34 per 100k vaccinated were hospitalized. So if you are vaccinated in San Diego and get Omicron you are equally as likely to be hospitalized as unvaccinated. (Plus, they spike the unvaccinated group with anyone where vaccinated status is unknown (homeless people, drug OD’s, illegal aliens, etc)

#15  Bill Gates in Davos says Vaccinations are Pointless

🔥 Bill Gates, of COURSE, attended this week’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he has been outgassing his pie hole again. Apparently he’s an expert on vaccine science because he finagled the rights to the source code for Windows out of his developer business partner back in the day.

The first thing Gates opined about was vaccine passports, which apparently are now “out.” Speaking on a WEF panel, Gates, looking thoughtful and throwing his hands up in frustration, ventured that “the idea of checking if people are vaccinated; you know, if you have breakthrough infections, what’s the point?

Yes, Bill, that’s the point: there is no point. So I guess this means we can question vaccine passports on Facebook now without going to virtual jail?

Then Gates made some other interesting comments — as an expert on pandemics — about how pathetic the current vaccines are. I am not making that up. Chuckling ruefully, he complained, “we should have much better therapeutics … as we do come up with vaccines, we want vaccines that are infection-blocking and long-duration, which, today — you know, the vaccines have saved millions of lives — but they DON’T, uh, have much in the way of duration, and they’re not, they’re not good at infection blocking.”

No duration? Not good at preventing infection? How DARE he! Anti-vaxxer! Hesitant! Science denier!

Here’s a fact about the world we live in: He who has a checkbook is an expert on whatever subject he says he is.

#17  ^#10 WCIA sounded familiar to me, because my wife is from Champaign, IL, where it is a TV and radio station. But the article was in the Dallas Morning News with an AP credit. WCIA is just the first place I found it on the web.

Had one of my IT Security Team get infected in Dublin Ireland. He was in lockdown for weeks until his tests came back negative twice. He said being there the last few weeks was a like a jail.

#20  If the vaccines were saving "millions" they'd have affected the death rate, and we had a second half million dead the second year of the pandemic.
