Somali military says killed seven Al Shabab militants

Update from Garowe at 9:10 p.m. ET — the same story in words rather than video:
Somalia's security forces from the SNA Force continued with the crackdown against Al-Shabaab militants on Friday, just over a week after Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took over from President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who was in charge for five years.

Farmajo had been accused of failing to restore security in the country, a key point that drove campaigns that were concluded recently. Under his administration, there was a resurgence of Al-Shabaab terrorists, who control large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

According to the army, the Somali National Army [SNA] killed seven Al-Shabaab militants on Friday in the southern part of the country, arresting two of them in the process. This was the first major crackdown since Hassan Sheikh took over leadership.

The Chief of Defense Forces General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh says the operation was carried out in Middle Shabelle within War-Ise village, where the elite Danab Special Forces tool part. During the crackdown, Al-Shabaab military trucks were confiscated.

The army chief told state-owned Somali National Television [SNTV] that weapons and money which terrorists have been extorting from the locals were recovered during the operation. The militants use the money to carry out their operations.

"The purpose of the operation was to prevent terrorist attacks against the Somali people," he said, adding that several al-Shabab bases in the area, as well as illegal mobile courts where they used to harass civilians, were destroyed.

In recent weeks, the Al-Shabaab militants have intensified operations against government soldiers on various Forward Operating Bases. A fortnight ago, the Al-Shabaab attacked the ATMIS troops, the Burundian contingent at El-Baraf Forward Operating Base, killing over 30 soldiers.

Libyan Army Frees 11 Hostages and Seizes Weapons

On Saturday, the Libyan elite army unit, known as Brigade 444, said that it had conducted a raid on human traffickers and fuel smugglers’ dens in Nesmah town, some 400km South of Tripoli.

In a statement, the Brigade announced that its forces managed to free 11 foreign hostages, who were being tortured. They were also able to seize large amounts of weapons and ammunition during the raid.

The Brigade indicated that the gang had demanded the families of the kidnapped pay a ransom in exchange for their release.

It added that 8 suspects were arrested, in addition to 6 trucks used for smuggling fuel.

The phenomenon of disappearances, rape, kidnappings, and the killing of citizens has spread across Libya. The Libyan state ranked 20th among the insecure countries, according to the Numbeo Crime Index, as the war-torn country received the high rating of 62.00 in the Crime Index.

The capital, Tripoli, ranked 50th in the world, in the Crime Index classification for cities, and the second in the Arab world, with the Syrian city of Damascus coming first.

The city of Tripoli got 64.27 degrees on the Crime Index, as the classification considers Tripoli one of the cities with a high crime level.

The Crime Prevalence Index aims to assess the general level of crime in 135 countries around the world. The Crime Index is based on several criteria, such as murder, robbery, and rape.

Notably, Amnesty International recently urged the European Union (EU) to reverse its migration policy on Libya. It described the approach as helping return migrants to “hellish” conditions in the North African country.

In a statement, the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) said that more than 82,000 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya. This has been happening for the past five years, since the EU began its cooperation with Libyan authorities to block migrants from reaching European shores, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP).

In 2021, a total of 32,425 migrants were rescued and returned to Libya, while 662 died and 891 others went missing off the Libyan coast on the central Mediterranean route, the IOM said.

In turn, the Popular Mobilization Forces announced the arrest of an ISIS member in Mosul, the center of the Nineveh Governorate.

On Saturday, ISIS claimed responsibility for setting fire to agricultural lands in Daquq district, south of Kirkuk governorate, in the village of Zanqar.

Bus bomb injures 2 in southern Philippines
[BenarNews] An explosion believed to be caused by an improvised bomb destroyed a passenger bus in the southern Philippines on Thursday, injuring two passengers, police and military officials said.

The vehicle, owned by the Yellow Bus Line Inc., was on a busy highway in Koronadal city when the device went off at noon, they said. A few minutes later, a second bomb went kaboom! in a vacant lot near a bus station in Tacurong city, but did not cause any injuries.

"There was no threat received by the bus firm. Our experts are investigating the incident," Koronadal Mayor Eliordo Ogena said, adding that the two passengers suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Maj. Andrew Linao, public information officer for the regional military command, said the earth-shattering kaboom was caused by an "improvised bomb."

"There’s a directive to all units to intensify checkpoint operations and intelligence monitoring," he said.

No one immediately grabbed credit for the bombings, but members of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
(BIFF), a bully boy group that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, have carried out similar attacks.

The bombings Thursday happened hours after the Philippine military confirmed that a top BIFF leader, Abu Turaife, and other fighters were maimed during an air assault on their encampment in Maguindanao earlier this week. The offensive left two gunnies dead and hundreds of families displaced.

Turaife is one of the hardcore leaders of the BIFF, a splinter group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which signed a peace deal with Manila in 2014 and controls a Moslem autonomous area in the south.

On Monday, the military launched air and ground assaults against Turaife and his men in Datu Salibo town in Maguindanao, displacing more than 1,000 residents.

Acting regional military commander Brig. Gen. Eduardo Gubat said Turaife was believed to have been injured during the assaults. Reports gathered by intelligence sources on the ground said he had retreated into a marshland area controlled by the BIFF.

"There were 17 gunnies including Turaife who were maimed," Gubat told news hounds.

Officials have blamed gunnies linked to the group for carrying out two roadside kaboomings in January 2021 that killed three and injured dozens of people.

More recently, at least six people were maimed in April when a homemade bomb went kaboom! aboard a passenger bus in the Parang town. Three months earlier, a 5-year-old boy was killed and six others, including his two younger siblings, were maimed in a similar attack in Aleosan town.

In both cases, IS-linked gunnies were blamed.

ISIS Claims Attack On SDF Leader West Of Deir Ez-Zor

The Islamic State Organization (ISIS) claimed on Friday the attacking of a leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Jazrat Abu Hamid in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

The ISIS-run Amaq News Agency said in a statement that the organization’s militants had attacked with machine guns the car of an SDF leader near his home in the town’s center, injuring him and damaging his car.

A military source from the SDF in the town said that unknown gunmen had attacked a military vehicle, which belonged to the commander Lawrence al-Awwad, near the old police station in the town.

The commander was severely injured and hospitalized to the al-Omar Oil Field hospital, “and he is now at a critical condition,” according to a Doctor in the hospital.

On April 26, ISIS claimed three attacks that occurred earlier against members of the SDF in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Recently, the countryside of Deir ez-Zor has been witnessing a spike in assassination cases which target members of the SDF, employees of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), tribal leaders and civilians, despite intensive security operations conducted by the SDF.

Two days ago, a member of the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) was injured after some militants targeted his checkpoint in al-Hajna, a town in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Turkey Heavily Shells Hasakah Northern Countryside

Turkish forces and their affiliated opposition factions (SNA) violently shelled on Saturday two towns on the contact lines, north of Hasakah, northeast Syria.

“The Turkish forces targeted the center of Abu Rasin town with heavy weapons at about 8 o‘clock this evening,” a local source told North Press.

Turkish forces also bombed the village of al-Ghebish, 1 km west of the town of Tal Tamr, north of Hasakah, with a barrage of artillery and mortar shells. The shelling caused material damage, according to a source in the Tel Tamr Military Council.

The source stated that Turkish drones are currently flying over the town of Tel Tamr.

On Saturday morning, the villages of al-Dashisha, al-Tawila and Tel Tawil, west of the town of Tel Tamr, were heavily shelled by the Turkish forces. No further information was received about the size of the damage, according to local sources.

Following the Turkish “Peace Spring” military operation in October 2019, which resulted in the occupation of the two cities of Tel Abyad, north of Raqqa, and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), north of Hasakah, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US.

The agreements stipulate halt of all hostilities there and the withdrawal of the SDF 30 km in depth away from the Turkish border in addition to conducting Turkish-Russian joint patrols in order to monitor the implementation of the agreements.

Pro-Government Forces Faction Kills, Injures Civilians In Suwayda

Members of a Pro-government forces faction killed three civilians and injured four others on Saturday evening in al-Maqous neighborhood, east of the city of Suwayda.

“An armed faction led by Raji Falhout, who is supported by Military Intelligence, attacked a swimming pool in al-Maqous neighborhood, under the pretext of searching for wanted men, and killed three civilians,” local sources told North Press.

The faction also kidnapped four other young men, whose names North Press was unable to document.

The families of the victims blocked al-Maqous road and fired randomly. The sounds of bullets are still heard around, the sources added.

Despite the arrival of military reinforcements in early February to control the state of chaos, Suwayda governorate is still witnessing security chaos and the spread of gangs backed by government security authorities.

Since the beginning of this year, North Press has documented the death of forty-three people, as a result of the chaos and the insecurity prevailed in the governorate.
