US strike kills 24 jihadists in Somalia: Pentagon
[PULSE.NG] US forces have conducted an air strike in Somalia that killed 24 al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
Death Eaters, officials said Thursday, adding to a spate of such strikes against the al-Qaeda affiliate.

The strike a day earlier was near a "terrorist encampment location" in the Hiran region of central Somalia, US Africa Command said in a statement.

The action came as part of an ongoing mission in which US forces work with African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
and Somali national security forces to fight the Shabaab jihadist movement.

Such "strikes continue to help our partners make progress in their fight against the transnational forces of Evil who oppose peace in Somalia and in the region," said Major General Gregg Olson, Africa Command director of operations.

The Pentagon has increased the rate of strikes in Somalia in recent years, partly because President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
loosened constraints on when the US military can take action against alleged terrorists.

Although the military did not specify in its latest statement, such air strikes in Somalia are typically carried out by armed drones.

Earlier in January Africa Command said a strike killed 52 Somali Death Eaters, and last month the US military said it had killed 62 Shabaab bully boyz during six air strikes in the Horn of Africa nation.

In October, the military said it conducted its largest air strike in nearly two years against bully boyz in Somalia, killing about 60 Shabaab fighters, who are battling to overthrow the internationally supported government in Mogadishu.

Shabaab fighters were pushed out of Somalia's capital in 2011, and subsequently from other towns and cities, by African Union troops.

But the Islamists still hold sway in large parts of the countryside.

They launch regular gun and kabooms on government, military and civilian targets in Mogadishu as well as ambushes on military convoys and outposts.

Libyan authorities detain an ISIS senior leader in Sirte
[Libya Observer] Local officials and residents in Sirte said Thursday that Libyan authorities had tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
one of ISIS big shots in Sirte, Khalifa al-Barg.

Rooters reported a Sirte official as saying that al-Barg was detained, adding that no foreign forces took part in the operation as claimed by residents, adding that the ISIS Death Eater was arrested from his house on Thursday.

Libyan media outlets reported that foreign forces may have helped in the arrest of al-Barg who was the founder of Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
in Sirte.

"Some of Brigade 604 fighters and other authorities along with foreign forces arrested ISIS Death Eater after encircling his house in early hours of Thursday. He tried to fight his arrest using gunshots but at about 3.00 am, he surrendered after suffering a hand injury.

Al-Barg was a fighter in February 17 revolution and then he was appointed head of security committee of Sirte in 2014 and then head of local council of the city. He later founded Ansar al-Sharia group in 2015.

Uganda seeks return of 'extremist' suspects from Mozambique
[PULSE.NG] Ugandan authorities on Thursday said they were planning to seek the extradition of six suspected Islamist Death Eaters being held in Mozambique.

The announcement came two days after Mozambican police said they had tossed in the clink
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
three Ugandans, claiming they were senior figures in a radical Islamist organization behind attacks in the country's gas-rich northern Cabo Delgado province.

Another three were already in jug, Uganda police front man Fred Enanga said.

"We've been working together with the Mozambique government and we understand they have arrested a number of suspects," Enanga said.

Through the foreign ministry, Kampala had expressed "an interest in six of them" who would be brought back to face charges at home, he said.

Uganda does not have an extradition treaty with Mozambique.

One of the suspects was Abdul Rahman Faisal, who said he had nothing to do with the Cabo Delgado attacks, but claimed he belonged to "Al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
in Uganda" -- in an apparent reference to the Somali Islamist Death Eater group which has no known links to the ongoing insurgency in Mozambique.

But he claimed he had nothing to do with the Cabo Delgado attacks.

Enanga said Al-Shabaab did not have any cells in Uganda but explained that Faisal and several others were wanted by Ugandan police in connection with an holy warrior mosque in central Kampala that was raided by police in April 2018.

During the raid, police found weapons and more than 100 women being held against their will along with children who were being "recruited and radicalised into acts of extremism".

"Some people managed to escape the raid and some of them are among the suspects arrested in Mozambique," Enanga told AFP.

"Abdul Rahman was one of those suspects."

Separately, Hassan Kiberu, a local council official in Kampala, described Faisal as head of the Usafi mosque, a rundown collection of ramshackle buildings in the middle of the city.

Described as a "radicalisation centre", the mosque was home to "extremists", police told AFP.

Bahraini court gives death sentence to activist, life terms to nearly two dozen others
[PRESSTV] A court in Bahrain has sentenced an anti-regime activist to death and passed life imprisonment against nearly two dozen other political dissidents as the ruling Al Khalifah regime presses ahead with its heavy-handed clampdown on pro-democracy protesters in the Persian Gulf kingdom.

On Thursday, Bahrain's Fourth High Criminal Court passed the death penalty
on a Bahraini national and sentenced 23 other activists to life in prison, the Arabic-language Lualua television network reported.

Furthermore, the court stripped all the activists of their Bahraini citizenship.

Manama has accused all the defendants of launching an alleged kaboom in the area of the western coastal village of Dumistan back in 2014, which resulted in the death of a security officer, the report further said.

Houthi forces launch new offensive in northern Yemen
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
forces kicked off a new offensive in the eastern part of the Sanaa Governorate this afternoon, the Yemeni group’s official media wing reported.

According to the Houthi forces, their fighters stormed the Saudi-backed troops inside the al-Qarn area of the Nihm District.

The Houthi forces claimed that their fighters managed to capture several points in the Nihm District after they overran the front-lines of the Saudi-backed troops.

Furthermore, the Houthi forces claimed that they killed and maimed dozens of Saudi-led troops during this afternoon’s offensive.

The Houthi forces were previously on the defensive in the Nihm District as the Saudi-backed troops have repeatedly tried to capture the eastern part of Sanaa.

Far-Left Extremists Take Credit for Firebombing French Radio Station
[Breitbart] Far-left anarchists have taken credit for firebombing an office of France Bleu Isère, denouncing the French radio broadcaster as being part of an "industrial hypnosis collective."

The offices were attacked Sunday night in the French city of Grenoble, with one office inside being partially destroyed by fire, France Bleu reports.

Credit for the attack was published on Tuesday on a well-known website linked to the far-left anarchist movement in France with a statement that read, "A lot of people leak news about the media to criticise them, they do not leak gasoline in their buildings to set them on fire."

Italy thwarts Colombian cartel with massive cocaine haul
[PULSE.NG] Italian police on Thursday said they had seized over two tonnes of pure cocaine from Colombia in the biggest drug bust in Italia of the past 25 years.

The drugs, with a street value of around 500 million euros ($574 million), were discovered last week packed into 60 bags at the port of Genoa in a container from the South American country destined for Barcelona in Spain.

"The drugs belonged to several drug-trafficking organizations associated with the gang known as the 'Gulf Clan'," a police statement said in reference to Colombia's famed narco mob.

The Gulf Clan accounts for about 70 percent of Colombia's cocaine production and uses violence and intimidation to control narcotics trafficking routes, cocaine processing laboratories and departure points.

Police replaced the 1,801 packets of cocaine with salt and sent the cargo on its way in a ploy to catch the drug runners, according to media reports.

A 59-year old Spanish national was tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Barcelona when he attempted to collect the shipment, police said.

Once in Barcelona, the drug was destined to supply a Europe-wide market.

The raid followed an international investigation involving police from Britannia, Spain and Colombia, which is the world's leading coca leaf grower and also the biggest source of cocaine, according to the UN.

The biggest cocaine consuming countries are Albania, Scotland and the United States, according to a 2017 UN report.

Record Fentanyl Seizure Made At Border, Enough To Kill 57 Million
[DAILYWIRE] U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced on Thursday that officers made a record-breaking seizure of fentanyl on the U.S.-Mexico border that was enough to kill tens of millions of Americans.

"According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a canine officer alerted other officers to the presence of 254 pounds of fentanyl hidden inside an 18-wheeler carrying cucumbers, during a secondary inspection at the Mariposa port of entry just past noon on Saturday," The Arizona Republic reported.

"This is the largest fentanyl seizure in any port of entry," CBP official Guadalupe Ramirez said. "In CBP, in the history of CBP, this is the largest fentanyl seizure."

In addition to the record fentanyl seizure, agents also seized 395 pounds of methamphetamine from inside the 18-wheeler. CBP estimated the value of the fentanyl, which came in the form of powder and pills, to be approximately $3.5 million.

"Authorities said it was driven by a 26-year-old man who was tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
and charged with possessing drugs with the intent to distribute them," NBC News reported. "His identity and nationality were not immediately available."

The amount of fentanyl seized by agents was enough to kill well over 57,000,000 Americans, given that the DEA states that as little as 2 milligrams can be fatal.

Fentanyl, developed in 1959, "is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin as an analgesic," according to the DEA.

Forces detain German jihadist in Syria: wives
[PULSE.NG] US-backed Kurdish-led forces have detained German jihadist Martin Lemke after he fled the last pocket held by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group in Syria, two of his wives said Thursday.

His third wife, a German national who gave her name as Leonora, told AFP at a screening centre in the province of Deir Ezzor that Lemke, his second wife and herself fled the fighting together.

"We gave up together," the 19-year-old said in English, adding that Lemke arrived with her at the centre run by the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Kurdish-Arab outfit that has spearheaded the fight against IS.

The jihadist group is only hanging on to a tiny rump of its once sprawling "caliphate" and many of its residents are fleeing and turning themselves in before a final offensive.

The SDF separate civilians from suspected active IS members during the screening.

Leonora said Lemke had a health problem which meant he could not fight and claimed he had worked mostly as a technician for IS.

However investigations published in German newspapers portray Lemke, who is now believed to be 28, as an influential figure among foreign jihadists in Syria.

A report in German newspaper Die Zeit in December 2017 said Lemke arrived in Raqa, the de facto capital of the jihadist proto-state, in November 2014 and joined the Hisbah (Islamic police).

He is then believed to have become a member of the feared "Amniyat", IS's intelligence service.

According to Leonora, they married three days after she arrived in IS-held territory, when she was only 15.

The young woman, who was cradling her two-week-old baby, as she spoke from a windswept SDF screening area near the village of Baghouz, said she hoped to return to her family in Germany.

Lemke's second wife, another German national who said her name was Sabina and aged 34, was less willing to speak but confirmed that she fled the last IS pocket with her husband.

SDF officers on the ground refused to comment on the identities of the suspected jihadists being screened and detained at the centre.

Facebook takes down vast Iran-led manipulation campaign
[PULSE.NG] Facebook said Thursday it took down hundreds of accounts from Iran that were part of a vast manipulation campaign operating in more than 20 countries.

The world's biggest social network said it removed 783 pages, groups and accounts "for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior tied to Iran."

The pages were part of a campaign to promote Iranian interests in various countries by creating fake Facebook or Instagram identities as residents of those nations, according to a statement by Nathaniel Gleicher, head of cybersecurity policy at Facebook.

"We can prove that this is content emanating from Iran; controlled by actors in Iran, and most of the content is reposted from Iran state media," Gleicher said during a press briefing.

"But, we are not in position to directly assert who the actor is in this case."

The announcement was the latest by Facebook as it seeks to stamp out efforts by state actors and others to manipulate the social network using fraudulent accounts.

"We are constantly working to detect and stop this type of activity because we don't want our services to be used to manipulate people," Gleicher said.

"In this case, the people behind this activity coordinated with one another and used fake accounts to misrepresent themselves, and that was the basis for our action."

The operators "typically represented themselves as locals, often using fake accounts, and posted news stories on current events," including "commentary that repurposed Iranian state media's reporting on topics like Israel-Paleostine relations and the conflicts in Syria and Yemen," Gleicher said.

TWITTER IN THE WINGS
Facebook's team looked for additional activity related to a large taken-down of Iran-linked content in August of last year, and collaborated with Twitter which provided insights from the one-to-many messaging platform, according to Gleicher.

"This is an encouraging example of the kind of collaboration we are working to build across the industry," Gleicher said.

The operation dating back to as early as 2010 had 262 pages, 356 accounts, and three groups on Facebook, as well as 162 accounts on Instagram and were followed by about two million users.

About two million users followed at least one of these pages, about 1,600 accounts joined at least one of these groups.

More than 254,000 accounts followed at least one of these Instagram accounts.

Less than $30,000 was spent in total by the accounts on Facebook or Instagram ads, paid for mostly in US dollars, British pounds, and euros, according to the social network.

Two women wounded in Qamishli explosion
[Rudaw] Two women were maimed by an kaboom in Qamishli on Thursday.

The two women, Khadija Hussein and Nadia Mohammed, were maimed when a car hit an bomb in the northern Syrian city.

They have been taken to hospital.

Dr. Anter Ibrahim described their condition as stable and "good," explaining that their main injuries were from shrapnel that hit them in the jaws.

A relative of the victims said that they were walking down the road when the kaboom suddenly occurred.

The kaboom was caused by an improvised bomb (IED) thrown into the area by unknown button men near a position of the regime forces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Qamishli is under the control of the local Kurdish-led administration and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The Syrian regime also maintains a presence in the city that is on the border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
. The SDF and regime forces have largely kept an uneasy truce, though a rare clash broke out last September.
