Nike responds to thousands of angry Muslims who want 'blasphemous' shoe recalled
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Nike is assuring potential Moslem customers that it "respects all religions" in response to a Change.org petition calling its Air Max 270 shoe "blasphemous."

Roughly 15,000 people have signed the petition, which demands a recall due to "outrageous" printing they say too closely resembles the Arabic script for God.

"We urge Nike to recall this blasphemous and offensive shoe and all products with the design logo resembling the word Allah from worldwide sales immediately," the petition states. "I urge all Moslem’s and everyone who respects the freedom of religion to sign this petition."

The petition does not state how, exactly, the company is infringing upon anyone’s right to practice a particular religion.

"Nike respects all religions and we take concerns of this nature seriously," the spokesperson told "Today". "The AIR MAX logo was designed to be a stylized representation of Nike’s AIR MAX trademark. It is intended to reflect the AIR MAX brand only. Any other perceived meaning or representation is unintentional."

The Hill noted on Tuesday that Amazon, facing similar complaints, removed over a dozen products that referenced the Prophet Muhammad.

tl;dr: They going to cave.

One simple solution is just stop selling sneakers to the Muslim world. Sure, you lose market share, but save on headaches like this. After all, it's not like they are going to run out and buy your shoes after you give in.

Kabul Control Slips in Afghanistan amid U.S. Talks with Taliban
[AnNahar] The Kabul government is steadily losing its grip over parts of Afghanistan even as American forces intensify their air campaign against myrmidon groups, a US government watchdog said Thursday.

The latest grim assessment of Afghanistan's security situation comes as the US pursues talks with the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and urgently seeks a way out of the 17-year war.

Protest in Benghazi demanding UN envoy to Libya should leave
“You a furriner, bub? You look like a furriner. We don’t like furriners round these parts.”
[Libya Observer] Tens of protesters took to the street in Benghazi, eastern Libya, calling on the UN envoy Ghassan Salame to leave for his "intentional negligence of the role of the Libyan army in fighting terrorism and for favoring Islamists over the army."

"Salame is always issuing statements to fool the public opinion." the protesters said in a televised statement.

They denounced as well Salame's statements that doubt the objectives of the current military operation in southern Libya, led by Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, accusing him of being biased to the Presidential Council.

The protesters took it as far as burning the photos of Salame in front of Benghazi municipal council, demanding him to leave as "he is biased to Islamist Politicians."

Such denouncing voices of Salame in areas controlled by Haftar come after the former had criticized the military operation led by Haftar in southern Libya in a briefing at the UN Security Council two weeks ago, blaming him as well for the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Derna.

Salame's statements caused him lots of trouble with the east-based authorities which called for avoiding dealing with him and sacking him from the UNSMIL.

Haftar's force front man Ahmed al-Mismari said last week that Salame has become a foe and part of the crisis in Libya, not the solution."

Last night, Salame was interviewed by a Haftar-loyal TV channel, and he said he was in constant talks with Haftar to reach a political solution to the crisis.

He said the coalition was "prepared to use more calibrated force" against Houthis to make them abide by a UN-sponsored peace agreement in Sweden last month.

Representatives from the Houthi Ansarullah movement and the Riyadh-sponsored government of ex-president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, reached the truce deal during UN-mediated peace talks in Sweden in December 2018.

Under the deal, they agreed to the withdrawal of their troops and the deployment of UN monitors to the port city, which serves as a critical entry point for food and humanitarian aid.

the Houthis ‐ who control Hudaydah -- have repeatedly complained that the Saudi-led coalition has been violating the ceasefire.

Israel's giant offshore gas field gets platform jacket
[PULSE.NG] Israeli officials went to sea Thursday to mark the arrival of the platform jacket for Leviathan, a major step in the "revolution" the massive gas reservoir is expected to generate.

"The Leviathan gas field is the greatest natural treasure that has been discovered in Israel and the arrival of the platform foundation symbolises our entry into the final stage of its development," said Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, quoted by a government statement.

The 98-metre (322 foot) high structure is designed to support the giant offshore oil platform's deck and "topsides" -- heavy equipment and facilities kept above the water line.

The jacket was built in Texas and arrived over the weekend on a huge barge after a 28-day journey across the Atlantic, according to US firm Noble Energy and its Israeli partner Delek, the Leviathan consortium's lead partners.

The government statement quoted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaking on board a ship near the platform.

"Completion of the Leviathan gas platform and the pumping of gas from this field later in the year is a critical component of the strategic, energy, economic and diplomatic strength of the State of Israel," he said.

"A gas pipeline will run from here and will link us to the gas economy of Europe. It will reach our Arab neighbours."

Leviathan will also supply "clean energy" to Israel that will replace coal and boost the state's coffers with "billions of shekels," Netanyahu said.

"This is a great revolution," he said.

Steinitz noted agreements are in place with Egypt and Jordan to sell surplus gas.

Leviathan was discovered in 2010 and is located some 125 kilometres (80 miles) west of the Israeli port city of Haifa.

It is estimated to hold 18.9 trillion cubic feet (535 billion cubic metres) of natural gas, along with 34.1 million barrels of condensate.

The platform jacket will be fastened to the sea bed, and the topsides are expected to arrive in the coming months, according to a statement by Leviathan.

White Helmets preparing to film false flag chemical attacks in Idlib: Russia
[PRESSTV] Russia has warned that members of the so-called White Helmets civil defense group are making preparations to film scenes of staged chemical attacks in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib in a bid to implicate Syrian government forces and invent pretexts for possible acts of aggression on army troops.

Speaking during a press briefing in the Russian capital Moscow on Thursday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said there were reports that the Western-backed group, which has been repeatedly accused of cooperating with Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
bully boyz and staging false flag gas attacks, has installed cameras and related equipment in several hospitals across Idlib to film the purported victims of fake chemical attacks.

"Tensions around the Idlib de-escalation zone are not on the decline," Zakharova pointed out, adding, "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
hard boys, who are running the show there, do not only shell nearby settlements on a daily basis, but are also actively beefing up their presence near the contact line with Syrian government forces."

Lebanon presidency announces new cabinet line-up after months of impasse
[PRESSTV] Leb's presidency has announced the formation of a new national unity government, putting an end to a nine-month stalemate on the political stage, which fueled the Arab country's economic woes.

The new cabinet was unveiled Thursday during a presser at the presidential palace in the capital, Beirut, after rival political factions managed to hammer out their differences over the government line-up.

The new government -- headed by Prime Minister Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
-- includes 30 ministers from most Lebanese political factions, which have been in talks after the country held in May 2018 its first parliamentary elections in nine years.

According to a statement by Leb's presidency, Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil from Parliament Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, a member of AMAL, a not very subtle Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...

's Amal party, and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, who leads President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
's Free Patriotic Movement
Despite its name a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, neither free nor particularly patriotic...
, have retained their positions in the new cabinet.

Leb's Hezbollah resistance movement has chosen Jamil Jabak as the new health minister, despite the fact that he is not a member of the movement.

'GOVT. WORK CAN NO LONGER WAIT'

Speaking following the announcement, Hariri voiced alarm about the country's economic and financial challenges, saying the time for dealing with problems with "painkillers" is over.

"The time of treatment with painkillers is over. No one can put their head in the sand anymore. Matters are as clear as the sun. All the problems are known and the causes of the corruption and waste and administrative deficiency are also known," the prime minister said.

"Lebanese are living in concern about the economic situation," Hariri said, adding that the government's work could not wait.

Since the May 2015 election, the last Hariri government, which has been appointed in 2016, has been in office in a caretaker capacity.

That election saw Hariri lose over a third of his MPs; however, but kept his status as the leading Sunni Moslem, which enabled him to return as prime minister, a position reserved for his sect under Lebanese law.

Turkey accuses US Coalition members of supporting ISIS and HTS in Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] Certain members of the US-led coalition fighting against ISIS* support faceless myrmidons from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
* terrorist group in the Syrian province of Idlib as they are aspiring to wreck the Russian-Ottoman Turkish agreement on de-escalation zone, Ottoman Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Thursday.

"Certain partners from the coalition support HTS... First, for the termination of the Idlib memorandum. Second, there are countries that are making great efforts to prevent the establishment of a constitutional committee just because we are doing it", Cavusoglu told the Hurriyet newspaper.

He specified that some Western countries from the coalition were provoking HTS faceless myrmidons to violate the provisions of the Idlib memorandum by paying them money for it.

"Russians have a joint operation offer. They say we should remove them [HTS hard boys] from there", Cavusoglu added, noting that the countries of origin of imported muscle from HTS were unwilling to take them back. "There are many people leaving the HTS after we came to the field".

US court orders Syria to pay $302.5 mn over death of reporter Colvin
[Rudaw] A US court has found the Syrian government culpable in the 2012 death of journalist Marie Colvin, ordering a $302.5 million judgment for what it called an "unconscionable" attack that targeted journalists.

Colvin -- a renowned war correspondent whose harrowing career was celebrated in the recent Golden Globe-nominated film "A Private War" -- was killed in the Syrian army's deliberate shelling of the Baba Amr Media Center in Homs on February 22, 2012.

According to the judgment delivered late Wednesday, Syrian military and intelligence tracked the broadcasts of Colvin and other journalists covering the siege of Homs to the media center.

They then targeted it in an artillery barrage that killed Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik.

The federal court in the US capital cited the testimony of a former Syrian intelligence officer who was given the name "Ulysses," who said that after the attack, Syrian officers celebrated the news that Colvin had been killed.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled in favor of the complaint by members of Colvin's family that her death was an extrajudicial killing in violation of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act.

"Marie Colvin was a journalist who was killed by the Syrian government while reporting on the atrocities occurring during civil war," Jackson wrote.

"She was specifically targeted because of her profession, for the purpose of silencing those reporting on the growing opposition movement in the country."

Cathleen Colvin, who brought the lawsuit with her three children, said: "It's been almost seven years since my sister was killed by the Assad Regime, and not a day goes by when I don't think of her."

"Marie dedicated her life to fighting for justice on behalf of the victims of war and ensuring that their stories were heard," she added.

Colvin, who was 56 and working for the Sunday Times when she died, was known for her fearless reporting and signature black eye patch -- the consequence of losing sight in one eye in an kaboom during Sri Lanka's civil war.

Actress Rosamund Pike played her in Matthew Heineman's feature film "A Private War," which was released in November to critical acclaim.

Arkansas publisher holds out against own state as US Senate advances anti-BDS bill
[AlAhram] A US federal court in Arkansas has ruled in favour of criminalising the boycott of Israel while the Senate is voting to advance a federal anti-BDS bill.

Throughout 2018 the desk of Alan Leveritt, publisher of the US weekly ‎newspaper the Arkansas Times, was piling up with letters from the state of Arkansas with ‎an unusual demand: either sign a pledge not to boycott Israel or forfeit all state ‎advertising.‎

It was the outcome of a state law (act 710 of 2017) passed in 2017 by Arkansas’s ‎Republican-dominated legislature that requires government contractors to pledge in ‎writing not to boycott Israel or see their fees reduced by at least 20 per cent. ‎
