An autopsy will be performed on the body of a 15-year-old girl in Quebec's Saguenay region who officials believe died from an allergic reaction to her boyfriend's kiss.
The girl was allergic to peanuts, and while she did not actually consume the nuts herself, officials believe she reacted after kissing her boyfriend who had eaten peanut butter.
The apparently fatal kiss took place last Sunday in JonquiÚre, Que.
Although an adrenaline shot was administered almost immediately, the teen did not recover, Montreal newspaper La Presse reports.
The girl was rushed to hospital, where she eventually died after suffering respiratory failure.

This is actually a real drag in lots of ways besides the unfortunate young girl's demise. Many schools are now prohibiting any peanut products on their property to prevent kids from trading lunchbags and similar exposure vectors as what happened in the article. This eliminates peanut butter sandwiches (which are an inexpensive, easy to make and nutritious dietary component) from kid's lunches at school.

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report. Passers-by were reportedly too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute. They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh. He-he-he-he. And your little dog, too!
A pine cone shortage may have led the squirrels to seek other food sources, although scientists are sceptical, since Bush is to blame for everything that goes wrong.
A "big" stray dog was nosing about the trees and barking at squirrels hiding in branches overhead when a number of them suddenly descended and attacked, reports say. "They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory.

Now that's a rough neighborhood! In my part of the world, chipmunks haven't progressed beyond digging through the flower beds.
A four star general is set to review a revolutionary camouflage technique. The soldiers have been deployed into the reviewing field and have assumed their cover. The general arrives and gazes out over a field seemingly filled with nothing but trees, shrubs, bushes and other assorted flora.
The presiding captain shouts, "Ten-hut!" Suddenly, all the vegetation vanishes and out of the peaceful field rises a fully armed combat squadron standing at attention with arms presented. At a second command of "Positions!" they all melt back into the placid pastoral scene just as before.
The general turns to the captain with fulsome praise on his lips, but before he can speak, one of the trees runs screaming off of the review field. The captain hurriedly ushers the general down to the officer's club for some drinks and then returns to the squadron's barracks demanding to see the soldier who had abandoned his position.
In a loud voice the captain demanded exactly what was this soldier's major malfunction. The soldier replied, "Sir, I didn't mind it when the birds sh!t in my hair. I endured it when the dog trotted over and pissed on my leg. But when those two squirrels came up and one said to the other, 'let's eat one now and save the other for winter', it was just too much, SIR!"
A Swedish drama student was fined 2,400 crowns on Wednesday for reading pornographic stories to a group of six-year-olds as part of a theater project on children's sexuality. A Stockholm court ruled that the stories the man had read out were deeply pornographic and completely inappropriate for the age group, newspaper Dagens Nyheter said on its Web site. It said the stories were about children having oral sex with each other.
The man's lawyer told Swedish radio that he would appeal against the verdict as he had not meant the stories to be seen as pornographic and had not acted with intent.

Ahh yes, a theater project on children's sexuality...it's good to know our fellow citizens in the developed, democratic West are spending their time constructively, addressing society's important issues. I have often regretted the fact that I never became more involved in the theater, film, and the dramatic arts. Would life be more fulfilling if I pursued it as a career? Perhaps it's not too late. I might yet join some local amateur groupâ¦if only to keep an eye on what the hell theyâre doing and crack skulls if they decide it's a good idea to plan a project on children's sexuality!!!

Security forces in the main Ivory Coast city, Abidjan, are on high alert after an overnight raid by unknown gunmen. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the raid on the Agban barracks. Shooting was also heard in other parts of the city. Roads in and around Abidjan were closed but the city is now calm. Tension is high in Ivory Coast due to disagreements between rebels and the president over who should become prime minister, to organise elections. Some 10,000 French and United Nations peacekeepers are monitoring a buffer zone between the rebel-held north and the loyalist south.
"People in civilian clothing came and attacked the barracks but the shooting has stopped," Lt Col Rene Sacko from the military's central command told Reuters news agency. "We are carrying out searches to secure the area. We have no injured or dead," he said. An unidentified police officer told Reuters that there had been 20 attackers armed with Kalashnikovs and that some people had been arrested. The BBC's James Copnall in Abidjan says the shooting lasted between 10 and 20 minutes before the attackers fled.
There have been a number of unexplained attacks in Ivory Coast in recent months - in particular an armed group briefly took control of the southern city of Agboville last July. In July, unidentified assailants attacked police bases in the north of Abidjan. Seven members of the security forces and 17 attackers were reported killed. Supporters of Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo accused the New Forces rebels of being behind that attack. Several diplomats based in Ivory Coast said it was carried out by forces loyal to Mr Gbagbo. Our correspondent says tension is high in Ivory Coast.
High-level African diplomacy has so far been unable to find a new prime minister acceptable to all sides. The UN maintained Mr Gbagbo in power after his mandate ran out in October but said a new prime minister with reinforced powers should be named to take the country to free and fair elections.

China's 200 million cell-phone owners who use prepaid cards will soon have to register with their telecom provider or face a cutoff in service. The new requirement is part of China's efforts to verify the owner of every phone number in the country as it tries to stem telephonic fraud and unauthorized transmissions, including pornographic or politically charged content.
Since the Chinese have as much chance of stamping out pr0n as I have of winning a Nobel, I suspect it's the politically charged content' that they're going after ...
The general plans for the new procedure were announced yesterday by a Ministry of Information Industry official interviewed on sina.com. Implementation is expected to begin by the end of the year, and phone customers will probably have six months after that to turn in their paperwork.
"It's unfair if we require only new mobile phone users to register and ignore existing customers," said Chen Yuping, a senior official at the ministry's China Academy of Telecommunication Research. "More important, the registration mechanism loses its effectiveness."

Customers now have two choices when they buy a mobile phone in China. They can be billed for service at the end of each month, in which case they must register with the phone company by showing an identity card. Of they can simply buy prepaid phone cards almost anywhere on the street. The new rule will require the latter to show identification when they buy the device that activates their phone: the subscriber identity module, or SIM card for short.
By requiring registration from all cell phone users, China says it can do a better job eliminating short-message-system advertising spam, financial frauds, pornography and improper political commentary. One can guess which is the most important...

WARSAW (Reuters) - Russia is annoyed at Poland's plans to host a U.S. anti-missile system, a top Moscow general told a Polish newspaper, adding that such a space umbrella in central Europe would only make sense in a conflict with Russia.
In what critics said was a diplomatic lapse, Warsaw's new conservative government said last month that it was considering hosting the U.S. anti-missile system, making public what had previously been a subject of discreet talks with Washington.
"Of course (such a system) would be aimed against us," General Yury Baluyevsky, chief of Russia's general staff, told Gazeta Wyborcza in an interview published on Friday. "Rockets from other states would never fly to the West over Polish soil."
"Including central Europe in the U.S. anti-missile system would strengthen it in case of a conflict with Moscow ... I don't expect a nuclear conflict between Russia and the West."
The United States is investing tens of billions of dollars to develop the Missile Defense Initiative (MDI), which would use rockets to shoot down ballistic missiles that could carry nuclear, chemical or bacteriological warheads.
Poland's ruling conservatives, who won September's general elections, regard the United States as the guarantor of security for Poland and want the NATO and European Union member to continue its close military co-operation with Washington.
A former Polish foreign minister said Washington had asked Warsaw to remain discreet about the shield plans to soothe Russian concerns that the move would be aimed against Moscow.
The debate about the missile shield coincided with Russia's decisions to ban the import of most Polish food products after reported irregularities in health standards and certificates. Warsaw officials say the trade row may be politically motivated.
Baluyevsky said Russia had no plans to stop Poland from obtaining a rocket shield, saying: "What can we do? Go ahead build the shield, but think what will later fall on your heads."

The leader of the opposition Mariano Rajoy narrowly escaped serious injury when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed. Rajoy suffered minor injuries when the helicopter crashed as it was taking off from the city of Mostoles, near Madrid. Rajoy heads the conservative Popular Party.

Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., acknowledges he got Congress in fall 2003 to press government regulators to decide, after decades of delay, whether the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe of Massachusetts deserved federal recognition.
Dorgan met with the tribe's representatives and collected at least $11,500 in political donations from Abramoff partner Michael D. Smith, who was representing the Mashpee, around the time he helped craft the legislation, according to interviews and documents obtained by The Associated Press. The senator didn't reimburse the Mississippi Choctaw for the use of Abramoff's skybox in 2001, when the tribe threw him a fundraiser there, instead treating it as a tribal contribution. He only recently reimbursed the tribe for the box, four years later, after determining it was connected to Abramoff.
Dorgan says he sees no reason to step down from the Abramoff investigation, which he and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., are leading. He said he had no idea at the time that any of the transactions were connected to Abramoff or the alleged fleecing of tribes. More at the link.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said, though no exact date for the withdrawal of NATO troops has been set but Islamabad is not seeking any extension of it. An appeals court in Pakistan has thrown out a case involving a Norwegian-Pakistani man suspected of killing his daughter because she allegedly had dishonoured the family. Rahila Iqbal's father, her maternal grandfather and a man driving the car had been charged and imprisoned after the June 1 car accident. Now all three men have been released from prison, and Azhar Iqbal hopes to be home [in Norway] by the end of December. "Now he wants to travel home to his family," his attorney, Abid Raja, told Aftenposten.no.

There was no immediate word on why the appeals court threw out the case. The death of Rahila Iqbal sparked headlines last summer, after her husband alleged she'd been killed because she hadn't married the man her family had selected for her.
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has postponed his Asian visit due to "pressing matters," including U.N. budget discussions and other "urgent political issues," the United Nations said Thursday. The check didn't clear with the airline?
Annan was set to leave Saturday on a 14-day Asia swing that included stops in China, South Korea, Japan and Vietnam to discuss U.N. reform and bird flu. According to U.N. officials, the decision to postpone the trip was made following a meeting hosted by the South Korean mission to the U.N. early Thursday, during which Annan discussed budget and reform matters with 27 members of an informal group which meets regularly on reform issues.

I lived in Singapore for years and have had dengue, which makes me at risk (5% fatality rate) from a second strain infection resulting in dengue hemmoraghic fever. I'd be happy if they fined $1,000,000 and took flamethrowers to the offending areas.

To demonstrate that the president is a modern-day Nero, fiddling while global warming threatens to burn the world, a group of "citizen activists" will take part in a "global outpouring of anger at White House inaction" on the issue by wearing George Bush masks and playing violins throughout Washington, D.C., on Friday.
At least 10 masked fiddlers will perform at some of the most public places in the city, according to a press release from the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, which describes itself as "the leading climate action group in the region" and fights "for clean energy everywhere: in the statehouse, in the churches, in the schools and on the street."
Following that unusual protest, the group will conduct a parade of at least 50 hybrid vehicles around the White House on Saturday morning.
The press release states that the demonstrations are being timed to coincide with the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Montreal, which involves leaders from 180 countries in negotiations regarding global warming. "As the rest of the world moves forward on solutions," the release states, "the U.S. government, dominated by oil industry lobbyists, still refuses to adopt the Kyoto protocol or take any meaningful action toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions."
To protest this, citizens across the country are holding demonstrations this weekend to demand stronger U.S. action, ranging from a "Save New Orleans: Stop Global Warming" party in the French Quarter to Native American drumming in Arizona to the dumping of a ton of coal on the campus of Penn State University.

The President has authorized the Department of Defense to assist Santa with the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Status of acquisitions follows:
Day 1- Partridge in a pear tree: The Army and Air Force are in the process of deciding whose area of responsibility Day 1 falls under. Since the partridge is a bird, the Air Force believes it should have the lead. The Army, however, feels trees are part of the land component command's area of responsibility. After three months of discussion and repeated OpsDepsTank sessions, a $1M study has been commissioned to decide who should lead this joint program.
Day 2 - Two turtle doves: Since doves are birds, the Air Force claims
responsibility. However, turtles are amphibious, so the Navy-Marine Corps team feels it should take the lead. Initial studies have shown that turtles and doves may have interoperability problems. Terms of reference are being coordinated for a four-year, $10M DARPA study.
Day 3 - Three French Hens: At State Department instigation, the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs has blocked offshore purchase of hens, from the French or anyone else. A $6M program is being developed to find an acceptable domestic alternative.
Day 4 - Four Calling Birds: Source selection has been completed, with the contract awarded to AT&T. However, the award is being challenged by a small disadvantaged business.
Day 5 - Five Golden Rings: No available rings meet MILSPEC for gold plating. A three-year, $5M accelerated development program has been initiated.
Day 6 - Six Geese a-Laying: The six geese have been acquired. However, the shells of their eggs seem to be very fragile. It might have been a mistake to build the production facility on a nuclear waste dump at former Air Force base that was closed under BRAC.
Day 7 - Seven Swans a-Swimming: Fourteen swans have been killed trying to get through the Navy SEAL training program. The program has been put on hold while the training procedures are reviewed to determine why the washout rate is so high.
Day 8 - Eight Maids a-Milking: The entire class of maids a milking training program at Aberdeen is involved in a sexual harassment suit against the Army. The program has been put on hold pending resolution of the lawsuit.
Day 9 - Nine Ladies Dancing: Recruitment of the ladies dancing has been halted by a lawsuit from the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Association." Members claim they have a right to dance and wear women's clothing as long as they're off duty.
Day 10 - Ten Lords a-Leaping: The ten lords have been abducted by terrorists. Congress has approved $2M in funding to conduct a rescue operation. Army Special Forces and a USMC MEU(SOC) are conducting a "NEO-off" competition for the right to rescue.
Day 11 - Eleven Pipers Piping: The pipe contractor delivered the pipes on time. However, he thought DoD wanted smoking pipes. DoD lost the claim due to defective specifications. A $22M dollar retrofit program is in process to bring the pipes into spec.
Day 12 - Twelve Drummers Drumming: Due to cutbacks only six billets are available for drumming drummers. DoD is in the process of coordinating an RFP to obtain the six additional drummers by outsourcing; however, funds will not be available until FY 07.
As a result of the above-mentioned programmatic delays, and due to a High OPTEMPO that requires diversion of modernization funds to support current operations, Christmas is hereby postponed until further notice.

A Swedish drama student was fined 2,400 crowns on Wednesday for reading pornographic stories to a group of six-year-olds as part of a theater project on children's sexuality. A Stockholm court ruled that the stories the man had read out were deeply pornographic and completely inappropriate for the age group, newspaper Dagens Nyheter said on its Web site. It said the stories were about children having oral sex with each other.
The leader of the opposition Mariano Rajoy narrowly escaped serious injury when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed. Rajoy suffered minor injuries when the helicopter crashed as it was taking off from the city of Mostoles, near Madrid. Rajoy heads the conservative Popular Party. 
Pakistan Thursday denied permit to extend the quake mission of NATO troops beyond 90-days, ending in February. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said, though no exact date for the withdrawal of NATO troops has been set but Islamabad is not seeking any extension of it. She said that Islamabad will stick to its plans. The Foreign Secretary Riaz Mohammad Khan met with NATO Ambassador Mr. Carsten Fausboll and assured him of Pakistans cooperation to facilitate to carryout the withdrawal. The Foreign Secretary conveyed to the Ambassador that the relief assistance provided by NATO through its relief operation in Pakistan, and also its air and sea lifts of humanitarian assistance, have been highly appreciated by the people and the Government of Pakistan.
