Students Held Hostage in Baily Colorado
A gunman is holding two girls hostage at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey. Jefferson County spokesperson Jackie Kelley said the parents of the two students being held have not yet been notified. "We have almost no information on this suspect," she said. We don't know who he is or what he wants." "We are working on establishing a more reliable means of communications with the suspect," she said, but could not divulge details. She said investigators did not know if the gunman was in a position to monitor media reports.

Kelley said there were no reported injuries, despite multiple shots fired. Originally, six students were taken hostage around noon, in a second-floor classroom, she said, but four had been released. Kelley said the gunman is an adult male, between 35 and 50 years old. He is armed, but the caliber of his weapon was unknown. Suspicious devices were found at the school, she said, prompting the bomb squad's response.

CNN reported that the gunman was married to a woman who works at the school.

Park County authorities requested help from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department's bomb squad and SWAT team, said Jim Shires, Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman. Kelley said more than 20 jurisdictions had sent investigators. Shires said Park County is a small department and doesn't have a complete SWAT team. Park County has set up a command post across the street from the high school. Think Southpark City which is actually Fairplay the seat of Park county.

Televised images showed students lined up and boarding school buses in an orderly way, near the school, a few hours after the standoff began. Cheers erupted shortly before 3 p.m., when the buses arrived at Deer Creek Elementary School, the designated pickup spot. Deer Creek's principal, Paul Sandos, was directing parents and students to a nearby hillside, segregating groups by high school, middle school and elementary school.

Parents waved joyfully, many shouting, "I love you," when they spotted their children through the bus windows. Sarah Mendoza was overcome with emotion when she spotted her son who attends Fitzsimmons Middle School. "This is a parent's worse nightmare," she said of the standoff. "I can't tell you how happy I am."

#1  Just heard on local television that one hostage was shot and is in critical condition in a Denver hospital. It also mentioned that the hostage-taker had shot himself, but I can't verify that yet. It's currently live on the local news station (Ch 13, KRDO, CO Springs, CO). Will try to see what the Colorado Springs Gazette has to say on their local news site later.

#2  Gazette is now reporting the person who took the hostages has died from shooting himself. No names yet.

#3  Here's the Gazette update on the story, OP.
Gunman dead after taking hostages at Bailey high school
The Associated Press

BAILEY — In a scene recalling the horror of Columbine, an adult gunman walked into the high school of this mountain town Wednesday, shot and critically wounded a student and then killed himself after SWAT team members entered the building, authorities said.

His voice breaking, Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener said authorities decided to enter the school after he cut off negotiations and set a deadline. At the time, he had turned four student hostages loose, but was still holed up with two girls.

“It was then decided that a tactical solution needed to be done in an effort to save the two hostages,” the sheriff said. “Entry was made. The suspect shot one of the hostages, then shot himself.”

He said the suspect had threatened his hostages virtually throughout the four-hour ordeal. The suspect was not immediately identified and the sheriff was at a loss to explain a motive. “I don’t know why he wanted to do this,” Wegener said.

The gunman walked into the high school Wednesday, fired at least two shots and took six people hostage, authorities said as hundreds of students were evacuated.

Students from the two evacuated schools were taken to another school for a head count. Ambulances were parked in the end zone of the school’s football field and a tank-like SWAT team vehicle was parked nearby on a closed-down highway. US HWY 285 is the only route in and out of Bailey. Woman at Fla. Airport Arrested With Gun
Most likely a deranged/stoopid person, so not WoT related.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A woman was arrested after security screeners at Tampa International Airport found a loaded handgun tucked in her carryon bag, authorities said.

Mavis Cobb Thornton, 58, was taken into custody after a screener discovered the .38-caliber revolver, loaded with three bullets, in her bag as she passed through a security checkpoint Monday, police said.
I'm pleasantly surprised that the TSA screener noticed.
Thornton is on medical leave from her job as an accounting clerk for the Hillsborough County school district, district officials said. She and her husband, Charles, had tickets for a Delta flight Monday, but airport officials didn't know their destination.

Mavis Thornton did not give a statement to police, but her husband told authorities he did not know his wife had the gun. She does not have a concealed weapons permit, airport officials said.

She was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon. She was booked into the county jail and released after posting bail. A phone message left at her home was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Terrell Owens Hospitalized: Attempted Suicide?
Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens was reportedly hospitalized Tuesday night after what is being called an allergic reaction to pain medication. FOX News is reporting that Owens may have attempted suicide. FOX News Channel says that KDFW/Channel 4 in Dallas initially made this claim.

KTVT/Channel 11 is reporting that a woman named "Etheridge," likely Owens' publicist Kim Ethridge, called police and reported a suicide attempt. The station said Owens ingested 35 pills. According to the Dallas Police Department incident report, Owens told police he took more than 30 pills in a suicide attempt. A news conference is scheduled for later today during "working hours."

"This is not serious," Owens' publicist Kim Etheridge said in Wednesday's online edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Kim will be hitting the meds herself later.
Because suicide attempts are never serious, anyone with any psychiatric training knows that. Do publicists really get paid to say such remarkably stoopid things?
The AP reports that no teammates or Cowboys officials were seen entering the hospital late Tuesday night.
Gee, I can't understand why.
Owens' status for Sunday's game against Tennessee is not immediately known. He was expected to practice Wednesday for the first time since breaking the bone leading to his right ring finger a week ago Sunday night.
"I sense a great disturbance in the Force. It's as if milions of Cowboys fans cried out in terror and were suddenly silent."

#5  Would not surprise me if it really was a reaction to the post surgical medication. My father had a similar reaction a few years ago while he was in the hospital; he tried to remove tubes and such. He describes it as being psychotic, and no knowledge of what he was doing....

My best friend's mother also had a similar reaction when she was prescribed some conflicing meds as well. I advised him to sue the doctor for deviation of standard of care; the Physicians desk reference even told of the possibility of the drug interaction.
Posted by: Mark E. || 09/27/2006 11:30 Comments || Top||

#6  Ditto, Mark. My sister, a normally well adjusted and happy person, went into a deep depression due to side effects from pain meds. I'm covinced she would have harmed herself if she hadn't been hospitalized and monitored. As soon as the meds cleared her system, she was fine. We don't know enough to judge this yet.
Posted by: mcsegeek1 || 09/27/2006 12:28 Comments || Top||

#7  I'd be surprised if it was a true premeditated suicide attempt as well. I think it prolly was more along the lines like #5&6 posted above. I think he just had surgery on a broken finger. So, maybe he had an allergic reaction and took it to the extreme. Although I think T.O. is an idiot & one of the most selfish f*cktards in the NFL I certainly don't wish death on him. (However, I'm not above wishing he gets a well delivered hit from some d-back or linebacker which results in a mild concussion).

#9  Fabulous recipe, indeed, Fred. As for the problem, England need merely snatch a couple of breeding pairs, let them breed in captivity so that all the fledgelings live to sexual maturity, then release them in the wild. Do this for a decade or so and they'll find themselves with a surplus of the critters. Unless the problem is merely due to a deficit of barns in these suburbanized days, and it becomes a matter of providing suitable nesting sites for the critters as well. Merely providing suitable housing and preventing the ravages of sparrows and starlings has resulted in a dramatic increase in the no longer endangered Eastern American Bluebird.

India-Pakistan
Musharraf learnt to make time bomb while in college
SPS Perv! self praise stinks Besides which these are LAME stories!

NEW YORK: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf learnt the art of making a time bomb when he was in college and got rapped by his warden when he pulled a prank to scare him.

"It was in Forman Christian College (in Lahore) that I learned how to make a time bomb, which I later used as a commando to good effect," Musharraf writes in his book "In The Line Of Fire".

He candidly admits that in today's age of terror, this is hardly a thing to own up to "but those were relatively innocent times, and the only kind of home-made bomb then known was the Molotov cocktail".

Musharraf says he soon learnt that the fuse of a normal firecracker attached to a filterless cigarette could become a timed fuse, depending on the length of the cigarette.

It was time to experiment. Musharraf and three others left a time cracker in a big steel trash bin outside the house of their warden, Datta. There was a "deafening bang" and everyone started running towards the warden's house, recalls Musharraf in his 335-page book.

Two other "bombs" placed outside the assistant warden's house and inside a mail box also exploded, creating "utter confusion".

Hameed, one of the quartet, was threatened by Datta to spill the beans or face expulsion. When this was conveyed to him, Musharraf told Hameed to speak the truth. Hameed then disclosed that Musharraf was the culprit.

Recounting the incident, Musharraf says Datta called him to his home and asked, "Pervez, you are the block monitor, and you did this?"

The Pakistan President said he then felt very ashamed.

"Never do this again," Datta told him. "That is when I learned the power of truth, a lesson that has never left me."

Musharraf also gave glimpses of other adventures he had during his student days. Hostel gates would shut by eight in the evening and no student was allowed to go out and visitors were not allowed to enter.

There was a mango tree next to a hedge at the hostel's periphery. "Thanks to my gymnastics, I could climb the tree and jump over and across the high hedge. So would some of my friends."

They would go for a movie that ran from nine pm to midnight, usually at the Regal cinema, and return to college on foot because tonga-drivers refused to go that far at night.

Just outside the college gate, Musharraf says, there was a mosque and no one could stop them from sleeping there.

"Early in the morning, when the college gates opened, we would sneak in."

Rated a top gymnast, Musharraf says he also won the college body-building competition and took part in cross-country running.

His first brush with death, Musharraf says, happened at FC College, thanks to a mango tree. Prompted by friends, he climbed the tree. Hanging upside down from a branch, he plucked mangoes with his feet.

The branch snapped, he came crashing down and passed out. "My friends thought I was dead," Musharraf says, adding he was young and strong and soon recovered.

Ohio car dealer drops 'Jihad' commercial
CHICAGO: A car dealership in Ohio has decided not to run a commercial proclaiming a "jihad" on the US auto market, a Muslim activist group said on Monday. The Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations released a letter from the dealership offering an apology and saying the radio ad, which had never been aired, was a misguided attempt at humour. "We appreciate the dealership's constructive reaction to feedback about the proposed advertisements," said Adnan Mirza, director of the group's Ohio office. "We accept the apology ... and hope that it and the decision not to air the spots will bring this incident to a close."

The statement from the dealership, Dennis Mitsubishi in Columbus, said "A large number of people have contacted us. Lots of them have seen the humour we were trying to convey, but far too many were clearly bothered by it. This was simply an attempt at humor that fell short." It also offered a "sincere apology to anyone who was offended". The group on Sunday had complained publicly about plans for a commercial it said would have proclaimed a "jihad" on the US auto market offering "Fatwa Fridays" with sales representatives giving play swords to children.

#6  I'm shocked, 6. Shocked I tell you. It's a Kurt Russell movie and is mostly forgettable, but the scene where one of the car salesmen from New Deal Used Cars is dressed up like Wild Bill, firing a shotgun at the cars of the competitor across the street, and doing a live TV commercial while doing it, never fails to make me laugh my ass off.

#7  A totally histerical bad movie. IMDB has a section of the best quotes, I forgot about this one where Jeff (Marshall Lucky) lies to a FBI agent about the car that got blown up:

"Uh, well, yes. As I say, Inspector, I heard this large explosion and I rushed out, I couldn't tell what was going on. I saw the car over there in flames and all these strange little characters, you know, with towels on their heads, weird little goatees and stuff, running around yelling: "Ayatollah, Ayatollah." Then they all got in a car and drove away. I guess it was Iranian students out to discredit the American way of life. I can't imagine who else would do such a thing."
