Students Held Hostage in Baily Colorado
2006-09-27
A gunman is holding two girls hostage at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey. Jefferson County spokesperson Jackie Kelley said the parents of the two students being held have not yet been notified. "We have almost no information on this suspect," she said. We don't know who he is or what he wants." "We are working on establishing a more reliable means of communications with the suspect," she said, but could not divulge details. She said investigators did not know if the gunman was in a position to monitor media reports.

Kelley said there were no reported injuries, despite multiple shots fired. Originally, six students were taken hostage around noon, in a second-floor classroom, she said, but four had been released. Kelley said the gunman is an adult male, between 35 and 50 years old. He is armed, but the caliber of his weapon was unknown. Suspicious devices were found at the school, she said, prompting the bomb squad's response.

CNN reported that the gunman was married to a woman who works at the school.

Park County authorities requested help from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department's bomb squad and SWAT team, said Jim Shires, Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman. Kelley said more than 20 jurisdictions had sent investigators. Shires said Park County is a small department and doesn't have a complete SWAT team. Park County has set up a command post across the street from the high school. Think Southpark City which is actually Fairplay the seat of Park county.

Televised images showed students lined up and boarding school buses in an orderly way, near the school, a few hours after the standoff began. Cheers erupted shortly before 3 p.m., when the buses arrived at Deer Creek Elementary School, the designated pickup spot. Deer Creek's principal, Paul Sandos, was directing parents and students to a nearby hillside, segregating groups by high school, middle school and elementary school.

Parents waved joyfully, many shouting, "I love you," when they spotted their children through the bus windows. Sarah Mendoza was overcome with emotion when she spotted her son who attends Fitzsimmons Middle School. "This is a parent's worse nightmare," she said of the standoff. "I can't tell you how happy I am."

#6  The girl died about 6:45 this evening. May she rest in peace, and may the bas$$$$ that killed her burn in hell forever.

Gunman dead after taking hostages at Bailey high school
The Associated Press

BAILEY — In a scene recalling the horror of Columbine, an adult gunman walked into the high school of this mountain town Wednesday, shot and critically wounded a student and then killed himself after SWAT team members entered the building, authorities said.

His voice breaking, Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener said authorities decided to enter the school after he cut off negotiations and set a deadline. At the time, he had turned four student hostages loose, but was still holed up with two girls.

“It was then decided that a tactical solution needed to be done in an effort to save the two hostages,” the sheriff said. “Entry was made. The suspect shot one of the hostages, then shot himself.”

He said the suspect had threatened his hostages virtually throughout the four-hour ordeal. The suspect was not immediately identified and the sheriff was at a loss to explain a motive. “I don’t know why he wanted to do this,” Wegener said.

The gunman walked into the high school Wednesday, fired at least two shots and took six people hostage, authorities said as hundreds of students were evacuated.

Students from the two evacuated schools were taken to another school for a head count. Ambulances were parked in the end zone of the schoolÂ’s football field and a tank-like SWAT team vehicle was parked nearby on a closed-down highway. US HWY 285 is the only route in and out of Bailey. #1  Just heard on local television that one hostage was shot and is in critical condition in a Denver hospital. It also mentioned that the hostage-taker had shot himself, but I can't verify that yet. It's currently live on the local news station (Ch 13, KRDO, CO Springs, CO). Will try to see what the Colorado Springs Gazette has to say on their local news site later.
