#1 I've been a fan of Tom Barnett ever since I happened to catch him giving a presentation on C-SPAN and ended up reading "The Pentagon's New Map". I'd like to belive his thesis that a near peer war between the US and China just ain't gonna happen. However, given the Chinese tendency to act like petulant childen ( this incident, the P3 downing) and their continuing miltary buildup ( anti-satellite weapons tests, planned military space stations, blue water navy, etc) it looks like they are betting on conflict sooner or later.

#2 More likely they're betting they can spook some weenie like Bambi into letting them have Taiwan.

#3 Didn't they make the same claim during the P3 downings? That it was operating in Chinese airspace?

#4 The proliferation of Chinese nuclear warhead blueprints and the Chinese ballistic missiles to carry them was the violation of "international law".

So was the unprovoked attack and annexation of Tibet and the murder of hundreds of thousands of its people.

#5 I'd agree the chance of a war of the US against China is highly unlikely. But a war of China and India? Not so unlikely. Or China and Japan? And who would the US help? Then there's the whole who would you rather be friends with, the US or China? And we'll kick your teeth in too, if you don't give the correct answer. The Chinese will do everything they can to get at us, but all out war outside the continent of Asia? Unlikely for a looooong time.

#8 Wonder if this is an answer to HIllary's request that the Chinese buy up more US bonds.

Personally I think everyone in Washington should have expected this. The Chinese are simply testing the new President much as they tested Bush. The test is easier this go around, no hostages. That says a lot.
