[Dirty Bubble Media] Several days ago, the Wall Street Journal published in-depth look at the relationship between Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) and a group of Kazakhstani businessmen. SBF invested over $1 billion into Genesis Digital Assets, a Cyprus-based Bitcoin mining firm with the majority of its operations based in Kazakhstan. As part of that investment, FTX paid $550 million for shares in the company in early 2022. Some 70% of that was paid to one Rashit Makhat, a Kazakhstani oligarch with close ties to the ruling regime. SBF even met with the president of Kazakhstan as part of a mission to sell the company on crypto.
It turns out that Genesis Digital Assets is not the only link Mr. Bankman-Fried and FTX established with well-connected oligarchs. Another example is the now-defunct crypto derivatives exchange ZUBR.io. In 2021, it was announced that FTX had purchased the Gibraltar-registered ZUBR exchange for $11 million. FTX subsequently used ZUBR as a vehicle to obtain a derivatives exchange license in Gibraltar.
[NYP] Michigan State Police shot and killed a man who pointed a laser and fired a rifle at a police helicopter on Tuesday.
The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. when the helicopter circled north of downtown Detroit, according to police.
The 33-year-old man, whose name has not been released, had been staying in the abandoned home at the time of the shooting.
Two state troopers shot and killed the suspect, who recently moved into the home, according to a neighbor moments later.
In the video, the man emerged from the second-story window and pointed a green laser at the aircraft.
"We got somebody hitting us with a green laser on the rear of the house, upper window," the helicopter pilot said. Fuel and oil pressure steady. We'll circle back and make one more low-level pass over the patio. When he comes out, he's yours.
Moments later, the man exited the house and aimed a "long gun" toward the hovering helicopter before opening fire.
"Now there’s somebody standing at the back door. Right now, they’re in the backyard," the pilot said. "He actually might, he might be armed. He almost looks like he’s holding a long gun pointed at us right now. Yeah, he’s shooting at us right now. He’s firing rounds. He’s got a long gun, extended magazine."
Police recovered five firearms at the abandoned home, including the one the suspect had used to fire on the aircraft.
[Aljazeera] Israel has launched multiple air attacks on the blockaded Gaza Strip a day after Israeli forces killed nine Palestinians — including an elderly woman — in the Jenin refugee camp, marking one of the deadliest raids in the occupied West Bank by Israel’s military in years.
Local sources in Gaza told Al Jazeera that Israeli warplanes had hit al-Maghazi refugee camp in the centre of the territory, with at least 13 strikes in the early hours of Friday.
The al-Zaitoun neighbourhood in the south of Gaza City was also hit, as well as an open area east of Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza.
Witnesses and local media reported that Israeli drones fired two missiles at targets in Gaza before the fighter jets struck.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, and "cautious calm" had returned to Gaza by the morning, said Al Jazeera correspondent Maram Humaid.
The Israeli army said the air attacks on Gaza — one of the most densely populated areas in the world with 2.1 million residents — followed after two rockets were fired towards Israel at about midnight (22:00 GMT).
Air raid sirens had sounded in southern Israel as the initial two rockets were fired and then again after the Israeli air attacks.
The Israeli army said the rockets were intercepted by Israel’s air defence system and the country’s Channel 12 aired footage of Israeli interceptor missiles being launched into the night sky above the city of Ashkelon, about 12km (7 miles) north of Gaza.
No group has claimed responsibility for the reported rocket fire.
However, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the armed groups in Gaza "will continue to carry out [their] duty to defend the Palestinian people and their sanctities, and will remain the people’s shield and sword".
[Reuters] Late last summer, a plot of land on the edge of a small farming community in southern Russia began to fill with scores of newly dug graves of fighters killed in Ukraine. The resting places were adorned with simple wooden crosses and brightly coloured wreaths that bore the insignia of Russia’s Wagner Group - a feared and secretive private army.
There were around 200 graves at the site on the outskirts of Bakinskaya village in Krasnodar region when Reuters visited in late January. The news agency matched the names of at least 39 of the dead here and at three other nearby cemeteries to Russian court records, publicly available databases and social media accounts. Reuters also spoke to family, friends and lawyers of some of the dead.
Many of the men buried at Bakinskaya were convicts who were recruited by Wagner last year after its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, promised a pardon if prisoners survived six months at the front, this reporting showed. They included a contract killer, murderers, career criminals and people with alcohol problems.
For months, Wagner has been locked in a bloody battle of attrition to take the towns of Bakhmut and Soledar in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. Western and Ukrainian officials have said it is using convicts as cannon fodder to overwhelm Ukraine’s defences. Gazooks fired several rockets toward southern Israel and Israeli Air Force warplanes carried out sorties in the Gaza Strip early Friday as tit-for-tat fighting broke out amid sky-high tensions following a West Bank raid that left nine Paleostinian dead a day earlier.
At least three rockets were fired from Gaza at around 3:30 a.m. Friday, as Israeli jets bombed sites said to belong to the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", terror group in retaliation for a rocket attack hours earlier. One of the rockets was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system, another landed in an open field and a third fell short of the border, the army said, after alarms sounded in the towns Nir Oz, Ein Habesor and Magen. The Israel Defense Forces said it was also investigating after incoming sirens were activated near Kfar Aza, a kibbutz near the Gaza border.
The rocket attacks came as Israeli jets carried out a series of bombing raids in the central Gaza Strip in response to Gazook Death Eaters firing two rockets toward Ashkelon at midnight. Both projectiles were intercepted by Iron Dome.
The military said it targeted an underground facility where rockets are manufactured in the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza. It said the site was in an area surrounded by residential buildings and 180 meters (590 feet) from a storage facility maintained by UNRWA, the United Nations ...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks... relief agency for Paleostinian refugees.
Footage released by the military showed the site being bombed from the air.
"The attack will lead to significant harm to Hamas efforts to build up its arms," the IDF said in a statement.
In response to the second round of rocket attacks, the IDF said fighter jets targeted "one of the most significant" Hamas military bases, in the northern Gaza Strip.
On Friday morning Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that he had ordered the military to "prepare for action with a range of offensive means aimed at quality targets, in case we need to continue — until quiet is restored for the citizens of Israel."
He also said that the terror groups in Gaza had suffered a "severe blow" overnight.
The military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, claimed that its fighters fired anti-aircraft weapons and ground-to-air missiles at the Israeli planes carrying out the attacks.
There were no reports of injuries on either side.

There was no claim of responsibility for the rocket launches against Israeli towns, which came after Israeli officials expressed concerns about potential retaliation, including in the form of rocket fire from Gaza, over the deaths of nine Paleostinians during an IDF raid against a Paleostinian Islamic Jihad ...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. Both Islamic Jihad and Hamas threatened to hit back over the deaths.
Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from the Strip and generally responds to rocket fire with airstrikes against the group regardless of who launched the attack.
According to Israeli officials, the IDF had foiled a "ticking time bomb" in Jenin on Thursday after receiving "accurate intelligence" from the Shin Bet security agency about the cell’s hideout apartment in the camp. Nine Paleostinians — including several members of the PIJ cell, other button men, and at least one uninvolved civilian — were killed, and another 20 were maimed in the festivities. The festivities on Thursday morning marked the deadliest Israeli operation in the West Bank in years.

[Dawn] A Chinese engineer was sentenced to eight years in a US prison on Wednesday for providing Beijing with information on possible recruitment targets.
Ji Chaoqun, who came to the US on a student visa in 2013 and later enlisted in the army reserves, was accused of identifying American scientists and engineers that could be recruited by the Jiangsu Province Ministry of State Security.
The body is a key Chinese intelligence unit involved in numerous schemes to illegally obtain US industrial and trade secrets.
Ji was arrested in September 2018 on charges that he had supplied Chinese intelligence with biographical information about eight people, all naturalised American citizens originally from China or Taiwan, and some of whom were US defence contractors.
Ji, about 31, was convicted in September of illegally acting as an agent of a foreign government and of making false statements after a two-week trial in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown ...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel... . The charge is often used by US prosecutors in espionage-related cases where the accused is not clearly a foreign intelligence agent.

THREE MONTHS AFTER ANNOUNCING A LARGE-SCALE AFGHAN REFUGEE INITIATIVE, GERMANY HAS YET TO RECEIVE PEOPLE – After making several public announcements about the new program in the Fall of 2022, German authorities were forced to admit that no Afghans had yet been processed under the new program. At the time of the announcement, Germany had successfully transported nearly 1,000 Afghan refugees a month but things have slowed to a crawl since October 2022. It is not clear when a resumption is expected.
GREAT BRITAIN ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO AFGHAN REFUGEE PROGRAM – Parliament announced a few changes to the UK immigration routes for Afghan nationals. UZBEKISTAN POWER EXPORTS HAVE YET TO RESUME – Several cities, including the capital, remain without power as another technical issue appears to have caused a delay in the resumption of electricity transmissions from Uzbekistan. Residents in Kabul expressed their outrage over the lack of current and have lost the means to communicate as cellular services have been affected as well.
JUST OVER A YEAR AFTER JAILS WERE EMPTIED, THE TALIBAN HAVE FILLED THEM BACK UP – Most of Afghanistan’s jails were emptied after the Taliban swept back into power in 2021. However, Taliban officials have been busy filling them back up in the intervening period. The Taliban claim to be holding 14,000 prisoners across its jail system and has said that nearly 30,000 were confined at one point in 2022. They say that most are not political prisoners and are being held for crimes punishable under Sharia law. Conditions in jails are a concern to human rights organizations. The suspension of aid is thought to have worsened the plight of many prisoners. ICRC and UNAMA do have periodic access to the facilities.
SEVERAL PROTESTS STAGED IN CITIES TO PROTEST BURNING OF QURAN IN SWEDEN – Several thousand people took part in the protests aimed at criticizing Sweden’s failure to act when a far-right Danish politician publicly burned the Muslim holy book outside of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. Demonstrations in Logar, Kunar, and Uruzgan provinces drew roughly 3,000 protestors to city centers. Sweden has come under fire from many in the international community for failing to ban the act.

THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING ON AFGHANISTAN TODAY – The meeting will include a briefing from several UN officials who have just returned from Afghanistan. The report is expected to be negative. Nichols, 29, was pulled over by police on Jan. 7 and died three days later from his injuries. He and all five officers are African-American.
"I join Tyre’s family in calling for peaceful protest. Outrage is understandable, but violence is never acceptable," Biden said in a written statement. "Violence is destructive and against the law. It has no place in peaceful protests seeking justice."
Biden added, "Public trust is the foundation of public safety and there are still too many places in America today where the bonds of trust are frayed or broken. Tyre’s death is a painful reminder that we must do more to ensure that our criminal justice system lives up to the promise of fair and impartial justice, equal treatment, and dignity for all."
The five fired cops were indicted Thursday on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.
Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith were fired last week for excessive use of force, failing to intervene and failing to render aid to Nichols, who had been pulled over for alleged reckless driving.
Body camera footage of the officers assailing Nichols is expected to be released Friday after 7 p.m. ET. Authorities said Nichols fled his vehicle before suffering his fatal injuries.
Large-scale protests and riots against police brutality have been less common during Biden’s administration than under former President Donald Trump ...Oh, noze! Not him!... , when the May 2020 murder of St. George Floyd ...the patron saint of Minneapolis, a sterling example for our children and indeed for us all. Last week, however, dozens of black-clad demonstrators rampaged through downtown Atlanta to protest the shooting death of Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, who was protesting construction of a new $90 million police training center known as Cop City, a pet project of Biden White House aide and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
Republicans criticized Biden while he was a presidential candidate for what they said was insufficiently forceful condemnation of violence after Floyd’s death as major cities experienced looting and widespread vandalism.
Left-wing Democrats, meanwhile, accused Biden of contributing to racial inequality by sponsoring laws in the 1980s and ’90s that caused the "mass incarceration" of minorities.
[Yahoo] An autopsy independently commissioned by the family of Tennessee man Tyre Nichols came to a preliminary determination about how the 29-year-old died after a traffic stop by Memphis Police earlier this month.
The findings indicate that Nichols "suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating," family attorney Benjamin Crump said in a Tuesday statement.
The father of one was stopped by police for reckless driving on Jan. 7 and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace fearing for his life, his family members have said.
A group of five officers caught up to Nichols and beat him for three minutes, according to lawyers for the family, who were given a chance to see body camera footage earlier this week.
According to Romanucci, the footage showed officers using pepper spray, a stun gun and restraint tactics on Nichols. He was taken to a hospital, but died three days later.
Lawyers for the family say that in some of Nichols’ final moments of consciousness, he called for his mother and said he just wanted to go home.
All five of the officers, who are also Black, were fired last week as local and federal authorities continue to investigate the incident and decide whether to pursue charges.

By tomorrow AM they will coordinate and push out talking points either calling him Clayton Bigsby or some take on the level of Africans not understanding the African American experience. General Sulub Ahmed will take over from Gen Abdi Hassan Hijar, who led the police for nearly 4 years. The appointment was made by the cabinet during the weekly meeting.
The new police commissioner was the deputy aviation minister before being named to the post. The move has been expected since the election of May 15 last year.
Somali president Hassan Sheikh is also set to appoint a military commander amidst a massive offensive to flush out al-Shabaab ...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all of which have enough problems without them... from the entire nation.

[RedState] If you didn’t think the recent unveiling of a new Martin Luther King Jr. statue was bad enough, New York City and artist Shahzia Sikander bring you a golden statue that looks like Medusa wearing a Ruth Bader Ginsburg-style collar and sporting multiple stringy reptilian arms and horns on its head.
The statue stands (wholly inappropriately) near likenesses of Moses, Confucius, and Zoroaster at the Beaux-Arts-style state court in the Flatiron District of Manhattan.
In short, it’s a monstrosity that does not belong in that pantheon of great thinkers and has no place on a courthouse.

Now the statue removal wave makes sense. There is plenty of new real estate for veneration of Harvey Milk. They can probably also buy some demonic nativity figures from the Vatican at hugely discounted prices. I expect there will be at least one statue unveiled that looks like a dude in drag. It is inevitable that there will also be one that features a fully naked man among a group of also naked smaller people that will not represent children because it is art.

[NYPOST] Former Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s entire legal team has asked a federal judge to withdraw from representing the city’s top prosecutor.
Attorney A. Scott Bolden, previously part of Mosby’s legal team, said that he is withdrawing from the case because of a contempt of court charge leveled against him during his work on the former prosecutor’s case, according to FOX 45.
The other attorneys haven’t yet explained why they are withdrawing from the case, but have asked for a public defender to be appointed.
Bolden said in the filing that he needs to focus on defending himself from the contempt of court charge after cursing while airing criticisms of the court and sharing confidential jury information.
"In order to do so, Mr. Bolden must, understandably, focus on his own interests, not the interests of his client, Ms. Mosby," the filing states. "The representation of Mr. Bolden (and the entire Reed Smith team) will be—and indeed already has been—materially limited as a result of Mr. Bolden’s justified personal interest in the outcome of his own prospective contempt proceeding before the Court."
"Ms. Mosby is entitled to effective counsel free from conflicts, and if that counsel requires time to prepare, such time must be provided, regardless of the Government’s interest in maintaining the current trial schedule, since any such is far outweighed by Ms. Mosby’s Sixth Amendment right to constitutionally-effective conflict free counsel," Bolden added in the filing.
Mosby was indicted in 2022 on federal charges of making false mortgage applications and perjury, which both relate to vacation home purchases in Florida.

Mosby allegedly certified that she met at least one qualification for distribution under the CARES Act and "affirm[ed] under penalties for perjury the statements and acknowledgments made in this request."
Mosby allegedly requested two one-time withdrawals of $40,000 and $50,000 out of her city retirement account, resulting in deposits of $36,000 and $45,000 into her bank account, and also allege that she used the money for down-payments on two separate vacation homes in Florida.
The former prosecutor didn’t face any adverse financial consequences from the coronavirus pandemic, as she received her full salary of $247,955.58 from Jan. 1, 2020 all the way through Dec. 29, 2020.
If convicted, Mosby could face up to five years in prison for the two counts of perjury and up to 30 years in prison for each of the two counts of making false mortgage applications.

To me this looks like an annoyance ploy. He is telling the judge to drop the contempt charge or delay the case indefinitely while she coordinates new representation. It would cost the client more in legal fees over the length of the case, but she gets to delay jail. With no other info about the charges, this indicates to me that she is guilty and there is evidence to back it up.

[Dawn] Three members of a Pak-American family were sentenced this week to prison terms ranging from five to 12 years, for their roles in keeping a woman from Pakistain in forced labour at their home for more than 12 years.
US federal authorities, who described the case as "modern-day slavery", said the victim had married into the family.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the US Justice Department said that Zahida Aman, 80, was sentenced to 12 years; Mohammed Rehan Chaudhri, 48, to 10 years; and Mohammad Nauman Chaudhri, 55, to five years in a federal prison in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Additionally, the court in Richmond, Virginia — where the defendants and the victim lived — ordered Aman and Rehan Chaudhri to pay the victim around $250,000 in restitution for back wages and other financial losses the victim incurred because of the defendants’ criminal conduct.
According to court documents, in 2002, the victim married Aman’s son, and the brother of defendants Nauman and Rehan Chaudhri. Thereafter, she lived in their home.
Over the next 12 years, the three defendants forced her to perform domestic services. To coerce that labour, the defendants verbally assaulted and physically abused the victim. The defendants slapped, kicked, and pushed the victim, even beat her with a wooden board, and, on one occasion, hog-tied her hands and feet and dragged her down the stairs in front of her children.
Even though the victim had temporary immigration status in the United States, Aman took her immigration documents. Thereafter, the defendants threatened the victim with deportation, should she not obey their demands.
The defendants also threatened to separate the victim from her children.
Following a seven-day trial in May 2022, the jury convicted all defendants of conspiracy to commit forced labour, convicted two of the defendants of forced labour, and convicted Aman of document servitude.

There is no bright side to it. Feinstein is old and out of it. Schifferbrains is young, energetic and ambitious. But on top of that he is totally unscrupulous...well, he's a Democrat. That's bad.
They'll vote for him in Los Angeles. If he can get Pelosi and Newsom to support him, they'll vote for him in the Bay Area too.

With the amount of graft available at the Senate level, there will likely be a host of challengers. California politics is sort of like Saruman’s orc spawning pool. Don’t discount the possibility that a more despicable candidate might emerge. Their district attorney farm system is top flight. Kamala Harris is a generational talent, but there are still some up and comers working on their craft at through that system. The mayoral pipeline is also robust.

Speaking to al-Jadeed TV, Zakka said al-Ouf traveled to carry out medical checkups in the United States and will return to Lebanon.
"He didn’t want to travel. He wanted to stay (in Lebanon) but he was pressured to go do his medical checkups," Zakka added, clarifying that the checkups were requested by the U.S. government seeing as this is the routine procedure for those freed from "arbitrary detention."
Asked about the travel ban issued by Oueidat, Zakka said he did not know about such an order and that al-Ouf "traveled normally" through Beirut’s airport.

Realistically, Ghassan should probably stay in the US as it sounds like he has an ironclad J6 alibi. J6 participation seems like it may be the only activity that you can engage in within the US that will land you in detention for an indeterminate period of time. The SDF Media Center announced in a statement that the operation, with air support from the US-led Global Coalition, resulted in the arrest of 68 ISIS “terrorists” among them “Atallah al-Maythan the Wali [governor] of the so-called Wilayah [province] al-Raqqa.”
The arrested “al-Maythan” led the ISIS sleeper cells affiliated with the “Khalid bin Al-Walid Battalion,” the statement noted.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has accused the Nigerian Air Force of killing its members in the Rukubi community of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
MACBAN President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma disclosed this in a statement sent to SaharaReporters on Thursday.
He said the herders, numbering about 40 were killed by operatives of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to him, they were killed while returning from Makurdi, the Benue State capital, where they went to retrieve over 1,000 cows seized by the Benue Livestock Guards.
He said that after the payment of fines amounting to N29 million, some of the livestock was released to the herders by the guards and they were sadly trailed and killed while offloading the cattle shortly after they reached their destination in Nasarawa State.
The statement read, "The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria — MACBAN condemns the Barbaric killing of 30 Pastoralists with unspecified number of livestock by a purported Bombing raid from unknown source on January 21st 2023 in Rukubi Community, Ikye Development Area, Doma Local Government Nasarawa State.
"Those killed had gone to Makurdi to retrieve about 1,250 of their cows impounded by the Benue Livestock guards after paying a fine of about 29 Million Naira for violating the "anti-open grazing law of Benue State".
"After paying, the pastoralist had hired vehicles from Makurdi to convey back their seized livestock to Rukubi, and it was in the process of offloading their livestock that an attack was conducted which killed 31 Pastoralists, 8 Hausa Butchers from Benue who have escorted the vehicles to upload the cows and four (4) others are now on admission in Lafia Hospital.
"His Excellency, the Deputy Governor Nasarawa State, Commissioner of Police, the Emirs of Lafia & Doma, the Doma LG Chairman and the State Chairman MACBAN were all in attendance during the Burial of the dear departed in Rukubi Community today.
"This is the third time we have experienced such happenings. In the last two happenings, it was clear that the Airforce is being involved in strafing livestock between the border of Benue & Nasarawa State within the last one year.
"But in the recent one, it is not clear whether it was a Bomb Blast, distant attack or an Airstrike as reported by our Nasarawa State Branch."
MACBAN describes the action as not only condemnable but a war crime under the Geneva convention that prohibits the wanton killing of livestock.
He said, "We call on the authorities to not only investigate this terror but to also punish the culprits and to be sure that incidents like this will not happen again.
"Information available to us shows that the perpetrators must have been informed about the release of the livestock from Benue Livestock Guards Custody to impose double jeopardy on pastoralists lives and their assets.
"We wonder how animals easily become culprits to deserve such barbaric action by a supposedly disciplined and well-trained outfit of the Federal Government. MACBAN demands an unreserved apology to the families of the victims and to Nigerians in General for this reckless and reprehensible act of barbarism.
"The Federal Government must also investigate this incident as a matter of urgency and put a stop to the involvement of Airforce in the pursuit and killing of livestock to appease the Benue state Government. Adequate compensation must also be paid to the relatives of the victims as a Matter of serious concern."

The irony is NATO "needed" Turkey in the USSR days, you know, to "fight Communism".

I have been advocating kicking the Turks out of NATO, off of Cyprus and moving whatever airplanes we 'need' in the area to the airfields the British built there. Turkey's territorial greed is somewhere between Franco's Spain (restrained) and Mussolini's Italy (well, shall we call it imperialistic?).

Erdogan has been said to have dreams/visions of another Ottoman Empire. His economy is in wretched shape, so I suppose it makes sense for him to align himself/Turkey with Washington's adversaries: China, Iran, and Russia.
I read/heard recently that during that coup attempt some years ago, Erdogan sought refuge in Iran. If so, then surely he'd be willing to repay the Iranians for their assistance that may have saved his life.

No civilians were harmed during the operation, senior US administration officials said.

While the White House was quick to take credit for the state of the nation’s economy, they might want to think twice. This latest report should have alarm bells ringing, not trumpets sounding.
That’s because economic growth is slowing down. Even the areas which contributed positively to gross domestic product (GDP) are not necessarily signs of prosperity. For example, business investment grew at only 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter, but that was almost entirely inventory growth. Nonresidential investment, a key driver of future economic growth, was up just 0.7 percent.
Meanwhile, residential investment fell off a cliff, dropping 26.7 percent as consumers were unable to afford the combination of high home prices, high interest rates and falling real incomes. No wonder homeownership affordability has fallen to the lowest level in that metric’s history.
But the growth in inventories, which accounted for half the GDP growth in the fourth quarter, is not a good sign, either. It is the result of businesses being unable to sell off existing inventories at current prices. Liquidating that inventory at discounts will mean lower profits, a further drag on future growth.

Another positive contributor to the GDP number was net exports, which is simply exports minus imports. But the gain here resulted from a slowdown in international trade — hardly a sign of wealth for Americans. Instead, imports are simply falling faster than exports, which shows up as an increase in GDP.
But perhaps most troubling is the precipitous drop in real disposable income, which fell over $1 trillion in 2022.
For context, this is the second-largest percentage drop in real disposable income ever, behind only 1932, the worst year of the Great Depression. To keep up with inflation, consumers are depleting their savings and burning through the "stimulus" checks they received during 2020 and 2021. Credit card debt continues growing, while savings plummeted $1.6 trillion last year, falling below 2009 levels.
As consumers continue depleting cash reserves and borrowing costs are rising, the growth in consumer spending will keep slowing. Since that accounts for roughly two-thirds of GDP, this doesn’t bode well for the economy.
Just how much pain is the consumer feeling? The average family has lost about $6,000 in annual purchasing power under Biden because prices have risen so much faster than wages. Higher interest rates have increased annual borrowing costs by $1,400, so that the average family effectively has $7,400 less in their annual budget.
But that’s just the average. Someone trying to buy a median priced home today will have a monthly mortgage payment that is 80 percent higher than when Biden took office. That means spending an extra $9,500 a year for the same house. It’s no wonder people are financially strapped and taking on second or third jobs in this economy.
Meanwhile, federal nondefense spending grew 11.2 percent in the fourth quarter, another example of politicians feeding the federal budget while starving the family budget.
