-Lurid Crime Tales-
The FTX-Belarus Connection: ZUBR.io
[Dirty Bubble Media] Several days ago, the Wall Street Journal published in-depth look at the relationship between Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) and a group of Kazakhstani businessmen. SBF invested over $1 billion into Genesis Digital Assets, a Cyprus-based Bitcoin mining firm with the majority of its operations based in Kazakhstan. As part of that investment, FTX paid $550 million for shares in the company in early 2022. Some 70% of that was paid to one Rashit Makhat, a Kazakhstani oligarch with close ties to the ruling regime. SBF even met with the president of Kazakhstan as part of a mission to sell the company on crypto.

It turns out that Genesis Digital Assets is not the only link Mr. Bankman-Fried and FTX established with well-connected oligarchs. Another example is the now-defunct crypto derivatives exchange ZUBR.io. In 2021, it was announced that FTX had purchased the Gibraltar-registered ZUBR exchange for $11 million. FTX subsequently used ZUBR as a vehicle to obtain a derivatives exchange license in Gibraltar.

Michigan man dead after pointing laser and opening fire at police helicopter
[NYP] Michigan State Police shot and killed a man who pointed a laser and fired a rifle at a police helicopter on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. when the helicopter circled north of downtown Detroit, according to police.

The 33-year-old man, whose name has not been released, had been staying in the abandoned home at the time of the shooting.

Two state troopers shot and killed the suspect, who recently moved into the home, according to a neighbor moments later.

In the video, the man emerged from the second-story window and pointed a green laser at the aircraft.

"We got somebody hitting us with a green laser on the rear of the house, upper window," the helicopter pilot said.
Fuel and oil pressure steady. We'll circle back and make one more low-level pass over the patio. When he comes out, he's yours.
Moments later, the man exited the house and aimed a "long gun" toward the hovering helicopter before opening fire.

"Now there’s somebody standing at the back door. Right now, they’re in the backyard," the pilot said. "He actually might, he might be armed. He almost looks like he’s holding a long gun pointed at us right now. Yeah, he’s shooting at us right now. He’s firing rounds. He’s got a long gun, extended magazine."

Police recovered five firearms at the abandoned home, including the one the suspect had used to fire on the aircraft.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli air attacks hit Gaza, escalation fears after Jenin raid
[Aljazeera] Israel has launched multiple air attacks on the blockaded Gaza Strip a day after Israeli forces killed nine Palestinians — including an elderly woman — in the Jenin refugee camp, marking one of the deadliest raids in the occupied West Bank by Israel’s military in years.

Local sources in Gaza told Al Jazeera that Israeli warplanes had hit al-Maghazi refugee camp in the centre of the territory, with at least 13 strikes in the early hours of Friday.

The al-Zaitoun neighbourhood in the south of Gaza City was also hit, as well as an open area east of Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza.

Witnesses and local media reported that Israeli drones fired two missiles at targets in Gaza before the fighter jets struck.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, and "cautious calm" had returned to Gaza by the morning, said Al Jazeera correspondent Maram Humaid.

The Israeli army said the air attacks on Gaza — one of the most densely populated areas in the world with 2.1 million residents — followed after two rockets were fired towards Israel at about midnight (22:00 GMT).

Air raid sirens had sounded in southern Israel as the initial two rockets were fired and then again after the Israeli air attacks.

The Israeli army said the rockets were intercepted by Israel’s air defence system and the country’s Channel 12 aired footage of Israeli interceptor missiles being launched into the night sky above the city of Ashkelon, about 12km (7 miles) north of Gaza.

No group has claimed responsibility for the reported rocket fire.

However, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said the armed groups in Gaza "will continue to carry out [their] duty to defend the Palestinian people and their sanctities, and will remain the people’s shield and sword".

A Russian graveyard reveals Wagner's prisoner army
[Reuters] Late last summer, a plot of land on the edge of a small farming community in southern Russia began to fill with scores of newly dug graves of fighters killed in Ukraine. The resting places were adorned with simple wooden crosses and brightly coloured wreaths that bore the insignia of Russia’s Wagner Group - a feared and secretive private army.

There were around 200 graves at the site on the outskirts of Bakinskaya village in Krasnodar region when Reuters visited in late January. The news agency matched the names of at least 39 of the dead here and at three other nearby cemeteries to Russian court records, publicly available databases and social media accounts. Reuters also spoke to family, friends and lawyers of some of the dead.

Many of the men buried at Bakinskaya were convicts who were recruited by Wagner last year after its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, promised a pardon if prisoners survived six months at the front, this reporting showed. They included a contract killer, murderers, career criminals and people with alcohol problems.

For months, Wagner has been locked in a bloody battle of attrition to take the towns of Bakhmut and Soledar in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. Western and Ukrainian officials have said it is using convicts as cannon fodder to overwhelm Ukraine’s defences. Toughening sanctions on Wagner this month, White House national security spokesman John Kirby branded the group "a criminal organisation that is committing widespread atrocities and human rights abuses." In a short open reply to the U.S. government, Prigozhin asked Kirby to "please clarify what crime was committed" by Wagner.

Britain
The Tan Hill Inn: The highest pub in Britain
[BBC] Located in a remote expanse of the Yorkshire Dales, the inn has weathered the elements for centuries but is now battling a new challenge: rising energy costs.

Cautiously reversing, an unhealthy grinding sound came from my vehicle as its four-wheel drive fought for traction. I was on sheer ice. The main roads and towns were blissfully clear, but turning off onto jagged moorland tracks for the final 30 minutes of my drive, the conditions worsened mile by mile. These are the joys of visiting Tan Hill Inn in December.

Tan Hill Inn is isolated in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales, a desolate expanse of moors, valleys and hills in northern England. When William the Conqueror's surveyors ventured here in 1085, they promptly left after jotting down a single word to describe the surrounding area's setting: "wasteland".

As the highest pub in Britain (located 1,732ft above sea level), the weathered, 17th-Century stone structure has long attracted locals and hardy wanderers, but its remote setting means visiting is not for the fainthearted. However, those who make the journey are rewarded with a cosy bar next to a roaring hearth, traditional British treats like giant Yorkshire puddings and guest rooms upstairs, should they choose to settle in for the night. With a whiteout on the horizon as I approached, as well as sheet ice underfoot and bleak moorland as far as I could see, some rural hospitality was much needed.

Excellent advert and video.

Gazans fire rockets at south as Israeli jets hit Strip in retaliatory strike
[IsraelTimes] Army says underground rocket workshop hit in central Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
in response to earlier attack; no injures or damage reported as missiles intercepted, fall short

Gazooks fired several rockets toward southern Israel and Israeli Air Force warplanes carried out sorties in the Gaza Strip early Friday as tit-for-tat fighting broke out amid sky-high tensions following a West Bank raid that left nine Paleostinian dead a day earlier.

At least three rockets were fired from Gaza at around 3:30 a.m. Friday, as Israeli jets bombed sites said to belong to the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", terror group in retaliation for a rocket attack hours earlier. One of the rockets was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system, another landed in an open field and a third fell short of the border, the army said, after alarms sounded in the towns Nir Oz, Ein Habesor and Magen. The Israel Defense Forces said it was also investigating after incoming sirens were activated near Kfar Aza, a kibbutz near the Gaza border.

The rocket attacks came as Israeli jets carried out a series of bombing raids in the central Gaza Strip in response to Gazook Death Eaters firing two rockets toward Ashkelon at midnight. Both projectiles were intercepted by Iron Dome.

The military said it targeted an underground facility where rockets are manufactured in the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza. It said the site was in an area surrounded by residential buildings and 180 meters (590 feet) from a storage facility maintained by UNRWA, the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
relief agency for Paleostinian refugees.

Footage released by the military showed the site being bombed from the air.

"The attack will lead to significant harm to Hamas efforts to build up its arms," the IDF said in a statement.

In response to the second round of rocket attacks, the IDF said fighter jets targeted "one of the most significant" Hamas military bases, in the northern Gaza Strip.

On Friday morning Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that he had ordered the military to "prepare for action with a range of offensive means aimed at quality targets, in case we need to continue — until quiet is restored for the citizens of Israel."

He also said that the terror groups in Gaza had suffered a "severe blow" overnight.

The military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, claimed that its fighters fired anti-aircraft weapons and ground-to-air missiles at the Israeli planes carrying out the attacks.

There were no reports of injuries on either side.

Footage published on social media showed several large explosions from the Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s in Gaza.

There was no claim of responsibility for the rocket launches against Israeli towns, which came after Israeli officials expressed concerns about potential retaliation, including in the form of rocket fire from Gaza, over the deaths of nine Paleostinians during an IDF raid against a Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
cell in the northern West Bank city of Jenin Thursday morning.

Both Islamic Jihad and Hamas threatened to hit back over the deaths.

Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from the Strip and generally responds to rocket fire with airstrikes against the group regardless of who launched the attack.

According to Israeli officials, the IDF had foiled a "ticking time bomb" in Jenin on Thursday after receiving "accurate intelligence" from the Shin Bet security agency about the cell’s hideout apartment in the camp. Nine Paleostinians — including several members of the PIJ cell, other button men, and at least one uninvolved civilian — were killed, and another 20 were maimed in the festivities. The festivities on Thursday morning marked the deadliest Israeli operation in the West Bank in years.

Separately on Thursday afternoon, a Paleostinian man was killed in festivities with Israeli troops in the town of a-Ram, north of Jerusalem, the PA Health Ministry said. And in Gaza, a 13-year-old boy died of wounds sustained in the last major round of fighting between Israel and Gaza, in August 2022.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran subjects Sunni clerics to detention, disappearances, beating to stifle protests
[Rudaw] Iranian authorities have stepped up detaining Sunni holy mans in the Kurdish areas following a strongly worded video statement by dozens of influential religious scholars labeling the execution of anti-government protesters as "un-Islamic" and calling on the authorities to end the "illegal" detention of thousands of peaceful protesters.

The Sunni holy manal establishment, mostly present in the Kurdish, Balochi, and Turkmen areas of Iran, has overwhelmingly supported the protest movement sparked by Zhina (Mahsa) Amini’s death in mid-September.

Despite the seemingly audacious moves by the Sunni holy mans in supporting the protests, authorities had until recently refrained from cracking down on them, while proceeding with violent mostly peaceful arrests of over 20,000 protesters.

China-Japan-Koreas
Chinese engineer gets eight-year sentence in US for spying
[Dawn] A Chinese engineer was sentenced to eight years in a US prison on Wednesday for providing Beijing with information on possible recruitment targets.

Ji Chaoqun, who came to the US on a student visa in 2013 and later enlisted in the army reserves, was accused of identifying American scientists and engineers that could be recruited by the Jiangsu Province Ministry of State Security.

The body is a key Chinese intelligence unit involved in numerous schemes to illegally obtain US industrial and trade secrets.

Ji was arrested in September 2018 on charges that he had supplied Chinese intelligence with biographical information about eight people, all naturalised American citizens originally from China or Taiwan, and some of whom were US defence contractors.

Ji, about 31, was convicted in September of illegally acting as an agent of a foreign government and of making false statements after a two-week trial in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
. The charge is often used by US prosecutors in espionage-related cases where the accused is not clearly a foreign intelligence agent.

According to the Justice Department, Ji acted at the direction of Xu Yanjun, a deputy division director in the Jiangsu unit.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief January 27, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • THREE MONTHS AFTER ANNOUNCING A LARGE-SCALE AFGHAN REFUGEE INITIATIVE, GERMANY HAS YET TO RECEIVE PEOPLE – After making several public announcements about the new program in the Fall of 2022, German authorities were forced to admit that no Afghans had yet been processed under the new program. At the time of the announcement, Germany had successfully transported nearly 1,000 Afghan refugees a month but things have slowed to a crawl since October 2022. It is not clear when a resumption is expected.

  • GREAT BRITAIN ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO AFGHAN REFUGEE PROGRAM – Parliament announced a few changes to the UK immigration routes for Afghan nationals. The changes have added special immigration provisions for Afghan civilians who the government had employed. Scroll down to the International News section to find the article and a link to the report.

  • UZBEKISTAN POWER EXPORTS HAVE YET TO RESUME – Several cities, including the capital, remain without power as another technical issue appears to have caused a delay in the resumption of electricity transmissions from Uzbekistan. Residents in Kabul expressed their outrage over the lack of current and have lost the means to communicate as cellular services have been affected as well.

  • JUST OVER A YEAR AFTER JAILS WERE EMPTIED, THE TALIBAN HAVE FILLED THEM BACK UP – Most of Afghanistan’s jails were emptied after the Taliban swept back into power in 2021. However, Taliban officials have been busy filling them back up in the intervening period. The Taliban claim to be holding 14,000 prisoners across its jail system and has said that nearly 30,000 were confined at one point in 2022. They say that most are not political prisoners and are being held for crimes punishable under Sharia law. Conditions in jails are a concern to human rights organizations. The suspension of aid is thought to have worsened the plight of many prisoners. ICRC and UNAMA do have periodic access to the facilities.

  • SEVERAL PROTESTS STAGED IN CITIES TO PROTEST BURNING OF QURAN IN SWEDEN – Several thousand people took part in the protests aimed at criticizing Sweden’s failure to act when a far-right Danish politician publicly burned the Muslim holy book outside of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. Demonstrations in Logar, Kunar, and Uruzgan provinces drew roughly 3,000 protestors to city centers. Sweden has come under fire from many in the international community for failing to ban the act.

NEXT 24 HOURS
THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING ON AFGHANISTAN TODAY – The meeting will include a briefing from several UN officials who have just returned from Afghanistan. The report is expected to be negative. While no resolutions are on the table, it is believed that a tougher line is being sought from many on the council with the Taliban and discussions may hint at additional steps to isolate the group.

Biden calls for ‘peaceful protest’ after Memphis cops arrested in Tyre Nichols death
Mr. Wife is in Memphis for the annual International Blues Competition held in the bars of the Beale Street entertainment district. He called yesterday evening to say he may be coming home today, depending on whether or not the announced protests become violent.
[NYPost] President Joe Biden
...... 46th president of the U.S. Being a self-defined foreign policy whiz kid means never having to say you're sorry......
asked for "peaceful protest" Thursday after five fired Memphis coppers were arrested and accused of beating to death Tyre Nichols.

Nichols, 29, was pulled over by police on Jan. 7 and died three days later from his injuries. He and all five officers are African-American.

"I join Tyre’s family in calling for peaceful protest. Outrage is understandable, but violence is never acceptable," Biden said in a written statement. "Violence is destructive and against the law. It has no place in peaceful protests seeking justice."

Biden added, "Public trust is the foundation of public safety and there are still too many places in America today where the bonds of trust are frayed or broken. Tyre’s death is a painful reminder that we must do more to ensure that our criminal justice system lives up to the promise of fair and impartial justice, equal treatment, and dignity for all."

The five fired cops were indicted Thursday on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith were fired last week for excessive use of force, failing to intervene and failing to render aid to Nichols, who had been pulled over for alleged reckless driving.

Body camera footage of the officers assailing Nichols is expected to be released Friday after 7 p.m. ET. Authorities said Nichols fled his vehicle before suffering his fatal injuries.

Large-scale protests and riots against police brutality have been less common during Biden’s administration than under former President Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
, when the May 2020 murder of St. George Floyd
...the patron saint of Minneapolis, a sterling example for our children and indeed for us all. St. George was martyed by the Devil's agents in blue while standing on a street corner preaching tolerance and racial justice or something like that...
by Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin sparked months of nationwide unrest.

Last week, however, dozens of black-clad demonstrators rampaged through downtown Atlanta to protest the shooting death of Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, who was protesting construction of a new $90 million police training center known as Cop City, a pet project of Biden White House aide and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Republicans criticized Biden while he was a presidential candidate for what they said was insufficiently forceful condemnation of violence after Floyd’s death as major cities experienced looting and widespread vandalism.

Left-wing Democrats, meanwhile, accused Biden of contributing to racial inequality by sponsoring laws in the 1980s and ’90s that caused the "mass incarceration" of minorities.

Independent Autopsy Reveals Tyre Nichols' Cause Of Death After Police Traffic Stop

[Yahoo] An autopsy independently commissioned by the family of Tennessee man Tyre Nichols came to a preliminary determination about how the 29-year-old died after a traffic stop by Memphis Police earlier this month.

The findings indicate that Nichols "suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating," family attorney Benjamin Crump said in a Tuesday statement.

The father of one was stopped by police for reckless driving on Jan. 7 and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace fearing for his life, his family members have said.

A group of five officers caught up to Nichols and beat him for three minutes, according to lawyers for the family, who were given a chance to see body camera footage earlier this week.

According to Romanucci, the footage showed officers using pepper spray, a stun gun and restraint tactics on Nichols. He was taken to a hospital, but died three days later.

Lawyers for the family say that in some of Nichols’ final moments of consciousness, he called for his mother and said he just wanted to go home.

All five of the officers, who are also Black, were fired last week as local and federal authorities continue to investigate the incident and decide whether to pursue charges.

Nichols had a 4-year-old son and worked at a Memphis-area FedEx facility, The New York Times

I just spoke with him, Whiskey Mike. Everything is calm there now, but of course it would be. He is aware of the usual Antifa/BLM pattern of calm protests during the day followed by “activists” rioting after dark... and he’s experienced riots before — it’s been a while, but his colleagues in Chile thought it would amuse him to see the anti-Pinochet protests when he was on a business trip to the group in Santiago.

He also observed that the Blues competition has half the number of bands and half the attendance than there used to be before Covid, which at least means he and his comrades can get in and find seats for all the performances — less ambiance, perhaps, but more comfort. I’ll report back if he sees anything more interesting this evening.

African Reporter Goes All Emperor's-New-Clothes on Karine Jean-Pierre: ‘You Don't Seem a Good Fit for This Job'
[PJ] The whole world knows that Karine Jean-Pierre is unfit to be White House press secretary; any doubters can consult the evidence of every day’s press briefing for fresh evidence. KJP has become notorious for giving answers that have nothing to do with the questions she is supposed to be answering, relying over-heavily upon the canned answers provided in her briefing book, and ignoring reporters who are liable to ask inconvenient questions. But for the same reasons that she got the job in the first place, the establishment media has been reluctant to call her out and state the obvious: that a random person off the street would likely do a better job than she does. On Tuesday, however, Karine Jean-Pierre finally had her Emperor’s-New-Clothes moment: Cameroonian reporter Simon Ateba told her during a White House press briefing, "You don’t seem a good fit for this job."

Somalia police gets new chief
[ShabelleMedia] The cabinet has appointed a new commander of the police force as Somalia is reforming its security and military sectors before taking over the AU troops.
This sounds more like a gendarmerie than regular police, if I am reading it correctly.
General Sulub Ahmed will take over from Gen Abdi Hassan Hijar, who led the police for nearly 4 years. The appointment was made by the cabinet during the weekly meeting.

The new police commissioner was the deputy aviation minister before being named to the post. The move has been expected since the election of May 15 last year.

Somali president Hassan Sheikh is also set to appoint a military commander amidst a massive offensive to flush out al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all of which have enough problems without them...

'Satanic' Statue Celebrating Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Abortion Placed Atop NYC Courthouse
[RedState] If you didn’t think the recent unveiling of a new Martin Luther King Jr. statue was bad enough, New York City and artist Shahzia Sikander bring you a golden statue that looks like Medusa wearing a Ruth Bader Ginsburg-style collar and sporting multiple stringy reptilian arms and horns on its head.

The statue stands (wholly inappropriately) near likenesses of Moses, Confucius, and Zoroaster at the Beaux-Arts-style state court in the Flatiron District of Manhattan.

In short, it’s a monstrosity that does not belong in that pantheon of great thinkers and has no place on a courthouse.

Racist Michigan School Board Member Takes Flak for Saying White People Are More Dangerous than Animals
[RedState] Parents at a Michigan school board meeting confronted a school board member for making incendiary — and racist — comments about white people in a series of tweets in December. Many demanded her resignation, but the school board member took the opportunity to double down on her remarks.

In December, Kesha Hamilton, a member of the Jackson school board, tweeted:

Whiteness is so evil. it manipulates then says, I won’t apologize for my dishonesty and trauma-inducing practices and thinks you should applaud it for being honest about its ability to manipulate and be dishonest.

In another tweet, in response to a user who tweeted about being a black man hiking in the woods, she wrote: "The last thing you have to worry about is an animal — though that could be a very real threat.. more dangerous are any whites you may see on the trail.. be safe!"

During the meeting, parents called Hamilton out for her racist tweets. One asked how all kids can "feel safe when physical characteristics over which they have no control are being called evil and dangerous."

Another noted that Hamilton was "not addressing the disparities," but "adding to them by your hurtful remarks."

Hamilton responded by justifying her comments and playing the victim. "What I understand from being a woman in this American nation, and a Black woman specifically, is that sometimes others would rather I not exercise any of my rights as outlined in the Constitution. I do not apologize for exercising any of my rights," she said.

Starfish are pretty dangerous, if you are a clam.

In fact, it is difficult to think of an animal which causes trouble for the sake of causing trouble. Dolphins? More dangerous than dolphins?

How about more dangerous than viruses. Why that's even topical with our recent virus of specified origin. Wait, that isn't White People. Nevermind.

Maybe, Ms. Hamilton, just maybe, you have gone through life as a woman, and Black, and people led you to not be vocal not because of those traits, but because you are a fucking idiot.

Busted Pfizer R&D Exec Claims He Lied About About 'Mutating COVID' To 'Impress A Date Like Normal People'
Our own Anomalous Sources ran this yesterday as a comment. Nothing gets by the Burg, nothing !
[ZeroHedge] Update (1750ET): Project Veritas' James O'Keefe was physically assaulted after approaching Jordon Trishton Walker, Pfizer's Director of R&D, Strategic Operations, who had been caught on tape admitting to the fact that the company is exploring a way to "mutate" COVID via "Directed Evolution" in order to anticipate new strains for their Covid-19 vaccine.

When O'Keefe first approached him about his admission, Walker erupted in denial, exclaiming that "I was just lying to a person to impress them on a date." He then lunged for O'Keefe and his staff in what appeared to be an effort to take away the iPad that O'Keefe was holding.

The situation escalated when Walker urged the restaurant owner to call the police, but the restaurant owner asked O'Keefe to leave... which left Walker pressuring him to stay until the police arrived.

As Walker raged around the empty restaurant, he once again claimed: "I was on a third date with a man and like normal people you lie to impress a date..."
I don’t know about anyone else, but for me lying is a deal breaker. If you believe you need to lie to me to be impressive, you just took yourself out of the running.

'We are even glad:' what is known about the Abrams inherited by Ukraine
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Sergey Adamov

[REGNUM] Joe Biden has officially confirmed that the first batch of heavy American Abrams tanks will go to Ukraine. They are accompanied by specialized armored vehicles for repair and evacuation. And this is no accident: it seems that those "Abrams" that are handed over to Kyiv are very heavy, clumsy and quite vulnerable. The qualities of these machines, which the Saudis had previously inherited, can be judged from the experience of the campaign in Yemen - and it was not brilliant.

The White House officially approved the delivery of the first batch of American-made heavy armored vehicles to Ukraine. This was announced during an official video message by US President Joe Biden . He announced the transfer to Kyiv of 31 Abrams tanks and eight armored recovery vehicles (BREM) M88A2 - they are designed for maintenance of tanks and evacuation of damaged vehicles.

Biden's statement was made after several European countries agreed to send batches of German-made Leopard 2 tanks and British Challenger tanks to Ukraine.

The US President stressed that the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, recommended supplying tanks to Kiev, who believes that these combat vehicles will increase "Ukraine's ability to defend its territory and achieve strategic goals."

Officials of NATO and the US administration do not hide the fact that the transfer of new equipment to Kiev is intended to prepare a new offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Biden explicitly pointed out that Crimea should be the target for the advancement of Ukrainian troops. “We want to make sure that they (Ukrainian authorities) have the right capacity not only to defend against Russia, but also the ability to take back sovereign territory. Crimea is Ukraine , ” RIA Novosti quoted Biden as saying .

But much makes one doubt that the supply of Western equipment will have a serious impact on the course of hostilities in the NVO zone.

According to the CNBC TV channel, tanks in the M1A1 variant will be handed over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. A specific modification is not called, but it is possible that we are talking about M1A1 FEP vehicles, which were previously in service with tank formations of the US Marine Corps (MCC). Until recently, the warehouses of the KMP had more than 450 tanks of this model, as well as 80 M88A1 recovery vehicles. In July 2020, the US Army underwent a reform, after which these vehicles were decommissioned.

Experts believe that these stocks will be used for deliveries to Ukraine, since the US Army no longer needs this equipment. The M1A1 FEP modification is seriously inferior not only to the vehicles in service with the American army, but also to those models that are exported to Saudi Arabia and other countries that can pay for the supplies. But even they showed themselves in the course of real hostilities from far from the best side.

During the hostilities in Yemen, the Houthi rebel forces destroyed at least 20 M1A2S Abrams tanks. By the way, several dozens of M88A1 BREMs were also shot down there - the same ones that had already been promised by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Hussites used outdated Soviet-made anti-tank systems to destroy tanks. The high level of losses of armored vehicles forced the United States to demand that the Saudis withdraw tanks from the front so as not to cast a shadow on the products of the American military-industrial complex.

It is most likely that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive outdated modifications of the Abrams tanks, which by themselves will not change the situation at the front, a military expert, an officer of the tank forces of the reserve Alexander Mikhailovsky, also believes.

"The only effective means of protecting armored vehicles with anti-tank systems are active protection systems - KAZ. A couple of years ago, the Israeli KAZ Trophy was tested on Abrams tanks in the US Army. The tests just started after a mass of Saudi tanks were knocked out with the help of Fagot, Konkurs anti-tank missiles, and so on," said a military expert in an interview with REGNUM.

"But these complexes are installed only on tanks for the US Army of the M1A2 SEPv2 modification," Mikhailovsky explained.

"In the case of the modification of the M1A1, which are transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there is no need to talk about anything like that. Simply because the States will never want their advanced developments to fall into the wrong hands. So Kyiv will not receive anything fundamentally new."

"The main "weak point" of these machines is the lack of protection against manual anti-tank weapons, with which the Ukrainian theater of operations is simply oversaturated," the expert noted.
The main weak point is going to be the crew, I would argue.
Perhaps it is the unwillingness to put their products under attack due to the fact that the US Army is in no hurry to make deliveries in practice. According to President Biden, the training and coordination of the crews should take many months before the machines are ready to be sent to the front.

Another problem that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will inevitably face when operating vehicles delivered from the United States is logistical difficulties. An informed source of the REGNUM news agency in the ranks of the defenders of the DPR drew attention to this .

"They will still have problems with logistics and maintenance, and the tank, although formidable, is a very delicate machine. Dozens of people have to work before the crew gets into the Abrams and fires even one shot. And we will look at all this - through the sight of the gun. And then two or three ATGMs will fly away in that direction, and this Abrams or Leopard will burn for a sweet soul," the source notes.

Among the problems of American tanks, experts also name severity: more than 60 tons versus 45 tons for tanks of the Soviet and Russian "schools". It is this fact that may have become the reason why the United States is providing Ukraine with recovery vehicles.
The Abrams comes in at 70 tons. The T-72B3 et seq are 48 tons soaking wet.
We’ve seen some videos of soaking wet tanks — it doesn’t look like a good thing...
“In general, the M88A1 armored recovery vehicles are simply part of the US Army tank battalion according to the state. So it was in Iraq, so it was with the Saudis in Yemen. The reason is simple. These are very heavy cars. The slightest damage - and they must be taken in tow, taken to the rear," said Mikhailovsky, an officer of the tank forces of the reserve.

"American armored vehicles, such as the M113 infantry fighting vehicle, react very poorly to muddy roads, as experience shows," says Mikhailovsky.

"And if in warm weather dirt interferes, then with a cold snap, clods of earth that clogged into the tracks simply immobilize the car. How a sixty-ton machine will behave in these conditions, and even with a crew and ammunition on board, is a big question. By the way, it was the M88A1 BREM in the same Yemen and Iraq that often became prey for ATGM operators, because it is practically not protected, and a lot of them are required to service American equipment.

Experts agree that NATO-made equipment is ill-suited for use in the Ukrainian conflict. However, it seems that the West is forced to go even to reputational losses in order to provide assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The reason why the United States and its allies decided to supply their equipment is the high losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Soviet-made tanks. According to the service Lostarmour, which analyzes photos and videos taken in the war zone, since February 24, 2022, Ukrainian troops have lost at least 265 tanks.

By the way, as a REGNUM source in our troops, who is familiar with the mood of the Russian military, notes, the fact of deliveries of NATO armored vehicles not only does not upset them, but even causes restrained optimism.

"Now we are even glad that Western tanks are being supplied," the interlocutor emphasized.

"This means that during the time of the NMD we knocked out all the delivered tanks. And this means that now they simply do not have the opportunity to supply Soviet tanks. That's what we rejoice in. So effective was our work to destroy the tank units of Ukraine. We've run out of stock. They have nothing to send, and now they are talking about picking up at least something for Ukraine."

'Even if it costs me my life': Bitar wants justice before blast anniversary
... which it might very well.

[An Nahar] Lead investigator into the Beirut port blast Judge Tarek Bitar has told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that he will go on with the investigation, "even if it is going to cost me my life" and hopes that there will be an indictment ahead of the third anniversary of the blast this coming August.

"I have nothing against Judge Oueidat but there are some suspicions that came up. He should come and defend himself," Bitar said. "I will continue with the case and I will not leave it unless they remove me completely."

"Everyone that I summon has to come because the blood of the victims is above everything," the judge added.

Lebanese judge Tarek Bitar crossed all red lines and openly challenged an entrenched ruling elite, as he decided to resume his investigation after a slew of lawsuits, mostly from politicians charged in the case, forced him to stop work for 13 months.

On Wednesday, he refused to step down
...Hell no! The money's too good!...

Abdel Massih: Justice minister's bodyguards assaulted MPs

[An Nahar] Chaos ensued Thursday inside the Justice Palace, after over a dozen politicians from reformist and traditional opposition parties met with caretaker Justice Minister Henri Khoury.

The heated meeting about the recent developments in the Beirut port probe led to scuffles with the minister’s guards who allegedly tried to snatch their phones as they filmed the meeting. Some of them say they were attacked, and have called for Khoury to resign.

"These aren’t guards, these are the dogs of the justice minister," opposition parliamentarian Adib Abdelmassih told the press after leaving the Justice Palace. "We were talking about the law in a civilized way and the parliamentarians were giving their opinions on the matter."

Abdel Massih called on the caretaker minister Henry Khoury to resign, after the incident, saying that the bodyguards of the justice minister assaulted the politicians.

MPs Waddah al-Sadek, Melhem Khalaf and others were asking the minister to act, after the latest judicial turmoil.

The bodyguards pushed the politicians and tried to take their mobile phones, Abdel Masih said.

"We raised our voice, calling on the minister to take an administrative decision regarding the deep rift in the judiciary. The minister raised his voice back and his guards attacked us and beat us," Abdel Massih said.

Founder of investment firm, 46, plunges to his death from NYC rooftop bar
[NYPOST] The founder of an investment firm plunged to his death from a Manhattan rooftop bar on Wednesday night, cops and law enforcement sources said.

Dale L. Cheney, 46, man plummeted from Bar 54 at the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York in front of at least two witnesses around 6:30 p.m., police and the sources said.

He landed on the street below and was pronounced dead on scene, cops said.

Two people at the rooftop bar told police that the man jumped off the building, sources said. One woman called 911, saying she heard a loud noise.

The death is being investigated as a suspected suicide, an NYPD spokesperson said
I blame gravity
Law enforcement sources told The Post that police were called to his home twice in 2008 over domestic disputes with his wife. One of the arguments was over finances.

Court records show that the couple had filed for divorce on Tuesday.

Sources said the man was a founder and partner at a Connecticut-based investment company.

Nine Palestinians, including elderly woman, dead in Israel West Bank raid
[An Nahar] An Israeli raid on the occupied West Bank's Jenin refugee camp Thursday killed nine Paleostinians including an elderly woman, Paleostinian officials said, also accusing the forces of using tear gas inside a hospital children's ward.

The corpse count rose to "nine deaders including an elderly woman," the health ministry said, with multiple maimed.

In a separate statement, Paleostinian health minister Mai al-Kaila charged that "occupation forces stormed Jenin Government Hospital and intentionally fired tear gas canisters at the pediatric department in the hospital".

She described the situation in the refugee camp as "critical" and said Israeli forces were preventing ambulances from reaching the maimed.

Israel's army declined to comment when asked by AFP about the health minister's tear gas allegation.

The military has said only that its "forces are operating in Jenin".

Thursday's fatalities bring the number of Paleostinians killed in the West Bank so far this year to 29, including fighters and civilians, most of whom were shot by Israeli forces.

Jenin deputy governor Kamal Abu al-Rub told AFP that residents were living in a "real state of war".

"The Israeli army is destroying everything and shooting at everything that moves," he told AFP.

The mounting toll follows the deadliest year in the Paleostinian territory since United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
records began in 2005.

Holocaust (un)awareness surveys: America and Holland
Forgetting history as more recent terrible events demand attention.
Nearly a quarter of young adults in Netherlands think Holocaust a myth, survey finds

[IsraelTimes] ‘Disturbing lack of awareness’: Poll says over half of Dutch don’t know Holocaust took place in their country or that 6 million Jews died

A Jewish group that commissioned a survey on Holocaust awareness in the Netherlands said Wednesday that the results showed “a disturbing lack of awareness of key historical facts about the Holocaust,” prompting calls for better education in the nation that was home to diarist Anne Frank and her family.

The survey commissioned by the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany found that the number of respondents who believe the Holocaust is a myth was higher than in any of the other five nations previously surveyed.

In the survey, 23% of adults under age 40 and 12% of all respondents indicated they believed the Holocaust was a myth or that the number of Jews killed had been greatly exaggerated.

“Not only is this downright shocking, it’s very serious,” Dutch Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius said on Twitter. “Almost a quarter of the Dutch people born after 1980 think that the Holocaust is a ‘myth’ or that it is heavily ‘exaggerated.’ As a society, we have a lot of work to do. And fast, too.”

The survey also found that 54% of all respondents — and 59% of those under age 40 — do not know that 6 million Jews were murdered. Some 29 percent believe that the figure is 2 million or fewer.
And so forth.

Most Americans lack some basic knowledge about Holocaust — poll

[IsraelTimes] AJC survey finds just 53% know 6 million Jews were killed, and more than one in three think Hitler came to power in a violent coup, highlighting gaps in Shoah education

Just over half of American adults are familiar with the number of Jews killed during the Holocaust, and even fewer know that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler came to power democratically, according to a survey on the state of Holocaust education released Tuesday.

The poll of 1,004 American adults, published by the American Jewish Committee days ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, found that only one in four — twenty-six percent — could correctly answer four basic questions about the Shoah. Thirty percent of respondents answered three questions correctly and another quarter knew two.

While 85% identified Auschwitz as a death camp and 76% were able to place the Holocaust between 1930 and 1950, just 53% knew that 6 million Jews were killed. Another 20% said they did not know how many, while 13% said fewer than 3 million and 11% said over 12 million.

Thirty-nine percent of respondents knew how Hitler came to power, but almost as many (34%) thought he took over Germany via a violent coup.

According to the AJC, the results demonstrated a strong link between general education level and knowledge about the Holocaust, with those with a college or high school degree answering all four questions correctly at a higher rate than those without.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Ex-Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's entire legal team withdrawing from case
[NYPOST] Former Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s entire legal team has asked a federal judge to withdraw from representing the city’s top prosecutor.

Attorney A. Scott Bolden, previously part of Mosby’s legal team, said that he is withdrawing from the case because of a contempt of court charge leveled against him during his work on the former prosecutor’s case, according to FOX 45.

The other attorneys haven’t yet explained why they are withdrawing from the case, but have asked for a public defender to be appointed.

Bolden said in the filing that he needs to focus on defending himself from the contempt of court charge after cursing while airing criticisms of the court and sharing confidential jury information.

"In order to do so, Mr. Bolden must, understandably, focus on his own interests, not the interests of his client, Ms. Mosby," the filing states. "The representation of Mr. Bolden (and the entire Reed Smith team) will be—and indeed already has been—materially limited as a result of Mr. Bolden’s justified personal interest in the outcome of his own prospective contempt proceeding before the Court."

"Ms. Mosby is entitled to effective counsel free from conflicts, and if that counsel requires time to prepare, such time must be provided, regardless of the Government’s interest in maintaining the current trial schedule, since any such is far outweighed by Ms. Mosby’s Sixth Amendment right to constitutionally-effective conflict free counsel," Bolden added in the filing.

Mosby was indicted in 2022 on federal charges of making false mortgage applications and perjury, which both relate to vacation home purchases in Florida.

She has pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
to all charges.

Marilyn Mosby other attorneys haven't explained why they are withdrawing from the case yet.

Court documents state that Mosby allegedly lied while citing coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
hardship as a reason to make withdraws from her city retirement account. Mosby allegedly certified that she met at least one qualification for distribution under the CARES Act and "affirm[ed] under penalties for perjury the statements and acknowledgments made in this request."

Mosby allegedly requested two one-time withdrawals of $40,000 and $50,000 out of her city retirement account, resulting in deposits of $36,000 and $45,000 into her bank account, and also allege that she used the money for down-payments on two separate vacation homes in Florida.

The former prosecutor didn’t face any adverse financial consequences from the coronavirus pandemic, as she received her full salary of $247,955.58 from Jan. 1, 2020 all the way through Dec. 29, 2020.

If convicted, Mosby could face up to five years in prison for the two counts of perjury and up to 30 years in prison for each of the two counts of making false mortgage applications.

#1  To me this looks like an annoyance ploy. He is telling the judge to drop the contempt charge or delay the case indefinitely while she coordinates new representation. It would cost the client more in legal fees over the length of the case, but she gets to delay jail. NYC bike path terrorist Sayfullo Saipov convicted on all counts in deadly 2017 attack
[NYPOST] The ISIS-inspired terrorist who killed eight people by ramming into them with a truck on a West Side Highway bike path in 2017 was convicted on all counts by a Manhattan federal jury Thursday.

The panel’s conviction of Sayfullo Saipov,
...the Uzbeck lone wolf from Paterson, NJ, where he lived next to the Omar Mosque. He rented a truck for the purpose of running over as many people as possible while screaming “Allahu akhbar,” though he only managed to kill eight for ISIS and wound 12 more despite also crashing into a school bus. He came to the U.S. under President George HW Bush’s Diversity Immigrant Visa program in 2010, one of millions of Uzbeks to take advantage of the offer...
34, on 28 counts paves the way for the death penalty
phase of the trial to begin — when jurors will decide whether he should be put to death for the murderous rampage.

The panel of three women and nine men deliberated for about six hours before returning the verdict to Judge Vernon Broderick.
An easy one, unexpectedly.
The death penalty phase of the trial is tentatively scheduled to begin on Feb. 6.

Saipov, an immigrant originally from Uzbekistan, did not show emotion as Broderick’s courtroom deputy read the verdict aloud.

The terrorist, sporting a long, black beard and wearing a black suit, sat at the far end of the defense table, listening to a translation of the verdict that was beamed into headphones he was wearing.

Over the course of the two-week trial, victims who survived the attack described the horrific and violent mostly peaceful scene after Saipov, driving a rented flatbed truck, plowed into as many people as he could in Lower Manhattan on the afternoon of Halloween that year.

Family members described from the witness stand how they watched as loved ones struck by the madman were left bloodied on the bike path and ultimately died from their injuries.

One victim who was killed, Ann-Laure Decadt, had been riding a rented bike with family members who traveled from their native Belgium for a New York vacation to celebrate a number of milestone birthdays.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Europe is trying to erase the memory of the Soviet liberators
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets

Hard to argue his point. NATO and the US have been ignoring/disregarding the Soviets' role in the liberation of Europe in WWII for four generations now. Now they want to erase it altogether, at least officially.

The problem is that while the Soviets definitely shared in the liberation of Europe as far as Berlin from the Nazis, they then treated those nations as conquered until the Berlin Wall fell in late 1989. While uninviting the Russians from this anniversary commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz is an inappropriate cut direct, it seems to me, one can understand why the nations of Central and Eastern Europe deeply resent their Russia parading itself as their liberator.
The director of the Auschwitz Museum in Poland, Piotr Cywinski, said that the Russian Federation was excluded from the countries participating in the ceremony dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops, which will be held on January 27.

Nothing surprising. And German tanks with crosses will again go to fight against the Russians. History repeats itself.

At such a pace, in two years, the Europeans will begin to print historical documents that the Soviet troops were not at all involved in the liberation. If you do not clear their brains of Russophobia, then in 10 years it will turn out that the camp was completely liberated from us.

Or, as another option, the "civilized" West will condemn the Soviet aggressive invasion of Auschwitz and the destruction of the rules-based world order created by the Europeans there.

But George Orwell in his novel "1984" described all this back in 1928: rewriting history, wars... The so-called "civilized" West acts exactly as described in George Orwell's novel.
Motes and beams, Mr. Chervonets. This is so ironic, considering that the meme of erasing unwanted people is that old photo series of Stalin with a decreasing number of colleagues.

Police in Spain raid home of suspect in church machete attacks
More on this story from yesterday.
[An Nahar] Police in Spain on Thursday raided the home of a man who is suspected of carrying out machete attacks at two churches that left one person dead and a priest seriously injured.

Officers searched the as-yet unnamed suspect's home to "determine the nature, terrorist or otherwise," of the Wednesday night attacks in the city of Algeciras, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said.

The detained man had no prior criminal record, and Sherlocks do not think anyone else was involved, Grande-Marlaska said. The Interior Ministry said the suspect was still being questioned, and had been under a deportation order since June last year.

The twin attacks by a single assailant have shaken the city, located near the southern tip of Spain across from a bay from Gibraltar. Witnesses said that during the second attack, a machete-wielding man jumped on the altar of a church before chasing a victim into a city square and inflicting mortal wounds.

The Interior Ministry said the man killed in the attack was a sacristan, an individual who prepares Mass, at the Church of Nuestra Señora de La Palma, while a priest was maimed earlier at the Gay Paree of San Isidro church.

Algeciras is a multicultural port city and the first point of arrival for many boats from North Africa, putting it at the center of Spanish debates on irregular migration. The violent mostly peaceful acts at the churches may inflame social tensions stoked by the far right in an election year, which is vying to win more local and national offices, as well as to form governing coalitions with the center-right Popular Party.

Algeciras town hall said the slain sacristan was named Diego Valencia, and it identified the maimed priest as Antonio Rodríguez.

The parish priest for Nuestra Señora de La Palma, the Rev. Juan José Marina, told Spanish media he thinks he was the attacker's intended target.

"In the same way that he sought out the priest at San Isidro and no one else, the same thing happened here," Marina said. "If I had been here, I would be dead."

A fellow sacristan who served with Valencia at the church, Manolo González, recounted the events of his colleague's slaying. The attacker climbed on the altar, he said, and Valencia came out "and asked to know what was going on."

A man wielding a machete then confronted Valencia, who fled outside to a public square. The attacker pursued him and then inflicted mortal wounds, González said.

The Islamic Commission of Spain, a body that represents Moslems in the country, condemned an "abominable, murderous and heartless act" that took place in "a sacred space for our Catholic brothers in Algeciras."

Candles and flowers adorned the two small churches with whitewashed walls on Thursday, as residents nervously passed police vans waiting in the street. Flags were flown at half-staff in Algeciras, and a minute's silence was to be held later in the day.
Breitbart has his name and nation:
Several churchmen and bystanders were stabbed or slashed in a series of attacks, allegedly by a Moroccan male, in two different churches in Algeciras, Spain, on Wednesday night, leaving one dead and others seriously injured.

Two churches were the targets of what is thought to be a possible Islamist terror attack in Southern Spain on Wednesday evening. Several clergymen were attacked with what was described as a "sword" or "machete", including sacristan Diego Valencia who was reported to have been killed.

Several others were maimed, some seriously, including a priest. The alleged attacker, named as 25-year-old Moroccan citizen Yasine Kanjaa by major Spanish newspaper El Pais was arrested shortly after the attack.

According to reports, the alleged attacker had an argument with his neighbour at a squat where he lived about Islam before punching him in the face and leaving. Later, the same man is alleged to have engaged churchgoers in conversation about religion, telling them they should become Moslems. Later again, before half past seven in the evening (1230 EST) the man returned with a weapon and started attacking religious icons in a church, El Pais reports.

When the man was told to leave he is said to have attacked the church’s priest, stabbing him in the neck and shoulder.

The attack continued at another church nearby, where a service was underway. Again the knifeman was said to have attacked religious idols — idolatry is forbidden in Islam — before chasing sacristan Valencia down the street. Valencia was killed outside the town hall with blows to the head from the alleged weapon. Photographs from the scene show a body covered with a blanket in the town square.

Some of those injured are said to have attempted to prevent the killing. Specialist counterterror police are running the investigation into the killing, and reports are calling the slaying a "possible Islamist terror attack".

Africa North
France on the way out
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin:

[ColonelCassad] After demands from Burkina Faso to remove French troops from the country, France withdrew its ambassador from Burkina Faso. In neighboring Niger, work has already begun to prepare for the deployment of a special forces battalion, which is currently stationed in Burkina Faso, but should be withdrawn in the short term. It is assumed that its place in this country (together with the bases) will be taken by the Wagner PMC.

France is also allocating additional funds to strengthen its positions in Niger, fearing that a military coup may occur here (as happened in Mali and Burkina Faso) and France will be asked to leave from here as well. A number of French sources note that the recognition of the Wagner PMC as a "transnational criminal organization" is connected, among other things, with Macron's complaints to Biden, where the French actually signed that they could not do anything with the Russian strategy in northwestern Africa, where the PMC " Wagner" acts as one of the instruments of Russian politics.

It is noteworthy, but even in the concept of the development of the French armed forces until 2030, the situation is already prescribed when the military presence of France in Africa will be reduced, which transparently hints at the fact that Paris is aware of the simple fact that to restore the former neo-colonial empire, which was destroyed not without the help of Russia for the last few years, France will no longer succeed (although the remaining dependent countries like Niger or Senegal will hold on to the last). In fact, it can already be stated that under Macron, France has lost its neo-colonial empire in Africa.

Arabia
23 abducted Yemeni fishermen finally released by Saudi-led forces
by Emad Almarshahi

[HODHODYEMENNEWS] On Thursday, a group of 23 Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
i fishermen who were detained by the Saudi-led coalition forces for five days, arrived at the fishing port of Hodeidah city. The Director General of the Ports and Landing Center, Aziz al-Atini, and the Deputy Director-General of the General Authority for Fisheries, Muhammad al-Omeisy, stated that 23 fishermen were detained while their boat and fishing equipment were confiscated.
along with Iranian arms they were smuggling?
Al-Atini and al-Omeisy renewed their condemnation and denunciation of the repeated violations and criminal practices carried out by the US-Saudi coalition’s aggression and its pirate activities against fishermen, including kidnapping, physical attacks, confiscation of their boats, and not allowing them to practice the fishing profession in Yemen’s territorial waters.

They stressed that these acts of piracy committed against fishermen in the Red Sea are among the many war crimes against Yemen. In light of the shameful international silence, Sana’s government officials called on the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
and other relevant organizations to take a responsible stance towards these violations and to protect the fishermen.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: January 26th, 2023
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 22:34 Paris does not exclude the supply of fighter jets to Kiev, however, on the condition that this does not provoke an escalation of the war, and also does not harm the security of Europe and, in particular, France itself, said the head of the National Assembly Committee on National Defense and the Armed Forces of France, Thomas Gasillud .

22:31 The declaration of PMC Wagner as a transnational criminal organization means the freezing of any American assets of the group and prohibits US individuals and legal entities from providing funds, goods or services to this group. For more details, see US Sanctions against Wagner .

22:29 Zelensky said in an evening video message that the tank coalition already includes 12 countries. "Russian terror requires asymmetric responses. We need a new movement of our forces at the front. We need to ensure the defeat of the ground forces of terrorists. No matter what the Russian occupiers are planning, our preparation must be stronger," the president stressed.

21:45 Ukraine turned to Estonia with a request to transfer cluster munitions, and Tallinn is asking Berlin to allow their re-export, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said: “Estonia has decided to provide Ukraine with 155 mm artillery ammunition. If we provide Ukraine with cluster munitions, I don’t see problems, since both belligerents are already using such munitions on the territory of Ukraine."

21:03 Reznikov said that Western tanks on the battlefield will be supported by Ukrainian artillery - in particular, Bogdan's self-propelled artillery mount: "Last year, after a critical period when a significant amount of resources was directed to import necessary for defense, the Ministry of Defense prepared a transition to The amount of funds was sent to Ukrainian manufacturers in 2023. This applies to all components - from uniforms, shoes, bulletproof vests and UAVs to heavy weapons and ammunition." The minister added that soon the Ministry of Defense will present the first results of work on Ukrainian drones.

20:29 The Russians are actively using mobile crematoria - in the rear of the advanced positions of the occupiers, there is a constant movement of about five such vehicles, Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar said, citing military intelligence data. According to the GUR, cremations take place without any identification and accounting of the bodies of the dead. Thus, the Russian command hides the huge losses of personnel and avoids paying compensation to the families of the victims.

20:24 France has not yet decided to transfer Leclerc tanks to Ukraine, but promises to respond to Kiev's request for help with air defense systems, Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said during a visit to Odessa.

20:21 Auditors are in Kiev this week to ensure accountability for U.S. military and financial aid, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said: "The administration remains focused on preventing the misuse of aid or weapons. We are partnering with the World Bank, with the consulting firm Deloitte, and with a group of US government auditors who are in Kiev this week."

19:56 PACE stated in its resolution that Russian official rhetoric, which is used to justify a full-scale invasion and aggression against Ukraine, has signs of public incitement to genocide and may indicate a genocidal intent to destroy the Ukrainian national group as such, or at least part of it.

19:53 Trump announced the nuclear threat after the transfer of tanks to Ukraine: "First the tanks come, then the nuclear bombs. Stop this crazy war now. It's so easy to do."

19:40 Canada will transfer four Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Defense Minister Anita Anand said. The Canadian military will also be sent to help train Ukrainian crews.

19:27 Zelensky announced that he had held a regular meeting of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, where they discussed measures for even more reliable counteraction to future missile threats. We also listened to the reports of the commanders of the troops of the operational areas on the current situation at the front, examined in detail the situation in the Bakhmut direction. We discussed the issues of the receipt of weapons and equipment and its operational distribution among groupings of troops. Particular attention was paid to the issue of training the Ukrainian military abroad.

19:23 The United States will supply Ukraine with an improved version of the M1A2 Abrams tanks in export configuration, but without secret additional equipment, writes Politico.

6:48 pm Biden is considering a trip to Europe next month to coincide with the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NBC News reports, citing three White House officials.

18:35 The United States may ease sanctions against Russia for the sake of serious negotiations on Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian troops from there, said Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland. She also said that the United States would not have time to send Abrams tanks to Ukraine by spring.

18:23 France will give Ukraine 3 million euros to ensure nuclear security, Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said during a visit to Odessa.

18:09 Podolyak announced the "final turning point" in the supply of Western military assistance to Ukraine: "There are still echoes of the fear of escalation, but everyone has already understood that there will be no escalation. The escalation is already in full, there is already a big war, and everything is needed give Ukraine here and now... Now there will be an era of saturation of Ukraine with everything necessary to reach the finals in this war."

According to the adviser to the head of the OP, Ukraine needs 350-400 tanks to form tank assault brigades. "I think that we will reach this figure," Podolyak is convinced. According to him, the only problem in terms of supply remains logistics.

He also believes that Russia's nuclear threats towards the West due to the transfer of tanks to Ukraine will not ultimately lead to the real use of these weapons, since the nuclear club, including China and India, will not allow this.

17:46 The United States has declared the Wagner Group a transnational criminal organization, the country's Ministry of Finance announced. The United States is also imposing visa sanctions against 531 representatives of the Russian Armed Forces, the State Department said.

17:27 The United States is imposing new sanctions against Russian legal entities and individuals, the US Treasury said. The list includes ship repair enterprises, structures and individuals associated with the Wagner and Prigozhin groups.

17:00 Today, the first meeting of "financial Ramstein" - a donor coordination platform with the participation of ministers of partner countries - took place, Shmyhal said. The prime minister announced the key tasks of the platform:

  • Providing predictable, rhythmic budgetary support in 2023. "We have $18 billion from the EU and almost $10 billion from the US. We expect to finance the difference in the deficit with the help of the IMF," the prime minister said.

  • Plan and ensure the beginning of the restoration of Ukraine. To do this, the government has identified four priorities: energy recovery, humanitarian demining, housing, critical and social infrastructure.

  • Coordination of financial instruments to support the economy and the private sector (war risk insurance, public-private partnership, assistance in financing projects to support small businesses).

16:54 In the Kharkiv region, the Russians fired at the village of Dvurechnaya this afternoon. According to preliminary information, two local residents died, Oleg Sinegubov, head of the OVA, said. In Odessa, the power supply of critical infrastructure was resumed, but the situation there remains difficult.

Only in the past day, on January 25, according to the General Staff, the enemy lost 600-700 people killed, that is, almost a battalion. This is not counting the wounded. In two months of attempts to break through our defenses, enemy losses are comparable to two Chechen wars."

Cherevaty stressed that the enemy has not been able to break through the Ukrainian defenses for two months.

14:44 PACE voted for the creation of a special tribunal against Russia and Belarus for crimes in Ukraine and recognized that the military aggression of the Russian Federation began in 2014, not 2022.

13:46 Russia used a new tactic to attack Kiev - a combined air strike, said the head of the KGVA Sergey Popko. At night, the enemy attacked the capital with Iranian Shahed-type drones, the purpose of which was not only to destroy ground targets, but also to identify and deplete the Ukrainian air defense forces. After that, the second wave of the enemy made a massive attack with missiles of various types.

13:40 As a result of today's missile attack, there are hits and damage to equipment in the Southern, Central, Southwestern regions. In the Dnipro region, at one of the power facilities, the main high-voltage equipment was destroyed, Ukrenergo reported. Problems with power supply caused by shelling in the south, including in the Odessa region. During the attack, emergency shutdowns were introduced throughout Ukraine, and now the planned schedules of restrictions are gradually returning. The deficit in the system is significant, consumption limits have been brought to all regions.

13:13 The Russians fired 55 missiles in Ukraine today, 47 of them were shot down , Zaluzhny said. The enemy carried out 55 launches of air and sea-based missiles (Kh-101, Kh-555, Kh-47 Kinzhal, Caliber, Kh-59) from Tu-95, Su-35, MiG-31K aircraft and ships from the Black Sea. Air defense forces and means destroyed 47 cruise missiles, 20 of them in the capital area. In addition, three out of four Kh-59 guided air missiles did not reach their targets.

13:08 All over Ukraine, starting from the night, an air raid alarm sounded. First, the occupiers launched 24 Iranian "shaheeds" on our territory, and later they once again tried to carry out a massive attack using missiles. For more details, see Strike on Ukraine: where Russian missiles hit .

12:57 French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna arrived in Odessa , Kuleba said.

12:40 Germany will deliver the first Leopard tanks to Ukraine in about three months. At the same time, the Bundeswehr will begin "very quickly" to train the Ukrainian military in the handling of new weapons and will refine supply routes, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said.

He also added that Berlin would first provide Kyiv with "relatively new" Leopard tanks from the warehouses of the Bundeswehr in order to deliver the first battalion to Ukraine together with partners. At the second stage, the second battalion will be formed from old tanks, it will take a little more time, the minister specified.

12:19 In the Kiev region, as a result of an enemy attack, there is a hit in an energy facility, civilian infrastructure facilities, private and multi-storey buildings, cars in some areas of the region are also damaged. There were no casualties or injuries, the OVA said. Currently, emergency power cuts are applied in the region, cutoff schedules do not work.

12:15 Last spring, Poland, against the backdrop of disputes over the supply of fighter jets to Ukraine, nevertheless delivered several MiG-29s to Kiev in the form of spare parts, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna writes.

11:52 In the West, a discussion has already begun about the possibility of providing Ukraine with fighter jets in the future, writes Politico. The debate is expected to be even more difficult than around tanks due to escalation fears. According to one of the interlocutors of the publication, in Washington they say that fighters "are out of the question for the time being." At the same time, he recalled that last summer the red line was HIMARS, then tanks, that is, these red lines are gradually shifting.

11:43 Ukraine needs longer-range missiles before Russia sends reinforcements, Vadym Skibitsky, a spokesman for the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, said in an interview with CNN. According to him, the invaders began to transfer military cargo throughout the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as through the Crimean peninsula to the southern regions. Now their military depots are located 80-120 km from the front line, and in order to strike at them, Ukraine needs longer-range artillery.

Skibitsky stressed that Ukraine also needs long-range artillery in order to launch a counteroffensive before the arrival of reinforcements from the Russian Federation: "Especially now, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, heavy weapons are needed to form powerful strike groups, which would allow a quick counteroffensive against the enemy."

11:29 A meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine chaired by Stoltenberg will be held at NATO Headquarters on February 14, the alliance said.

11:15 Ukrainian military for the first time will be held in Norway exercises in shooting, command management and medical training, said Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram. It’s not interesting to meet, it’s not interesting to talk… I really don’t understand who makes decisions in Russia. I don’t want to fight on Russian territory. I want them to stop the war as soon as possible and leave our country as soon as possible. I can tell you for sure - if they leave our territory, the war will stop. That's all ... After a full-scale invasion, Putin is nobody for me."

11:06 Peskov said that the supply of arms by Western countries to Ukraine "talks about their direct involvement in the conflict, it is growing." He also noted that there is no topic on the agenda of changing the status of "special operation" due to the supply of tanks to Kyiv. Earlier, State Duma deputy from Crimea Mikhail Sheremet proposed changing the status of a "special operation" in order to put the economy on a war footing.

10:55 As a result of a massive missile attack, there are hits and damage to several energy infrastructure facilities in Odessa and other regions of Ukraine, so now there are significant problems with power supply, said the head of the Odessa OVA Maxim Marchenko.

10:47 As a result of a rocket hitting non-residential buildings in the Goloseevsky district of Kiev, there is information about one dead and two wounded, Klitschko said. According to the KGVA, we are talking about the fall of part of the rocket.

09:58 During the morning missile attack, Russia pays more attention to the center of Ukraine, Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat said. According to him, according to preliminary data, the enemy fired Kh-101 and Kh-505 missiles. Data on sea launches of cruise missiles are not yet available.

09:37 On the morning of January 26, about six Tu-95 aircraft, previously from the Murmansk region, took off and fired missiles at Ukraine. In total, more than 30 missiles are expected, which have already begun to appear in several areas. Air defense is working, Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat said.

09:25 In the Kherson region over the past day, as a result of Russian shelling, two civilians were killed, five more were injured, the IVA reported.

08:46 In the Donetsk region over the past day, as a result of Russian shelling, one civilian was killed - in Bakhmut. Seven more people were injured in the region, Pavel Kirilenko, head of the OVA, said.

08:27 Suffering numerous losses, the enemy does not stop offensive operations in the Bakhmut and Novopavlovsk directions. In the Limansky and Avdeevsky directions, he conducted unsuccessful offensive operations, in the Kupyansky, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson - he is defending, the General Staff said in the morning summary .

The defense forces repelled the attacks of the occupiers in the areas of the settlements of Chervonopopovka, Luhansk region and Verkhnekamenskoye, Disputed, Razdolovka, Blagodatnoye, Bakhmut, Kleshcheevka, Marinka, Vuhledar and Pavlovka, Donetsk region.

Rocket attacks on Ukraine. 01/26/2023
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

[ColonelCassad] After a nighttime prelude with "Geraniums" (several successful hits, especially bright in Dnepropetrovsk), in the morning the Russian Aerospace Forces began delivering planned missile strikes on the energy structure of Ukraine.

At 10-30 there are hits on the Kyiv PSP, a substation in Usatovo (Odessa), as well as explosions in Vinnitsa, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Poltava, Nikolaev regions.

There is an air raid throughout Ukraine, air defense works in a number of regions, and the lights were switched off in some regions. The SBU continues to intimidate citizens, demanding not to publish footage of arrivals and air defense operations, as well as not to discuss and analyze missile strikes.

For now, the attack continues.

Stepashin called for the return of Stalingrad
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary in italics by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

[ColonelCassad] Former Russian Prime Minister Stepashin called for the renaming of Volgograd to Stalingrad.
The other day we discussed Russians recalling fondly the days of Communism, and even Stalinism. As the evolutionists would say, we are pre-adapted for this essay.
Volgograd should be renamed Stalingrad again to preserve the memory of the victory in the battle of the same name, former Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin said. “If even today there is Stalingrad Square in Paris, it would be wrong not to have the city of Stalingrad in my country,” Stepashin said, speaking at the round table “Volgograd or Stalingrad? 80 years later: the lessons of history and modern meanings.

He noted that the figure of Joseph Stalin in history is "ambiguous", but "the Battle of Stalingrad - it was, is and will be, and we will not leave it anywhere." According to Stepashin, the victory at Stalingrad was of particular importance for the future of the country.

On January 20, RIA Novosti reported that the International Union of Former Juvenile Prisoners of Fascism called for the renaming of Volgograd to Stalingrad. The organization sent a corresponding letter to the head of the organizing committee for the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad Dmitry Medvedev and the governor of the Volgograd region Andrey Bocharov.

Every year, calls to rename the city sound higher and higher. Right now, the activation of these statements is connected with the approach of the 80th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops near Stalingrad. The Kremlin is still thinking about this issue and clear signals - whether they will rename the city or not, are not yet sent. Perhaps there is a probing of public opinion on this issue.PS. So far, the city is renamed Stalingrad several days a year on holidays. The same practice exists in St. Petersburg, Donetsk and Lugansk, which are temporarily renamed Leningrad, Stalino and Voroshilovgrad for the holidays associated with the Great Patriotic War.

#1  He noted that the figure of Joseph Stalin in history is "ambiguous",

...We talkin' about the same Iosif Vissarionovitch? Because there is nothing ambiguous about his place in history. The word 'monster' doesn't even begin to do him justice.

#1  Aid to restore one or more villages in a controlled way subject to audit has always made sense for me. The funds instead end up getting transferred to NGOs often of Soros type. There is no accounting for where the money went nor is their evidence of any benefit for the people who were supposed to receive aid. They need concrete for house foundations and plumbing and instead some of the money goes to grants for abortions, sterilizations or gender reassignments while the bulk of the money ends up in a stateside campaign for a consultant feeding frenzy.

Pvt. L.C. Byrd was later killed on November 9, 1944, while serving with the 761st Tank Battalion in France.

Despite everything, the Racist Democrats were doing to hurt Black Americas in the 1940's. He still joined the Military to Fight for his country and died doing so.

QUESTION
When will we bring home the bodies of our solders that were buried in Europe during WWII and rejoin them with their family here.

These men died saving me and France, I owe them.

2 years later, Socialist direction moving France kicked out the US Military and families. Took over $$ Billions of recently renovated family quarters and installations.

Perpetrators of ‘modern slavery’ given up to 12 years in US
[Dawn] Three members of a Pak-American family were sentenced this week to prison terms ranging from five to 12 years, for their roles in keeping a woman from Pakistain in forced labour at their home for more than 12 years.

US federal authorities, who described the case as "modern-day slavery", said the victim had married into the family.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the US Justice Department said that Zahida Aman, 80, was sentenced to 12 years; Mohammed Rehan Chaudhri, 48, to 10 years; and Mohammad Nauman Chaudhri, 55, to five years in a federal prison in the Eastern District of Virginia.

Additionally, the court in Richmond, Virginia — where the defendants and the victim lived — ordered Aman and Rehan Chaudhri to pay the victim around $250,000 in restitution for back wages and other financial losses the victim incurred because of the defendants’ criminal conduct.

According to court documents, in 2002, the victim married Aman’s son, and the brother of defendants Nauman and Rehan Chaudhri. Thereafter, she lived in their home.

Over the next 12 years, the three defendants forced her to perform domestic services. To coerce that labour, the defendants verbally assaulted and physically abused the victim. The defendants slapped, kicked, and pushed the victim, even beat her with a wooden board, and, on one occasion, hog-tied her hands and feet and dragged her down the stairs in front of her children.

Even though the victim had temporary immigration status in the United States, Aman took her immigration documents. Thereafter, the defendants threatened the victim with deportation, should she not obey their demands.

The defendants also threatened to separate the victim from her children.

Following a seven-day trial in May 2022, the jury convicted all defendants of conspiracy to commit forced labour, convicted two of the defendants of forced labour, and convicted Aman of document servitude.

Jessica D. Aber, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and Stanley M. Meador, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI
...Formerly one of the world's premier criminal investigation organizations, something for a nation to be proud of. Now it's a political arm of the Deep State oligarchy that is willing to trump up charges, suppress evidence, or take out insurance policies come election time...
Richmond Field Office, made the announcement after sentencing by US District Judge John A. Gibney.

They banished the victim from the main part of the house to a basement to hide their conduct, limiting her access to food and basic human interactions and further separating her from her children, the prosecutor said.

Their conduct made the victim so desperate that she tried to take her own life twice. The victim lost 60 pounds and clumps of her hair during the 12-year ordeal and was physically unrecognisable to one of her brothers when he first encountered her after he travelled to the US from Pakistain to learn whether she was still alive.

After they were married, her husband told her that if she wanted to please him, she had to make his family and, particularly his mother happy. Within weeks of her arrival, the victim was forced to work all day and was slapped on a regular basis for performing chores incorrectly. On one occasion, she was tied with rope and pushed down the stairs in front of her children as punishment for taking one of the family member’s phones and trying to call her husband who had moved to Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, where he lived with a girlfriend.

The defendants eventually moved the victim into the laundry room, where she slept on a mat on the floor.

Salman Chaudhri and the victim had four children from 2003 to 2008, before he moved out. In May 2016, the victim beat feet from the family’s home with help from her brother and contacted the local police. The victim currently lives in Connecticut with all four children.

Prosecutors said the worst punishment the defendants inflicted was the wedge they drove between the victim and her children. They convinced the children their mother was a monster, forcing them to spit on her.

Because we import many of our Medications and/or goods from China & India, which are the top 2 slave nations in the world.

And then, there are also 90+ countries, where a person cannot be prosecuted for enslaving another human being.

Schiff: Facebook Reinstating Trump Is Putting Profit Above Public Interest

In a manner reminiscent of Joe McCarthy, on March 22, 2017, in a interview with Chuck Todd on MSNBC Schiff claimed there was “more than circumstantial evidence now” that Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia." said, "Donald Trump is the only announced Republican candidate so far for president. He has just been given back access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts."

Schiff said, "I think Facebook’s decision to reinstate Donald Trump is inexplicable. It represents, in my view, a total caving in and copping out. The only motive I can see is a profit motive here."

He added, "If you look at what Donald Trump has been posting on his own social media platform, all of that violates Facebook’s policies. He’s continued to give aid and comfort to those who committed acts of insurrection. He’s continuing to spread the big lie. And the idea that somehow he would not do that on Facebook when he’s doing it on his own platform, to me, is a tragic decision by a company that is putting its profit above the public interest."

Reid added, "They have said they believe the threat has passed, which seems ludicrous."

#6  With the amount of graft available at the Senate level, there will likely be a host of challengers. California politics is sort of like Saruman’s orc spawning pool. Don’t discount the possibility that a more despicable candidate might emerge. Their district attorney farm system is top flight. Kamala Harris is a generational talent, but there are still some up and comers working on their craft at through that system. The mayoral pipeline is also robust.

Freed port blast detainee arrives in US shortly after release
See also here for the activities of the folks who stayed behind.
[An Nahar] The director of the Security and Safety Dept. at Beirut’s port, who was released from detention Wednesday at State Prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat’s order, has arrived in the United States.
“Curly-toed slippers, don’t fail me now!”
A dual American-Lebanese citizen, the director, Mohammed Ziad al-Ouf, was among 17 port case detainees freed on Wednesday in a move disputed by the lead investigative judge in the case Judge Tarek Bitar.

Al-Ouf’s lawyer Sakher al-Hashem said the suspended director has "arrived in the United States, and will not return to Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2020 Hezbollah blew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate facility exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that. And it ain't never coming to trial...
A judicial official said that the United States had lobbied for his release.

Al-Ouf traveled despite the fact that Oueidat had slapped travel bans on all the released detainees. Some media reports meanwhile said that al-Ouf left the country before the issuance of the travel bans.

Nizar Zakka, President of the U.S.-based Hostage Aid Worldwide, tweeted that al-Ouf has been "freed from unlawful detention in Lebanon for more than 2 years."

He "will finally be reunited with his family!", Zakka added, thanking U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Roger Carstens, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Hostage Aid Worldwide and "everyone who helped" secure al-Ouf’s release.

Speaking to al-Jadeed TV, Zakka said al-Ouf traveled to carry out medical checkups in the United States and will return to Lebanon.

"He didn’t want to travel. He wanted to stay (in Lebanon) but he was pressured to go do his medical checkups," Zakka added, clarifying that the checkups were requested by the U.S. government seeing as this is the routine procedure for those freed from "arbitrary detention."

Asked about the travel ban issued by Oueidat, Zakka said he did not know about such an order and that al-Ouf "traveled normally" through Beirut’s airport.

#1  The best part of Lebanese news is when they present conflicting and mutually exclusive accounts of what happened and projections about the future. Ghassan is not going back versus he is going back is presented nearly in the same paragraph.

Realistically, Ghassan should probably stay in the US as it sounds like he has an ironclad J6 alibi. J6 participation seems like it may be the only activity that you can engage in within the US that will land you in detention for an indeterminate period of time. Ghassan should be good going forward as long as he manages to never meet or support DJT.

SDF Arrests Local ISIS Leader In Syria’s Raqqa

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Thursday the arrest of the “Wali of Raqqa,” a regional Islamic State (ISIS) leader, during the first day of “Operation Retaliation for Raqqa Martyrs,” a large-scale security operation in the countryside of Raqqa, north Syria.

The SDF Media Center announced in a statement that the operation, with air support from the US-led Global Coalition, resulted in the arrest of 68 ISIS “terrorists” among them “Atallah al-Maythan the Wali [governor] of the so-called Wilayah [province] al-Raqqa.”

The arrested “al-Maythan” led the ISIS sleeper cells affiliated with the “Khalid bin Al-Walid Battalion,” the statement noted.

During the interrogation, al-Maythan admitted that he planned and led terrorist acts, extorted residents to finance ISIS, and facilitated communication among terrorist groups, the statement reads.

The SDF announced on Wednesday the launch of a new operation to pursue ISIS sleeper cells in coordination with the US-led Global Coalition in Raqqa, Tabqa and surrounding regions in northern Syria.

The statement indicated that joint forces raided al-Karamal, a town 20 km east of Raqqa, al-Mansoura, a town west of Raqqa, and the towns of Sarrin and al-Jarniyah this morning.

The joint forces also arrested eight ISIS militants, two of whom had fled to areas outside the SDF-held areas across the Euphrates River after shooting at SDF fighters. No casualties were reported, the statement added.
Al Ahram adds:
The captured IS commander was identified as Atallah al-Maythan. Syrian Kurdish forces said he headed the Death Eater group's operations across Raqqa province, and allegedly ``confessed to his involvement in planning and leading terrorist acts,`` extorted money from residents in the area, and kept IS sleeper cells in contact.

Some 5,000 Syrian Kurdish-led fighters are involved in the operation, and have already raided some 80 locations, their spokesperson, Farhad Shami, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. The U.S.-led coalition was providing air support, reconnaissance, and gathering intelligence, Shami added.

This is the second recent operation by the U.S.-backed forces in Syria. In late December, the Syrian Kurdish-led fighters targeted IS cells in al-Hol and Tal Hamis, following a surge in Death Eater attacks.

The U.S. Central Command said that 215 turbans from the Islamic State

They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group were arrested last year and 466 were killed in Syria. There are roughly 900 U.S. troops in Syria.

Nigerian Military Air Strikes Killed 31 Herdsmen, 8 Butchers, Cattle In Nasarawa
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has accused the Nigerian Air Force of killing its members in the Rukubi community of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

MACBAN President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma disclosed this in a statement sent to SaharaReporters on Thursday.

He said the herders, numbering about 40 were killed by operatives of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi, Benue State.

According to him, they were killed while returning from Makurdi, the Benue State capital, where they went to retrieve over 1,000 cows seized by the Benue Livestock Guards.

He said that after the payment of fines amounting to N29 million, some of the livestock was released to the herders by the guards and they were sadly trailed and killed while offloading the cattle shortly after they reached their destination in Nasarawa State.

The statement read, "The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria — MACBAN condemns the Barbaric killing of 30 Pastoralists with unspecified number of livestock by a purported Bombing raid from unknown source on January 21st 2023 in Rukubi Community, Ikye Development Area, Doma Local Government Nasarawa State.

"Those killed had gone to Makurdi to retrieve about 1,250 of their cows impounded by the Benue Livestock guards after paying a fine of about 29 Million Naira for violating the "anti-open grazing law of Benue State".

"After paying, the pastoralist had hired vehicles from Makurdi to convey back their seized livestock to Rukubi, and it was in the process of offloading their livestock that an attack was conducted which killed 31 Pastoralists, 8 Hausa Butchers from Benue who have escorted the vehicles to upload the cows and four (4) others are now on admission in Lafia Hospital.

"His Excellency, the Deputy Governor Nasarawa State, Commissioner of Police, the Emirs of Lafia & Doma, the Doma LG Chairman and the State Chairman MACBAN were all in attendance during the Burial of the dear departed in Rukubi Community today.

"This is the third time we have experienced such happenings. In the last two happenings, it was clear that the Airforce is being involved in strafing livestock between the border of Benue & Nasarawa State within the last one year.

"But in the recent one, it is not clear whether it was a Bomb Blast, distant attack or an Airstrike as reported by our Nasarawa State Branch."

MACBAN describes the action as not only condemnable but a war crime under the Geneva convention that prohibits the wanton killing of livestock.

He said, "We call on the authorities to not only investigate this terror but to also punish the culprits and to be sure that incidents like this will not happen again.

"Information available to us shows that the perpetrators must have been informed about the release of the livestock from Benue Livestock Guards Custody to impose double jeopardy on pastoralists lives and their assets.

"We wonder how animals easily become culprits to deserve such barbaric action by a supposedly disciplined and well-trained outfit of the Federal Government. MACBAN demands an unreserved apology to the families of the victims and to Nigerians in General for this reckless and reprehensible act of barbarism.

"The Federal Government must also investigate this incident as a matter of urgency and put a stop to the involvement of Airforce in the pursuit and killing of livestock to appease the Benue state Government. Adequate compensation must also be paid to the relatives of the victims as a Matter of serious concern."

US special ops kill senior ISIS leader, 10 associates in raid in Puntland’s Almiskad Mountains of

“Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said.

US forces carried out a raid this week that killed a senior ISIS commander in Somalia and ten of his associates, officials said on Thursday.

The operation was ordered by US President Joe Biden and carried out on Wednesday. Bilal al-Sudani was the senior ISIS figure targeted and killed, according to a statement from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

“Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan,” Austin said. “This action leaves the United States and its partners safer and more secure, and it reflects our steadfast commitment to protecting Americans from the threat of terrorism at home and abroad.”

No civilians were harmed during the operation, senior US administration officials said.

An official told reports that US special operations forces raided a cave complex in the mountains of northern Somalia, hoping to capture al-Sudani initially.

Officials said that Biden was briefed about the operation last week and approved it this week.

Last year, the Biden administration redeployed hundreds of US troops to Somalia, reversing a decision by former President Donald Trump to withdraw the forces that were on a counterterrorism mission.

“Al-Shabab has taken advantage of Somali instability and fractious politics to become al-Qaeda’s largest and wealthiest global affiliate. It exerts influence essentially throughout the country of Somalia,” a US official said at the time.

Personnel of the effective work of the Russian air defense
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets:

Video courtesy of Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

For those who do not quite understand the video, I will explain a little,

"Shell" works according to Hymers. An air defense missile explodes next to the missile that needs to be shot down, and already knocks down the missile with fragments. The video shows how the air defense missile explodes, and the black cloud appears in a different place. Most likely, the "Shells" work in parallel with the cannon.

I remember that at first it was possible to shoot down one or two missiles from a salvo (that's six missiles). But the indicators of successful air defense work gradually grew. They began to shoot down four to five missiles out of six. The Chimeras began to work in pairs, firing double volleys in the hope of overloading the air defense.

And now we see the complete interception of a volley of two cars. This is exactly what the skill of our military.

P.S.
According to rumors, comparative tests of the "Shell" and "Thor" were carried out

There were no reports on the web. There were only rumors that Thor won the field tests. In Syria in Khmenim, again, according to rumors, Thor performed better in repelling massive attacks by artisanal UAVs.

But in Ukraine, when repelling mass shelling of MLRS and against Tochki-U, the Pantsir began to show itself superbly.

In general, I have the opinion that the Tor is better suited against a massive UAV raid (and, of course, when covering troops on the march), and the Pantsir is better against rockets (after all, it was originally created for these tasks as well).

Economy
The troubling GDP report: $1 trillion drop in real disposable income, the second-largest percentage drop in real disposable income ever, behind only 1932, worst year ever
[FoxBusinessNews] Thursday's GDP report shows that real disposable income has fallen off a cliff.

The latest numbers from the Bureau of Economic Analysis show that the U.S. economy grew by 2.9 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, and 2.1 percent for 2022. While the White House was quick to take credit for the state of the nation’s economy, they might want to think twice. This latest report should have alarm bells ringing, not trumpets sounding.

That’s because economic growth is slowing down. Even the areas which contributed positively to gross domestic product (GDP) are not necessarily signs of prosperity. For example, business investment grew at only 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter, but that was almost entirely inventory growth. Nonresidential investment, a key driver of future economic growth, was up just 0.7 percent.

Meanwhile, residential investment fell off a cliff, dropping 26.7 percent as consumers were unable to afford the combination of high home prices, high interest rates and falling real incomes. No wonder homeownership affordability has fallen to the lowest level in that metric’s history.

But the growth in inventories, which accounted for half the GDP growth in the fourth quarter, is not a good sign, either. It is the result of businesses being unable to sell off existing inventories at current prices. Liquidating that inventory at discounts will mean lower profits, a further drag on future growth.

Q3 GDP data beats estimates. FOX Business' Cheryl Casone with more. video
Another positive contributor to the GDP number was net exports, which is simply exports minus imports. But the gain here resulted from a slowdown in international trade — hardly a sign of wealth for Americans. Instead, imports are simply falling faster than exports, which shows up as an increase in GDP.

But perhaps most troubling is the precipitous drop in real disposable income, which fell over $1 trillion in 2022.

For context, this is the second-largest percentage drop in real disposable income ever, behind only 1932, the worst year of the Great Depression. To keep up with inflation, consumers are depleting their savings and burning through the "stimulus" checks they received during 2020 and 2021. Credit card debt continues growing, while savings plummeted $1.6 trillion last year, falling below 2009 levels.

As consumers continue depleting cash reserves and borrowing costs are rising, the growth in consumer spending will keep slowing. Since that accounts for roughly two-thirds of GDP, this doesn’t bode well for the economy.

Just how much pain is the consumer feeling? The average family has lost about $6,000 in annual purchasing power under Biden because prices have risen so much faster than wages. Higher interest rates have increased annual borrowing costs by $1,400, so that the average family effectively has $7,400 less in their annual budget.

But that’s just the average. Someone trying to buy a median priced home today will have a monthly mortgage payment that is 80 percent higher than when Biden took office. That means spending an extra $9,500 a year for the same house. It’s no wonder people are financially strapped and taking on second or third jobs in this economy.

Meanwhile, federal nondefense spending grew 11.2 percent in the fourth quarter, another example of politicians feeding the federal budget while starving the family budget.

#1  Real Disposable fell in 2022 compared to 2021 mostly because in 2021, there was Recovery Rebate Checks and/or credits in 2021 but not in 2022.

#5  GDP is likely to increase in Q1 of calendar 2023 but the rest of the year doesn't look good.

Inflation gives biz an incentive to build inventory but this tops out eventually.

Google fires 31 massage therapists amid mass layoffs that cut 12,000 jobs
[NYPOST] Stressed-out Google employees in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, are getting rubbed the wrong way after the tech giant axed more than two dozen in-house massage therapists, according to filings in California viewed by The Post on Thursday.
The poor darlings — both massage therapists and clients.
Google parent Alphabet — which disclosed last week it is firing 12,000 employees across its business worldwide — laid off a total of 1,845 employees in its home state, the filings dated Jan. 20 showed. Cuts within the state accounted for about 15% of Google’s overall round of layoffs, according to the filing.

The axed employees included 31 massage therapists who worked at various offices within the state — with 27 based out of Google’s sprawling headquarters in Mountain View. The others worked at offices in San Bruno, Irvine and Los Angeles.

Google touts the perk of on-site massages on a section of its career site titled "Googley Extras." The page states that employees have access to "fitness centers, massage programs and ergonomic support," among a host of other supplemental benefits.

The Post has reached out to Google for comment on whether the free massages are still available to the employees who remain.

#1  When I worked for a mid-west tech giant in the 89-2003 range, I noticed that engineers and executives that actually used the in-house corporate gym were usually the first laid off.

I stayed away from the corporate gym for that reason.

#3  I think Deshawn understands that this means and will look for corresponding price drops from his vendors.
