[UPI] Australian police said Saturday they uncovered a Melbourne-based criminal syndicate after a plane loaded with more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine crashed in Papua New Guinea.
The plane crashed Sunday shortly after taking off en route to Australia. Police charged alleged members of a syndicate they said conspired to transport cocaine between the two countries.
"Greed played a significant part in the syndicate's activities," the Australian Federal Police said in a statement, adding that it "cannot rule out that the weight of the cocaine had an impact on the plane's ability to takeoff."
The plane was found empty Monday near Papa Lea Lea, about 19 miles northwest of Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby, with its pilot missing. On Tuesday, the pilot presented himself to the Australia Consulate in Papua New Guinea and he was arrested and charged, the AFP statement said.
With the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary conducting ongoing investigation throughout the week, by late Friday, the national police force found 28 bags containing more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine alleged to be linked to the flight, Australian Federal Police said in the statement.
The AFP, working with Queensland and Victoria Police, Australian Border Force, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, and the national police force, has charged five men linked to the incident, who could all face life imprisonment, according to the statement.
Police said the five men were arrested in Queensland and Victoria on Sunday, on allegations that they intended to carry out the importation and collection of cocaine from Papua New Guinea estimated to be worth more than $80 million.

[Rudaw] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... ’s war with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) came very close to a major city on Saturday. A Ottoman Turkish jet targeted and missed a suspected PKK vehicle northeast of Duhok city, according to local officials. 12 miles

The area is just 20 kilometres from Duhok city, home to about 400,000 people.
Bashir said no one was injured in the Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... , but it "sparked panic among the villagers." This is the first time the area has been targeted by Turkey’s bombs, he added.
Footage of Saturday’s incident submitted to Rudaw shows people gathering around the scorched site and collecting shrapnel.
Turkey launched its current offensive in the Kurdistan Region on June 15, with the stated aim of removing PKK fighters from the border areas. Operations have focused on areas in Duhok province’s Zakho region where villagers living in the mountains have borne the brunt of Turkey's bombing.
Seven civilians have been killed and many villages have been abandoned. Two people killed last weekend were initially identified as members of the PKK, but their families later denied the connection. Mohammed Abdulla, whose father was killed in the airstrike, told Rudaw his father had no ties with the PKK.

[THEBAGHDADPOST] Iranian teams have cleaned up an oil slick near field in the northern region of the Gulf that had extended over a six-square-km (2.3 square mile) area, an Iranian maritime official said on Saturday.
The cause of the spill, which occurred on Wednesday, was being investigated, the director general of ports and maritime in Iran’s Bushehr Province, Siavash Arjomandzadeh, told the official IRNA news agency.
The cleanup took place near the Abuzar field, Iran’s main production area in the Gulf.
An Iranian official had told IRNA on Thursday that it was difficult to determine the cause of the spill because there were several fields belonging to Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. Abuzar oil field, about 75 km (46 miles) west of Iran’s Kharg Island, has three main platforms producing between 195,000 to 220,000 barrels per day of oil, IRNA reported, adding 107 wells had been drilled in the field of which 67 still operated.

They hate JewsZionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol... said Saturday it has arrested the head of a US-based "terrorist group" accused of being behind a deadly 2008 bombing in the southern city of Shiraz and of other, abortive attacks.
The group's Jamshid Sharmahd, who was leading armed and sabotage operations inside Iran, is now in the powerful hands" of Iran's security forces, state television ... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
said in a report citing a statement from the intelligence ministry.
The statement did not elaborate on where or when the leader of the opposition royalist group known as the Kingdom Assembly of Iran,
... Anjoman-e Padeshahi-e Iran in Farsi, the group is based in Glendora near Los Angeles, where they have a Farsi language television station serving about 600,000 Iranian expats. Their aim is to restore the Pahlavi constitutional monarchy abolished by the 1979 revolution...
or Tondar (Farsi for Thunder),
...sometimes described as a splinter of Kingdom Assembly of Iran, sometimes given as an alternate name, so who knows?
was arrested.
According to the statement, he had orchestrated the April 12, 2008 bombing in a packed mosque in Shiraz that killed 14 people and maimed 215.
Iran hanged three men convicted of the bombing in 2009, saying they had ties to the monarchist group. It said they had been taking orders from an Iranian US-backed "CIA agent" to try to assassinate a high-ranking official in Iran. They were 21-year old Mohsen Eslamian and Ali Asghar Pashtar, 20 - both university students - as well as Rouzbeh Yahyazadeh, 32. The three were found guilty of being "mohareb" (enemies of God) and "corruption on the earth" by a revolutionary court in Tehran.
Iran hanged two other convicted members of the group in 2010, who had "confessed to obtaining explosives and planning to assassinate officials".
The statement issued on Saturday said that Tondar had plotted several other "big operations" which failed. It said that Tondar had planned to blow up a dam in Shiraz, use "cyanide bombs" at a Tehran book fair, and plant an bomb at the mausoleum of the Islamic republic's founder, the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
It was not clear how Iran arrested the US-based Sharmahd.
No doubt it involved a good deal of rappelling down buildings in black ninja suits with green shaheed headbands, dive rolls across open bits of landscape followed by rising alertly to one knee, then dashing off in new directions, and loud cussing while in the background dramatic explosions and bursts of gunfire made their presence known...
Iran's intelligence ministry announced the arrest of a former opposition figure in similarly mysterious circumstances in October last year. Ruhollah Zam, described as a "counter-revolutionary" by Iranian authorities, was sentenced to death last month over "corruption on earth". Zam, who reportedly lived in exile in Gay Paree, ran a channel on the Telegram messaging application called Amadnews and was accused of sparking unrest during anti-government protests last year.
According to the association's website, Sharmahd was born in Tehran in 1955 and grew up in an Iranian-German family before moving to the United States in 2003, where he started to voice anti-Islam and Islamic republic statements.
Authorities did not elaborate on how they apprehended Sharmahd, though Iranian intelligence operatives in the past have used family members and other tricks to lure targets back to Iran or friendly countries to be captured. An alleged Iranian government operative who allegedly tried to hire a hitman to kill Sharmahd disappeared in 2010 before facing trial in California, likely having returned to Iran.
While overshadowed by other exiled opposition groups, Iran reportedly brought up the Kingdom Assembly multiple times while negotiating the terms of the 2015 deal, which saw Tehran limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
A statement attributed to Tondar claimed the assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist in 2010 by a remote-control bomb, though it later said it wasn’t responsible. Suspicion long has fallen on Israel for a string of assassinations targeting scientists amid concerns about Iran’s nuclear program.
🔴#Iran has reportedly arrested Jamshid Sharmahd, ringleader of a US-based terrorist group named Tondar in a “complicated intelligence operation”.
[Washington Examiner] Two anti-abortion activists were arrested Saturday morning after writing "black preborn lives matter" outside of a Planned Parenthood building.
Writing the phrase in chalk on the sidewalk outside of a Planned Parenthood site in Washington, D.C., was part of an event held by Students for Life of America and the Frederick Douglass Foundation, according to the Daily Caller.
"I’m gonna tell you now that if you continue chalking, you will be placed under arrest for defacing property," a police officer could be heard saying to two of the protesters at one point.
