Newsom announces California budget deficit much larger than previously expected
[The Hill] California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) unveiled a revised $306.5 billion budget proposal on Friday, while announcing the state’s budget deficit had grown to $31.5 billion.
Then it was off to the 'French Laundry' for dinner.
This shortfall is about $9 billion more than the $22.5 billion gap he projected in his initial January budget proposal, which totaled about $297 billion.

"We are walking into a budget where we need to maintain our prudence, and we need to prepare not just for the short term but the medium and long term," Newsom said at a Friday press conference, where he presented the revised proposal.

Recognizing the current environment of economic volatility, Newsom stressed the importance of taking that uncertainty "very soberly and seriously as it relates to macroeconomic headwinds."

The total $306.5 billion budget includes $224.1 billion in general spending, $79.5 billion in special funds and $2.9 billion in bond funds.

The May revision estimates $37.3 billion in budgetary reserves — an increase from the $35.6 billion estimated in January.

Although Newsom indicated in January that he did not intend to tap into the reserves, he announced on Friday a $450 million withdrawal from the Safety Net Reserve. This represents about half the funds available within that reserve.

"We are sweeping $450 million from the safety net reserve to help offset costs associated with Medi-Cal and CalWorks," Newsom said, referring to two family assistance programs.

Courtesy of Skidmark, Fox News adds:
California, which has the largest budget in the nation at $306 billion, is one of the few states to have a shortfall this year. Some say it is due in part to a progressive tax code that relies on wealthy taxpayers whose income is closely tied to the performance of the stock market.

In January, Newsom proposed a number of ideas to cover the deficit, including about $9.6 billion in spending cuts that hit some of the state’s ambitious climate programs and other policy areas. His latest proposal includes roughly another $1 billion in spending reductions.

Some of that comes from clawing back unspent money in various programs, including those designed to provide tax refunds and help people with their utility bills.

He’s making up the rest of the deficit by shifting expenses, taking some money from the state’s safety net reserve and borrowing.

"This was not an easy budget, but I hope you see we will try to do our best to hold the line and take care of the most vulnerable and most needy but still maintain prudence," Newsom said.

In a press release, Newsom's office said it was prepared for the shortfall "with the governor and legislature paying down the state’s prior debts, building unprecedented reserves and prioritizing one-time investments."

Republican legislative leaders blasted Newsom’s proposal as another marker of irresponsible spending by the Democrats who control Sacramento.

"His cuts to drought programs are dangerous, his ‘fiscal gimmicks’ are shortsighted and his words about good government and efficiency are yet another empty promise. Californians deserve better," Republican Assembly Leader James Gallagher said in a statement.

Newsom’s press conference comes roughly a year after he touted a budget surplus of $97 billion and said it was "simply without precedent."

The budget shortfall announcement comes almost exactly a week after a committee established by Newsom recommended cash reparations payments to Black residents to make amends for slavery that could cost the state billions if approved by the legislature.

Shortly after the committee approved the plan, Newsom distanced himself from the idea of cash payments to Californians in response to slavery, which was never legal in the state.
The Hill has lots of interesting details about the financials and the honourable governor’s plans going forward at the original link, for those interested in such things.

213 House Democrats Vote Against Securing the Border Hours Before Title 42 Expires
[Townhall] With fewer than eight hours remaining before the expiration of Title 42, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 2, the "Secure the Border Act," by a vote of 219 to 213 — another significant legislative win for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

All Democrats voted against the legislation, as did two House Republicans: Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and John Duarte (R-CA).

That is, 213 Democrats just voted against a bill Republicans crafted to:

  • Require President Biden and his administration to restart border wall construction
  • Begin using new technology at our southern and northern borders
  • Provide funding to hire more Border Patrol agents and pay bonuses
  • Increase DHS transparency so Americans know how many illegal immigrants are unlawfully entering their country
make existing laws stronger to protect unaccompanied children (UAC) from trafficking and abuse
  • Discontinue "catch and release" of illegal immigrants
end the president's abuse of executive immigration authority
  • Improve the asylum process and make it more efficient

Following the successful passage of the Secure the Border Act, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), and Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) slammed the Biden administration for allowing Title 42 to expire while touting their "action to address the chaos at our nation's borders."

Denver Councilwoman Floats Whites-Only Business Tax
[PJ] In the service of collecting on slavery reparations, an ultra-woke Denver city council member is floating a generous (with other people’s money) tax on white-owned businesses.

Racist taxation policy is Equity™, which is one of Our Sacred Values™ in Democracy™.

Obviously, taxing whitey is crucial because Denver has always been a notorious epicenter of White Supremacy™.

    Via the New York Post:

A Denver councilwoman caused a stir when she declared that white-owned businesses should pay reparations.

Candi CdeBaca, a 37-year-old Democratic Socialist who is facing a run-off election in June, told a business forum Thursday that white-owned businesses should pay an additional race-based tax, which would be given in turn as reparations to minority-owned businesses.

"Capitalism was built on stolen land, stolen labor, and stolen resources," CdeBaca told the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance, 9 News reported.

She said business improvement districts could levy the racial tax.
I thought Affirmative Action, SNAP, and free college tuition accomplished similar outcomes? Is more still needed ?"
’You could be collecting those extra taxes from white-led businesses all over the city and redistributing them to black and brown-owned businesses," she said.

What does "capitalism was built on stolen land, stolen labor, and stolen resources" even mean? Capitalism is an economic ideology that promotes free-market exchange with minimal state interference. It has nothing whatsoever to do with stealing land. If, as has happened throughout history, nominally capitalist states have sanctioned land theft, that is an entirely separate issue from the ideology of capitalism.

This reminds me of that one time Tucker had the ditzy fashion writer from Teen Vogue on his show who had written a cringe thinkpiece about how Trump threatened something she called the "sovereignty of an entire religion," referring to Islam and Trump’s purportedly racist "Muslim ban."

"What does that even mean?" Carlson asked, to which the fashion writer responded with a word salad of more woke gibberish. It was an exquisite interview, vintage Tucker.

#1  The "Whites-Only Business Tax" should be accompanied by a large placard in the window of the business, declaring it.... "White Owned."

Failing that, simply confiscate the business assign it to others via interest free gov't loans.

Chicago Residents Who Voted for Biden in 2020 Outraged Over Plan to Release Illegal Immigrants Into Their Community
[Gateway] South Shore, Chicago residents were outraged with the city’s plans to bring in illegal immigrants to their neighborhood.

The Chicago Mayor’s Office is making plans for housing up to 500 illegal immigrants at the old South Shore High School, but officials have not clarified for how long.

Many South Shore locals were opposed to the proposals because they believe it is unacceptable for the city to rush to help the migrants after disregarding the Black community’s concerns for so long, according to Block Club Chicago.

The Gateway Pundit reported Thursday that the residents criticized the release proposal and urged city officials to take action to halt the impending inflow during the council meeting earlier this week.

Was associated with the Benghazi attack fiasco afterwards, tasked with improving security for diplomates after Hillary Clinton blew it in Libia. She hates Israel, especially Benjamin Netanyahu.
