Is a January Surprise Coming for Impeachment?

#1  And a February 'surprise'. And March. April. May....

#2  ^ That's what the man says, Bobby:

They are never going to stop. They didn’t stop with the Steele Dossier. They didn’t stop with the Mueller investigation. And even after Trump beats this impeachment nonsense, there will be something else. When that crashes and burns, there will be something else. Then as we get into October, there will be yet another “bombshell.”

It’s going to happen and Republicans need to be prepared to combat these types of games instead of looking for excuses to fold as some did in 2016

#3  If they are trying to get this to a kinetic level, they are on the right path. Cooler heads need to prevail.

#5  It’s going to happen and Republicans need to be prepared to combat these types of games instead of looking for excuses to fold as some did in 2016

But that's just it.

The GOPe wants an excuse to fold and get back to business as usual.

They'll happily use these efforts by the Dems to squeeze more and more concessions out of Trump until his agenda is completely eviscerated. (See the farm worker amnesty)

And if the Dems should happen to strike gold with one of these investigations, then so much the better.

#7  ...I wonder if this is an 'insurance policy' - there appears to be no sunset on the AoI, so if the Dems manage to even the odds in the Senate next November, then removing DJT becomes a lot more possible.

#8  #7 Excellent point. And even if they don't pull that move this time, there's nothing to stop them doing it next year.

Just gin up another scandal and repeat the cycle.

Best of all, McConnell and Graham will be only too happy to help.

#9  Mike - my understanding is that work/decisions under one Congress do not carry over to teh next Congress, so AOI should expire if they play these games. It appears they realize they've got a weak hand, refuse to call or bet, and just wanna toss the table/chips.

#10  Technically the House has the sole power of impeachment. The Senate cannot start a trial on its own initiative which is what such a surprise would amount to.

In reality all of this is political. Any federal officer can be removed by a majority in the House and a 2/3 majority in the Senate.

AOC slams Tulsi Gabbard over ‘present’ vote on impeachment articles
[NYPOST] Rep. Alexandria Boom Boom Ocasio-Cortez
Dem represntative from da Bronx in Noo Yawk and leader of the Mean Girl Caucus in Congress. One of the Great Minds of the 21st Century, she is known as much for her innaleck as for her dance moves. She is all in favor of socialism, even though she's fuzzy on the details...
slammed 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Tulsi Gabbard for being the only House Democrat to vote "present" on impeachment articles against President Trump and refusing to take a stand.

"Today was very consequential, and to not take a stand one way or another, on a day of such great consequence to this country, I think is quite difficult," Ocasio-Cortez told news hounds after the historic vote Wednesday, adding, "We are sent here to lead."

Rep. Gabbard (D-Hawaii) did not speak on the House floor, while most other members gave 30-second to one-minute speeches to explain or justify their stances.

During the second vote on charges of obstruction of Congress, Gabbard was seen standing against the back wall of the House chamber on the side where Republicans sit, according to Fox News.

After the presidential contender stunned House Democrats and Republicans alike by refusing to opt for or against the two articles, Gabbard released a statement explaining her decision.

"After doing my due diligence in reviewing the 658-page impeachment report, I came to the conclusion that I could not in good conscience vote either yes or no," the Hawaii Democrat said.

"I could not in good conscience vote against impeachment because I believe President Trump is guilty of wrongdoing.

"I also could not in good conscience vote for impeachment because removal of a sitting President must not be the culmination of a partisan process, fueled by tribal animosities that have so gravely divided our country," Gabbard added.

#1  I have admired Tulsi's spirit and backbone, but in this I think she was a complete waffling coward. She was against impeachment, then forced to be fore it, and now is voting present to try not to piss off the left and moderates.

REWIND: Jan. 29, 2018, FBI Dir rebuts Nunes Memo on FISA abuses- Now we know Wray, too, was lying
[ABCNews] Only hours after President Donald Trump was caught on a live mic saying a controversial, Republican-drafted memo about government surveillance would be released to the public, the House of Wray FBI says as participant in the coup d'état attempt has "grave concerns" about the memo's accuracy.

Two weeks ago, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-California, disclosed that his staff had drafted a memo, which many Republicans say accuses the FBI and Justice Department of abusing surveillance capabilities authorized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or FISA. For days, Nunes refused to share the documents with House colleagues.

In its statement Wednesday, the FBI said it "takes seriously its obligations to the FISA Court and its compliance with procedures overseen by career professionals in the Department of Justice and the FBI. We are committed to working with the appropriate oversight entities to ensure the continuing integrity of the FISA process."
Fast forward 2 years and here we are - the Nunes memo was proven to be true and factual by the IG report last week.

#4  JohnQC Trump is already remaking the courts. He'll get 4 more years and the courts will be unrecognizable to lefties. Add to that there will be few openings left for a long time for anyone hoping to reverse the Constitutional trends being built. Hell the 9th Circuit now has a Republican majority.

All signs point towards a big pro-Trump wave in 2020 so taking over the house seems a serious possibility.

#5  I think the absolutely insane tactics now being pursued by the Democrats is proof positive that they know Trump will win easily next November.

No incumbent loses a peacetime election with a roaring economy and <4% unemployment.

Trump has smashed the 90%-of-the-black-vote foundation that is essential for the Dems to win. The smarter Dems see that this will be a repeat of the British election, with Trump destroying the Dems in every swing state that has a large Afr-American population.

Game over.

Dems know this, which is why they've gone to such absurd lengths - aka The Shitshow - to deny it.

#10  This fear, of losing their 50-year lock on the African-American vote, is also why the Dems are so determined to pursue open borders + mass non-European immigration policies.

It used to be the aggressive, cynical component of what their strategist Ruy Texeira called the path to an "Emerging Democratic Majority."

Now this open-borders ploy is morphing into a defensive maneuver. A desperate one, if Trump breaks up the Dems' Black Bloc.

#11  #9 Indeed. Trump has to get much better at lawfare. I think Bart's performance has been strong on this score.

Let's see what Durham comes up with. Maybe Dershowitz's help will make a difference.

But you're right: the Dems are like cornered rats now. The prospect of more snarling lies and dirty tricks is not to be taken lightly.

Brennan admits 'there were mistakes made' in FISA applications
[FOXNEWS] Former CIA Director John Brennan
...director of the CIA under the Obama administration. One of the deeper dwelling denizens of the Deep State, possibly even the guy who lit the match that launched the Russiagate coup attempt...
, an outspoken critic of President Trump, acknowledged Tuesday that "there were mistakes made" in the highly controversial Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) application process during the Russia investigation as reported by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz.

Appearing on MSNBC, Brennan was asked by host Chris Hayes about "abuses" uncovered by Horowitz, who claimed he found 17 significant errors in the renewed FISA applications into former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, while Horowitz was a member of the B.O. regime.

"Well clearly, there were mistakes made based on the inspector general's reports," Brennan responded. "And I know that a lot of people attribute it to either to incompetence or politicization. Well, I might just attribute it to, these were FBI agents who were doing their level best to try to prevent Russia interference in the election."

He continued, "They were probably overly aggressive, they didn't pay careful enough attention to some of the details, they may have ignored some aspects of the work that was uncovered. But I think the IG was very clear that politicization did not seem to creep into any aspect of their work either at the initiation of the investigation or throughout."

That's our story and we're sticking with the story.

The Russian "cover for action" falls apart under closer examination. The illegal surveillance of US citizens (Trump campaign) would have gone unnoticed and unreported had the Hildebeest won in 2016. The Deep State was counting on a Hildebeest victory. That my friends, was the "mistake."

Brit Hume: One Of The Wonders Of Modern Media Is Its Failure To See Through Adam Schiff
[HOTAIR] Adam Schiff
...Showboating U.S. Representative for California's 28th congressional district since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Schiff has served in Congress since 2001. He currently serves as the chairman of the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. In a manner reminiscent of Joe McCarthy, on March 22, 2017, in a interview with Chuck Todd on MSNBC Schiff claimed there was “more than circumstantial evidence now” that Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia." Todd followed up by asking if he had seen direct evidence of collusion and Schiff responded that there was "evidence that is not circumstantial and is very much worthy of investigation"...
claimed over the weekend that he shouldn’t be held accountable for his own previous efforts to discount the numerous errors in the FBI’s FISA application on Carter Page. "I’m certainly willing to admit that the Inspector General found serious abuses of FISA that I was unaware of," Schiff told Fox News’ Chris Wallace. He added, "Had I known of them, Chris, yes, I would have called out the FBI at the same time. But I think it’s only fair to judge what we knew at the time, not what would be revealed two years later."

As Ed wrote yesterday, Schiff’s explanation for his failure to see what was presented in the Nunes memo is "nonsense on stilts." I wrote a comparison between the information contained in the Nunes memo and the conclusions from the Horowitz report here. Every major point of the memo was substantiated by Horowitz’ report while Schiff’s response memo was cut off at the knees.

Maxine Waters's Unhinged Russia Conspiracy Theory Push
[TOWNHALL] During an interview on CNN on Monday night, House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman The Ageless and Downright Brilliant Comrade Maxine Impeach 45! Waters
...U.S. Representative for California's 43rd congressional district, serving since 1991, a total of 28.04785 years. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the most senior of the twelve black women currently serving in the United States Congress, and a member and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Before becoming a member of Congress she served in the California Assembly, to which she was first elected back when Disco was in flower, in 1976, which would make it 43.04580 years. She has been a politician for virtually all her adult life. If she was a little brighter she'd be a Communist...
(D-CA) pushed a conspiracy theory that President Donald Trump
...The tack in the backside of the Democratic Party...
colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. She admitted that she doesn't have evidence to support the claim.

Her entire conspiracy theory centers around the idea that Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
helped get President Trump elected because he would remove the sanctions placed on Russia.

"Because I believe, even though I don't have the facts to prove it, I believe that Putin wanted to lift the sanctions. He's always wanted to lift the sanctions that were placed on him because of his interfering and encouraging into Crimea. So I believe that they wanted to elect President Trump and Trump, I believe agreed. I will always believe this, that he agreed if he got elected that he would lift those sanctions," Water explained. "He would like to do it. He's not been able to do it, but when they talk about we're just making things up, and he talks about this as a witch hunt, there are too many facts."

"This president will not condemn Putin for hacking into the Democratic National Committee. He will not condemn him for hacking into our election system," she said. "These are facts. 17 of our intelligence agencies have said this. Are these patriots or not? I mean, what do they think about our Democracy being undermined by the President of the United States of America?"

According to the Congresswoman, Republicans continually say the Democrats are pushing this notion because they "don't like him." Her argument is that when Republicans make that claim they "don't really care what happens to this democracy, don't have an appreciation for the Constitution, and the fact that the Constitution gives us the responsibility to impeach when we see this president or any president, who is not good for the country, who is undermining our country, who is putting us in danger, who is aligning himself with a foreign country to interfere with our elections. Those are facts."

#5  Psychology says: The problem with grudges, besides the fact that they are a drag to carry around (like a bag of sedimentized toxic waste that keeps us stuck in anger) is that they don’t serve the purpose that they are there to serve.

The only thing I might add is that you become that bag of sedimentized toxic waste...the face you wear is the face you earned.

Seven indisputable facts about this ‘historic’ impeachment that historians will use to condemn it as ‘folly’
[AMERICANTHINKER] It is often speculated that the real goal of Democrats is to “place an asterisk” next to President Trump’s name. But as the passion of the moment subside and historians take a longer look, here are seven facts that will place an asterisk next to this impeachment, as a monumentally foolish act of political malpractice:

  • First-ever purely partisan impeachment;

  • First-ever impeachment advocated by House members before the president took office and took any official actions;

  • No crime is alleged;

  • The first-ever impeachment brought less than a year before voters speak on the incumbent.

  • Hearings led by a man who brazenly, extensively, and provably lied (Nunes vs Schiff memoranda)

  • The Speaker of the House opposed it, but was bullied by young radicals she called “the Squad”

  • Impeachment hearings drove approval of the target higher

#1  Partisan lite. Several Democrats voted against it or voted present.

Several Democrats in the Senate will do the same.

Pelosi can sit on the articles and not send them but the Senate can go ahead and immediately acquit without them.

#10  Historic? Only in its absurdity and stupidity.

If one looks at this impeachment as a part of a wide-spread DS cover-up, then it is historic in the sense it never happened before in this country.

#12  Last night I sat in cigar bar watching Trump's rally. On the next screen was the impeachment vote. After a few too many, or just enough, it became clear the dual personalities of this nation and just how at risk we are. The Trump followers, to include me, knew the impeachment was a forgone conclusion and was not real surprise. The rally went on like no one really cared about Congress and what was happening, people were reveling in our great nations accomplishments over the last few years. On the left they see him as a derelict and someone that should be in prison. The only time I have ever seen groups of people this polarized is watching a divorce gone bad. Our lifetime elite so called leaders really don't understand what they are driving us to. People are dusting off their guns over this, and Congress is playing this as politics as usual. As you see there were no riots last night, but there was a lot of deep seated thought about what's next. When the Senate exonerates Trump there will be riots. I am afraid they will be met with those that have had enough. This has the potential to really get violent. The left has their propaganda machine in full tilt mode with partial truths, distractions, and a media that is salivating to relive the Nixon era.

All the while, the fragility of our constitution and this republic stand at risk. No matter what the Senate does, next year is going to awful and violent…

Paul Manafort has New York state fraud prosecution DISMISSED because of 'double jeopardy'
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Paul Manafort's state charges in New York were thrown out by a judge on Wednesday in a dramatic court victory for the former Trump campaign chairman.
The double jeopardy was self-evident; you had to look hard to one side or the other not to see it.
He won a claim that the prosecution brought by New York state's attorney general, Letitia James, was invalidated by 'double jeopardy' laws because it overlapped with the federal crimes of which he was convicted earlier this year.
I knew that. So'd the prosecutor.
However Manafort remains in federal custody and is not scheduled for release until Christmas Day 2024. But the judge's ruling opens the way for Donald Trump
...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US...
to set Manafort entirely free by presidential pardon or by commuting his sentence.
