ISIL kidnaps, kills seven in southern Afghanistan: Police
[Hurriyet] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Death Eaters kidnapped and killed seven people, including three women, in the southern province of Zabul, a police official said on Nov. 8, amid heavy fighting in the region between the group and Taliban Lion of Islams.

Groups associated with ISIL have made growing inroads in Afghanistan in recent years, attracting fighters and support away from disenchanted members of the Taliban.

They have been battling government forces and the Taliban in a challenge for supremacy of the Islamist insurgency, and its rise has caused alarm outside Afghanistan, with U.S. commanders citing the movement as a reason to delay troop withdrawals.

Ghulam Jilani Farahi, a deputy police chief in Zabul, said police found the victims, who were kidnapped on Oct. 1 from Rasani village in the Gelan district of the neighbouring Ghazni province.

"Daesh [Islamic State] fighters brutally killed these people and their dead bodies have been carried to Shah Joi district hospital," Farahi said by telephone, using the local name for the ISIL.

The victims were members of the Hazara ethnic group, Farahi said, adding that police were investigating. Photos seen by Rooters showed their throats were cut.

Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
between Death Eaters from the two groups was ongoing in three other districts in the province, with 60 ISIL fighters and 15 Taliban killed, Farahi said.

It was not possible for Rooters to verify the report.

Fierce clashes between rival Afghan Taliban factions
[DAWN] Fierce festivities have erupted between two rival Taliban groups in southern Afghanistan, officials said Sunday, reportedly leaving dozens dead in the first internecine fighting since a breakaway faction of the Islamist movement appointed its own leader.

The skirmish was taking place in southern Zabul province between fighters loyal to the widely-recognised Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor and followers of Mansoor Dadullah, a deputy of splinter-group leader Mohammed Rasool who announced his own faction Tuesday.

"The fighting started from early Saturday morning in Khak-e-Afghan and Arghandab districts of Zabul province. About 60 fighters of Mullah Dadullah and 20 of Akhtar Mansoor have been killed," Ghulam Jilani Farahi the deputy police chief for the province told AFP, adding 30 others were maimed.

The two districts are under Taliban control, and it was unclear how Farahi arrived at his figures.

"The fighters killed are mostly from Mansour Dadullah's group, including imported muscle from Uzbekistan," he said.

Islam Gul Seyal, the provincial governor's front man, confirmed the battle and said fighting was still going on.

Mansoor Dadullah was appointed as second deputy for Rasool, who was named the leader of the splinter group in a mass gathering of dissident fighters on October 3, in the remote southwestern province of Farah, according to an AFP news hound who attended the meeting.

It was unclear whether the new group could rally wide support but its emergence poses a fresh hurdle to potential peace talks with the government.

It also exposes simmering rifts within the movement since the announcement in July of the death of longtime leader Mullah Omar
... a minor Pashtun commander in the war against the Soviets who made good as leader of the Taliban. As ruler of Afghanistan, he took the title Leader of the Faithful. The imposition of Pashtunkhwa on the nation institutionalized ignorance and brutality in a country already notable for its own fair share of ignorance and brutality...
.
Al Ahram adds:
Fighters in a breakaway faction led by Mullah Mohammad Rasool have been joined by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. holy warriors, according to Mohmand Nostrayar, governor of the Arghandab district of Zabul province.

It is unclear how much support there is for Rasool, a veteran Taliban official. A Taliban capo loyal to Mansoor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to news hounds, said Rasool's faction had joined forces with IS gunnies because it didn't have the numbers otherwise.

"It is obvious that Mullah Rasool's group can't face Akhtar Mansoor alone so they need IS. We said that before and now it has been proven," he said.

#1  The death of Mullah Omar was not announced until years after his death. The omniscient CIA stated that it knew of his death all along. The question is: If they did, couldn't they have predicted an internecine struggle would occur in Taleban ranks if it were announced? And eouldn't they have used that struggle to the benefit of the government in Kabul? Or was it the case that under order from Obama they were told to make nice with the Taleban because the White House was trying to ease it back into power in Afghanistan?

Brotherhood members arrested for blocking sewage pipes in Egypt's Alexandria: Interior ministry
[AlAhram] The arrests came amid a nearly week-long storm in Alexandria which has flooded streets and homes

Seventeen members of the outlawed Moslem Brüderbund have been tossed in the slammer
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
on charges of sabotaging sewage systems and other acts of vandalism in Alexandria, the Egyptian interior ministry announced late Saturday.

In a video statement issued by the ministry, the suspects are shown confessing that they are part of the Brotherhood and that they had been coordinating and committing acts of vandalism in Egypt's second-biggest city.

The suspects stated that some of the acts included blocking the sewage pipes by mixing cement inside many of the city's pipelines.

"The suspects destroyed power transformers in order to incite anger among citizens," the statement added.

The suspects are also accused of being behind several minor kabooms that struck Alexandria in the past few days.

Alexandria has been facing a rain storm over the past week which has flooded streets and homes as the city's drainage system and overall infrastructure has not been upgraded in years. The storm also caused power outages in some districts.

The storm has left dozens dead in the city and many more injured, and has resulted in the resignation of the city's governor Hani El-Messeiri.

Before his resignation earlier in October, the governor, in a bid to alert Cairo to looming dangers that could threaten Alexandria, said he had told cabinet that the city has not undergone any infrastructure development projects for 15 years.

Alexandria witnesses flash floods almost on a yearly basis. Last year, floods wreaked havoc on the city for several days.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shouting match, Bart was wondering if fisticuffs would be appropriate at this point...
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi visited the city on Sunday and ordered the allocation of LE1 billion from the Tahya Misr fund for the development of the sewage system in Alexandria and Beheira.

Boko Haram Suicide Bombing Kills Two in Chad
[AnNahar] twin suicide kaboom by women attackers in the flashpoint area of Lake Chad on Sunday killed two people and maimed 14 others, a security source in the Chadian capital N'Djamena said.

The village has suffered repeated attacks by Boko Haram jihadists since they first launched operations in Chad in February.

Iran-backed rebels retake positions in south Yemen
[AlAhram] Iran-backed rebels retook positions in southern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
in a bid to advance on second city Aden, military sources said Sunday as a landmine blast killed 16 soldiers east of Sanaa.
The rebels regained the positions they had lost in fighting in recent months, including a hilltop overlooking the strategic Al-Anad airbase in restive Lahj
... a Yemeni governate located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the stomping grounds on the southern secessionist al-Harak movement
province which borders Aden, they sources said.

The base currently houses Sudanese forces from a Saudi-led coalition that has been battling rebels across Yemen since March.

The rebel deployment near Al-Anad "poses a real danger to pro-government and coalition forces", a military source told AFP.

Yemen's loyalist forces, backed by coalition strikes, supplies and troops, had pushed the rebels out of Aden, now the temporary headquarters of the Gulf-backed government, after a July offensive.

and Shabwa -- were also retaken by the loyalist forces.

Military sources said the rebels also retook Damt, the second city in Daleh province, after besieging it for hours on Saturday and clashing with loyalist troops.

At least 16 people, including nine loyalists, were killed in the festivities and many maimed, the sources said.

Forces fighting in support of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi "were forced to withdraw from the city", one of the sources said.

The rebels also seized a military base in the coastal city of Dhubab, near the Bab al-Mandab strait, following festivities with pro-government troops, another military source said.

Six loyalists and 11 rebels were killed.

Pro-government troops seized Dhubab early last month, giving them effective control of Bab al-Mandab, through which much of the world's maritime traffic passes.

Late Sunday, 16 pro-Hadi soldiers were killed and six maimed when a landmine went kaboom! as their vehicle passed in the city of Marib, east of the capital Sanaa, a military source said.

The blast took place on the road to the Sahn military base northwest of Marib, the source added.

Yemen fighting kills more than 50
More than 50 people were killed in Yemen in the past two days in fighting pitting an Arab coalition against Houthi fighters backed by troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, medical sources and residents said on Sunday.

In Taiz, medical sources said 29 people including eight civilians were killed in clashes in Yemen's third largest city, where relief workers have said fighting has blocked food supplies and left thousands of people in extreme hunger.

About 30 people were killed in fighting in Damt district in Dhalea governorate in the south, residents said.

At least 5,600 people have been killed in seven months of war in Yemen and the United Nations says the humanitarian situation, exacerbated by the Arab coalition's blockade of Yemeni ports, grows worse every day.

The conflict pits the Houthis and army units loyal to Saleh against armed groups who support exiled President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi alongside a Saudi-led Arab coalition. The coalition is fighting to restore Hadi to power following the Houthis' seizure of control of much of Yemen in late 2014 and early 2015, and reverse what it sees as an expansion of influence by Iran.

Several residents said the Houthis and the forces loyal to Saleh had taken control of Damt district, and of Al Qabbayta district in Lahej governorate.

Other residents said without elaborating that anti-Houthi fighters had made a tactical withdrawal from those locations, and were receiving air support from the coalition.

Peace efforts have made only limited progress. All major combatants have publicly agreed to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2216, which calls on Houthi and Saleh forces to withdraw from the country's main cities and surrender arms captured from Yemeni government forces.

But while Hadi and the coalition have previously demanded that this happen before talks begin, the Houthis and Saleh want talks to address the mechanism for implementing Resolution 2216.

"Eleven members of the separatist terror organization [PKK], who were spotted in operations conducted in Hakkari and Semdinli, have been neutralized," the statement issued on the General Staff's website said.

The statement also added that another two PKK bully boyz were "neutralized" in Sirnak and the Silvan district of Diyarbakir province.

Turkish mayor faces trial over "terror propaganda"
[Hurriyet] An indictment has been prepared against a provincial mayor on charges of "promoting terrorism on social media," according to a court statement.

Sirri Sakik, the mayor for the eastern province of Agri, will face a jail sentence for posting comments on Twitter "encouraging and praising the terror of the [outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party] PKK and its affiliate, the Kurdish Communities Union [KCK], against the Turkish government."

According to the Agri Criminal Court, Sakik, who stood for the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) in the March 2014 election, faces up to seven-and-a-half years in prison and a ban on political activity if convicted. A trial is due to take place on Dec. 10.

The indictment was prepared after a criminal complaint was filed by a member of the public.

In a series of tweets posted between Aug. 19 and 22, Sakik said the "Kurds have been fighting for their freedom."

Referring to his forthcoming trial, Sakik told journalists: "This war will not last forever. If it will solve the problems, my punishment, my body, shall be dedicated to Agri and peace."

Turkey: 119 PKK killed, anti-aircraft guns seized in 40-day Hakkari sweep
[Rudaw] Turkish forces killed 119 fighters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and lost six men themselves during a 40-day land and air assault against the rebels in southeastern Hakkari province, the military said Saturday.

Since late July, when attacks shattered a grinding of the peace processor with the PKK that began in 2013, Turkish jets and artillery have been intermittently pounding the PKK in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and northern Iraq.

The official Anadolu Agency (AA) reported local army sources as saying that the operation in Hakkari lasted from Sept. 27 to Nov. 5 and targeted PKK mountain hideouts, seizing or destroying anti-aircraft guns and other heavy weapons.

Military sources claimed that, since after start of talks two years ago, the PKK had "dug the mountains with drilling machines and placed Russian-made DShK anti-aircraft guns, creating several shelters and positions for them."

It said the area was of "strategic importance."

"The recent operation targeted the area from Buzul Mount and Ikiyaka Mountains to Doski Valley in Yuksekova district, where the PKK aimed to declare a 'safe zone' and stronghold for itself," said AA.

During the operation, Turkish soldiers reached remote and difficult mountain hideouts "and destroyed the positions, shelters and caves" of the PKK, the agency quoted military sources as saying.

The operation, which included commando brigades, Special Forces and the air force, was conducted "sometimes in temperatures as low as -15 Celsius at night in steep, rocky areas," AA said.

Several IED bombs planted on the roads as well as materials and chemicals used in their fabrication were seized during the air and land operations, according to AA.

"In addition, five Russian-made DShK anti-aircraft guns, 39 heavy weapons and 10,000 rounds of ammunition were seized," it said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake...
one Turkish soldier was killed Saturday in a mine attack in the Kurdish province of Sirnak which authorities blamed on the PKK.

The military said that the day before in Sirnak one PKK rebel was killed, while four others died in Diyarbakir, in ongoing military operations.

Troops also destroyed 18 handmade bunkers and an ammunition cache, an army statement said.

Turkish forces have been fighting the PKK since a two-and-a-half year cease-fire broke down in late July following a bombing in Suruc.

Ex-CIA Official: RU plane crash adds to the sense ISIS is winning.
[The Hill] Former Deputy CIA Director Michael Morell said Sunday that the crash of a Russian airliner in Egypt last weekend could "add to the perception that ISIS is winning."
If you can't believe Michael Morell, then who can you believe? BTW, there really is no such thing as 'former CIA'.
There have been increasing signs that a bomb planted by ISIS is what brought down the airliner. Morell said intercepted conversations among senior ISIS members is pushing the assessment of the crash from possibly a bomb to "likely."
Yea, we get it Mike. It's sort of a 'Master of the Obvious' moment. The preggy question is, what's to be done about it? This is in your firm's wheelhouse. Answers please. Answers?
"It's going to add to the perception that ISIS is winning, and that has been a key strength of theirs in terms of attracting followers, attracting recruits," Morell said. He added that the crash could also inspire al Qaeda to conduct attacks in an effort not to be overshadowed by ISIS, thinking "we need to do something like this to keep our brand alive. Morell noted an ISIS attack against an international hotel in Tripoli, Libya in January that killed an American.

"I think you're going to see more of that kind of attacking, including attacks against Americans," he said.
He came out of the analytical section. Mind like a steel trap that fellow. He misses nothing!
Others on Sunday also said it is likely that ISIS planted a bomb on the plane that crashed in Egypt.

"All indicators are pointing to the fact that this was ISIS putting a bomb on an airplane," House Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said on "Fox News Sunday."

10-kg bomb defused outside imambargah in Muzzaffargarh
[DAWN] MUZAFFARGARH: A bomb weighing about 10 kilograms was found outside an imambargah on Sunday morning and defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad in Alipur Tehsil of Punjab's Muzaffargarh district.

A majlis for women was taking place at the Markazi Imambargah
...since Pakistain is very religiously correct, Shia Moslems can't call their houses of worship 'mosques,' which are reserved for Sunnis. It's not clear if imambargahs are used for explosives storage like mosques are...
Hussainia since Saturday evening, which ended pre-maturely after the discovery of the explosives conclealed in a milk drum placed outside the place of worship. The Majlis was scheduled to end around noon today.

The bomb disposal squad and additional contingents of police arrived at the site. The explosives were defused by the BDS personnel on the spot.

Fear and panic gripped the area as the incident. Area residents questioned as to how the explosives had managed to reach near the imambargah, which has a heavy security cordon around it and is situated in an area which has been declared as 'sensitive' several times during the past.

District Poilice Officer Muzaffargarh Owais Malik reached the spot and ordered a search operation in the surrounding areas.

No one grabbed credit for the terror bid.

Two Americans and South African killed at police training centre in Jordan
[Guardian] Two Americans and a South African in Jordan have been killed in a shooting at a US-backed training centre for security officers from across the Middle East.

The deaths occurred at King Abdullah police training facility in Muwuaqqar, on the outskirts of Amman, and involved a Jordanian police officer, described as the shooter, who also died during the incident.

Four other trainers -- two Americans and two Jordanians -- were injured in the shooting, according to a government spokesman.

The incident took place on the 10th anniversary of a series of co-ordinated attacks by al-Qaida in Iraq, and seemed to bear a similarity to incidents in Afghanistan in which guns were turned on US trainers.

Surveillance video shows Palestinian woman STABBING Israeli guard
[Right Scoop] One Israeli was lightly wounded in a stabbing attack at the entrance to the West Bank city of Beitar Illit.

The wounded Israeli was a civilian security guard in his 20s, who was posted to the city's main entrance road.

The attacker was identified as a Palestinian woman from Bethlehem, 22-year-old Halawa Alian.

She was shot by the victim after stabbing him, and conflicting reports first suggested she may have been killed. The IDF said she was still being treated by medics who were evacuating her to hospital.

As per police regulations, the woman lay on the sidewalk until a police sapper team confirmed she was not wearing an explosive device. Only then were medics allowed to treat her.

Israeli reports said she was moderately wounded and has been taken to Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem.

A security video from the scene showed the woman approaching the entrance gate to the city, starting a conversation with the guard, then pulling a large knife from her purse and lunging at him.

Israel strikes Hamas site in Gaza after rocket attack
[IsraelTimes] Air force targets facility in south of Strip after Lions of Islam fire projectile into Israel

Israel carried out an air strike in the Gazoo Strip Sunday night in response to a rocket attack earlier in the day, targeting a Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, installation.

The military said it struck Hamas infrastructure in the south of the Strip. There were no immediate reports of Paleostinian casualties.

The rocket had landed in an open field in southern Israel on Sunday night, causing no injuries or damage. Rocket sirens were triggered in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council for the first time in two weeks.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack, but Israel has often said it holds Hamas rulers responsible for any and all attacks from the coastal territory.

The Gazoo border region has suffered sporadic rocket fire, much of it emanating from Salafist groups within the Paleostinian enclave challenging Hamas rule.

Security forces arrest 27 Palestinians in West Bank
[Ynet] Security forces tossed in the clink

Paleo driver shot dead in West Bank after injuring four
A Palestinian driver was shot dead after ramming his car into a bus stop in the occupied West Bank, injuring four people, police said on Sunday, the latest in violence that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will discuss in White House talks.
You can see the headline from Khaleej Times. Imagine the Guardian, Le Monde, and the New York Times...
Since October 1, 11 Israelis have been killed in street attacks by Palestinians motivated in part by agitation at stepped-up Jewish visits to a contested Jerusalem holy site, and by deadlocked US-backed peace-making efforts.

Israeli forces have killed at least 72 Palestinians, including 43 who Israel says were carrying out or about to carry out attacks with knives, guns or cars. Many were teenagers.

Palestinians question whether all of those killed posed a lethal threat and have accused the Israelis of excessive force.
Of course they question it. They're the same people who excuse stone throwing, as long as it is their people throwing the stones...
On Sunday, a Palestinian man rammed his car into a bus stop near the Jewish settlement of Tapuach in the West Bank, injuring four people, an Israeli police spokeswoman said. Paramilitary police troopers shot the man dead, she said.

At the entrance to another settlement, Beitar Illit, a Palestinian woman stabbed and lightly injured a security guard who then shot and wounded her, an Israeli military spokeswoman said. CCTV video circulated by the Beitar Illit municipality showed a woman in Muslim dress speaking to a man wearing private security insignia on a pavement. She reaches into her bag, pulls out a large knife and lunges at him, at which point he rears back and both disappear from the frame.

Briefing his cabinet before setting off for Washington, where he will be hosted by US President Barack Obama on Monday, Netanyahu alluded to Palestinian statehood negotiations stalled since mid-2014 amid feuds over the West Bank settlements and the status of Jerusalem and Hamas-controlled Gaza.

On the agenda of the White House talks, Netanyahu said, is "possible progress with the Palestinians, or at least, stabilising the situation when it comes to them". The Syria crisis and US military aid for Israel will also be discussed, he said.

Though Israeli-Palestinian peace has eluded Obama during his two terms in office, US officials said he will press Netanyahu for steps to keep alive the possibility of a two-state accord.
Don't bend, Bibi, and don't trust Obama...
Ynet reports on the third attack of the day:
Less than two hours after the Beitar Illit attack, a 48-year-old man was stabbed and severely maimed in the town of Nabi Ilyas, near the settlement Alfei Menashe. The town is located near a busy road, and many Jews shop there. During initial questioning, the victim said he had stopped to shop in the town and was attacked by two forces of Evil while standing at a stall.
More from the Jerusalem Post:
An initial investigation has determined that the man stopped at a roadside store outside the Paleostinian village when he was stabbed in the stomach. The assailants expeditiously departed at a goodly pace, and have not been apprehended. Security forces have launched searches in the area.

Early Sunday morning, Border Police officers placed in durance vile
You have the right to remain silent...
a Paleostinian man caught trying to scale a fence into Givat Hameyasdim in Ma'aleh Adumim, a front man for the Judea and Samaria police said. The officers were responding to a call from a local security guard and had gun sex while arresting the man. The man, who police said is from the village of a-Ram, was not harmed in the incident. Police said they are still trying to determine his motives.

Spy Network Working for Israel Busted in South
Given the risks, it's astonishing -- and comforting -- that so many in the region are willing to keep the Jewish nation informed.
[AnNahar] General Security announced on Sunday the arrest of a spy network working for Israel.

It said that it tossed in the calaboose
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
a Syrian, his Lebanese wife, and another Lebanese national in the South on espionage charges.

The detainees confessed to gathering information on various security and military figures for the purpose of liquidation.

They photographed roads and other "sensitive" areas in the South, said the General Security in a statement.

The images and films were then sent to their superiors.

Military Examining Magistrate Judge Saqr Saqr oversaw the investigation and they have since been referred to the concerned judiciary.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend all members of the network.
The Times of Israel adds this perspective:
Reports of the capture of alleged Israeli spies are common in Leb, and a recurring theme in Lebanese media.

In late September, Lebanese soldiers released a video, which they claimed showed a rock concealing an Israeli spy camera in the country's south.

One man was incarcerated
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
in August by Hezbollah for spying for Israel, and was handed to Lebanese security services.

Last December, Hezbollah detained a senior party official on allegations of spying for Israel and "sabotaging security operations" abroad.

Between April 2009 and 2014, Lebanese authorities detained more than 100 people accused of spying for Israel, most of them army members or telecommunications employees.

Apparent Russian raids kill 11 in Syria's Idlib: Monitor
[AlAhram] Apparent Russian air strikes killed at least 11 civilians on Sunday in two towns in Syria's northwestern Idlib province, a monitoring group said.

Nine people, including a child, were killed in strikes on areas in the town of Maaret al-Numan, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Another two women were killed in Saraqib in the same province, the Britannia-based monitor said.

It said both sets of raids were believed to have been carried out by Russian planes participating in an aerial campaign Moscow launched in Syria on September 30.

The Observatory relies on a network of sources on the ground and determines whether strikes were carried out by Syrian, Russian or US-led coalition aircraft based on the location of the raids and the types of planes involved.

Idlib province fell from government control earlier this year and is held largely by the Army of Conquest rebel alliance that includes Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front.

The alliance has been targeted by Russian aircraft and Syrian ground troops just across the provincial border in neighbouring Hama province.

Elsewhere Sunday, at least 10 people were killed in Syrian government air strikes on a town held by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group in northern Aleppo province.

A woman and child were among the dead in the strikes on Al-Bab, which has been held by IS since early 2014, the Observatory said.

Another four people, including a child, were killed in rebel fire on the government-held area of Aleppo city, the monitor said.

Aleppo city was once Syria's economic hub, but it has been ravaged by war and divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east since shortly after fighting there began in mid-2012.

Government planes regularly bombard the eastern part of the city and rebels fire rockets into the west.

South of the city, meanwhile, government troops backed by Russian air strikes seized several villages from rebel forces, state news agency SANA said.

It reported the army had taken three villages south of Aleppo, with the Observatory confirming the advance.

Syrian government troops have launched several ground offensives against rebel forces since Russia began its bombing campaign.

So far, the offensives have registered only modest advances, though the Russian strikes have reportedly boosted morale among government troops.
