Boys who smoke cannabis ‘are four inches shorter'
Dang! I could have been 4" longer!
Boys who smoke cannabis before puberty could be stunting their growth by more than four inches, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that youngsters who were addicted to the drug were far shorter than their non-smoking peers.

And they also discovered that rather than being a relaxing pass time, smoking dope actually makes the body more stressed in the long term.

"Marijuana use may provoke a stress response that stimulates onset of puberty but suppresses growth rate," said study leader Dr Syed Shakeel Raza Rizvi, of the Agriculture University Rawalpindi in Pakistan.

Scientists at the Pir Mehr Ali Shah Agriculture University Rawalpindi in Pakistan studied the levels of certain hormones involved in growth and puberty in the blood of 220 non-smoking and 217 cannabis-addicted boys.

Levels of puberty-related hormones such as testosterone and luteinising hormone (LH) were increased in the cannabis smokers. In contrast, growth hormone levels in the group were decreased.

It was also found that non-smoking boys were on average four kilos heavier and 4.6 inches taller by the age of 20 than the dope smokers.

The researchers also looked at the effect of smoking cannabis on levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, in 10 cannabis addicts.

They found that dope smokers have significantly higher levels of cortisol than non-smokers.

Cannabis is the most widely available illicit drug in Europe, and it's estimated that it's been used by 80.5 million Europeans at least once in their life.

The proportion of 11-15 year olds in England who had used cannabis in the last year fell from 13.3 per cent in 2003 to 7 per cent in 2013, around 250,000 youngsters.

The latest report from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) reveals that the highest prevalence of cannabis use is among 15 to 24-year-olds and is significantly higher among men than women.

Previous studies have looked at the effect of smoking cannabis in adult rats and humans, but this is the first time that the effects have been looked at in prebubescent boys.

Dr Rivzi said the the research may have a wider impact than just health, adding: "Early puberty is associated with younger age of onset of drinking and smoking, and early matures have higher levels of substance abuse because they enter the risk period at an early level of emotional maturity."

The researchers say their findings, presented at the European Congress of Endocrinology in Dublin, will lead to a better understanding of the dangers of drug abuse on growth and development in children.

#7  We're are told one third of blacks live in poverty. Being 12 percent of the overall population (and decreasing daily with the overrun from the south), that means their share constitutes 4 percent of the population. With whites still making up 75 percent of the overall population, 10 percent are categorized as poor. That's 7.5 percent or nearly double the number of blacks in poverty. No set asides, no diversity programs, no 'privilege' involved. Also not a whole of sympathy in the 'white community' for those of us who've lived among them understand why they're poor, primarily the result of choices they make limiting or destroying their opportunities.

Kerry Warns N. Korea of New Sanctions over Recent Provocations
[ALMANAR.LB] US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
warned North Korea Monday of possible fresh sanctions as he slammed Kim Jong-Un's "egregious" leadership with its reliance on reckless provocation and "grotesque" executions.

Speaking in the South Korean capital Seoul, Kerry said the recent test of a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) showed that North Korea had no genuine interest in engaging with the international community.

"Instead, it continues to pursue nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, it continues to break promises and make threats, and it continues to show flagrant disregard for international laws," he told a joint presser with South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byong-Se.

"That is why it is important for us to ramp up international pressure for North Korea to change its behavior," he added, citing the possible use of further "sanctions or other means" to force Pyongyang to change course.

As anti-migrant sentiment rises, Thailand makes arrests
[Dhaka Tribune] Thailand tossed in the slammer
You have the right to remain silent...
the suspected kingpin of a human trafficking network yesterday, the latest bust in a crackdown on people smuggling that has triggered a humanitarian crisis on the region's seas.

The Royal Thai Police said they suspected Patchuban Angchotipan, a former official in the provincial government of the southern Satun province, was the boss of a large human trafficking network.

"In Satun province he is high-level," said Thai national police chief General Somyot Poompanmuang. "He is the chief. He has many subordinates."

Patchuban, whose nickname is 'Kor Tong', has been charged with a range of offences including human trafficking, smuggling illegal migrant workers into Thailand, detention of others leading to bodily harm and holding people for ransom.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, a single surviver held tightly to the smashed prow...
Thailand expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
yesterday at a wave of anti-migrant vitriol on social media, which the government said underlined why it cannot accept any more of the asylum seekers who have been arriving by boat on its shores.

Following an appeal from US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
, Thailand's junta said it would set up temporary shelters for those that did make it ashore, prompting an outpouring of bile on social media from those who do not want migrants to stay.

"Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha is worried about the social media trend right now that shows that the government should not help irregular migrants in the Indian Ocean because of concerns that they will be a burden on Thailand in the long-term," Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd, deputy government front man, said yesterday in a statement.

Vitriol directed at Rohingyas was particularly worrying, said Thai author and social media commentator Kaewmala, who goes by a screen name to protect her identity.

Many in Thailand are calling for Washington to intervene, using the hash tag #USAMUSTHelpRohingya.

"You said we don't have humanity, if you've it, then just let them stay in ur country. Always nosy with other countries. #USAMUSTHelpRohingya," one Twitter user, @IcezPandadang, wrote in English.

#1  FYI the Philippines is offering to in these Rohingyas iff Indonesia or Thailand won't take 'em.

I'm eager to learn the reaction of the Mindanao Moros to this development.

Also, Thailand + China repor are proceeding wid joint contruction or development of the CARAT/KRA CANAL, a move which has Malaysia's + Indonesia's + Australia's panties in a bind.
