Arabia
Hisham Melhem, Al Arabiya: America in the mind of the President.
Excerpt:
"President Obama's soaring rhetoric and eloquently crafted pronouncements on foreign affairs, whether his Cairo speech, his Nobel Prize address, or the West Point speech have never hidden the fact that he is a reluctant practitioner of assertive American leadership in the world, or that his diplomatic forays where mostly hesitant, tentative and half-hearted. He can articulate compassion, but never with passion. Instead of making caution in foreign policy a virtue, he turned it into a vice."
An interesting perspective, well worth the read.

#3  A salient quote:

[Obama] is determined not to allow 'foreign entanglements' to derail his presidency the way Vietnam sapped Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency and undermined his domestic agenda.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Beware Putin'€™s Special War in 2015
[20Committee] Obama's offensive defensiveness here speaks volumes ‐ the self-reference in the third person is revealing ‐ and will be read in Moscow as weakness mingled with taunting. If this is what prep school Ivy League lawyers think passes for tough talk in Chicago, the Chekists in the Kremlin, who are actual hard men with much blood on their hands, will be happy to give lessons to faux-macho poseurs in the West Wing, and in 2015 they will.
ouch
Fairly comprehensive analysis (imho).

#1  The "Cognitive Elites" that run "The West" have marked Russia for destruction---just as they earlier marked Israel for destruction. However, unlike Israel, Russia has both the means and the will to strike back.

#3  Putin is really a fool. Right now the West is in a 70 year battle with Islam that we are losing. France and England will fall within 20 years by virtue of muslim births alone. We are reliving the last war with Islam. But back to Putin. If he just sat tight, focused on his economy, infrastructure, corruption, and military he could fix his broken nation. He could spend the next 50 years developing his nation into the next world power and dominate the world. But alas, he is too petty.

#4  Nonsense, 49 Pan. West is not at war with Islam---if West wasn't ruled by tranis, the cockroaches of Islam would be afraid to stick their heads out of their holes. West (the ideas of individual freedom & responsibility) is at war with Transnational Progressivism---and it's loosing.

#5  Russia has two issues to think about. (1) Their own population numbers aren't looking so great. Putin needs to promote ethnic Russians to have multiple children or they will be swamped as well (2) He needs to wrap up whatever he is doing in Ukraine before the next US election. If he's smart, he'd do so long before so the new President is facing a 'fact' and not a fluid situation they can hope to mess with.

#6  Islam is at war with the West. The so called leaders of the West are in denial about Islam. It is really bad to have an enemy at war with you, and you cannot name your mortal enemy who vows to kill you. It is not O alone who is guilty of this. Our so called European allies are the same.

As far as Russia goes, it has acted like a full grown abused child, invaded by Mongol hordes, Germans, French, et al. Russia has been ruled by despots for generations, and Putin is just the latest. Same old behaviors. Bound to be repeated despite great national consciences, like Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn, Sakarov, et al. Very tragic, but Russia has developed tragedy to an art form.

On Terrorism, Our President Is Tone-Deaf

President Obama is busy fundraising and golfing in California. To date, he has been silent on the Danish terrorist attacks. In has absence, National Security Spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan issued this brief statement yesterday:

The United States condemns today’s deplorable shooting in Copenhagen. We offer our condolences to the loved ones of the deceased victim, and our thoughts are with those wounded in this attack. We have been in close contact with our Danish counterparts and stand ready to lend any assistance necessary to the investigation.

#1  Barack Obama is a supporter of Jihad and is active in eliminating the presence of the United States from any Muslim country (i.e. closing the American Embassy in Yemen, increasing Iran's influence in Iraq, trying to build an Arab Coalition in the M.E.).

VDH: The Roots of Obama's Appeasement
"The architect of appeasement —€” for example, Neville Chamberlain, former prime minister of Great Britain —€” was predictably a narcissist. Chamberlain believed that his own powers of oratory, his insights into reason, and his undeniably superior morality would sway even a thug like Adolf Hitler."
...
"Obama sees a deal with Iran as a way to cement his legacy as a breakthrough statesman. In comparison, the long-term consequences of a nuclear Iran on the security of tiny Israel or on the stability of the largely Sunni Arab Middle East are future and more abstract concerns for others."
Yes, desperately reaching for a piece of 'legacy' in Iran (ValJar and Brennan's idea I suspect, he's doing it for the team). He's doing the same with Cuba as well. Tried it with Vlad, but Vlad and the Russians detest the bugger.... out of colour, if nothing else.

#1  It's not Obama. Obama is just a symptom.
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 02/17/2015 4:29 Comments || Top||

#2  So it is always.

A narcissist, who represents an elite built of narcissists (Oxford Union in Chamberlain's case, the NPR left in Obama's), who doesn't understand the concept of archetypes and has such a high opinion of himself and his chosen narrative that he cannot imagine that anyone might not be swayed by flowery rhetoric. "I am the best debater and negotiator and salesman ever, I can persuade anyone of anything."

As VDH says, malignant narcissism.

There are scores of examples of the autocrat archetype and personality type throughout history. Without exception, they interpret niceness and appeasement as weakness and an incentive to double down on their brutality. The histories are there, the facts are plain, yet there is always, in every age, someone like Chamberlain or Obama representing a class of vain, self-impressed pseudointellectuals who tell themselves that they, of all the humans who have ever lived, are the ones who've finally figured it all out. They never have or will.

#3  Grom is right - its US Progressivism, and its support (via bias, and sometimes outright lies) in the larger press/media, as well as the selective disinformation put out by the academics. Obama is narcissistic idiot at the front of things, with ValJar as puppeteer, and Soros and his ilk doing the real guiding.
Posted by: OldSpook || 02/17/2015 5:54 Comments || Top||

#4  "pseudointellectuals" - They are genuine intellectuals, no point in overstating your case. I have met enough stupid intellectuals in person and in historical readings to come to a realization that the human intellect has its limits.
Recent example, an abrupt change in the "official" recommendation to limit dietary cholesterol intake:
"It's the right decision," said Steven Nissen, chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the famed Cleveland Clinic. "We got the dietary guidelines wrong. They've been wrong for decades."

He noted that only 20% of a person's blood cholesterol — the levels measured with standard cholesterol tests — comes from diet. The rest comes from genes, he said.

"We told people not to eat eggs. It was never based on good science," Nissen said.

It took long enough for the 'good' scientists to change their ways. The "Best and Brightest" -- ain't.

#6  AH, I have dealt with what I would call true intellectuals in my time. People who are well read, well rounded, knowledgeable in many fields, who also have a wide practical streak and much common sense. They are to be distinguished form the likes of Chamberlain and Obama and the bulk of our education-governmental complex, who do not possess that sort of wisdom to go with the knowledge they purport to have.

#7  An intellectual, Anguper Hupomosing9418, exhibits two essential attributes: intellectual curiosity & intellectual integrity.
Look around our "Cognitive Elites": see any signs of either?

Iraq
Graeme Wood, The Atlantic: What ISIS Really Wants
[The Atlantic] The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here'€™s what that means for its strategy--and for how to stop it.
Lengthy, and may have ran before, but worthy I reckon. Should be required reading for everyone in government and the military.

The Odds Against
Max Fisher tweeted, €œpeople who think Christian sectarian militias are the solution to Iraq'€™s problems could stand to read a history of the Lebanese civil war.€ I did, and the history of the Lebanese civil war reports that the Christian communities survived. That'€™s probably not what Fisher meant with the phrase a '€œsolution to Iraq'€™s problems' but survival is no mean feat. Militias aren'€™t usually formed to do good or noble things. They largely exist to maximize the chances that their members will wake to see tomorrow.

Most people in the West are accustomed to the idea that survival is a given, that the continuation of our civilization is a given and the sole remaining problems are ones of refinement. Francis Fukuyama even spoke of the End of History, but in fact extinction is the normal fate of a species. “Ninety-nine percent of all species that ever lived on the planet are estimated to be extinct”. Cultures within a species are even shorter lived. Egyptian hieroglyphics, Mayan script and classical Latin -- once the tongues of mighty empires of the human species -- are now all dead languages. Who knows but NBC might even stop broadcasting someday. Look what happened to Newsweek.

Survival may look easy, but ask yourself if you’ve seen any Roman Legions lately? If Christians -- or anyone -- don'€™t fight to survive in the Middle East the likely result is no more of them. One of the virtues of the Cold War was it made people sit up and realize that survival was by no means assured. In those days presidents and premiers were serious and careful when they talked about nuclear weapons. For 13 days in 1962 it actually seemed like there might not be a human species if things took the wrong turn.

Since the Wall fell we'€™ve hardly given it a thought. You might think our only remaining problems are where to buy a selfie-stick. But the press today is full of the man-bites-dog story that Christians in Iraq are forming militias to fight ISIS. It has the same novelty value as accounts of extremist Buddhist monks in Burma. People in their twenties probably think there is something unnatural about having to fight for one’s existence, like living in a world before computers. But except for the short and rapidly dwindling period of the Pax Americana, staying alive was a perfectly normal occupation.

Olde Tyme Religion
Spengler does Dracula: For the blood is life
Comparative religion is not a statistical exercise: it is meaningless to tally up the victims of Crusaders and compare them to the victims of Islam and quibble about which religion is more violent. Religious war of conquest, that is, jihad, has the same role in Islam that the Lord’s Supper has in Christianity. Christianity (and Judaism) have exercised violence in the past but never sacralized violence. That is unique to Islam among the self-styled Mosaic religions.

...It is important to get the theology right -- not so much to understand the depredations of radical Islam, which hardly are obscure, but to understand what makes the West different. Violence is incidental to Judaism and Christianity and fundamental to Islam. It does us little good to denounce radical Islam if we forget who we are, and how we came to be here.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran punks Barack Obama
"While Washington if focused on the dishonest and sophomoric attempt by Barack Obama to evade any responsibility for, or take any action to remediate the dog's breakfast he'€™s created in the Middle East, it is becoming obvious that Obama is leaving his successor a time bomb. Terror Networks
Krauthammer'€™s Take: ISIS Is a €˜Genocidal Movement Akin to Nazism€™
[National Review] Make no mistake about the seriousness of the threat posed by the Islamic State, says Charles Krauthammer. In the wake of the murders of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians, €œ[ISIS] is not just Islamic radicalism anymore, or Islamic terrorism, which is only a tactic. This is really Islamist supremacy. And in that sense, it is akin to Nazism. That was racial supremacy; here it'€™s Islamist.€

€œThe ideology of ISIS is clearly supremacist, said Krauthammer on Monday'€™s Special Report, “in the sense that anybody who is not Islamic in their understanding is to be either enslaved or eradicated. This is a genocidal movement. You kill Christians, you kill Jews, you kill Yazidis (but you may in certain circumstances enslave them). That'€™s what we'€™re up against, and we have an administration that will not even admit that there’s a religious basis underlying what’s going on.€

That refusal is alarming, said Krauthammer: Churchill saved England and civilization because in 1940 he was able to enlist the English language, and he put it to work on behalf of civilization. What this administration is doing is precisely the opposite. It'€™s sort of deconstructing any resistance with its refusal to acknowledge the obvious.

Government
Ben Carson Suggests Champ Could Be €˜Guilty Of Treason If He Blocks National Security Funding
[Daily Caller] Appearing on Newsmax TV, famed neurosurgeon and potential 2016 Republican candidate said he believes The Champ Obama could be guilty of treason if he continues to block Homeland Security funding for national security.

HOST J.D. HAYWORTH: Let me ask you about the situation that’s unfolding now. The funding for the Department of Homeland Security has not been secured, has not been given by the Congress. The president is moving full-speed ahead with his executive amnesty. If you had advice for the Senate and House leadership, what would it be?

CARSON: I would say break the funding for Homeland Security up into parcels. Don’t present it as a whole bill. That makes it much more difficult for him to stand in the way. And, if he does stand in the way, particularly with things that are vital to the security of this country, then I think we can start talking about treason.

HAYWORTH: Would you repeat that statement?

CARSON: If things are done that are contrary to the security of this country, whoever does them is guilty of treason.
