Al Shabaab Say Behind Two Car Bomb Attacks
[Ynet] Somalia's al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
Islamist group grabbed credit for two car kabooms on Monday targeting African peacekeepers and a government convoy, the first such strikes by the group since it vowed Dire Revenge™ for the killing of its leader last week.

"We are behind the two boom-mobiles driven by mujahideen (fighters)," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, front man for al-Shabaab's military operations, told Rooters after the attacks. At least 12 non-combatants were killed in the first blast that aimed at a convoy of African troops and hit nearby civilian vehicles.

Brotherhood leader, cleric sentenced to 20 years in jail
[Dhaka Tribune] An Egyptian court sentenced a leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and an Islamist cleric to 20 years in prison yesterday for attempting to kill two policemen, part of a government crackdown that has severely weakened the group.

Mohamed El-Beltagy and cleric Safwat Hegazy were convicted of detaining and attempting to kill the policemen during protests against the military's overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi on July 3, 2013.

The demonstrations at Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya were crushed by security forces, who killed hundreds of people.

Egyptian officials, who call the Brotherhood a terrorist group, have repeatedly said that some protesters were armed and fired at police and soldiers.

Two doctors who treated wounded protesters at a field hospital during the clashes, Mohammed Zenati and Azim Mohammed, were sentenced to 15 years each on the same charges.
The ghosts of Raphael Sabatini and Judge Jeffreys are watching this one with interest.
Like many Brotherhood leaders, Beltagy faces several legal cases.

Africa Subsaharan
Cameroon Army 'Kills More than 100 Boko Haram Fighters'
[AnNahar] Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
said on Monday its soldiers had killed "more than 100" Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters during an attempted incursion by the Nigeria-based Islamist turbans, while across the border thousands continued to flee the group's advances.

The Cameroonian army dealt "a severe setback" to Boko Haram during festivities in the north of the country on Saturday, government front man Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a statement read out on state radio.

The statement, which could not be immediately verified, said Boko Haram snuffies fired two shells on the town of Fotokol in Cameroon's northern tip, on the border with Nigeria.

"There were no casualties reported on the Cameroonian side," the statement said.

"Our defence forces responded vigorously with mortar fire aimed at the positions held by units of the Boko Haram terrorist group. The Cameroonian response resulted in over 100 deaths among the aggressors."

The Boko Haram snuffies were pushed back towards the Nigerian border town of Gamboru Ngala, separated only by a footbridge from Cameroon, which they seized over a week ago.

- Exodus -
Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, Agent 49 felt gingerly for his head. It was still there. He had been hoping differently...
panicked residents continued to flee their homes in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
on Monday in fear of Islamist attacks.

The exodus from Mubi, the commercial hub of Adamawa state, began on Sunday after the holy warriors seized the town of Michika around 40 kilometers (25 miles) away the day before.

Boko Haram has seized control of a number of towns in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states in recent weeks, prompting fears the government could soon lose control of the entire region.

"With the fall of Michika into the hands of Boko Haram, Mubi is seen as their next destination," Mubi resident Habu Bala told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The fear of attack grew on Monday after the families of coppers were ordered to evacuate, said resident Muhammad Maishanu.

The Nigerian military has appeared largely powerless to stop the Lion of Islams' advance.

Residents in Michika said airforce jets were circling above the town but were unable to strike because the holy warriors had taken cover in civilian houses.

In Mubi, where thousands have taken refuge in recent weeks, locals were thronging the main bus depot on Monday.

"The increasing large number of passengers far exceeds available vehicles, which has resulted in commotion as people jostle and struggle to secure seats on available buses and taxis. They just want to get out," said Samaila Ado, who works at the coach station.

- 'Capturing everywhere' -
The United States last week said it was alarmed by reports that Boko Haram had captured the Borno town of Bama and the possibility of an attack on the state capital, Maiduguri, 70 kilometers away.

The front man of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, Gideon Obasogie, said he fled the town on Sunday.

"Thousands of others have also left Mubi for Yola for fear of attack. The Boko Haram snuffies are just capturing everywhere," he told AFP.

"The Catholic church in Maiduguri diocese is gradually crumbling. A priest in Michika had to scale a fence yesterday to avoid being killed. He had to pass through some bush and mountains before he finally made it to Yola."

Security fears prompted the indefinite closure of the Adamawa State University in Mubi, according to a university statement.

In October 2012, Boko Haram fighters were blamed for shooting dead at least 40 polytechnic students at their off-campus hostels in the town.

The military has claimed it recaptured Bama in ground and air offensives, killing 50 holy warriors in a battle near the town at the weekend.

Independent confirmation was not immediately available and in an audio message, a purported Boko Haram front man named Abu Zinnira refuted the claim.

The holy warriors threatened to add to their territorial gains, he said.

It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the recording but AFP received the message from the same channels as previous Boko Haram videos.

Bomb blast in Chile wounds 10; government blames 'terrorists'
[REUTERS] A bomb went kaboom! next to an underground train station in the Chilean capital of Santiago on Monday afternoon, wounding at least 10 people, and the government said it bore the signs of "a terrorist" act.

The blast occurred at lunchtime in a fast-food restaurant in a small shopping and eating area next to the Escuela Militar metro station in the affluent residential and shopping neighborhood of Las Condes.

"This is a cowardly act because it has as its objective to hurt people, create fear and even kill innocent people," President Michelle Bachelet said.

"We're going to use all the weight of the law, including the anti-terrorist law, because those responsible for these acts have to pay," she said.

Anti-terrorism laws give prosecutors more powers and allow for harsher sentencing.

Bachelet asked for residents to remain calm, saying, "This is horrible, tremendously reprehensible, but Chile is and remains a safe country."

No group has grabbed credit, and the police said the attack was being investigated.

"This is an act that has all the hallmarks of a terrorist deed," Alvaro Elizalde, the government's chief front man, said in remarks to journalists outside La Moneda presidential palace. "There is no doubt. And it has been carried out with the intention of hurting innocent people."

#2  Rather broad and ignorant brush yer painting with, pilgrim. Especially considering the history:

[T]here have been a number of low-level attacks by anarchist groups in recent years, including one in July, and Monday's blast will put pressure on President Michelle Bachelet to respond at a time when her popularity is slipping and she has her plate full with a reform drive and worsening economy.

A number of explosive devices have been planted close to banks and police stations in Chile in recent years. In the past, one member of an anarchist group has been killed and another injured trying to set off explosive devices, but no bystanders have been hurt.

In July, incendiary devices exploded on an underground train and outside a church without causing injuries. Leaflets were found at the church site seeking "rights" for two Chileans held in Spain and linked to an extremist anarchist group.

This week Chile commemorates the 41st anniversary of the 1973 military coup that removed socialist President Salvador Allende from power. The events of the coup still deeply divide Chilean society, and the anniversary is traditionally a time of protests that often turn violent.

Militants blow up rebuilt school in Bajaur
[DAWN] Suspected holy warriors blew up a government girls' primary school in the border area in Nawagai tehsil early on Monday, officials and local people said.

They said that the incident took place in Kamangra locality, 33 kilometers northwest of Khar.

They added that a group of unidentified miscreants entered the newly reconstructed building of the school and planted a number of bombs in it.

The local people said the explosives went off with a bang, razing the building to ground, but fortunately no one was hurt as the building was empty when the blast struck.

The outlawed Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistain accepted the responsibility for the bombing.

TTP front man Shahidullah Shahid told mediapersons on phone from an unspecified location that attacks on government installations, pro-government rustics and security forces would continue. "We carried out the bombing and we will continue attacks on educational institutions all over the tribal areas," he added.

Local people and volunteers of village defence committee reached the spot soon after the kaboom and cordoned off the area, but miscreants managed to escape the scene.

A local administration official said that the school building was completely destroyed in the kaboom. He disclosed that the same school was also destroyed by holy warriors in 2010 and was recently reconstructed.

The official said the administration launched an investigation to know why the watchman was absent when the holy warriors entered the building.

International-UN-NGOs
Islamic State Fight: Arab States Reluctant to Coalition with US
BEIRUT -- Stitching together a broad coalition to tackle the extremist Islamic State group hinges on overcoming the reluctance of U.S. allies in the Middle East who are deeply frustrated with a White House they believe has been naive and weak on Syria's civil war.
The Arabs don't willingly join up with the weak horse...
Key Sunni Arab states, Saudi Arabia chief among them, have wanted the U.S. to do more to provide robust support to mainstream Syrian rebels in their war against President Bashar Assad. The result is hesitation to answer President Barack Obama's call for a regional front against the Islamic State group, even though it is widely reviled.

The United States is mounting a major campaign to get allies on board. Secretary of State John Kerry will visit the region and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was in Turkey on Monday to lobby the NATO ally.

But it is not always an easy sell.

"Trust is so low, especially in the Gulf region, for Obama's leadership quality and the way he manages foreign policy. I don't think any country is going to put its hand up or neck out by accepting an alliance with the U.S. that easily," said Mustafa Alani, the director of the security and defense department at the Gulf Research Center in Geneva.

That is not to say that Sunni states in the region won't ultimately join the U.S. in the campaign against the extremists who have seized large swaths of Iraq and Syria, or that they don't view the militants as a threat. But it suggests, analysts say, that the U.S. will have to do some convincing -- and likely enticing -- to get them into the fight.

"These countries can offer a lot, but I think any cooperation here is going to be conditional," Alani said. "They are not going to jump in the pool for nothing."

U.S. allies in the Middle East are among the most threatened by the Islamic State group, whose rampage across northern and western Iraq in June rattled officials in capitals across the region. Jordan and Saudi Arabia, both of whom suddenly found Islamic State fighters on their doorstep, have dispatched military reinforcements to their borders to boost security.

On Monday, the Arab League agreed to take immediate measures, either individually or collectively, to combat the Islamic State group and other extremists on the political, defense, security and legal levels. But the member states did not explicitly back American military action.

US airstrikes in Iraq hit Islamic State vehicles
[Ynet] The US military says it launched five more Arclight airstrikes in support of Iraqi government troops and Sunni rustics protecting the Haditha Dam against fighters of the Islamic State group that controls parts of northern and western Iraq.

Central Command says that a combination of US attack, fighter and drone aircraft destroyed or damaged eight armed vehicles, two of which were transporting anti-aircraft artillery near the dam. It says six other vehicles also were struck.

The attacks were carried out overnight Monday into Tuesday morning.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Militant group appoints new leader: Syria
[Pak Daily Times] Syrian: Death Eater group Ahrar al-Sham has appointed a new leader and military chief after their predecessors were killed in a blast on Tuesday, a video statement from the group said.

The kaboom in northwestern Syria killed at least 12 including Ahrar al-Sham's leader Hassan Aboud, according to the hardline group, part of the Islamic Front alliance that has been fighting Islamic State turbans as well as the Syrian army.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group that monitors the conflict, said an kaboom killed 28 of Ahrar al-Sham's commanders, dealing a major blow to the group.

In a video statement, Ahrar al-Sham said that its council had appointed Hashem al-Sheikh, also known as Abu Jaber, as leader and Abu Saleh Tahan as military chief. It pledged to keep fighting against Syrian government forces and Islamic State.

Some 50 of the group's leaders had been gathered at a house when the blast went off inside the meeting, according to the observatory. There has been no claim of responsibility for the blast, which took place in Syria's Idlib province.

Some observers have described Tuesday's incident as a gas attack. Abu Baraa, a rebel figure from a group allied with Ahrar al-Sham, said a doctor who examined the bodies said that there was little visible sign of external injuries.

The doctor saw bodies with frothing at the mouth and fluid coming from the eyes and noses, Abu Baraa said, adding the group had been meeting in was an heavily fortified underground bunker.

"This was a highly sophisticated attack in a location that was very secure," he said. It was not possible to independently verify any of the reports about the incident or the cause of the deaths.

In January another senior Ahrar al-Sham leader, Abu Khaled al-Soury, was killed in a suicide kaboom. Soury had fought alongside al Qaeda founder the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
and was close to its current chief Ayman al-Zawahri. Islamic State, also known as ISIL, denied involvement in that attack after being blamed for it.

Ahrar al-Sham, at one point considered among the strongest hard boy groups in the civil war. But it has been overtaken by the radical State group, which has seized territory in Syria and Iraq and which considers other Death Eater groups as its rivals.

Rebels Reportedly Control Syrian Golan, Entering Lebanon
[ISRAELNATIONALNEWS] Syrian rebels strengthened their hold of the Syrian side of the Golan Heights on Tuesday morning, conquering the mountain Al-Mal in the Quneitra region where they have recently been capturing control from Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
's forces.

In conquering the strategic point on Tuesday, rebel forces killed roughly ten Syrian soldiers according to Arab news sources cited by Walla!, with some reports assessing that all of Assad's forces in the area were killed in the clash.

The victory gives the rebels full control over the mountain located roughly ten kilometers (just over six miles) from the border with Israel.

It also means Syrian rebels have essentially taken control of all of Assad's bases in the Syrian Golan Heights since starting their conquest of the region around two weeks ago.

During the campaign they also took captive 45 UN peacekeepers from Fiji who were kidnapped by Al Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front rebel forces. The rebel forces reportedly said the UN soldiers would "stand trial" under sharia (Islamic law).

Rebel forces on Monday expanded their control even further, as forces of the Lebanese-based terror group Hezbollah reportedly clashed with Syrian rebels in the Qalmoun mountain region, near the Syrian-Lebanese border in the south of Leb.

Security sources told the Lebanese Al Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
paper about the festivities, noting "Hezbollah soldiers were forced to retreat from the area amid night strikes by Assad warplanes in the area."

Hezbollah has sent soldiers in the past to aid Assad in Syria, where a Shi'ite axis has been formed between the Iran-proxy terror group, Assad, and Iran. Rebel forces have been encroaching into Lebanese territory as that policy has come home to roost, with the brutal Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) recently conquering parts of Leb.

The Quneitra fighting has also been spilling into Israel, with an IDF soldier maimed on Monday by stray gunfire. Several Israelis have been maimed by errant shells, with the IDF responding to the attacks last week by hitting a Syrian military position after a mortar shell hit the Golan.

The incident follows the IDF shooting down a Syrian drone just 24 hours prior to the attack, after it strayed into Israeli airspace.

Basement suicide attack kills 28 Syria rebel leaders
Targeted killings come as Syrian troops regain control of villages near military base in central province

An attack on a meeting of a Syrian rebel chiefs in the north of the war-ravaged country on Tuesday killed at least 28 leaders from one group, a monitor said.

"Twenty-eight heads of the Ahrar al-Sham group were killed in an explosion that targeted a meeting tonight... in Idlib province," Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
Ynet adds this little tidbit, before we return to the main article on page 49:
The explosion also seriously wounded its leader, Hassan Aboud, according to a group that monitors the war.

The meeting in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib was attended by 50 leaders of Ahrar al-Sham, said Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Syrian state TV reported that Aboud, the group's leader, had been killed.

#2  Do they still 'tick', Mr. B?

From the movies I've watched, they all appear to be digital with a big bright LED countdown timer attached where everyone can see it (right next to the red, yellow and blue wire cluster).

#4  No, probably no ticki. LED's devices and ticking clocks are the stuff of Hollywood. Probably something along the lines of a Russian version of an M81 igniter with a very, very short fuse. Could have been a cellie igniter as well. Two man operation there, the chap placing the call can also film the blast from a safe distance.
