From the movies I've watched, they all appear to be digital with a big bright LED countdown timer attached where everyone can see it (right next to the red, yellow and blue wire cluster).

No, probably no ticki. LED's devices and ticking clocks are the stuff of Hollywood. Probably something along the lines of a Russian version of an M81 igniter with a very, very short fuse. Could have been a cellie igniter as well. Two man operation there, the chap placing the call can also film the blast from a safe distance.
