20+ Taliban Killed in Attempt to Overrun Coalition Base
Note this is a duplicate; Fred had it a couple hours ago. Always check for a duplicate before posting. Leaving this one for the snarky comments, and Fred's for the snarky in-line. AoS.
KABUL, Afghanistan — A group of 75 Taliban militants tried to overrun a U.S.-led coalition base in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, a rare frontal attack that left more than 20 militants dead, the coalition said.
Sloppy, sloppy. What about the other 55?
A joint Afghan-U.S. force used mortars and machine guns to repel the attack on Camp Anaconda in Uruzgan province, the statement said. "Almost two dozen insurgents were confirmed killed in the attack," the statement said. Two girls and two Afghan soldiers were also wounded during the attack, it said.

In other violence:

The militants attacked police at a checkpoint in Shinkay district in Zabul province on Monday, and the ensuing clash left five suspected militants dead, said Ali Kheil, the spokesman for Zabul's governor. There were no police casualties, he said. Authorities recovered the militants' bodies alongside three motorbikes used in the attack, Kheil said.

Also in southern Afghanistan, Dutch soldiers fatally shot a motorcyclist who approached their convoy and failed to heed warning signals and shots, the Dutch Defense Ministry said.
Need to pay attention in Drivers Ed class!

#1  Unfortunately, about 2/3 of the attackers seem to have escaped. What's the normal wounded/killed ratio in fights like this? If it's 2:1, then pretty much all the attackers should be injured - let's hope for sepsis.

Someone still reading from the Dreaded Taliban Spring Offensive Playbook? Rumor has it they are going to do a sequel called "Die Faster". A much pithier title, IMHO.

Winter is coming on soon. The snow flies in those mountains by early September. The Talibunnies are now attempting to reduce their number in order to have enough food to eat over the winter.

Taliban Launch Frontal Attack on Base
GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- A group of 75 Taliban militants tried to overrun a U.S.-led coalition base in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, a rare frontal attack that left more than 20 militants dead, the coalition said in a statement.
"We will destroy the infidels with a frontal envelopment! They will be taken completely by surprise!"
"Brilliant, Commander Mahmoud! Brilliant!"
The insurgents attacked Firebase Anaconda from three sides, using gunfire, grenades and 107 mm rockets, the coalition said. A joint Afghan-U.S. force repelled the attack with mortars, machine guns and air support.
"Cheeze, Cap''n! I can''t believe they''re that stoopid!"
``Almost two dozen insurgents were confirmed killed in the attack," the statement said. Two girls and two Afghan soldiers were wounded during the fight in Uruzgan province, it said. A firebase like Anaconda is usually a remote outpost staffed by as few as several dozen soldiers. ``The inability of the insurgent forces to inflict any severe damage on Firebase Anaconda, while being simultaneously decimated in the process, should be a clear indication of the ineffectiveness of their fighters," said Army Capt. Vanessa R. Bowman, a coalition spokeswoman.
"Commander Mahmoud! Why do the hated infidels call the approach to their firebase a 'kill zone'?"
"Aaaaaiiiieeee!"
"Commander Mahmoud? Commander?... Dang. That hadda hurt. Briefly."
A direct attack on a U.S. or NATO base by insurgents on foot is relatively rare.
There's a reason for that. It's relatively stoopid, too.
More often insurgents fire rockets at bases and run away flee. Military officials say that Taliban fighters know they can't match Western militaries in a heads-up battle, which leads the insurgents to more often rely on roadside and suicide bombs.
On the other hand, the Pak Talibs have regular successes against the Pak army, which they confuse with real soldiers.

Update: 2 with pipe bombs near Navy base charged
Don't sound like fireworks to me...
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - Two men found with several pipe bombs in their car near a Navy base were charged Monday with possession of an explosive device, authorities said.

A joint state-federal investigation was under way to see whether there was any terrorism connection but no link had been found yet, said FBI spokeswoman Denise Taiste. The Navy base is the site of a brig where enemy combatants have been held.

Ahmed Abda Sherf Mohamed, 24, and Yousef Samir Megahed, 21, both students at the University of South Florida in Tampa, were driving through the area on Saturday to vacation at a North Carolina beach for Mohamed's birthday, their defense attorney said.

"They admitted to having what they said were fireworks. Based on the officer's judgment at hand, based on what he had seen, we judged it to be other than fireworks," Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said. Mohamed, 24, said he made pipe bombs from items he bought at Wal-Mart, according to an affidavit with his arrest warrant.
See! Wal-Mart! How American can you get! Apple pie! Ice cream! Joe Dimaggio!
Defense attorney, Dennis Rhoad, said the men have a reason for having the devices and it would become clear in later court hearings.
Sure. Everybody's got a good reason to have a coupla pipe bombs lying around...
"The defendants deny the allegations the state and the sheriff have made against them," Rhoad said.
Wayull, this heah could be mah lucky day. I hears these heah Arab fellers is all supposed ta be rich...
Prosecutor Scarlett Wilson asked for high bond, which was set at $500,000 for Mohamed and $300,000 for Megahed, because she said the men were dangerous and a risk to flee. Mohamed is a native of Kuwait and Megahed is Egyptian, the sheriff said. Both are in the country legally.

Before details about the pipe bombs were released, the executive director of a civil rights organization for Muslims in Tampa criticized the arrest as racial profiling, an accusation South Carolina police denied. "Definitely this is not related to terrorism," said Ahmed Bedier of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
They're not in your database, Ahmed?
"Had these been two good ol' boys from South Carolina driving through and speeding — and even if they did have some fireworks — nobody would have been arrested," Bedier said.
Slur the rednecks, Ahmed. Good move with a couple of your boys in the local jail. Maybe the Council on Redneck-Islamic Relations might be giving you a jingle?
The two men were stopped for speeding Saturday night on U.S. Highway 176 near Goose Creek, which is the site of the Naval Weapons Station and houses the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held. They were heading west, away from Goose Creek, when they were pulled over about seven miles from the sprawling Navy facility, police said. Officers became suspicious because the men quickly put away a laptop computer and couldn't immediately say what they were doing in the area or where they were going, DeWitt said.
Well, let's see what's on this heah little bitty computer thang ya got heah, boys...
A deputy then found what he thought were explosives in the 2000 Toyota Camry and called the bomb squad. Technicians confirmed the devices were pipe bombs and destroyed them, according to sworn statements in the arrest warrants.

Authorities closed a mile-long stretch of the highway Saturday night and didn't reopen it until about 4 a.m. Sunday.

University spokesman Ken Gullette said Mohamed is a civil engineering graduate student who came to the school in January. He earned his undergraduate degree in Cairo and was in the country on a student visa.

Megahed, who has permanent resident status in the United States, is an undergraduate and has been at the university since 2004, but has not declared a major, Gullette said.

Neither has ever been arrested by campus police or disciplined by the university, Gullette said. Both were enrolled in classes this summer. Gullette said the university is cooperating with authorities.

If convicted of the felony charge, the men would face from two to 15 years in prison.

#2  Maybe if they were really local boys they could have gotten away with speeding, but Florida tags, where they were snagged, forget it. Anybody from my mother to Calypso Louie would have landed in the same place as these Muzzie boys.
The local boys might well have gotten off on the pipe bomb charge too, unless Fish & Game warden got involved - it might mess up Bubba's 'All you can eat' catfish fry. But nobody's going to buy the 'fishing supplies' story from a Mohammed, unless he's fishing the Tigris.

Hand crank telephone? Seine net? Frog gig? Burlap sacks? If none of the above were in their car, you can rule out "fishin' Southern style". Oh, and BTW, pipe bombs are NOT "fireworks", even if only packed with black powder and an accelerant. I'd find them guilty of gross stupidity, if nothing else. A lot depends on what they find on that laptop, which I'm sure is being perused quite extensively.

US: Al-Haramain sues to get off terror list
A former Islamic charity in Oregon sued Monday to get itself removed from the US government's list of groups suspected of supporting terrorism. The government has not given the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation "any formal statement of reasons," nor specified the conduct for which the group's operations were effectively shut down, said the group's lawsuit filed in US District Court.

In February 2004, the Treasury Department ordered banks to freeze assets and property of the group, saying it was a branch of a large Saudi charity accused of funneling money to al Qaida. In September 2004, the Treasury Department formally designated the group as suspected of supporting terrorism, saying a federal investigation "shows direct links between the US branch and Osama bin Laden." At the time, the department said humanitarian contributions were diverted to Chechen rebel leaders affiliated with al-Qaida.

The Al-Haramain lawsuit said the group had shown that its participation in a Chechnya project "was undertaken exclusively for humanitarian purposes, and had nothing to do with terrorist or violent activities."

CIA orchestrated slaying of Chinese in Pakistan: Parliamentary Secretary
ISLAMABAD: CIA had orchestrated slaying of Chinese nationals in Pakistan, parliamentary secretary for defence Tuesday said in National Assembly session.

Taking part in foreign policy debate in the house, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Syed Tanveer Hussain said a false love affair with the United States should be curtailed. He also called for better relations with Iran, Russia and China.

“The aid that forces us to treat our own people brutally should be spewed out,” he said.

He also called for raising slogan of Jihad to take revenge from America.

He said the United States and India have similar interests in Kashmir and a conspiracy being hatched to make the region autonomous.

He said the Kashmir issue wouldn’t be resolved on table adding that allowing free entry to Jihadis in Kashmir can resolve the issue within one month.

Indian PM accepts Bush ranch invite

New Delhi, Aug. 7: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has accepted an invitation from United States President George W. Bush to visit his ranch in Texas, but the dates have not been finalised, the spokesman of the ministry of external affairs said.

The spokesman said on Tuesday: "The Prime Minister has accepted the invitation. However, the dates are yet to be fixed." He was responding to a question regarding reports about an invitation to Prime Minister Singh to undertake a bilateral visit during which talks would be held at President Bush’s private Crawford ranch in Texas.

The Prime Minister is unlikely to travel abroad till September 10 because of the Monsoon Session of Parliament and his visit to the US is expected in the third week of next month.

While Zhang Fei is likely most spot on, I still like john frum's idea better.

America has yet to pay proper respect for the post 9-11 parliament attacks in India. If we are so dedicated to global democracy, the attacks in New Delhi should have grounds for nuclear war. Had such an assault occurred here in America, significant tracts of the MME (Muslim Middle East) would already be smoking glass. All this time, no-effing-one in America has recognized India's restraint in holding back from turning Pakistan into a glow-in-the-dark parking lot. India, along with Israel, both deserve high praise for their sense of moderation. Their Islamic foes exhibit no such courtesy and deserve even less in return.

Lashkar militants sentenced for possessing explosives
NEW DELHI: A court here on Monday sentenced two Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing arms and explosives. Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur also slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000 on each of the convicts -- Shahid Ahmed Bakshi, a resident of Ahmedabad, and Farhan Ahmed Ali, a resident of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. The court had held them guilty on July 30 under various provisions of the erstwhile Prevention of Terrorism Act pertaining to unauthorised possession of arms, ammunition and explosives.

The accused had also been charged with conspiring to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and some "Sangh Parivar" activists. However, the court acquitted them of the charges as the prosecution could not prove them.

According to the prosecution, the accused were arrested at Nizamuddin here on August 30, 2002, with 4 kg of RDX, two detonators and a Chinese-made pistol along with magazine and 15 live cartridges. It had alleged that the accused had conspired to murder Mr. Modi and others to take revenge for the riots in the aftermath of the Godhra incident. They were also assigned the task of carrying out terrorist attacks in the country, the prosecution had alleged. The court had also absolved the duo of the charges of conspiracy to wage war against the State for want of evidence.

Pakistan (said to) detains top fugitive (Dawood Ibrahim) wanted by India
NEW DELHI -- Pakistan has detained India's most wanted fugitive Dawood Ibrahim, the alleged mastermind of deadly bomb blasts in Mumbai, a report said Tuesday.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency took the elusive mafia chief and two trusted lieutenants into custody Thursday, the Times of India said, citing Indian intelligence sources. "Sources in Quetta confirmed the detention," one intelligence officer said in the report, referring to the capital of the Pakistani province of Baluchistan. "Dawood and the others have ceased to be of much use to the Pakistani establishment," the unnamed senior officer said.

Dawood was being kept in a safe house on the outskirts of Quetta, said the report, which could not be independently confirmed. The paper said that prodding by the US, which in 2003 branded Dawood a "global terrorist," had led to the move to apprehend him.

The son of a police constable, Dawood has run an empire steeped in drug trafficking, extortion, and ransom killings for more than two decades. His gang is said to be deeply feared in Bollywood, India's film industry. Many actors, directors, and producers have been linked to Dawood. He is the key accused in a string of blasts that rocked India's financial capital, Mumbai, in 1993, killing at least 300 people and wounding more than 1,000.

Dawood fled India in the early 1980s and is believed to have assumed many nationalities and used a variety of hideouts, including in Dubai and the Pakistani city of Karachi. He is one of 20 people India wants Pakistan to hand over in the wake of a December 2001 attack on the Indian parliament, which New Delhi said was carried out by Pakistani-backed Islamic militants. Pakistan had previously often denied Dawood was hiding on its territory.

Pakistan Forces Destroy Militant Hideout
MIRAN SHAH, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistani troops backed by helicopter gunships and artillery destroyed a militant hide-out in North Waziristan on Tuesday, the army said, in what appeared to be its toughest military action in the lawless border region after a month of escalating violence.

Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad said the security forces targeted the militant compound in Daygan, a village about 10 miles west of Miran Shah - the main town in North Waziristan - after receiving ``credible intelligence that militants were present there.''

However, he said he had no information about how many militants were killed in the assault. The compound had been ``knocked out,'' but security forces were still firing artillery, he said.

A local security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists, said the militants retaliated against the army action and both sides were using light and heavy weapons.

Residents in Miran Shah could hear the boom of artillery, and said a stray mortar struck a home, wounding three civilians, including two Baby Ducks children.

The security official confirmed that some weapons had hit a home in Daygan, and that three or four people had been wounded.

The assault appears to be the toughest military action since troops that were withdrawn from key checkpoints under a controversial peace deal with pro-Taliban militants in September 2006 were redeployed to North Waziristan about a month ago - prompting militants to pull out of the deal and resume attacks.

President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, a key ally of the United States in its war on terror, is under pressure from Washington to crack down on militants after U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that the peace deal had allowed al-Qaida to regroup.
"Send for more smoke and mirrors!"
"Yes, Effendi!"
Violence has surged in Pakistan, particularly on its northwestern frontier with Afghanistan, since an army raid of Islamabad's pro-Taliban Red Mosque in early July. In all, more than 350 people have died in suicide bombings and clashes between militants and security forces.

Tuesday's raid came a day after Pakistan's foreign ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said that al-Qaida and the Taliban had no safe havens in the tribal regions.

Pakistan says it has 90,000 troops deployed at the border to combat militancy and attacks on Western and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.

Militants kill 'gang leader' in Darra Adam Khel
Suspected pro-Taliban militants on Monday shot dead an alleged leader of a gang after he ignored warnings to stop criminal activities in a tribal area, officials said.

Ameer Sayed was driving his car when he was ambushed by armed men on motorcycles in Darra Adam Khel, a town in a semi-tribal area bordering Peshawar, a local official told AFP. The unidentified attackers bravely fled after shooting him dead, the official said, on condition of anonymity. Residents said Sayed, 45, had been warned by militants that he would be killed if he did not stop activities that allegedly included car jacking, drug smuggling and kidnapping for ransom.

20kg explosives from oil tanker seized
Security forces recovered 20 kilograms of explosives from an oil tanker plying between Dara Adam Khel and Mir Ali town in North Waziristan on Monday, according to a military press release. "An oil tanker was stopped for checking in Frontier Region Bannu on Monday morning. On search, 20 kilograms of explosives were recovered from the hidden compartments of the oil tanker," the statement read. Dara Adam Khel town is a semi-autonomous tribal region 35 kilometres south of Peshawar well known for arms and explosives production. The statement said "miscreants," a reference to tribal militants, could have used the explosives to prepare suicide jackets and improvised explosive devices for insurgency-related activities. "Timely action by security forces and intelligence agencies have managed to avert a major terrorist action by the miscreants." The driver and 'conductor' of the oil tanker have been taken into custody and are under investigation, the statement said. Meanwhile, unidentified militants on Monday fired a rocket and launched an attack with automatic weapons on the Banda check post in Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan. Security forces retaliated, but no loss of life was reported.

Taliban-jirga talks fail in Bajaur Agency
Talks between the Taliban and a tribal jirga about the law and order situation in the Bajaur tribal region failed on Monday, as the government refused to release arrested militants. 'The four-day talks did not yield desired results as both sides stood by their stated positions,' a local official and tribal elders from the jirga, who wished not to be named, told Daily Times.

Taliban leaders did not accept responsibility for attacks on government interests, and demanded release of arrested people, jirga member Malik Abdul Aziz told reporters in Khar after the talks with militants failed. Bajaur Political Agent Shafeerullah told jirga members the government would not meet the Taliban demand for the release of people 'involved in attacks on state interests and murder of security forces'. The local administration had formed a 140-member tribal jirga to hold talks with Taliban leader Maulana Faqir Muhammad. He did not take part in the talks and his aides represented him. 'We abide by the March 26 peace deal (with the government) and have not carried out attacks the local administration believes we are responsible for, and instead it should take action against breakaway group led by Dr Ismail,' the Taliban negotiating team, including Maulana Syed Muhammad, told the jirga.

Shafeerullah warned tribal elders of action if local tribes did not meet territorial responsibility by handing over suspects who attacked government buildings and forces in their areas. 'We will take action against elders if attacks on government buildings and forces continue,' the political agent said. 'The Taliban are on one hand denying their involvement in attacks and on the other there has been an increase in attacks on state interests. You tribal elders will have to tell who these people are who are attacking the state interests. Finding a solution to this problem is you people's job,' the chief administrator told the Bajaur elders. He pressed them to come up with a solution by August 13 'otherwise the situation can take an ugly turn any time'.

Malik Abdul Aziz said the jirga would open talks with the Dr Ismail group on Tuesday (today).

AP adds: Clerics were trying on Monday to broker a ceasefire between pro-Taliban militants and security forces in restive North Waziristan, where a military post came under rocket attack overnight, sparking a gunbattle, officials said.

Meanwhile, militants distributed pamphlets in the bazaars of Miranshah, expressing hatred of security forces. Titled 'Taliban's message to a missile,' the pamphlet, written in Urdu, blamed the army and paramilitary troops for 'spilling the blood of Muslims.'

'Go and explode on the head of a soldier or a spy. See, make no mistake, go straight and target the enemies of Islam, the dogs of army and paramilitary,' it said.

#1  'Taliban's message to a missile,'

This technique is surely superior to satellite guided bombs and the like. Even in a crowd the missile will know which man is the spy. No collateral damage - whoever is killed or hurt is the spy, the fact that they were hit proves it. Bullets will receive similar instruction in the coming days.

Blast injures 3 PAF officials
A blast in the Banamarhi police precincts injured three Pakistan Air Force (PAF) personnel on board a PAF bus on its way to the Peshawar airbase on Monday, sources said. The bomb exploded at around 7:30am near the Gulshan Rehman colony, and injured Squadron Leader Mushtaq, Lance Nike Mohammad Ayaz and a driver, locals told Daily Times on condition of anonymity. PAF Deputy Spokesman Mohammad Tariq, however, said two PAF airmen had been injured. He said the blast was caused by a homemade-explosive device that had been planted in an uninhabited room on the roadside. He said the blast caused pieces of bricks to hit windows of the PAF vehicle, injuring two airmen. Tariq rejected reports that unknown people had hurled a grenade at the bus. He also refuted the reports that Mushtaq and Ayaz had been injured in the blast. ?PAF officials were not targeted. It was dynamite that exploded in an empty room,? he added. Banamarhi police officials told an entirely different story, saying that the locally made bomb went off at around 7:30am in uninhabited rooms near Gulshan Rehman colony. They said the blast injured two civilians on board a bus. ?We have confirmed that two civilians Mohammad Hussain of Kohat and Zainullah of Surezai in Peshawar have been injured in the blast,? Banamari Additional Muharar Halim said.

Judge charges 13 in Mumbai train blasts
Thirteen men suspected to be behind the deadly train bombings that rocked India's financial capital last year were charged yesterday in a Mumbai court. Police say the 13 men, along with 15 others still at large, plotted and carried out the attacks, setting off a series of bombs that ripped apart seven coaches during evening rush hour, killing 187 people and injuring 824 others.

According to the charges, the men were members of the Pakistani-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group and of the Students Islamic Movement of India, or SIMI, a banned group based in northern India. All 13 of the men are Muslim Indians, while 10 of the 15 wanted are from Pakistan. Two others allegedly involved were killed. One died in the bombing while another was shot dead by police.

Conspiracy
The men were charged with conspiring to carry out sabotage, to use explosives to cause large scale loss of life, terrorising railway commuters, disturbing harmony, promoting enmity between religions and disrupting public transportation. Reading the charges Judge Mrudula Bhatkar said the men instigated young Muslims "in the name of religion to resort to terrorist acts." All 13 said they were not guilty but refused to recognise the court. "You cannot do us justice. We don't have faith in your legal procedure. Transfer our case," said Ehtesham Siddiqui, one of the accused.

Iraq
Shi'ite militiamen blamed in attacks on U.S. troops - Over 70%
Shi'ite militiamen with Iranian weapons and training launched nearly three-quarters of the attacks that killed or wounded U.S. forces last month in Baghdad, stepping into the void left as Sunni insurgents have been dislodged, a top U.S. commander said Sunday.

Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno didn't provide a total number of militia attacks. But he said 73% of the attacks that wounded or killed U.S. troops last month in Baghdad were launched by Shi'ite militiamen, nearly double the figure six months earlier.

Iran has denied U.S. allegations that it is fueling the violence in Iraq, and the Americans and the Iranians have agreed to set up a committee to deal with Iraqi security issues.

Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr agreed to pull his Mahdi Army fighters off the streets as the security crackdown began Feb. 12. But some members of his group broke away.

ISOF DETAIN SUSPECTED AL-QAEDA EMIR

In a separate operation Aug. 5, Iraqi Special Operations Forces, with U.S. Special Forces acting as advisors, detained a suspected al-Qaeda emir in Radwaniyah.

The alleged Sunni extremist commander is believed responsible for conducting attacks against Coalition Forces and Iraqi Security Forces southwest of Baghdad. Another suspected extremist was also detained. Both individuals are currently being held for questioning and further investigation.

No U.S. or Iraqi Forces were harmed in either operation.

Tribes Reconcile in Diyala
TIKRIT, Iraq, Aug. 3, 2007 — Eighteen paramount tribal leaders representing 14 of the major tribes in Diyala province, Iraq, swore on the Quran and signed a peace agreement unifying the tribes in the battle against terrorism during a meeting at the Baqubah Government Center Aug. 2.

The meeting, led by Ra’ad Hameed Al-Mula Jowad Al-Tamimi, governor of Diyala; Staff Maj. Gen. Abdul Kareem, commander of Iraqi security forces (ISF) in Diyala province; and Col. David W. Sutherland, commander of coalition forces in Diyala, was attended by sheiks representing three Shiite tribes, 11 Sunni tribes and 60 of Diyala’s 100 sub-tribes.

“Let’s build this tent and live under it like one family – all the tribes and all the people of Diyala. You have to be one family,” said Ra’ad Hameed Al-Mula Jowad Al-Tamimi, governor of Diyala, who stressed the importance of the sheiks in the country’s efforts towards stability and security.

“Problems can be solved by the sheiks because they have great influence on their tribes,” Ra’ad continued, stating the tribes are the key to success in Diyala. “Those tribes that do not choose to participate in the way ahead for a secure Diyala will be left behind,” said Sutherland as he spoke to the tribes. “Don’t say, ‘I need,’ until you say, ‘I’ve done.’ Do for your families, do for your tribes, and do for Diyala.”

“The tribal leaders can change the hearts of the people,”
said Sheik Mahmood Abdul-Shinba Al-Hassani. “Instead of cheering for the terrorists driving through the streets, the people will cheer for the Iraqi security forces in the streets.”

“The terrorists are not that many,” said Sheik Adnan Abdul-Mehdi Al-Anbaki. “We have to stand together and we need to kill the terrorists. We know who they are.”

After discussing tribal differences and why it is important to unite, the sheiks signed a reconciliation agreement and swore over the Quran as a promise to uphold the agreement. As stated in the Quran, “And hold fast, all together, by the rope which God (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves,” the sheiks agreed to ten conditions.

Some conditions of the peace treaty include ending tribal conflicts and attacks; cooperating with the ISF; fighting al-Qaida, militia groups and other terrorist organizations; working with the security forces to eradicate corrupt members; returning displaced families to their homes; reporting and removing improvised explosive devices; and respecting all sects, religions and women’s rights.

“This is the time my government needs me,” said Sheik Mazen Rasheed Al-Mula Jawad Al-Tamimi, paramount sheik for the Tamimi tribe. “Why should I stand by and watch when my people tell me everything – the good and the bad?” “We have to consider the fact that local people are helping us. We have to work with them hand-in-hand and go forward,” Ra’ad said. “If anyone is standing in our way as an obstacle, then we will have to take that obstacle away from our path.”

Mostly Goods News From the State Department on Iraq
Highlights. More details at link, including a graphic showing electricty demand since 01/10/04 has doubled, while supply has been relatively constant. Remember the article a few days ago about the electrical grid collapsing?

1. Defeat the Terrorists and Neutralize the Insurgents
The number of caches found and cleared continue to grow, with the number seized in the first six months of 2007 greater than all of 2006 combined. In the last week alone, Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces seized more than 120 weapons caches.

Leads and tips from Iraqi citizens are responsible for leading to the discovery of many of the caches. The current number of tips received per month, approximately 23,000, is nearly four times as many as the number from this time last year.

2. Transition Iraq to Security Self-Reliance

Iraq’s 25,000+ member National Police is in the second of a four-phase transformation program to help them become a proficient, loyal law enforcement organization that serves all of Iraq’s citizens. The first phase of the program, initiated by General Casey in 2006, was an overall look at operations.

The second phase, being conducted now and due to conclude October 10, is a month-long training program for each national police brigade. About 75% of the curriculum teaches students how to perform law enforcement duties in a democracy, while the other 25% focuses on tactical skills, such as patrolling, cordon-and-search operations, and conducting checkpoints.

3. Help Iraqis to Forge a National Compact for Democratic Government

All six ministers from Iraq's largest Sunni bloc tendered teir resignation from the Prime Minister’s coalition government August 1 following a month-long spat. Spin alert The decision by the Tawafuq Party effectively ends any claim by the Shiite-dominated coalition to be a government of national unity, and strikes another blow at Iraq's already faltering program of national reconciliation.

4. Help Iraq Build Government Capacity and Provide Essential Services

The Governor of Karbala hosted a regional municipality conference focused on improving service delivery with the participation of delegations from Wasit, Najaf, Diwaniyah and Babil. The delegations presented best practices on public works and established a regional municipality coordination committee.

5. Help Iraq Strengthen Its Economy

The Council of Representatives (CoR) approved four World Bank loan agreements July 29 for highway reconstruction, hydro-electric power plants in Dokan and Darbandkhan, education projects, nd electricity-related reconstruction. These agreements were signed by the Minister of Finance in April, approved by the Council of Ministers July 3.

6. Help Iraq Strengthen the Rule of Law

In Baghdad, the Iraqi government has established a well fortified compound to shelter judges and their families and secure the trials of some of the most dangerous suspects. The Rule of Law Complex, as it is known, is in the Baghdad neighborhood of Rusafa and incorporates the existing Baghdad Police Academy and Rusafa Jail. Since beginning operations in May, it has received over a thousand pretrial detainees from over-crowded Iraqi facilities, held judicial reviews of 1,470 cases, and begun holding trials. To date, it has tried 43 suspects. The Ministry of Finance has signed a $48.8M Letter
of Offer and Acceptance, committing the GOI to fund the operations of the Complex fully from August 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007.

7. International Support for Iraq

Saudi Arabia pledged August 1 to explore opening diplomatic relations with the Shiite-led government in Iraq, an endorsement long sought by the United States. The Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, told the visiting U.S. Secretaries of State and Defense that his country would soon send a diplomatic mission to Baghdad to "explore how we can start an embassy in Iraq.“ Saudi Arabia has had strained relations with the Iraqi government of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki and has not hidden its suspicions that Maliki does not have the interests of the Sunni minority of Iraq at heart.

8. Strengthen Public Understanding of Coalition Efforts and Public Isolation of the Insurgents

Iraqi television channels broadcast images of united Iraqis celebrating the national soccer team’s win over Saudi Arabia, earning the country’s first Asian Cup title.

#2  Yes we do have "good news" but there is also "bad news" on the political front both there and here. With Maliki there is no reconciliation leadership nor is there any unification champion. They have to make that attempt and make it very public. Here the dhimmicrats and shaky Republicans will use any weakness in the military/political strategy to call it quits (for real by closing the purse). It was also very "french" of the Iraqi Parliment to go on vacation in August the month before Petraeus progress report. I am starting to believe that the Sunnis and Shias deserve each other. Let Iran and Saudi Arabia fight it out while we watch and lick our lips at the spoils we can pick clean after its over with. Just too damn bad we will tank our economy without their damn oil.

Bread and a Circus Part 2 (Yon)
Teasers. Go read the whole thing. Lots of pictures and lots of video links.

The American press that flooded in for the kinetic fighting in Baqubah left when the shooting stopped. Their interest waned for covering these aspects of counterinsurgency. They were gone and missing the real story. Nobody was even watching, but this play was not for the Americans journalists, it was for the Iraqi people. So with the drivers frightened and ready to abort, the mission could do worse than merely fail, it could backfire. (Like the entire war.)

The story in the Iraqi press might be that after 10 months of no food shipments to Baqubah, Arrowhead Ripper is launched, and….food shipments do not resume, and Baqubah and Diyala Province are abandoned by the Iraqi government in Baghdad. This would be a terrific media victory for al Qaeda and its push to deepen the civil war here.

Two officials were engaged in a conversation about how al Qaeda was able to infiltrate trouble spots in Iraq so effectively. The illuminating exchange revealed how much of the strife in Iraq is rooted not in religious fervor, but in greed. Greed for power, greed for money. The video camera was running.

Watch this excerpt on videotape (at link)

When the convoy finally arrived in Baqubah, the local media was there, along with Provincial leadership, and LTC Johnson gave full credit to the Mayor and other leaders right there in front of the Iraqi media. It was straight out of a Bruce Willis movie where Johnson saves the day, then watches from out of the spotlight as the Mayor and Governor get all the credit. Nobody mentioned Tonto.

Other “Information Operations” were under way to not only show the people that food distribution had restarted but also that the Shia in fact had released the food for Baqubah. The distribution may have begun in fits and starts, but the information battle seemed to be a decisive win.

And so we started with 16 trucks, but before it was all over, they had sent 94 trucks of food to Baqubah. There was enough food, according to our Army, to feed 200,000 people for 30 days.

I recalled one of the bureaucrats comments, upon hearing that al Qaeda had scattered like rabbits out of Baqubah. He seemed at first not to believe that news, but once he got confirmation, he made a point to tell us what that news actually meant: if al Qaeda was done in Baqubah, al Qaeda was done in Iraq.

#4  It appears that the word around Iraq is that al Q has a lot of stupid rules and Iraqis are now uniting against them and in support of an Iraq they don't yet understand. Al Q has also made themselves unwelcome by their free lance killing of Iraqi children to make a point.
In some sick reality, we need al Qaeda to remain a force for as long as we will be training and expanding Iraq's ground forces. The unitification factor provided by al Q is enough to keep the sunni and shia off each other's throats.

Suicide bomber kills 30 in Iraq, including 12 children
A suicide bomber sped into a Shiite village in northern Iraq Monday and blew up a truck packed with explosives, unleashing a huge blast that killed 30 people and pulverized homes. It was the deadliest attack on yet another bloody day in Iraq, where the military announced the deaths of five more US soldiers, and the overlapping insurgency and sectarian conflict sent another 15 Iraqis to their deaths.

The bomber detonated his deadly charge after driving across farmland to Al-Quba, killing 30 people, including 12 children, and flattening mud-brick houses, the mayor of nearby Tal Afar, Major General Najim Abdullah, told AFP. "It was filled with a massive amount of explosives. Twenty houses were destroyed, 10 of them entirely wiped out," said Abdullah, speaking from the nearest town some 20 kilometers away, to scramble emergency services.

Five women were among the dead and 14 people were in a critical condition in hospitals after the attack, he said. Provincial police spokesman Brigadier General Abdel-Karim Khalaf al-Juburi said 50 people were wounded.

Bombings are increasingly common in villages, as militants flee to rural backwaters away from thousands of US and Iraqi security forces cracking down on Baghdad and other flashpoint cities under a five-month-old security plan.
Witnesses said they saw foam used in making mattresses sticking out of the truck to disguise the explosives hidden underneath, Abdullah said. Bodies were pulled from the rubble of flattened homes in the village whose nearly 200 houses are built mostly from mud, and the victims were ferried to hospitals as far away as the neighboring Kurdish province of Dohuk, he said. "I was sitting at home when I saw a big truck speeding along. I went outside to watch and suddenly it exploded, its contents flung everywhere," 50-year-old Abu Qassim told AFP from his hospital bed in the northern city of Mosul. "My house was destroyed. My wife and four of my children were also wounded."

#2  Somehow even in backwater villages they are able to obtain TONS of explosives, and set up trucks as bombs with it. That's a lot of shepherd-loads across the border from Iran or Syria - there have to be some in power who are coordinating and expediting this traffic (and not shepherd convoys either).

The problem is, Glenmore, that Saddam Hussein was a bas$$$$ and hid millions of tons of ammunition and explosives all over the country, just for this kind of operation. It's easier to get a gun or explosives in Iraq than it is to get a decent meal in Germany, and you can do that just about anywhere.

Two terrorists killed, weapons cache destroyed
Coalition Forces killed two terrorists, detained one suspected terrorist and destroyed a cache of bomb-making materials during an operation Aug. 4-5 in Diyala province. Ground forces had set up a security perimeter for their operation near Kahylaniyah when a vehicle sped toward them and stopped. Two men armed with AK-47s got out of the vehicle and attempted to fire on the ground forces. Coalition Forces, reacting in self-defense, engaged the armed men, killing them.

During a patrol in the area, Coalition Forces discovered a house containing bomb-making materials and military-style equipment, including camouflage uniforms, binoculars and assault vests. In addition to mortar rounds, a drum of homemade explosives, wires and blasting caps, the ground forces found one fully assembled improvised explosive device. Coalition Forces cleared civilians from the area and military explosives experts conducted a controlled detonation of the house, which had several secondary explosions as the volatile weapons and materials ignited.

A Coalition Forces element stopped at a patrol base during the operation received small arms fire from a nearby palm grove. The ground forces, responding appropriately to drive out the hostile threat, returned fire with mortar rounds and suppressed the incoming fire. Coalition Forces detained one suspected terrorist during the operation for his alleged ties to the local al-Qaeda in Iraq network. ?Eliminating the terrorists who use explosives to kill innocent Iraqis and the security forces who protect them is a top priority? said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. ?We will continue to hunt them down and kill or capture them.?

#1  I dunno, ever since the surge started I've been reading the good news on Rantburg - terrorists killed, emirs killed or captured, weapons caches found and destroyed, IED's & VBED found and destroyed, day after day the good news continues - surely the tipping point is at hand?

Add to that the massacres of ordinary Iraqi people going about their daily business which can only work against AQ. If you wanted to sow fear and intimidation in a population wouldn't you be better off taking out people one by one, stealthily, rather than wholesale killing which tends to turn the entire population against you?

11 terrorists killed, 10 suspects detained in Coalition operations
Coalition Forces killed 11 terrorists and detained 10 suspected terrorists during operations in the Tigris River Valley targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq Monday.

East of Balad, Coalition Forces conducted a raid targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq emir responsible for carrying out attacks against Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces in Salah ad Din province. Immediately upon their arrival at the targeted location, the ground forces received heavy small arms fire. In self-defense, Coalition Forces called in close air support and confirmed seven armed terrorists were killed during the air engagement. Coalition Forces proceeded to secure the target building and detained two suspected terrorists.

Coalition Forces targeted a close associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq emir of the northern belts around Baghdad during a raid northwest of Tarmiyah. As they approached the building, armed terrorists engaged them with small arms fire. Coalition Forces, acting in self-defense, returned fire and killed three terrorists. The ground forces secured the building and detained four suspected terrorists for their alleged ties to the senior leader, whose network is known for deadly car bombings and attacks on Iraqi infrastructure.

Near the town of Khaylaniyah northeast of Baghdad, Coalition Forces conducted coordinated raids targeting the al-Qaeda in Iraq foreign terrorist network. As the ground forces moved toward their first objective, surveillance teams saw an armed man maneuvering toward a nearby canal. Coalition Forces called close air support to engage the perceived hostile threat. The terrorist was killed and Coalition Forces found him with a heavy machine gun.

The ground forces also discovered a weapons cache containing rocket-propelled grenades and a launcher, dynamite and an anti-tank mine. Coalition Forces detained three suspected terrorists during the operation.

In a raid east of Samarra, Coalition Forces detained one individual associated with a suspected senior foreign terrorist who is believed to support suicide bombing operations in the Samarra area. 'We continue to apply pressure on terrorists and their leaders,' said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. 'Each successful operation gives us better understanding of the terrorist networks and how to attack them.'

Local resident brings large cache to Soldiers
An Iraqi man came to Patrol Base Inchon, Iraq, Aug. 5 with a truckload of explosives he found in a cache. Soldiers of Company D, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) out of Fort Drum, N.Y., helped the man unload the cache contents from his pickup truck into an unexploded ordnance pit near the patrol base.

The load consisted of two 155mm rounds and one 120mm round, two plastic pipes filled with homemade explosive, plastic gloves, 200 meters of command wire, 150 rounds of 14.5mm ammunition for a heavy machine gun, a 14.5mm machine-gun barrel, and 60 crush bar-type triggers for improvised explosive devices. An explosive ordnance disposal team destroyed the items.

#6  Imagine that. For some reason an Iraqi can handle this stuff without it exploding, but if the coalition gets their hands on it they have to blow it up in place because it's too dangerous to even look at.

Humor aside, why do I keep seeing in the news that the coaliton blows this stuff up in place instead of carting it off somewhere to be blown up or whatever? Is it because it is in the middle of nowhere and they want to make sure they get any nearby buried stuff? Can't they just disassemble it like the terrorists do?
Posted by: gorb || 08/07/2007 15:26 Comments || Top||

#7  There are several reasons. Sometimes there are fears that the cache could be boobytrapped. Sometimes the material is very old and has been buried for a long time and not suitable for use in being fired in the conventional sense. They can't really do anything with it other than blow it up anyway and if they can't see the complete cache to rule out boobytraps, they just blow it in place.

#8  Besides, it's more fun blowing it up in place.

MND-B Apache crews kill four armed insurgents
Multi-National Division-Baghdad Apache helicopter crews killed four armed insurgents at approximately 1 a.m. Aug. 5 in northwest Baghdad. The air weapons team of two Apaches from the 4th 'Guns' Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, was providing area security for 1st Battalion, 325th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Infantry Regiment, when the unit came under small arms fire.

The 'Guns' Apaches saw five insurgents with weapons maneuvering through alleyways. After being cleared by the ground unit, the Apache crews engaged the insurgents, killing four and wounding one. '(Insurgents) think they can engage Coalition Forces and escape, but they cannot outrun the deadly effects of our Apaches,' said Tampa, Fla., native Maj. Justin Hall, operations officer for 4-227th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion.

8 more insurgents detained in Marne Avalanche
Paratroopers from Strike Force Geronimo captured eight suspected al-Qaeda insurgents believed to be responsible for attacks against citizens and security forces in North Babil, during Operation Marne Avalanche, August 4 northwest of Iskandariyah.

Paratroopers from the 3rd Battalion, 509th Airborne, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division conducted an early morning air assault and raid after receiving reports pinpointing the suspects' hideout. One of the suspects was listed as a high value target on the brigade's most wanted list. All are being held for questioning. In addition to the eight detainees, pressure wire and other components used to construct improvised explosive devices were also found and were taken for use in the investigation.

"The local citizens are tired of being caught in the middle of fighting. They are tired of seeing their family and neighbors murdered and they are starting to come to us for help," said 2nd Lt. Thomas Murphy, a platoon leader with the Strike Force. "I never thought I would see that, but we are here to help them. The sooner they can stand up on their own two feet the better."

In numerous precision raids during the first 10 days of Operation Marne Avalanche, the Paratroopers of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Abn.) have killed seven insurgents and captured more than 80 others including seven cell leaders and other individuals identified as high value targets.

F-16 Fighting Falcons eliminate rogue JAM extremists attempting an attack on Coalition Forces
Two F-16 Fighting Falcons destroyed a rocket site being used by suspected Shia extremists linked to Jaysh al-Mahdi to target Coalition Forces Aug. 4 in the outskirts of Diwaniyah.

According to preliminary reports, more than three members of the extremist group at the site were killed in the bombing. The aircraft also destroyed a tractor-trailer used in the attempted rocket attack against the nearby military installation. A local citizen called in the tip to U.S. Special Forces to report the impending attack. Upon confirmation of the rocket site, close air support was used to eliminate the threat. No Iraqi or U.S. Forces were harmed during the operation.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Qassam rocket fired at Israel kills two children in Gaza Strip
Too bad, so sad...
A Qassam rocket fired by Palestinian militants struck the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, killing an eight-year-old boy and his six-year-old sister, and injuring five other children.

The rocket, fired at Israel, fell short and hit the children's house in the village of Beit Lahiya. No group claimed responsibility.
Nope, I ain't payin for it...
Moaiya Hassanain, a Palestinian health official, said the wounded were evacuated to hospital for medical treatment. The Kamal Adwan hospital identified the dead children as eight-year-old Wesam Abed Allah and his six-year-old sister Hala.

The Associated Press had earlier quoted witnesses as saying the blast was the result of the children playing with a homemade rocket or a mortar shell that they had stumbled upon. It is not uncommon for Qassam rockets fired at Israel to land inside the Gaza Strip.
That's okay. Make 'em martyrs, toss mom and pops a few bucks...all is forgiven. All in the spirit of The Struggle...

Unexploded Israeli rocket detonates killing two children in Gaza

Gaza – Ma'an – Palestinian child, Hala Wael Abdalah, aged 7, and her brother, Islam, aged 9, were killed in an explosion on Tuesday morning in a housing estate, in the An Nada area of the northern Gaza Strip. Eight others were injured in the incident.

The cause of the explosion has not been verified.

Palestinian medical sources from Kamal Adwan Hospital said that Hala arrived dead, with her body severely burnt and in pieces. Her brother, Islam, died shortly after arriving at hospital.

Ma'an contacted local residents in the area to decipher the cause of the incident. Many said they believe it was a Palestinian homemade projectile, launched by one of the factions and targeting Israel, which landed in the area and killed the two children.

None of the factions have as yet announced responsibility for launching the projectile.

A leader within the Palestinian resistance commented on Ma'an's report of the death of the children. He said "the investigation of the resistance revealed that the explosion resulted from an unexploded rocket, launched by the Israelis." He added "the rocket was found by the children and while they were playing with it, it exploded and caused the disaster."

The source vehemently denied any Palestinian resistance activity in that area at the time

Terror suspect hides bomb in lamb
A 10-kilogram bomb hidden inside the carcass of a lamb was discovered Monday by IDF troops south of the West Bank village of Salim. The bomb was discovered on the side of the road and Central Command sources said they believed it was intended to be used against the nearby settlements of Itamar or Elon Moreh. The use of the lamb carcass on Monday was not the first time that Palestinian terrorists have rigged animals with explosives. In 2003, a donkey loaded with explosives blew up as a bus passed on the road from Jerusalem to Gush Etzion. In 2001, a Palestinian drove a donkey cart laden with explosives toward a group of soldiers. At the last minute he jumped off the cart and detonated the bombs that exploded only partially. The cart had been loaded with four gas canisters, two mines, a bag of oil and a bag of nails.

Meanwhile Monday, a Kassam rocket struck a kindergarten in Sderot, causing damage but no injuries. Earlier in the day, three Kassams fell near communities in the western Negev. No one was wounded. An IDF soldier was lightly wounded Monday morning during clashes in Nablus, where troops from the Paratrooper's Brigade arrested a senior Hamas terrorist.

Man shot dead by Thai terrorists
In the latest reports of violence in the south, a man was killed after his attackers reportedly fired several shots at him in Yala’s Banang Sata district on Monday night.

The 61-year-old man, identified as Arwae Lateh, was said to have been the father of a Muslim religious leader and had been on his way home from the mosque. According to witnesses, the man was attacked by three to five unidentified men who fired shots at him at point-blank range. They later escaped on a motorcycle.

Authorities are investigating who or which group was responsible for the brutal murder, but initially suspect that it was the work of terrorists insurgents trying to stir up unrest in the region.

Witnesses report heavy clashes in Nahr al-Bared refugee camp
Heavy fights were witnessed early Monday between the Lebanese Army and Fatah al-Islam militant groups, now fighting for the 12th week. "Intermittent morning fights in Nahr al-Bared persisted between the Lebanese Army and surviving Fatah al-Islam militants," the National News Agency said on Monday. It said that army artillery bombarded at 7am militant sites still remaining in the security zone inside the camp. The camp was witness to violent confrontations since the early morning and the army attacked militants in several locations. Despite limited breaches, the night was calm.

President Emile Lahoud spoke out against some March 14 politicians, who have been saluting the army for its heroic accomplishment at the Nahr al-Bared camp. He said that those politicians "had neglected the needs of the army in terms of modern and sophisticated military equipment and arms."

Lebanese army kills Fatah Islam deputy commander
Lebanese authorities announced Monday that the deputy commander of al-Qaida-inspired militants entrenched in a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon has been killed.

Information Minister Ghazi Aridi said Abu Hureira, a Lebanese whose real name is Shehab al-Qaddour, was killed few days ago by police in the northern port city of Tripoli, near the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared where Fatah Islam militants have been fighting Lebanese soldiers for more than two months. "Cabinet was informed by Interior Minister Hassan Sabei that Lebanese security forces have killed the Fatah Islam's No. 2 in the Abu Samra neighborhood" in Tripoli, Aridi told reporters following a Cabinet meeting Monday night.
