Eight Taliban killed
Afghan authorities claimed to have killed eight Taliban fighters and arrested three others in the latest military offensive against Taliban in Afghanistan’s Paktika province Tuesday.

Sources while quoting Afghan officials told The News that fierce fighting was going on between the Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters at Hasan Khel and Saltak towns of Pathan sub-division in Paktika province. They said US-led coalition forces earlier bombed the hideouts of Taliban fighters in these areas and then Afghan security forces started ground operation, in which according to authorities eight Taliban were killed and three others were taken into custody.

Morocco holds 13 suspected Jihadist group members
Moroccan security forces have arrested 13 people suspected of belonging to a Jihadist group which has threatened to kill top government figures, officials said on Wednesday. Officials said the 13 people arrested are suspected of being members of Jamaat Attawhid wal Jihad.
That'd be Zark's old mob, or a close imitation thereof...
The suspects were questioned by police before further investigation by a court magistrate and trial, they added. Statements on the Internet issued in the name of the group in the past year have identified reform-minded King Mohammed and "his infidel government" as targets. "We in Jamaat Attawhid wal Jihad in Morocco are declaring a merciless and destructive war against infidels and apostates in this country to clean it of their corruption and oppression," it said in one of the statements.
Then you've got no bitch if the gummint engages in a merciless and destructive crackdown on you and your kind...
A letter purportedly from the group was also sent to al Attihad al Ichtiraqi newspaper, mouthpiece of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), in which it threatened to kill top party leaders, including Finance and Privatisation Minister Fathallah Oualalou. USFP is the main party in the coalition government headed by Prime Minister Driss Jettou. The letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters, was headed: "Be ready to count your deaths".
So enjoy your time in jug.
The Casablanca-based Attawhid is the second Jihadist group to be broken up by security forces in Morocco since they dismantled in August Ansar el Mehdi, which vowed to turn the moderate Muslim kingdom into a purist Islamic state. The 56 Mehdi members are still whining about how oppressed they are in custody awaiting trial. El Mehdi group had cells in Casablanca and four other cities in Morocco, officials said.

Ex-members of disbanded detachment surrender weapons in Chechnya
(Interfax) - Ex-members of the disbanded Gorets tactical group, formerly led by the wanted commander Movladi Baisarov, have surrendered a large arsenal to Chechen police. The Gorets detachment was disbanded at the order of a federal executive agency and its former members were attached to other units. "Thirty-eight pieces of fire arms and over 6,000 pieces of ammunition were surrendered in the village of Pobedinskoye in Groznensky district on Tuesday, where the group was based," the Chechen Interior Ministry informed Interfax on Wednesday.

Chechen Interior Minister Ruslan Alkhanov told Interfax on October 25 that Baisarov, a native of Chechnya's Groznensky District, was reportedly hiding in Moscow. "He was entered on a wanted list on suspicion of organizing abductions and murders," Alkhanov said.

Trial proceedings have resumed for 72 suspected members of a Turkish Al-Qaeda cell implicated in the Istanbul bombing three years ago. Prosecutors are charging key suspect, Syrian Loa'I Mohammad Haj Bakr Al-Saqa, with masterminding the suicide bombings and have asked that he be given a life sentence. The deadly attacks in November 2003 killed 58 people, targeting two synagogues, the British Consulate General and the local headquarters of the HSBC bank.

Airport Arrest Turns Up Nuclear Info
HT Intrinsicpilot, thought this needed a full post.
A man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after officials say they found him carrying more than $78,000 in cash and a laptop computer containing information about nuclear materials and cyanide.
Sisayehiticha Dinssa, an unemployed U.S. citizen, was arrested Tuesday after a dog caught the scent of narcotics on cash he was carrying, according to an affidavit filed in court.

When agents asked him if he had any cash to declare, he said he had $18,000, authorities said. But when agents checked his luggage, they found an additional $59,000. When they scrolled through his laptop, they said they found the mysterious files.

At a court hearing Wednesday, Dinssa was ordered held in custody until at least until Monday at the request of prosecutors.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Leonid Feller argued Dinssa was a potential risk to the community and federal agents want to get a warrant to search his computer more thoroughly, The Detroit News reported Thursday. U.S. Magistrate Donald Scheer approved Feller's request to detain him.

Dinssa, who is from Dallas, arrived in Detroit from Nigeria by way of Amsterdam and was headed for Phoenix, Feller said. He is charged with concealing more than $10,000 in his luggage, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, the Detroit Free Press reported.

A message seeking comment was left Thursday with his lawyer, Leroy Soles.

#11  This is why we carry travellers checks instead of cash, Mr. Dinssa... or have bank accounts in the Cayman Islands in which money appears regularly in less than US$10,000 amounts (ok, not me, as unfortunately I'm probably the reason Mr. Wife will never be rich enough to wander through airports with outrageous amounts of the kind of cash that once passed through the hands of drug dealers). Hopefully this mule's laptop will contain information connecting to a great many persons of interest.

#12  To make it even more interesting to the denizens of the 'burg, since I haven't seen this mentioned....I thought I'd share this from a site called Nuclear Tourist.

Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is the largest nuclear electric generating site in the United States. Three (3) Combustion Engineering Pressurized Water Reactor units each have an output of ~ 1270 MWe. Each unit has 2 reactor cooling loops, each with a 2 reactor cooling pump and a single steam generator. Arizona Public Service Company is the operator and co-owns the units with utilities in New Mexico, Texas, and California. The Palo Vede site is at Wintersberg, Arizona, 34 miles west of Phoenix.

I wonder if Mr Dinssa was headed there?

India-Pakistan
Kashmir Korpse Kount: 8
Eight suspected Islamic militants were shot dead by troops in Indian-held Kashmir on Wednesday in gunbattles, police said. Seven of the militants were killed in three gunbattles in northern Kashmir along the heavily-militarised ceasefire line that divides the state with Pakistan, police officer Mohammed Subhan said. “The gunbattles erupted early Wednesday when army and police launched searches in the district (of Kupwara),” he said, adding that the militants opened fire injuring two Indian soldiers. The eighth militant was shot dead during another gunbattle in southern Kashmir, he said. The latest violence came as Indian foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon winds up two days of talks with his Pakistani counterpart Riaz Mohammed Khan that are part of a slow-moving peace process aimed at the Kashmir dispute and broader issues of terrorism.

Iraq
Nine Yusufiyah Terrorists Killed (inculding some Camelkazes)
BAGHDAD, IRAQ – Coalition Forces killed nine terrorists and detained nine suspected terrorists during a raid Thursday just south of Yusufiyah, further diminishing the al-Qaida in Iraq network.

As Coalition Forces approached the targeted area, they called out for people to exit the buildings. Ground forces noticed several armed individuals in a nearby wooded area maneuvering against them. Close air support was called in to mitigate the threat to the Coalition Forces ground team. Coalition aircraft engaged the terrorists with precision fires. Several of the terrorists killed were wearing suicide vests.
Appears to me there's more to this story than meets the eye.
This and other recent operations in the region highlight the deliberate, methodical dismantlement of the al-Qaida in Iraq network and those who contribute to its illegal actions.
Looks like a very competent and somewhat complex operation. Had to be a 'high value target' - I wonder who? Doubtful the operation was IA. Maybe Task Force 145, or whatever that special outfit is?

#4  Most definitely this was a very special sort of takedown. How often do you hear of several bomb vest wearers being nailed all at once? This was a mission briefing session where we intercepted a whole crew just getting ready to deploy. Good work, team! Booya!
Posted by: Zenster || 11/16/2006 17:25 Comments || Top||

#5  well, if you're wearing any kind of vest, and you attack our air-supported troops, I call that a suicide vest....
Posted by: Frank G || 11/16/2006 17:44 Comments || Top||

#6  Zen,
I am not so sure it was an interrupted mission briefing; in the past when we've grabbed 'Mr. Bigs' they and/or their guards would have such vests on or nearby. One or two - maybe a mission, but 'several' is more than we usually see on a mission. I infer that they (guards and maybe principal) deployed as we closed and tried to ambush, but were not up to the skill level of the good guys. If I'm right there should have been documents or computers collected, and quite likely some more bad guys rolled up in the next few days.

#7  Thank you for the insight, Glenmore. I hadn't heard about the principals surrounding themselves with lots of belt bombers. If I were a big falafel, I'd be a bit on edge regarding the judgement of such deathwatch style "bodyguards". Either they have a "safe word" agreement that makes SMBD practitioners look like slackers or someone really, really trusts their security detail.

Given this fact, it only serves to highlight what a stupendous job our troops do in nabbing these highya-muckymucks alive.

Top Al Qaeda operator 'arrested' in Iraq
Authorities said US and Iraqi forces have arrested a top operator of Iraq's Al Qaeda group. Interior Ministry spokesman Major General Abdel Karim Khalaf said that US forces parachuted on the Baghdad house of Abdullah Juburi in an overnight operation. "He is one of the dangerous criminals in Al Qaeda," Major General Khalaf said.

He said that Iraqi ground forces, including the rapid intervention force, raided Mr Juburi's house as US troops parachuted into the area, Arab Jubur, on the southern outskirts of Baghdad. "US helicopters and troops backed the Iraqi soldiers in the operation," he said. The US military has not commented on the operation.

#5  RD, you'd be surprised how things work.

Remember that specops isnt always HALO or fastrope - sometimes its hop and pop off the back of a helicopter (ramp jump from a Sh*thook Chinook for example)

You have to look at what part of Baghdad they are talking about - it encompasses a pretty broad area and is rather loosely defined. Google Earth is your friend.

#9  I don't know but I would bet if this happened those "parachuted" US forces were probably more along the lines of "repelled" US soldgiers out of a helicopter. Sounds like a Taskforce 145 or whatever number this cycle is using backed up by some IA.

#12  Think of it this way - to fast rope, you get the helicopters to stop - and they ahve to come low. So its pretty obvious somethings up.

Parachuting out of the back of a Chinook, it doesnt stop and its higher up. So they may think its just a bird going someplace else, as opposed to the fastrope scenario. Plus a chinook carries a lot more people than a Blackhawk.

Suicide bombing kills 2, injures 15 in Iraq
(KUNA) - Two people were killed on Wednesday in a suicide car bombing that targeted a funeral south of Baghdad, said Iraqi police sources. The bombing took place in Al-Sehha suburb, in the volatile Dorrah district, south Baghdad, and injured 15 other persons, the sources added. Earlier in the day a booby-trapped car went off at Al-Kilani refueling station, killing eight persons.

Meanwhile, U.S. and Iraqi forces arrested 38 suspects in Mosul, Baghdad, Al-Ramadi, Salah-Eddin, Diali and Kerkuk in the last 24 hours, according to a statement issued by office of General Commander of Iraqi Armed Forces. Eighteen other militants and suspects were arrested north Baghdad and in Anbar province Wednesday morning, the U.S. military said, adding that the suspects were being investigated. A leader of al-Qaeda organization was also arrested in the crackdown that led also to destruction of a weapons cache, according to an Iraqi security source.

Another four Iraqi gunmen were also killed by US forces while they were trying to steal equipment from a damaged US vehicle in the city. Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel raids Gaza Strip after rocket death
GAZA CITY - Israeli warplanes raided the Gaza Strip overnight hours after an Israeli woman was killed by Palestinian rocket fire from Gaza, with the Jewish state vowing to retaliate against militants who would “pay a heavy price”.

Israeli warplanes carried out five raids on the Gaza Strip late Wednesday and early Thursday, Palestinian security officials said, adding that two Palestinians were wounded when the Israelis targeted a house in Shatti refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip where an official of the Palestinian militant umbrella group the Popular Resistance Committees lived.

A second Israeli air raid took place on the Jabaliya refugee camp, also in the north of the Gaza Strip. That attack targeted the home of a leader of the Ezzedine Al Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas which heads the current Palestinian government, the sources said. They gave no further details.

An army spokesman confirmed that aircraft had carried out two attacks “aimed at buildings used to store weapons.” Three later raids were aimed at houses belonging to Hamas militants at Rafah in the south of the Strip and in Jabaliya, the officials said.

Israeli helicopters strike civilian target in Gaza
(KUNA) -- Israeli helicopters on Wednesday fired two missiles at a civilian target in Shatea' Refugee Camp in western Gaza City. Local radio stations said the two missiles hit the residence of Yousef Al-Sharrafi, while sirens of ambulance vehicles and fire brigades' were heard in area. Israeli helicopters and surveillance airplanes were also heard circling the skies over the city.

The air strike came hours after Israel threats to react to the Palestinian missile strikes on Sderot settlement in southern Israel. The local radio stations in Gaza called on citizens to exercise caution and stay alert amid fears of other Israeli raids.

#7  There isn't a block in Gaza that doesn't have storage for terrorists I bet.

That's most likely true, Charles. For myself, any notion of "Palestinian citizen" ended when they elected a terrorist (Hamas) government. All those women racing to that mosque in order to serve as human shields for terrorists really nailed the coffin shut.

Sderot woman killed in Kassam attack
The IDF promised a swift and harsh response Wednesday to a barrage of 13 Kassam rockets that pounded the western Negev throughout the day, leaving one person dead and two others seriously wounded in the southern town of Sderot. In an early morning attack, Fatima Slutsker, 57, was killed and a security guard at the residence of Defense Minister Amir Peretz was seriously wounded after a Kassam rocket, fired by Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip, landed near the Labor Party chairman's home in Sderot.

The two were taken to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where Slutsker died of her wounds and the security guard, Maor Peretz, 24, had both of his legs amputated after sustaining severe shrapnel wounds. In the evening, another barrage of Kassam rockets struck Sderot, wounding four, including one 17-year-old seriously. Four other rockets struck a neighborhood in the southern part of Ashkelon.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz threatened the Palestinians with a massive, widespread ground operation in the Gaza Strip to stop the Kassam rocket attacks and curb the buildup of Hamas forces in the Palestinian territory.
Keep threatening, Dan. Eventually you'll turn blue in the face.

Southeast Asia
Islamic terrorists set free
ALMOST 60 jailed Islamic extremists linked to such atrocities as the Bali bombings have been set free. They include 14 terrorists who have been quietly released in the past two months.

Many of those who walked free in October and this month had at least two months cut from their sentences under Indonesia's justice system.

They were convicted on charges linked to the two Bali bombings, attacks on the Australian Embassy and Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, and other atrocities.

The latest releases, and that in June of Jemaah Islamiah's spiritual leader Abu Bakar Bashir, have outraged families who lost loved ones in the 2002 and 2005 Bali terrorist strikes.

Dozens more had been arrested by Indonesian police, often with the help of Australian authorities, and held for just days or weeks before being freed for lack of evidence. Those questioned but freed include Jemaah Islamiah member Bambang Tutuko, who was believed to have been trained in bomb making under the notorious Dr Azahari Husin. He was held for just one day in September 2003.

Australian survivors of the attacks were shocked last night to learn those responsible had escaped justice.

"They've probably been in jail for maybe a couple of years. That's not enough. They're accessories to murder, they played a part in killing 202 people," said Melbourne man Dale Atkin, who suffered severe burns in the Sari Club bombing in 2002.

Other survivors feared those set free could be plotting more terrorist attacks.
"While they're alive they've still got the opportunity to plan these attacks," said Leanne Woodgate, who escaped death when she fled Paddy's bar.

More than 200 prisoners are in Indonesian jails as a result of terrorism-related offences.

But the dozens already released had been arrested for connections to the Bali, Australian Embassy and Marriott bombings, terror-linked weapons offences and a string of Christmas Eve church bombings in 2000.

Others had harboured known terrorists who were being hunted for the 2002 Kuta attacks that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

Among those freed in the past two months are:

SIROJUL Munir bin Achmad Asumi, convicted of providing money and harbouring terrorists after the Bali bombings, given a two-month remission on a five-year sentence.

GUN GUN Rusman Gunawan, jailed for involvement in JI's al-Ghuraba cell and document fraud. Also linked to financing the 2003 Marriott blast, which killed 12. Released at the end of Ramadan.

MUHAJIR bin Amin, Sukastopo bin Kartomiarjo and Eko Hadi Prasetyo bin Sukastopo, arrested in 2003 for helping hide Bali bomber Ali Imron in Kalimantan – each received a two-month sentence reduction.

MUHAMMAD Rusi bin Salim, KOMPAK member, also concealed the whereabouts of Imron while he was on the run.

PURYANTO, alias Pak De, helped hide Imron and fellow bomber Mubarok – later received a two-month remission.

ABDUL Haer, Mujahidin KOMPAK member arrested in 2003 in connection with attacks in Poso, sentenced to four years but released early.

ARMAN, Andang, Hamdan, Syafri and Hendra Yadi, also Mujahidin KOMPAK members arrested for the Poso attack, released this month.

Freed earlier were JI member Dedi Mulyadi, who was involved in the Christmas 2000 bombings in Java and released in 2004. Firmansyah, alias Edi Harun, was also freed after about two years' jail for helping hide Imron.

And like JI leader Bashir who was controversially freed after 2 1/2 years, Abu Jibril, a close associate of Bashir and a primary recruiter for the group, was held for less than 3 1/2 years.

Originally detained in Malaysia, Jibril was sentenced to 5 1/2 months for immigration and forgery but authorities could not lay terrorism charges.

Dozens of other suspected militants were also picked up but were unable to be prosecuted because of lack of evidence. They include Dahlan, aka Leo, a JI member and trained bomb-maker who was held for a week.

Thai Muslim Teachers Held for Rebellion
A Thai court on Wednesday sentenced three Muslim teachers to 10 years each in prison for rebellion and criminal conspiracy charges related to their membership in an Islamic separatist group, but acquitted them of murder charges in a 2004 bombing, their lawyer said.

The provincial court of Pattani, in southern Thailand, found Aduenan Seng, 26, Abhisit Mahama, 23, and Abdullah Dueramae, 31, guilty of the charges in connection with actions planned while members of the New Pattani United Liberation Organization, or New PULO, their lawyer Anukul Awaeputeh said.

However, the three were acquitted of murder charges connected with a bomb planted near a market in the city of Pattani on Jan. 5, 2004, that killed two police explosive experts trying to defuse it.

The court found insufficient evidence to prove the three men were involved in planting the bomb, Anukul said, adding that all three would appeal their convictions.

More than 1,800 people have died in violence in Thailand's three southernmost, Muslim-majority provinces Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat since an Islamic insurgency flared in January 2004.

Southern Muslims have long complained of discrimination at the hands of the Buddhist majority, especially in jobs and education.

In the latest violence, a village headman, Da-oh Kadasae, was shot to death by two men Wednesday as he was riding his motorcycle in Yala's Raman district.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont is scheduled to visit the restive south on Thursday, primarily to give moral support to some 200 Buddhists who fled their village and took refuge at a Buddhist temple for fear of being attacked by Muslim insurgents.

Sri Lanka
4 LTTE militants, soldier killed
A soldier of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and four LTTE members were killed in continuing incidents of sporadic fighting between the two sides. A statement by the SLA said troops in Ethawetunewea, Weliya killed on Tuesday four militants trying to infiltrate villages in the area. Separately one soldier was killed in an LTTE attack in Batticaloa.

It said LTTE cadres, operating in uncleared areas off Mankerny and Kadjuwatta in Batticaloa since the early hours of Tuesday, continued small arms and mortar fire attacks on Army camps and their sentry points throughout the day.

LTTE cadres in Kommathurai, Batticaloa, threw a hand grenade at a picket point of the Security Forces and injured one. Troops on information given by civilians conducted a raid in a courtyard in Kalevadi, in Jaffna and unearthed weapons.
