In response to recent gun violence that has killed four people and injured many more, a Kent County commissioner wants to take firearms off the streets by buying them and offering limited immunity to illegal owners.
Commissioner Paul Mayhue is urging the public to send money to the Kent County Sheriff's Department. He is concerned about months of violence on the Southeast Side of Grand Rapids. "If we could get the violence to stop, we could have an anti-gun-violence celebration," he said.
Police Chief Harry Dolan is skeptical. Studies show buyback programs don't get the right weapons off the street, he said, and gang members would not surrender their firearms.

Mayhue has another idea to reduce violence: a peace summit involving gangs. He said pastors Charlie Jones and Kenny Hoskins have agreed to let their churches be meeting places.

But the more l look at it and the less it looks like Monument Valley so you are probably right it should be South Africa. So this isn't Red Flag and these arean't French pilots.
Bummer, I just love Monument Valley (often watch John Ford movies for it) and I would have loved being able to show this movie to people who make racist jokes about French (1), even when the French in question risk his life every day.
(1) It is Ok to make jokes about the French in general, but I hate when the persion implies every French is a coward. I still haven't digested someone sugegsting that a group of French carrier pilots who landed ion the Us were trying to surrender. Landing on a frigging carrier (1) requires steel balls so carrier pilots (and a few other people) should be off limits for this kind of jokes.
(1) Specially when carrier is small and slow (the faster the carrier the easier to land in it) like the Charles de Gaulle and the plane has a long nose and a delta wing like the Rafale fighter.

hokay JFM - we know not "every French is a coward" - somehow though, you've managed to let them get in positions of potential power, like our Democrat party

What really amazes me? Therefs a point or two in there where the videographer - who I swear, canft be much above 50 AGL, and thus is never more that four-tenths of one second from dying, picks up and casually glances at a map, or twiddles with a knob on the instrument panel. Ifve been that low before. Never tried to read a map while doing it, though.
The Sponås family in Strande, Molde had a hen that managed to lay an egg weighing 122 grams (4.3 oz), compared to the norm of 50-60 grams, newspaper Romsdal Budstikke reports.
The chicken equivalent of passing a watermelon.
It was the last thing the bird did.
"She's dead, Jim!"
"I couldn't believe my own eyes when she laid an egg that was more than twice the size of a normal hen's egg. It looked completely unreal, with a 122-gram egg," Solveig Sponås told the newspaper.
The hen, a Loman Brown, came from Erlend Aarskog's poultry farm, and he has never heard of an egg like it. "It is at least extremely rare. With eggs like this you would only get eight eggs to the kilo, and normally you get 16," Aarskog said.
"Ja, sure! Y'gotta eat 'em with half a hog's worth of bacon!"
Sponås wondered if diet, as well as talent, was behind the record production, saying her hens are fed much fruit and vegetables in addition to their feed. The story ended sadly. As the newspaper put it, it is no joke laying an egg twice normal size, and the hen suffered injuries so serious that it had to be put down.
"Solveig, the hen looks mighty poor after passing that egg. Maybe we should do something for her?"
"Right. I'll lop her head off and we'll have her for dinner!"

I grew up eating hen and turkey eggs. There's a big difference in both size and flavor. That's almost a turkey-sized egg from a chicken. I've seen them slightly larger than normal, usually with a double-yolk, but never that size. Poor chicken - about like a 90-pound girl giving birth to an 18-pound baby.

Issuing a fatwa has become a matter of pride, according to Saudi Arabias Sheikh Saleh bin Abdulaziz al Sheikh, the minister for Islamic affairs. In a recently published book on the issue, Al Sheik criticized individuals who issue religious edicts without having sufficient knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence to do so and condemned those did not respect the process. He called on muftis to fear God and only be cautious when issuing Fatwas.
Some individuals in Saudi Arabia, he added, have issued religious edicts while eating or talking on the phone. Every media outlet, including satellite television stations, now has a resident mufti, evidence that the situation in the Kingdom has reached crisis point. If people are left to do as they please, the minister wrote, chaos would take hold and misleading edicts would be issued. He also listed the conditions a Muslim should abide by when issuing an edict or requesting one and recommended individuals follow the examples of Prophet Mohammed.
In his book, Al Sheikh distinguished between those who avoid issuing a fatwa and those who avoid saying the truth. If a mufti has to issue a fatwa and possesses the appropriate knowledge to do so, and there is no else than can, then he is obliged to give a religious verdict.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A grand jury declined Friday to indict Rep. Cynthia McKinney in connection with a confrontation in which she admitted hitting a police officer who tried to stop her from entering a House office building. The grand jury had been considering the case since shortly after the March 29 incident, which has led to much discussion on Capitol Hill about race and the conduct of lawmakers and the officers who protect them.
She's been held up for ridicule, and without a trial there's no chance of her redeeming herself in public opinion.
``We respect the decision of the grand jury in this difficult matter,'' said U.S. Attorney Kenneth Wainstein. His statement, released late Friday, also included support for the officer involved, Paul McKenna, and the Capitol Police. He said, ``This is a tremendously difficult job, and it is one that Officer McKenna and his colleagues perform with the utmost professionalism and dignity.'' With that, Wainstein closed a case that has simmered with racial and political tension.
``I am relieved that this unfortunate incident is behind me,'' McKinney said in a statement Friday night. ``I accept today's grand jury finding of 'no probable cause' as right and just and the proper resolution of this case.''

KARACHI - A Pakistani Muslim man accused of insulting the Prophet Mohammad has been killed inside a court compound in a frenzied knife attack, police said on Saturday. The suspect accused of blasphemy, Abdul Sattar Gopang, was set upon by two attackers as he was leaving a court in the town of Muzzafargarh, 480 km (300 miles) southeast of Islamabad, on Friday. He was stabbed in the chest 15 times.
Police described the attackers as religious fanatics. The two, a student and a shopkeeper, were arrested on murder charges, policemen Rai Tahir told Reuters by telephone. They have no regrets, theyre smiling, Tahir said. They say they decided to kill Gopang at the first opportunity, that it was their duty.
"We're good Moose-limbs, you know!"
Gopang had been arrested in March after being accused of uttering blasphemous comments during a fight with a man.
"Yer mudder!"
"Yer mustache!"
"By Allan I'll get you for that!"
"Hey, you just commited blasphemy!"
"urk"
Blasphemy is against the law in Muslim Pakistan and carries the death sentence. Cases are relatively common but death sentences have never been carried out because convictions have always been turned down by high courts citing lack of evidence. There are frequently occasionally instances of enraged mobs attacking and killing people accused of blasphemy.

MULTAN, Pakistan - A frenzied mob beat a teacher to death when he tried to help a Muslim cleric in a row over the alleged desecration of the Quran, a local police chief said on Friday.
The prayer leader was attacked by more than 1,000 people at Hasilpur town in central Punjab province after claims that he burned pages from an old copy of the holy book near a drain, Nasir Sayal told AFP. A retired school teacher came in and tried to save the cleric but he was also severely beaten by the mob and later died in hospital, he said.
An angry crowd also attacked a police vehicle and broke its windscreen when it tried to rescue the two men, Sayal said.
Security has been beefed up in the area and police have registered a case against the cleric under the countrys blasphemy law and a separate case against unknown people for murdering the school teacher.

The Brave Lions of Radical Islam(TM) strike again. And run away. From two dead women and two dead little children. And they are sure they are making the world better. And they wonder why nobody likes them. And somehow, at the same time, they manage to convince themselves that it is OK that they have to be verrrrrry careful who they might tell this story to.

Burning the Koran by the proverbial drain, was he? The ususal frame-up.
Some other Imam wants to take over the mosque and Hafiz, poor boy, is just not "pious" (read: violent) enough for that mosque. Charges of burning a Koran demonstrate his lack of "islamic value" and he's seen as a traitor.
It's more fun than bumping him off themselves - watch the crowd they aroused rip him to pieces. Islam, the religion of pieces.
