Afghanistan
At least 27 32 killed, 81 injured in attack on Afghanistan political rally
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Gunmen attacked a ceremony in the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday where a top Afghan political leader, Abdullah Abdullah
...the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against both Karzai and Ghani. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun. He also held the meaningless salaried sop position as CEO of Afghanistan, while Ghani was president...
, was present but escaped unharmed.

At least 27 people were killed and 29 others maimed at the event, according to Afghan officials, the first big attack on the capital since a troop withdrawal agreement was signed last week in Doha between the United States and the Afghan Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
Health ministry front man Wahidullah Mayar said the victims were taken to local hospitals.

Afghan cops were still trying to flush the button men out of a half-finished apartment building, interior ministry front man Nasrat Rahimi said.

The Taliban said in a statement they were not involved in the attack.
Last year ISIS claimed the attack on this annual Shiite memorial celebration, while the Taliban again denied involvement.
"The attack started with a boom, apparently a rocket landed in the area, Abdullah and some other politicians [...] escaped the attack unhurt," Abdullah's front man, Fraidoon Kwazoon, who was also present, told Rooters by telephone.

The gathering marked the anniversary of the death of Abdul Ali Mazari, an ethnic Hazara
...a grouping of Dari-speaking people of Sino-Tibetan descent inhabiting Afghanistan and Pakistain. They are predominantly Shia Moslems and not particularly warlike, which makes them favored targets...
leader who was killed in 1995 after being taken prisoner by the Taliban.

Abdullah, runner-up in the last three Afghan presidential elections, each of which he disputed, has served as chief executive of a coalition government since 2014 and is also a former foreign minister.

Broadcaster Tolo News showed live footage of people running for cover as gunfire was heard.

President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money...
tweeted that the attack was "a crime against humanity and against the national unity of Afghanistan".

He added he had telephoned Abdullah, his longtime political rival. Abdullah is contesting an Electoral Commission announcement last month that declared Ghani the winner of September's presidential election.
Tolo News updates the casualty numbers:
At least 32 people were killed and 81 others were wounded in the attack on a ceremony marking the anniversary of the death of Abdul Ali Mazari, leader of the Hezb-e Wahdat party, the Afghan Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Friday.

Africa Horn
US airstrike kills Al Shaboob terrorist in Somalia
[Am Mil News] U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted a second airstrike in Somalia this week, killing at least one terrorist of Al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based terror group affiliated with Al Qaeda.

The airstrike, which did not kill or injure any civilians or others, took place in Qunyo Barrow, Somalia on Thursday.

"Al-Shabaab's leadership recently reiterated its primary focus of attacking American and Western targets beyond Somalia's borders. Al-Shabaab remains fully committed to exporting violence," U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Miguel Castellanos, AFRICOM's deputy director of operations, said in a statement to American Military News.

"We support the international security assistance model in Somalia. Our support, coupled with other international partners, restricts that ambition as the Somali forces continue to grow in capability," Castellanos added.

AFRICOM's previous airstrike, which took place on Monday also in Qunyo Barrow, Somalia, killed one terrorist and wounded two others.

"US Africa Command is focused on support to the Federal Government of Somalia and helping them end al-Shabaab‘s brutal ambitions and treatment of the Somali people," said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Bill Gayler, director of operations, U.S. Africa Command, in a statement to American Military News on Monday.

"Striking al-Shabaab leadership, fighters, facilities and areas of operations is one of the ways we continue to pressure their network," Gayler added.

Blast outside U.S. Embassy in Tunisia kills policeman
TUNIS (Reuters) - Two militants on a motorbike blew themselves up outside the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia on Friday, killing a policeman and wounding several in the North African country’s most serious attack in months.

The explosion took place near the embassy’s main gate, where a Reuters journalist saw a scorched, damaged motorbike and a damaged police vehicle lying amid debris as police gathered around and a helicopter whirled overhead.

No group immediately claimed responsibility.

The Interior Ministry said two militants were killed carrying out the attack and five police were wounded, while a civilian suffered minor injuries. State news agency TAP reported that one policeman was killed.

"We heard a very powerful explosion ... we saw the remains of the terrorist lying on the ground after he went on the motorbike toward the police," said Amira, a shopkeeper.

The oldest (Fahd) served as king from 1982 to 2005; the second- and fourth-oldest (Sultan and Naif) served as crown prince but predeceased King Abdullah; and the sixth-oldest (Salman) succeeded Abdullah as king in 2015. With the 2017 death of Prince Abdul Rahman only the two youngest of the Seven (Salman and Ahmed) survive.

Iraq
Rocket exploded near Baghdad police station Thursday night
Follow up to this story from yesterday.
[Rudaw] At least one Katyusha rocket crashed into the Mansour district of western Baghdad near the fortified Green Zone late on Thursday, Iraqi security officials confirmed early Friday. There were no reports of casualties.

The Iraqi security media cell tweeted early on Friday that at least one rocket landed near a cop shoppe in the Mansour district.

The rocket appears to have been launched from the Amanah district on the other side of the Tigris River in eastern Baghdad.

Security forces searched the Amanah area and recovered four more rockets which had been prepared for launch.

They did not say who was responsible for the attack.

Late on Thursday, Rooters reported that three Katyusha rockets had been launched, with one striking near the entrance to the Green Zone, another close to the Ottoman Turkish embassy, and a third landing outside the Green Zone.

It is likely the rockets were all intended to strike the Green Zone.

Baghdad has seen several rocket attacks in the recent months, most of them targeting the Green Zone, which hosts several Iraqi government ministries, the federal parliament, and foreign diplomatic missions including the sprawling US embassy compound.

It is also home to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Union III, also known as al-Tawheed al-Thalith, the main headquarters of the global coalition to defeat the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group (ISIS). The facility was hit in a rocket attack last month.

Following months of heightened tensions between the US and Iraq’s influential neighbour Iran, rocket attacks on US infrastructure and personnel in the Green Zone and elsewhere in Iraq have become increasingly frequent.

US officials accuse Iran-backed Iraqi militias of launching the attacks.

There are roughly 5,000 US troops stationed in Iraq alongside several NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
forces advising and assisting Iraqi and Kurdish forces in the fight against ISIS remnants.

The presence of US troops in Iraq has always been contentious for Shiite political parties and Iran-backed Shiite paramilitias.

Iraqi forces cleanse rugged areas in Diyala province of Daesh
[PRESSTV] Iraqi forces have now ensured security in several rugged areas in the eastern province of Diyala following an offensive to hunt down the remnants of the ISIS Takfiri

terrorists.

Sabah al-Naaman, front man for Iraq’s Counter Terrorism Service (CTS), said on Friday that police forces along with allied fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units, better known by the Arabic word Hashd al-Sha’abi, had destroyed enemy hideouts in Khanaqin district as well as the Hamrin Mountains.

Naaman said nearly 40 hard boyz had been killed over the past three days.

Last week, Hashd al-Sha’abi launched a major operation in the western countryside of Anbar province to hunt down the ISIS remnants.
