Loaded gun found in jail where Jeffrey Epstein killed himself
[FoxNews] Federal investigators found a loaded gun Thursday that had been smuggled into the jail where Jeffrey Epstein killed himself last summer, following a weeklong lockdown that turned up other contraband and led to a criminal probe into guard misconduct, the federal Bureau of Prisons told The Associated Press.

The handgun was located by Bureau of Prisons officers inside a housing unit at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, prison officials said in a statement to the AP. It marked a massive breach of protocol and raised serious questions about the security practices in place at the Bureau of Prisons, which is responsible for more than 175,000 federal inmates, and specifically at the jail, which had been billed as one of the most secure in America. Officials have not said where specifically the gun had been found, or how it had been smuggled inside the jail.

Meanwhile, federal prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into potential misconduct by guards, focusing on the flow of contraband into the lockup uncovered during the search for the gun, three people familiar with the matter told the AP. They were not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Attorney General William Barr named a new director last week to take charge of the agency, which has been the subject of intense scrutiny since Epstein took his own life while in custody in August. But the agency has been plagued for years by serious misconduct, violence and a chronic staffing shortage.

Since then, officials have been keeping inmates locked down in their cells without access to their lawyers and canceled all visitation at the jail, which houses about 700 inmates. In the past few days, officers have searched the facility and uncovered a sizable amount of contraband, including cellphones, narcotics and homemade weapons, the Bureau of Prisons said.

Teens beat up 15-year-old girl and steal her Air Jordans in Brooklyn
[NYPOST] A group of teenagers beat up a 15-year-old girl and stole her Air Jordan sneakers during a robbery in Brooklyn, surveillance footage released by cops on Friday shows.

The teenager was walking on Utica Avenue near Sterling Place in Crown Heights at 4:10 p.m. Thursday when she was spotted by the dozen youths, cops said.

When she reached the corner, the gang lunged at her and punched and kicked her repeatedly, the video shows.

The clip begins with the victim already on the ground, one of the boys kicking her in the chest and face. A second later, more kids run across the street and continue to beat her up, with one kid leaping onto her and then kicking her in the head, the footage shows.

The appalling 20-second beatdown ends with one kid yanking the victim’s black and white Air Jordan 1s from her feet and leaving her limp on the ground, the footage shows. They also took her cellphone and debit card before running away in several directions, police said.

She was taken to NYC Health & Hospitals/Kings County to be treated for bruising and head trauma, cops said. It was unclear what provoked the attack.

Update: Police were questioning five suspects and have a motive in the vicious mob beating of a 15-year-old girl on a Brooklyn street, law enforcement sources said Friday.

Cops were grilling the teenage boys in Crown Heights Friday after a group of teens savagely attacked the girl Thursday — as retaliation for a fight she got into earlier in the day, according to the sources.

The caught-on-camera beating unfolded after the girl allegedly beat up another girl earlier in the day at school, according to the sources.

The group of teenage attackers were allegedly friends with the girl who the victim had tussled with, law enforcement sources said.

Capt. Kristin ‘Beo' Wolfe becomes first female pilot to lead Air Force's F-35A Demonstration Team
[American Military News] Following official certification by the commander of Air Combat Command, Gen. Mike Holmes, Capt. Kristin "BEO" Wolfe has taken over as the new F-35A Demonstration Team’s pilot and commander for the 2020 and 2021 air show season, Feb. 29, 2020.

The certification took place during the Air Force’s Heritage Flight Training Course at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., an annual training event for all of the Air Force’s single-ship aerial demonstration teams. As part of the transition of the demonstration team from a training wing to a combat wing, Capt. Wolfe was selected due to her flight experience and leadership abilities. Prior to her selection, Wolfe served as an instructor pilot for the 388th Fighter Wing.

"We are extremely proud to have Capt Wolfe leading the new F-35A Demonstration Team," said Col. Steven Behmer, 388th Fighter Wing commander. "She’s an incredibly accomplished pilot and we can’t wait to see her and the team showcase the capabilities of our Wing and the F-35s to the world."

"It’s extremely humbling and rewarding to get the opportunity to showcase the F-35A at so many different locations," Wolfe said. "It’s a privilege to work with the best airmen from Hill Air Force Base, and to give people a small glimpse of what this jet is capable of."

Additionally, Wolfe will also lead the team in performances alongside the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation to showcase our heritage and legacy by flying the F-35A in formation with World War II, Korean, and Vietnam-era heritage aircraft.

O.J. Simpson heads to Costco to join panic buyers by stockpiling toilet paper and water amid coronavirus fears
[MAIL] O.J. Simpson posted a photo of himself on Twitter early Friday morning wearing a face mask outside a Costco with a trolley full of emergency supplies (left). The caption read: 'Coronavirus? Who's afraid?'. Simpson's post sparked a lot of attention on social media, with users comparing his suspected 'death rate' to that of coronavirus. 'I may have a better chance of being killed by you than the virus,' one person tweeted. Shoppers across the US are stockpiling amid coronavirus fears, as the death toll continues to mount, reaching 17 Friday.

Coronavirus roundup: Global known infections pass 100,000, mostly because of Iran
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Why is customs STILL NOT screening passengers from coronavirus hot-spots Italy, Iran and South Korea who arrive at major airports, including JFK, LAX, Atlanta and Chicago's O'Hare?
  • [Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The CDC is only mandating screening in the US for flights from Iran and China

  • People from Iran, Italy and South Korea are meant to be screened before they board their flights

  • Whether or not that is actually happening is of concern; several people have been able to return to the US from Italy recently with the virus

  • One Vice journalist says she walked through JFK on Thursday after returning from Milan - Italy's virus epicenter - without anyone stopping her

  • On top of that, it's unclear what the screening is meant to look like and if it will be effective

  • Many of the people now diagnosed with coronavirus in the US do not have symptoms, so it's unclear if a temperature check would be sufficient

  • New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has asked people returning from all five countries to self-isolate for 14 days as a precaution

Reddit: The WHO sent 25 international experts to China and here are their main findings after 9 days

Global Coronavirus Infections Pass 100,000
[AnNahar] Coronavirus has infected more than 100,000 people across 91 countries globally, according to an AFP tally Friday.

The death toll reached 3,407, while the total number of infections hit 100,002, after a surge in cases worldwide since Thursday at 1700 GMT, notably in virus hotspot Iran which clocked 1,234 new cases.

China -- excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macau -- where the epidemic emerged at the end of December, had 80,552 cases, of which 3,042 were fatal. There were 143 new infections and 30 deaths there since 1700 GMT Thursday.

Outside China, a total of 19,450 cases have been recorded around the world since the epidemic began, including 365 deaths.

There have been 2,349 new cases and 31 new deaths outside China since 1700 GMT Thursday.

The most affected countries after China are: South Korea (6,284 cases, 42 deaths), Italy (3,858 cases, 148 deaths), Iran (4,747 cases, 124 deaths) and France (577 cases, nine deaths).

Since Thursday 1700 GMT, China, South Korea, France, Spain and the Netherlands have recorded new deaths.

Serbia, the Vatican, Slovakia, Peru and Bhutan have confirmed the first cases on their soil.

Asia has recorded a total at 1500 GMT Friday of 88,388 cases (3,101 deaths), Europe 6,284 cases (165 deaths), Middle East 4,993 cases (127 deaths), US and Canada 194 cases (12 deaths), Oceania 68 cases (two deaths), Latin America and the Caribbean 34 cases, Africa 41 cases.

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).

#10  It is difficult to sort out the hype from the reality. The MSM hypes COVID-19. The risks may be another thing--it doesn't seem to be another Black Plague or even a flu epidemic such as 1917. Death rate is high but average age od fatalities is 82 or so, and only 5% of fatalities had no other illness when the virus hit them.

Protecting old folks means you'll bring down the fatality rate. Sealing of entire provinces is nonsense.

Sacked DR Congo general died by 'hanging': president
[Soweto Live] DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi ordered a probe into Delphin Kahimbi's death.

DR Congo's sacked former deputy chief of military intelligence, who was under European Union sanctions, died by hanging, President Felix Tshisekedi said Saturday.

Delphin Kahimbi, 50, a close associate of former president Joseph Kabila, had died of a heart attack on February 28 at home in Kinshasa, his wife and media reports said.

But rumours abounded that he was killed or committed suicide.

Tshisekedi ordered a probe into the death, and the preliminary findings were made public on Saturday after a cabinet meeting.

"According to the evidence ... it turns out to be a hanging," a statement quoted the president as saying.

Ireland records first-ever venomous snakebite

[Fox News] - Legend has it that St. Patrick drove all of the snakes out of Ireland and into the sea using the power of his faith.

A Dublin man is hoping for some of that power for himself after he reportedly fell victim of a venomous snakebite ‐ believed to be the first time such an event has been recorded in Ireland.

The 22-year-old, who owned a venomous puff adder, was treated with anti-venom in Connolly Hospital, the Irish Post reported last month.

Russian Ports to Disinfect Ships Arriving from Virus-Hit Countries
Better not let anyone go on shore leave.
[gCaptain] Russia has ordered the mandatory disinfection of ships arriving at the Black Sea ports of Novorossiisk and Yuzhnaya Ozereyevka from Iran, Italy and South Korea because of the coronavirus, a document seen by Reuters showed.

A branch of Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s consumer safety watchdog, has ordered port agents “to arrange the disinfection of ships arriving from these countries before the border is opened” in the city of Novorossiisk, the document showed.

Novorossiisk port is one of the biggest on the Black Sea. It handles grain, coal, mineral fertilizers, timber, oil and oil products, containers, food and chemical cargoes.

Rospotrebnadzor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A source in Novorossiisk who is familiar with the matter told Reuters “not many” ships were arriving from the countries identified “but delays are obviously possible” in processing those that do.

It was not immediately clear how the vessels would be disinfected, the source said.

Russian pipeline monopoly Transneft gained control of the Novorossiisk Commercial Sea Port Group (NCSP) in 2018.

The Yuzhnaya Ozereyevka terminal is the end point of the CPC trunk oil pipeline that connects the Tengiz field in Kazakhstan, and a number of other fields, to the sea terminal near the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiisk.

Transneft said on Thursday it had suspended business trips for its staff due to the coronavirus outbreak, Interfax news agency reported.

Pres. Trump names North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows as Chief of Staff
[Reuters] President Donald Trump parted ways on Friday with acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and replaced him with conservative lawmaker and close ally Mark Meadows, who was a strong Trump defender during the Democratic impeachment drive.

Representative Meadows takes over as the White House struggles to advance a consistent message about the coronavirus crisis and as Trump goes into a bruising re-election contest.

He becomes the fourth chief of staff in Trump’s three years in office, tasked with attempting to bring order to a chaotic presidency.

Meadows is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina and was a combative defender of the president during the impeachment saga, so much so that Trump singled him out for praise at a Feb. 6 event after the Republican-led Senate acquitted the president.

"He’s a tremendously talented man, not just as a politician. As a human being, he’s incredible," Trump said at the time.

#4  Two thirds of the Pakistani Federal revenue goes to service interest payments on debts. The other third goes to military spending. This year like last, the spending on these two items is greater than revenue. Payment of pensions is in the civilian budget but 76% of pensions go to retired military. Those pension payments are equivalent to more than a third of revenue. So Pakistani liabilities exceed revenue. The entire budget is basically being met by borrowing.

IHC throws out petition seeking to stop Aurat March
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday dismissed a petition seeking to restrict the Aurat March as non-maintainable and not justiciable.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah dismissed the petition saying the right of assembly is a fundamental right but he stated that the court expects that the participants of the march will exercise their rights in accordance with the law.

While dismissing the petition, the top judge highlighted the following points:
  • Courts across the country are inundated with litigation brought by women against the denial of their inheritance rights. "Mothers, sisters and daughters are denied their rights which have been expressly given to them by Almighty Allah in unambiguous terms."

  • In this context, and in view of widespread violence prevalent against women in the country, the International Women’s Day should be observed as "a day of introspection".

  • "The petitioners and citizens are expected to take [the march] as an opportunity to introspect and demonstrably show outrage against the practices, which are flagrantly offensive to the injunctions of Islam e.g. mindsets that do not welcome the birth of a female child, honour killings, rape, practices such as wani, swara, karo-kari, etc. If this happens, then many innocent 'Zainabs' will be saved from being treated savagely."

  • The words used in Aurat March slogans "should not be given meanings according to the mindset of a certain section of society and that too, contrary to the explanation given by the proponents of the march".

  • "Tribal patriarchal traditions and societal norms, based on egos and obscure insecurities [...] have to be defeated through collective struggle so that no mother, sister or daughter suffers the agony of litigation to assert rights of inheritance nor innocent 'Zainabs' have to endure unthinkable pain and agony."

The court had earlier in the day reserved its verdict on the maintainability of the petition, while questioning the petitioners' interpretation of slogans they had objected to.

Pemra advises TV channels to refrain from airing 'controversial content' on Women's Day
[DAWN] The Pakistain Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Friday issued an advisory pertaining to coverage of International Women's Day ‐ commemorated on March 8 ‐ and warned TV channels against airing "unethical slogans, play cards (sic) with objectionable content".

The advisory pointed out that the Lahore High Court (LHC) had issued conditional permission for the Aurat March, which is to be held on occasion of the International Women's Day. In pursuance of the high court's order, the Pemra advisory stated that some channels had "aired controversial content with special reference to the slogan relating (sic) to Aurat March".

The regulatory body urged channels to be "mindful of the fact that telecast of such controversial content is against the commonly accepted standards of decency as well as religious, social, cultural norms and sentiments of public".

"Furthermore, the airing of such vulgar/inappropriate content is not suitable for viewing on TV channels," the advisory read.

The notification did not elaborate on what kind of content would qualify as "controversial" or "vulgar". It also did not specify the objectionable slogan it referred to in the advisory.

About 400 released from coronavirus quarantine in Iraqi Kurdistan Thursday

Nearly 300 Kurdistan Region returnees from Iran cleared to leave coronavirus quarantine in Soran province

[Rudaw] Nearly 300 people quarantined for two weeks upon return from coronavirus-hit Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan, the abbreviation IRGC is a cognate form of Stürmabteilung (or SA), the term Supreme Guide is a cognate form of either Shah or Führer or maybe both, and they hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
were on Thursday cleared to return home by Kurdish health officials, in a first for the Kurdistan Region since the outbreak began.

All 283 people held at three different quarantine sites in Soran province bordering Iran have been declared clear of any coronavirus symptoms.

"A total of 283 individuals who were quarantined in three different locations of Soran will be let home today," Karwan Jamal, head of Soran’s Health Department told Rudaw.

"All of them underwent medical tests for 14 consecutive days, twice a day," Jamal said. "Thankfully, they are all safe and did not show any signs of coronavirus."

A second group of 111 people "will be allowed home tomorrow (Friday)," he added.

Those who have left quarantine should still take health precautions, Jamal said, advising that they "check on their health and not visit crowded places for another two weeks."

"People are returning from Iran on a daily basis, so we have dedicated a place in Soran to quarantine the new returnees," he added, though returnee numbers from Iran have "dropped significantly" in the last fortnight.

Kurdish and Iraqi authorities have closed their borders with Iran and canceled direct flights serving Iranian cities, and Iraqi citizens returning from Iran must undergo 14 days in quarantine.

"According to our data, 10 to 15 people are returning daily," Jamal said.

According to health ministry figures, 2,303 people remain in quarantine across 27 Kurdistan Region locations.

Besides quarantine, KRG measures to prevent spread of the virus has included the shutdown of schools, a reduction in working hours across government institutions, and a ban on large public gatherings.

Total confirmed cases in Iraq stand at 37, according to data from Iraqi and KRG health authorities. All eight Kurdistan Region cases have been recorded in the city of Sulaimani.

Coronavirus: 116 people released from quarantine in Sulaimani province

[Rudaw] Sulaimani authorities released 116 people from quarantine on Thursday after doctors concluded those under observation had not contracted the coronavirus.

The patients were held at the Sanarya tourist village just west of Sulaimani city for a period of two weeks after returning from Iran, where a major outbreak of COVID-19 has killed at least 124 people and infected more than 3,500 as of Friday afternoon.

Pope accepts resignation of French cardinal Barbarin amid sex abuse case
[France24] Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a French cardinal who failed to report an alleged paedophile priest, the Catholic Church in Lyon said Friday.

Archbishop of Lyon Philippe Barbarin is the most senior French priest to be caught up in a global paedophilia scandal that has seen clergy hauled before courts from Argentina to Australia.

Barbarin, 69, a staunch conservative who became archbishop of the French city in 2002, has long been accused by victims' groups of turning a blind eye to decades of child abuse in his diocese that blighted many lives.

He was convicted last year of not reporting a priest for allegedly abused dozens of boy scouts in the 1980s and 1990s -- but the conviction was overturned on appeal in January.

Appeals judges said Barbarin should have reported the priest but found that he could not be held criminally liable because the incidents happened too long ago.

#1  What it has done is drive peaking plants out of business. The best a peaking plant can do is provide power in 2 seconds. This can provide it in milli-seconds.
So what the base power plants are doing is to run at above the lowest load. The lows are where the battery is charged and it discharges in the peaks. This has smoothed the short term stuff out enough that the base plant can gradually increase if more power is needed. This was not the initial intent but ends up being much more useful and interesting than the initial intent.

#4  Lies, lies, lies...

First off, Tesla wound up buying the batteries from Samsung rather than building them themselves, because they couldn't make the deadline.

Second, because of this their design input was pretty limited,

Third, the "Well, it's good for keeping all the power phase synchronized" is a face-saving half truth, because it doesn't really save all that much money and isn't really a big help when the big problem is the state was short on generating power to begin with. It wasn't being caused by problems with the grid, it was because of a lack of reliable generation.

You point this out, and the Tesla fanbois insult you, or go away for a while, but then wait a couple weeks and start up the same argument they avoided defending last time...

President Trump To Begin Withholding Federal Funding From Sanctuary Cities
[California Globe] On Thursday, President Trump said his administration will start withholding federal funding from “sanctuary cities” after a federal court ruled last week that it could do so.

“As per recent Federal Court ruling, the Federal Government will be withholding funds from Sanctuary Cities. They should change their status and go non-Sanctuary. Do not protect criminals!” the President announced on Twitter.

A federal appeals court in Manhattan ruled on Feb. 26 ruled that the Department of Justice could withhold funding from cities and states that refuse to cooperate with the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants, the Hill reported. “The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously overturned a district court judge’s ruling that the department lacked the authority to impose immigration-related conditions on certain funding.”

“The panel’s opinion, written by Judge Reena Raggi, found that Congress had delegated authority to the attorney general to set conditions on the federal grant program it had created, called the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.”

California is a Sanctuary State.

Olive Garden customer demanded and got white server, worker says
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Olive Garden has fired the manager of one of its restaurants in southwestern Indiana who was accused of complying with a white customer's demand to replace her table's black server with one who wasn't black.

An Olive Garden spokeswoman, Meagan Bernstein, said Wednesday that the company does not tolerate discrimination and decided to "separate with the manager involved" after completing its investigation of the incident last weekend at its restaurant in Evansville.

Amira Donahue, a black 16-year-old host at the restaurant that night, said a woman seated with a group of customers, including two children, requested that the table's black server be replaced with a non-black one and began screaming before a manager acquiesced to her demands.

"She made comments about me to my co-workers concerning my race and saying that I should work at a strip club instead," Donahue told NBC News on Wednesday. "She asked if I'm even black and if I am from here."

Donahue told the Evansville Courier & Press that she and the server, who she said wasn't ready to speak to the media yet, "were both in tears for most of the day because it was just surprising."

Maxwell Robbins, a customer who witnessed the incident, said it was so disturbing that he documented it in a Facebook post and submitted multiple complaints to Olive Garden by phone.

Robbins, 22, said the manager complied with the customer's demand for a white server without hesitation, writing in his post that the manager's decision was "disgusting," especially considering the diverse staff at the restaurant in the city about 170 miles (270 kilometers) southwest of Indianapolis.
