The Zimbabwean government has taken control of one of the country's leading food processors by buying out US firm HJ Heinz. The state will buy Heinz's 49% stake in Olivine Industries, which makes cooking oils, fats and soaps, for a fraction of its worth $6.8m. Heinz has been present in Zimbabwe for more than 25 years. The firm was one of the first foreign businesses to invest in the country after its independence in 1980.
The change in Olivine's ownership will see Cottco, the state-controlled cotton buying and processing enterprise, take control of the business. "This acquisition will add critical mass to the company while allowing the company to diversify from its traditional revenue streams and operating risks," said Pius Manamike, Cottco's company spokestoad secretary.
New laws which would force foreign-owned businesses to sell a majority stake in their operations to black-owned Zimbabwean firms are set to come into force within months. Officials said the Olivine deal had been under discussions for some time and pre-dated the planned shift in ownership rules.

Police in Bangladesh arrested former prime minister Khaleda Zia and one of her sons on Monday on charges of corruption and misuse of power, officials said. Zia told a Dhaka court that she and her son are innocent. But she was jailed pending trial and her son, Arafat Rahman, was ordered held by police for seven days for questioning. This is a conspiracy to tarnish the image of my family and my party, Zia said. We have done nothing wrong. This case against us must be lifted.
From the court, Zia, escorted by hundreds of police, was taken to a makeshift prison near the parliament building. Her prison is just a few blocks from where her archrival and another ex-premier, Sheikh Hasina, has been held since July on extortion charges.
The officials arrested Zia at her home in the Bangladeshi capital hours after a case was filed by an anti-corruption official against her and her youngest son, Arafat Rahman Coco, Dhaka Metropolitan Police official Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman told The Associated Press by phone. Zia, who ended her five-year term in October, is accused of misusing her power by awarding contracts to a local company, Global Agro Trade Company, when she was in office in 2003. Coco allegedly influenced his mother to approve the deal. The complaint said Zias administration did not follow standard procedure in awarding the company work involving two cargo terminals, one in Dhakas Kamlapur Railway Station and another in the countrys main Chittagong seaport.
Officials could not immediately be reached for comment. A case was filed separately late on Sunday against Hasina on charges of taking a bribe in return to allow a company to build a power plant when she was in power in 1997, a police official said. She and her Awami League party denied the allegation.
Some analysts see the arrest of Zia and Hasina as politically motivated. The arrests of the two leaders indicate that the campaign is more politically motivated than targeting corruption, said Bazlur Rahman, editor of Dhakas Sangbad daily. It now seems that they (the government) want to weaken the two large political parties to prevent them from winning the next election. I think the government wants to hold the election, but a hand-picked parliament is what it wants, he said.
According to Rahman the emergency rule in the country may be prolonged until the polls, planned for next year, are held.

A woman joins the protectors of the Crown Jewels on Monday as one of the famous Beefeaters at the Tower of London.
Moira Cameron is the first woman to serve as a Yeoman Warder at the tower since the corps of Tower guards was created in 1485. Cameron, a Warrant Officer Class 2 who joined the army at age 16, was selected over five men who also applied for the vacancy.
Candidates must have been a Warrant Officer or senior noncommissioned officer, have served at least 22 years in the army, Royal Air Force or Royal Marines and hold the Long Service and Good Conduct medal. There are 35 Yeoman Warders at the Tower plus the Chief Yeoman Warder and Yeoman Gaoler.

Just 10 years ago the Australian Navy dropped sonar-buoys in front of the newly built destroyer INS Delhi. There were complaints over the Indian Navy's Tu-142 Bear-F patrol aircraft off the Aussie coast.
Thanks to George Bush and Condi Rice, things are much different... an alliance is being born. Delhi class warships are exercising with Australian ships. Australia is set to become a major supplier of Uranium ore to India.
On Wednesday joint Australian and Indian army mountain warfare teams will climb Himalayan peaks in Uttarakhand.

Naval war machines from five nations nearing Bay of Bengal
New Delhi, Sept. 2 (PTI): Notwithstanding protests by the Left parties, powerful warships from five nations today started nearing a rendezvous point in the Bay of Bengal for the start of the biggest naval wargame hosted by India.
The four-day wargame set to begin early on Tuesday will see a flotilla of 26 warships, including aircraft carriers, missile frigates and destroyers, in intense action.
Nine of the 13 US warships taking part in the exercises, including nuclear-powered carrier USS Nimitz, conventional carrier USS Kitty Hawk and nuclear submarine USN Chicago, have reached the exercise point located 180 nautical miles from Vishakhapatnam, almost mid-way to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
A missile frigate from the Singapore Navy and eight Indian warships led by the country's sole aircraft carrier INS Viraat have also reached the spot.
Two warships each from Australia and Japan are also close to the spot, naval officials said.
The wargame is being held just 30 to 40 nautical miles from Myanmar's Coco Islands, where the Chinese Navy is reportedly building a naval base.

IIRC the Coco Islands were given to Burma by the Indian PM Nehru, one of his many blunders.
The Chinese built a listening post there, to spy on India. The Asian tsunami reportedly damaged it severely and Germany is not willing to replace the equipment it originally sold China.

The Chinese military hacked into a Pentagon computer network in June in the most successful cyber attack on the US defence department, say American officials. The Pentagon acknowledged shutting down part of a computer system serving the office of Robert Gates, defence secretary, but declined to say who it believed was behind the attack.
Current and former officials have told the Financial Times an internal investigation has revealed that the incursion came from the Peoples Liberation Army. One senior US official said the Pentagon had pinpointed the exact origins of the attack. Another person familiar with the event said there was a very high level of confidence...trending towards total certainty that the PLA was responsible. The defence ministry in Beijing declined to comment on Monday.

Angela Merkel, Germanys chancellor, raised reports of Chinese infiltration of German government computers with Wen Jiabao, Chinas premier, in a visit to Beijing, after which the Chinese foreign ministry said the government opposed and forbade any criminal acts undermining computer systems, including hacking.
We have explicit laws and regulations in this regard, said Jiang Yu, from the ministry. Hacking is a global issue and China is frequently a victim.
George W. Bush, US president, is due to meet Hu Jintao, Chinas president, on Thursday in Australia prior to the Apec summit.
The PLA regularly probes US military networks and the Pentagon is widely assumed to scan Chinese networks but US officials said the penetration in June raised concerns to a new level because of fears that China had shown it could disrupt systems at critical times. The PLA has demonstrated the ability to conduct attacks that disable our system...and the ability in a conflict situation to re-enter and disrupt on a very large scale, said a former official, who said the PLA had penetrated the networks of US defence companies and think-tanks.
Hackers from numerous locations in China spent several months probing the Pentagon system before overcoming its defences, according to people familiar with the matter. The Pentagon took down the network for more than a week while the attacks continued, and is to conduct a comprehensive diagnosis. These are multiple wake-up calls stirring us to levels of more aggressive vigilance, said Richard Lawless, the Pentagons top Asia official at the time of the attacks.
The Pentagon is still investigating how much data was downloaded, but one person with knowledge of the attack said most of the information was probably unclassified. He said the event had forced officials to reconsider the kind of information they send over unsecured e-mail systems.
John Hamre, a Clinton-era deputy defence secretary involved with cyber security, said that while he had no knowledge of the June attack, criminal groups sometimes masked cyber attacks to make it appear they came from government computers in a particular country.
The National Security Council said the White House had created a team of experts to consider whether the administration needed to restrict the use of BlackBerries because of concerns about cyber espionage.

Spain's Interior Ministry will authorize police to dress undocumented immigrants in straitjackets and helmets during repatriation flights, the daily El Pais reported Monday.

Police may resort to the measures when they deem it necessary to protect illegal immigrants from hurting themselves in attempts to prevent their expulsion. Police may not drug immigrants or use disproportionate violence, according to new guidelines prepared by the ministry, which were described as being in line with Council of Europe norms. The new guidelines were prepared after a Nigerian immigrant died during a repatriation flight in June. Osamuyia Aikpitanhi had been handcuffed and gagged. Police said he had violently resisted his expulsion.

This has proved a major problem for european polices, even with the meager stream of repatriations vs the flow of entries; expulsees scream and make a scene, sometimes, the other passengers come to their help (either out of white guilt/PC brainwashing for europeans, or out of solidarity with flights filled with compatriots), and this has led to many a captain refusing to take off, and even to bodily injuries to police officers... not only is this very costly, but it's very unpractical.
Also, there have been several cases of police officers being assaulted in the repatriation countries, this has happened just recently to six french policemen in conakry, guinea, who were beaten up by a mob including two local policemen supposedly there to keep the delivery of the expulsee safe, and this is not new, I remember reading about a policeman who lost an eye in a similar assault, quite some years ago already.
By the way, this shows the loss of prestige of western/european institutions in "developing" countries, as this type of disrespect would have been unthinkable only 30-40 years ago.

"I never knew how he made a living or anything, but I was shocked," said Clinton of Hsu, who has made millions as an investor in tetxtile and other businesses.
Hsu has been a fugitive after being accused of fraud in the early 1990s in San Mateo, Calif. Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Hillary Clinton donated $23,000 in Hsu contributions after his criminal history was revealed by the Los Angeles Times last week.
Clinton said it wasn't necessary to return $100,000 or more collected by Hsu from other donors. "I think she did the right thing giving the money back pending resolution of his case," Clinton added. "If the other people say they gave the money of their own accord then I think she should keep it."

Exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif vowed to fight terrorism with conviction if re-elected and accused President Pervez Musharraf of deceiving the West over his commitment.
Sharif plans to return to Islamabad next week to challenge the president, who is under pressure from the West to stand down as head of the army before seeking re-election. An influential group of Muslim clerics from Indonesias largest Islamic movement has declared the governments nuclear plans for earthquake-prone Java as sinful under Islam, a cleric said on Monday.
Some 150 clerics from Central Java, where the government plans to build its first nuclear power plant, met over the weekend, said Nuruddin Amin. The meeting concluded that a nuclear power plant would create danger for the local population outweighing the benefits it would bring, and therefore the meeting agreed to declare it as haram, Amin told AFP. The Islamic term refers to something unacceptable, forbidden or sinful.
He said that the district level decision would now be recommended to the regional chapter and then national headquarters of their clerical group. We hope that eventually a recommendation could be passed on to the government, Amin added.
The government, pressed to boost energy supplies to the worlds fourth most populous nation, plans to build its first plant on the foothills of Mount Muria, a dormant volcano. Jakarta shelved plans to develop atomic energy in 1997 in the face of mounting public opposition, the discovery of a large gas field and a shortage of funds. But the idea resurfaced in 2005 amid increasing power shortages and a government drive to develop and diversify energy resources.

Amazingly enough, I find myself agreeing with the turbans that the idea of placing a plant on the foothills of a volcano in a populated area seems stupid enough to be haram in the unacceptable sense of the word, if that's indeed a proper translation of the term. TEHERAN, Iran - Iran has increasingly turned to Russia to replace its aging US and European-made airliners, a response to US sanctions that affect the countrys aviation industry, the official IRNA news agency reported Monday.
Aviation chief Saeed Hesami said Russian planes were Irans best option, according to IRNA, despite a string of crashes in recent years involving Russian-made aircraft that have killed hundreds of people. 'We have no option but to buy Russian planes because we have to meet the air transportation needs of the nation, Hesami was quoted as saying by IRNA. 'Iran wont allow ... US sanctions to ground its aviation fleet.
US sanctions ban the export of advanced technology to Iran, including spare parts for its fleet of U.S.-built Boeing aircraft. Pressure from Washington has also limited the transfer of equipment for Irans European-made Airbus planes. In 2002, Irans transportation minister at the time, Ahmad Khorram, told parliament that Irans air industry had reached a crisis point and was suffering from US sanctions.
Iran has sought to purchase new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus in recent years, but has been rebuffed, leading the Islamic Republic to buy or lease jets from Russia. Last month, Teheran finalized the purchase of five Tupolov-204 planes, which Hesami said were more advanced than the Tupolov-154 aircraft currently owned by Iran.
Because nothing screams quality flying like Tupolov.
There have been several major plane crashes in recent years involving Russian aircraft, the most recent in 2003, when a Russian-made Ilyushin plane crashed in bad weather into a mountain in southeastern Iran, killing some 300 members of the elite Revolutionary Guards.

LONDON (Reuters) - Rock stars -- notorious for their "crash and burn" lifestyles -- really are more likely than other people to die before reaching old age. Oh, yeah? Two words: Keith Richards...
A study of more than 1,000 mainly British and North American artists, spanning the era from Elvis Presley to rapper Eminem, found they were two to three times more likely to suffer a premature death than the general population. Between 1956 and 2005 there were 100 deaths among the 1,064 musicians examined by researchers at the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University.
As well as Presley, the toll of those dying before their time included Doors singer Jim Morrison, guitar hero Jimi Hendrix, T Rex star Marc Bolan and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. OD, OD, I forget, ate a shotgun...
More than a quarter of all the deaths were related to drugs or alcohol abuse, said the study in the Journal of Epidemial Community Health. ...and fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
"The paper clearly describes a population of rock and pop stars who are at a disproportionate risk of alcohol and drug related deaths," said Mark Bellis, lead author of the study. And how much did this thought provoking study cost? He said the study raised questions about the suitability of using rock stars for public health messages such as anti-drug campaigns when their own lifestyle was so dangerous. C'mon, guys! We've gotta come up with some reasons for this phony baloney study!
"In the music industry, factors such as stress, changes from popularity to obscurity, and exposure to environments where alcohol and drugs are easily available, can all contribute to substance use as well as other self-destructive behaviors," the report said. Wow. How thought provoking...
It found that musicians were most at risk in the first five years after achieving fame, with death rates more than three times higher than normal. Hendrix, Bon Scott of AC/DC and punk rocker Sid Vicious all died within five years of hitting the big time, said Bellis. I'm poor. Now I'm rich. And people keep feeding me drugs...
Among British artists the risk of dying remains high until around 25 years after their first success, when they return to near normal life expectancy. That bodes well for rock survivors like The Who's 63-year-old Roger Daltrey, who famously first sang "I hope I die before I get old" in the song "My Generation" back in 1965.
But this trend was not found in North America, where aging rockers remain almost twice as likely to suffer a premature demise, particularly from heart attack or stroke. American stars Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys and Johnny Ramone of the Ramones all died in their 50s. Bellis suggested that the high death rate among older American musicians could be related to the continent's greater appetite for reunion tours, exposing the artists for more years to an unhealthy "rock'n'roll" lifestyle.
It could also be due to the poor medical outlook for impoverished American ex-pop stars who have no health insurance, he said. I'll bet that's probably Bush's fault...

Putting aside how recreational drug use is often used to stimulate an artist's creative side, I'm also inclined to speculate how self-medicating may be one way of overcoming stage fright. Face it, if you can still play music and sing after ingesting enough drugs to zone out a frat house, then stage fright is probably no longer an issue.
I don't know how many of you have gotten up and performed live on television, radio or at large public gatherings but the adrenaline rush is pretty intense. Self-medication is most likely used to counteract this heavy-duty emotional rollercoaster as well. "Spotlight addiction" is a pretty well-known malaise in the entertainment industry.
Of course, none of this excuses Jerry Garcia's prediliction for back-to-back Whoppers and pints of Ben & Jerry's ice cream or other such idiotic dietary intake regimens. Nor does it lessen in any way the incredible stupidity of purposefully instigating dangerous drug synergies such as combining depressants and alcohol.
A study found that individuals could ingest twice the usual amount of alcohol or depressants (but not both) and have no extreme risk of overdose. However, combining themeven at "regular" levels of intakequadrupled the chances of death from sudden liver failure, cessation of breathing or other autonomic system crashes. What's more, individuals who regularly combine alcohol and depressants are nonetheless still subject to totally unexpected and very lethal interactions. It is nothing short of playing Russian Roul*tte.
Anyone who is incredibly stupid enough to purposefully cause dangerous drug synergy as a form of recreational use has only themself to blame when they end up taking the dirt nap. Few behaviors are more avoidable or deadly.

Hey, France is 5th! not bad, considering about 24% of the work force is made of civil servants, who are not the most, er, industrious and productive workers around (IIRC, a rapport found a couple of years ago? that the actual work week was in the vicinity of 24-27 hours, assuming all the time spent at work is used to work, of course...).

We have to work longer to pay the taxes for the overcrowded schools, county emergency rooms, defaulted medical bills, etc, etc, etc. while they wire more money home to the family back home.
