Koran desacrated! Where is Islamic Rage Boy!?!
The Customs Collectorate, Rawalpindi, has recovered huge quantity of heroin and hashish, concealed in the Holy Quran and religious books being parcelled to United Kingdom (UK) through International Mail office, Customs sources told The News.

Collector Customs Muhammad Ashraf Khan and Additional Collector Dr Arsalaan, received information that a drug mafia active in Pakistan, was sending huge consignments through mail for a long time, the sources said adding, the authorities constituted a raiding party comprising deputy collector, Naveed Iqbal, superintendent Wasim Ahmad and inspectors Afaan Younas, Muhammad Ismail and Imtiaz Bhatti to conduct raids at International Mail offices in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The team during checking of parcels booked for England, found four parcels suspicious, the sources said and added the Holy Quran and religious books (Tafheem-ul-Quran) as well as garments were packed in the parcels.

During the search, the raiding party recovered 5.5 kilograms of hashish and 710 grams of heroin concealed in the cavities of the Holy Quran and Tafheem-ul-Quran, the sources said.

When a Muslim does it, especially to make money or some other holy purpose, it is ok.

Rotten meat used in thousands of kebabs
DONER kebab sales have slumped in Germany after a rotten meat scandal scared consumers away from the meal, a fast food staple so prevalent some regard it as the national dish.

In Berlin alone there are more than 1500 kebab stands and up to 40 tonnes a day of the meat dish, which originated in Turkey, is usually eaten.

Its popularity has been partly due to the large number of Turks living in Germany.

The debacle over doner kebabs erupted last week when a Bavarian wholesale meat producer confessed to passing off 180 tonnes of meat unfit for human consumption as quality produce and selling it to retailers across Germany.

Europe's doner kebab trade body said their members were being unfairly blamed by the media.

"Doner producers are being scapegoated for the ills of the meat-producing industry," said Ataveser Sir, Berlin-based president of the Association of Doner Producers in Europe.

Over the past several days German media has been flooded with gruesome stories of spoiled meat accompanied by pictures of unappetising doner kebabs.

Remzi Kaplan, owner of one of Germany's top kebab companies, said that only doner sellers were being targeted by the authorities and the media, even though all sorts of meat, including sausages and hamburgers, could be affected.

Mr Kaplan said sales were down by "at least" 10-15 per cent and Mr Sir agreed consumption had fallen, but said it was still to early to determine the precise drop.

The meal, which can be made of lamb, beef or chicken, comprises slices of meat compressed on a rotating skewer. The food is cooked as it turns and the meat is shaved off as required.

Neither Mr Sir nor Mr Kaplan would say whether there was an anti-Turkish aspect to the apparent campaign against doner meat.

Man arrested for stealing bridge
Russian police have detained a 45-year-old municipal worker for stealing a bridge. The 5-meter span metal bridge disappeared from a river crossing in the Ryazan region, east of Moscow. Police said they tracked it down to the man, who had used his work truck to remove it and then chopped it up and sold it for scrap. In a statement, Ryazan region police called it "the bulkiest theft of the year."

Religious books offending Islam sold in Algeria
Some religious books and publications in bookshops or displayed in streets include many extremist ideas, according to witnesses.

The president of a banned charity association in Algiers says there are books with extremist ideas that raise doubts over real Islam and the Prophet's sira (the Prophet’s biography). Some books say customs and taxes are forbidden in Islam while others insult the prophet’s wives.

Extremist books and publications were even found inside mosques and so, the religious affairs ministry is inspecting mosques and forbidding any religious book in mosques without permit, said communication director at the ministry Abdellah Tamine. In the same regard, the religious affairs minister’s advisor said the ministry is calling on citizens to notify it of any suspicious book.

#3  I don't know which books they have.

However, the most strict version of the Wahabi sect states that any compliance with a secular State (e.g., paying customs and taxes) is a form of polytheism (since it, in effect, makes the secular sovereign, even if he is a Moslem, in a position of taking money that would otherwise be available to support Islamic requirements)

#4  Insult to the fake prophet's wives is central to Shiite dogma. Caliph Ali was murdered by followers of Muhammed's family. Ali is believed to be connected to Muhammed as one of the first peoples of the "blood oath" (ahl-Bayt) to Islam. From our point of view, the Sunni-Shiite split should be viewed as a purely political matter between 2 sides that didn't want to share booty from the Muslim terror conquests. (The unholy koran is the only so-called "sacred" text that includes a chapter on Division of Booty; and captive women are sex booty to Muslim men)

Thugs Urinate on Clothes of Muslims
HATE CRIME YOBS TARGET MUSLIMS

Revolting thugs urinated on to shoes and clothes belonging to worshipping Muslims.
"Revolting"? Hey, thugs have feelings too.
Police are treating the incident as a hate crime against Bath's Muslim community and say they are determined to track down the perpetrators.

The two male offenders entered the lobby of the Bath Islamic Centre in Pierrepont Street during evening prayers, before urinating on clothing and shoes left in the entrance by worshippers.

Their mindless vandalism has disgusted members of the mosque and left the belongings of five people damaged.
Boo Hoo! Why do they hate us? Kaffir urinators are worse than suicide bombers.
In an attempt to bring those responsible to justice, Avon and Somerset police have now released CCTV images of the yobs.
Watch this get blown way out of proportion.
The unprovoked attack has shocked Muslim leaders and campaigners for racial equality in Bath...
Yeah, Muslims really want equality. Meanwhile, back in their home countries, the few remaining members of religious minorities are being persecuted.

Not at all mindless, I'd wager. Funny how something this trival "has disgusted members of the mosque" who just as probably cheered when Islamic fanatics flew fully loaded passenger airliners into occupied skyscrapers.

As to "vandalism", Islam remains the winner by far with its destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas. When Musilms eliminate racism in their own countries, only then can they come whinging to us. The farce is over.

Karima's dual 'conversion'
From the When 2 Worlds Collide Department:
Karima Tieleman's first 'conversion' was from male to female; six years later she converted to Islam. However, the acceptance she hoped to find has also proved to be sadly absent among her fellow believers. She believes it is her fate to be misunderstood and rejected for the rest of her life. Although she says she's happy with her life, she also admits that she sometimes tires of having to fight all the time.

Row, row, row your bo...er, belay that order, Mahmoud
Four Moroccans hoping to make an illicit crossing to Spain to join thousands of illegal migrants there suddenly found themselves alongside a US nuclear submarine, reports said Sunday.

Crew of the 110-metre-long USS San Juan discovered the Moroccans' flimsy boat bobbing at their side as the huge sub was easing out of Gibraltar, El Pais newspaper said.

The US crew informed Spanish coastguards via the submarine's base in distant Norfolk, Virginia, and a Spanish rescue boat was sent. However, a Moroccan patrol boat arrived first - and repatriated the would-be migrants.

Posted by: bigjim-ky || 09/04/2007 7:07 Comments || Top||

#5  It wasn't tourists; it was a Japanese trawler used for training. A kind of fishing school? Not trying to make a pun here; trying to be accurate. The sub surfaced under it near Pearl Harbor, sank the boat killing a dozen or so people. Sub commander was court martialed.

#7  We're talking about two different things. The sub in question in the case I cited was named after a city in the Carolinas, I think. Time to do some research.

#9  Sub sonar operators listen for propeller sounds and attempt to locate all surface ships. Therefore a surfacing sub should avoid popping up under or over a boat, however not all boats are under way. Apparently the Japanese trauler was stationary and 'invisable' to the sub. Any sailboat could meet such a fate on the high seas because they make no sound unless their engine is running. Chalk it up to fate.
Posted by: wxjames || 09/04/2007 11:40 Comments || Top||

#10  Part of the drill in surfacing a submarine in normal conditions is to use the periscope to look for shapes and shadows on the surface.
The Greenville was practicing an emergency surface drill (partially to show off for some visiting dignitaries) and apparently didn't check.
Posted by: Rambler || 09/04/2007 12:18 Comments || Top||

#11  I remember that the crew claims to have checked, but they didn't have a video log because the captain had ordered it turned off to improve resolution. (???)

I also understand that the Japanese trawler was full of kids learning the trade, and that the captain didn't see it because the boat was hidden behind a wave when the scope swept the area.

They blew the tanks and came up and hit the boat so hard that the people on the lower decks didn't have time to get out of the ship before it sank. The sub stayed and helped the survivors as best they could.

The captain was very repentant, even going to visit each of the families after his trial was over. He couldn't comment or apologize immediately because of our screwed up legal system here, leading to a lot of hard feelings at first, but they said they felt better after he visited them.

I understand the need to court martial the guy, but at the same time it was an accident and he did care deeply. Seems to me if he was allowed to stay on somehow, maybe in a different role, he would be about the most concientious captain in the Navy after that. Too bad.

That's what I remember.

#12  Nope. There are NO second chances when you command a nuclear-armed sub.
Posted by: mojo || 09/04/2007 16:30 Comments || Top||

#13  According to Wikipedia, Cdr Scott Waddle, the CO of the USS Greeneville when it struck and sank the Ehime Maru, was not court martialed. After a board of inquiry, he took full responsibility for the accident, even though there were errors committed by other crew members. Cdr Waddle was allowed to retire honorably. A truly standup Naval Officer. But, as mojo mentioned, there are no second chances when you are in command of a nuclear powered or armed submarine.

You can also feel free to line the caravan route. In our last such national caravan we had people waving American flags from their properties, others who posted signs supporting our troops along the highways and roads we took. Let’s show the world we love and support our troops and we won’t back down in our efforts to give them the support on the home front to achieve VICTORY in the war on terrorism.

India-Pakistan
Karachi tries to revive cultural heritage ravaged by extremism
Karachi is alone among its mega-city peers to have no significant public artworks, victim of decades of religious fanaticism likened to the Taliban destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, but artists here are beginning to turn the tide. “What the Taliban did to the ancient Buddha’s statue in Bamiyan a few years ago, fanatics and ruthless government functionaries did to Karachi’s statues long ago,” says Shahid Rassam, lamenting the dearth of public artworks here.

Rassam is one of a handful of local artists working to revive Karachi’s public art, which flourished under the British Raj in India but crumbled under Zia, as culture became an early casualty of a regime that nurtured religious fanaticism. The rot had set in under Zia’s predecessor, Ayub Khan, the first in a long line of military rulers, who held power from 1958-1969.

“The religious extremists launched the first campaign against beautiful statues in Karachi during Ayub Khan’s rule when the city was stripped of most of its street artifacts,” says former city official Saifur Rehman Grami. Art enthusiast Grami says old Karachi had been dotted with huge statues.

The monuments survived sporadically until Zia seized power in a military coup in 1977 as Pakistan reverted to military rule. His 11-year tenure encouraged sectarian Islam and religious extremism prospered as he imposed curbs on cultural activities.

In the process, he gave extremists the freedom to ruin the remnants of Karachi’s glorious statuary, says Rassam.

“General Ziaul Haq’s period remains a nightmare for art and culture during which Karachi suffered the most, because this city was the cultural hub of Pakistan,” Rassam says. “Even many years after the creation of Pakistan most of these statues were erected at various gardens and public places but since the late 1970s the wave of extremism uprooted all these monuments,” Grami says. Scores of sculptures depicting British rule are now little more than a folk memory after being uprooted and destroyed.

SC denies bail to PPP MNA Bajrani in vani case
A Supreme Court bench on Monday rejected Pakistan People’s Party MNA Mir Hazar Khan Bajrani’s plea for “protective bail” in a vani case in which he, heading a jirga, ordered the handover of five girls to some families to resolve a murder dispute. However, the police of Kashmor, from where the case was reported, did not arrest the MNA despite being present at the court. The Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench had already denied Bajrani protective bail.

Latif Khosa, counsel for Bajrani, pleaded before the seven-member bench headed by Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry that his client be granted “protective bail” to file a bail petition with the Sindh High Court (SHC) as he fears the provincial chief minister, his political rival, could prevent his doing so. The court refused to grant the bail and asked the MNA to approach the SHC for this purpose. The CJ said the court could not grant bail to Bajrani just because he was an influential person.
