I'm probably wrong (actual gun nuts will correct me), but I've been told that a round which explode outside of a chamber (say if overheated, or through chemicla decomposition for really old rounds) doens't project the bullet as it normally would. Danger comes from the relatively small explosion and fragments, but there's no actual risk of receiving a bullet.

Geez. A .22 short. A bullet so puny that it's hard to tell if the rifle has been fired from lack of report or recoil. Quite accurate, though.
A guy I know used to win bar bets by shooting the "o" out of a Coke bottle with iron sites at 25 feet. Any further and it wouldn't chip the glass.
Ironically, the .22 caliber is a far deadlier round than the .25 caliber, for an odd reason. It has a proclivity to nick internal organs in just the right way as to cause peritinitis. So you don't die from the bullet, you die from the infection.

Isn't this the caliber that the Israeli Intell uses for killing? At very close range very deadly and very quiet. Put a towel over the muzzle and you have a silenced pistol.

IIUC actual hitmen use em because they enter the skull and bounce around, without enough energy to exit, and soft enough so they deform, leaving no traceable marks

Not the bullet, just the cartridge. The bullet will hit somewhere in the furnace wall and become a deformed slug.
I know... as I kid I stole a couple of pistol cartridges from my father's shelf (he was in the army and unwittingly left it there) and when making bonfire outside with buddies I dropped one in the middle of it. Yea, was 9 and experiments-inclined. The cartridge exploded with a loud crack, rocketted about a yard high and then split and the bullet with a part of the cartridge whizzed away into the neighborhood. The next I heard was a broken window. Buddies thought I dropped a blank into the fire. Did not want to correct them. It was also the last time I did something as stupid. I did few stupid things later, but that took the prize.
Of course, if I was instructed by my father about ammo, I would likely take his word for what may happen.

Good Lord, I used to fire .22's a;; the time as a kid. Dropping a few rounds while reloading was commonplace (and you could almost never find them all if you accidentally dropped a whole box while out in the field or the woods plinking targets.

A number of reports in the USA are suggesting that an absentee vote cast in Tuesdays midterm elections was posted using the famous Inverted Jenny stamp. Officials in Broward County, Florida noticed an unusual looking stamp as they were counting absentte votes. County Commissioner John Rodstrom, a former stamp collector, recognised it instantly.
The stamp is now being kept in storage, with voting laws stating that along with the vote itself, it must be archived for two years and then destroyed. Mitch Kopkin, proprietor of the Tropical Stamp shop in Fort Lauderdale declared that whilst it was highly unlikely that the stamp was a genuine Inverted Jenny, it would fetch between $50,00 and $200,000 if it was proved to be the real thing. If the stamp has been canceled, its value will plummet. How many other stamps look like the Inverted Jenny? Somewhere, there's a senile old codger whose family (if he has any), is howling to high heaven.

I got to wrestle with a juvenile leopard a few times years ago. A beautiful, rock hard, powerful animal. As to the wrestling part, I was really just trying to scratch her behing her ears, which she loved, and showed her love by grabbing one by the nape and purring her silly head off, until she wanted more scratching of course. Powerful, beautiful, dangerous.

One thing I've noticed over the years is how the number of accidents and fatalites involving wild animals and humans doing stupid things to/with/around them has increased.
I blame TV. These nature shows focus on the "fluffy bunny" aspect, and do not remind the viewers that wild creatures are not like the family dog or cat.
Domesticated animals (for lack of a better term, I have to anthropomorphize) "understand" the difference between humans and themselves.
Wild animals that have been habituated to humans do not. They tend to see humans as just funny looking members of their own species, and treat humans accordingly. I got a powerful demonstration of this when I got to work with some wolves at the zoo. The nip on the nose and the invite to play was nothing like what my dog would do. Like WM, I found it wonderful.
I cannot stress enough that one needs to remind the general public that you should leave wild animals alone unless you have a powerful reson (loss of life, limb or eyesight) to get involved. otherwise tragedy will ensue.

Much the same thing occures with horses, N guard. If you go out in the pasture you MUST be the Alpha horse. Their playful nips and head-butting can have painful outcomes.

We used a length of rope long enough to cinch around the nose and neck. Far less painful or capable of inflicting lasting damage upon the animal IMO.
You throw a loop around the neck, cinch the rope back throgh the loop and another loop back through that loop. You now have a makeshift halter and the horse (or pony) behaves nicely enough if you have to tighten down the loop around its nose.
Way more control than this thing looks like it gives you too if the big beast decides to get ornery or rowdy.
Zimbabwe's troubled state airline has cancelled flights to London, fearing seizure of its aircraft over unpaid debt. lotp, while I'd like to think that all of us here at Rantburg share a common agenda of wanting to end terrorism, it's become increasingly apparent that you are pursuing a separate one of your own. I feel that you have become dangerously close to an apologist for Islam but that is only my opinion, for what it's worth.
You have admitted to editing your posts, although claiming only minor grammatical corrections. At message boards where no one has the ability to do so, such actions are viewed as highly suspect. Furthermore, in at least one instance, it would seem as though you deliberately ignored a crucial refutation of your own position. In this case it revolved around Taj al-Hilali being widely regarded as a moderate Muslim.
I posted extensive evidence in support of this notion when you questioned it only to have you seemingly ignore what amounted to some extensive investigation. It was only until .com pointedly directed your attention to it that you finally broke down and reviewed it without giving much detail as to how your own point of view had been disproven.
I'm going to request that you carefully review the posts and linked articles in today's listing titled, "Egypt: Islamic Link to Gang Rape and Molestation". While it is certainly your right to do so, being a woman, your continued defense of Islam as a worthy creed is increasingly disturbing in light of how horribly women are treated by Muslims.
I'd be rather curious regarding your own response to my post in the thread and how you reconcile the extensive mistreatment of women, sexual child abuse of both girls and boys, including the very apparent causal link between this psycho-sexual trauma and terrorism. Despite your own support for it, it would seem that Islam has no leg to stand upon and I am intensely curious how you go about maintaining your position.
You have edited out some admittedly less-than-tasteful remarks or references from this thread in what appears to be a discouragement of treating women like sexual objects, yet seem to have no problem defending Islam even though its entire doctrine does nothing but treat women like sexual objects. I view this as serious cognitive dissonance and it appears as though others here might feel the same.

I have not been really active on the Burg for the last five days. This has been due to my construction projects demands, and also for the need to do some introspection on last Tuesday's debacle. I am assembling my assessment and thoughts.
I just went through the sink trap on the redacted comments. Though I do not find them good for mixed company, they are not sink trap material. Rantburg is for ranting. There is going to be a fair bit of snarkiness and some *cough cough* risque references. We are dealing with heavy stuff in the main topics, so people are going to blow off steam. As long as it does not take over the postings, live with it.
The moderator that took this off needs to lighten up, or get out of the moderating business. This is Fred's blog. If he thinks that the snarkiness is getting out of hand, he will advise us, in his usual, witty, elegant, and, need be, highly directive way, as we say in management classes. My two cents worth.

As a guy I'd like to say that those comments were highly inappropriate and disrespectful to women and shouldn't really belong here (ultimately Fred makes the decision). As a courtesy to women reading the 'burg, I'd refrain from posting comments like that. After all, it's what officers and gentlemen would do in the presence of women (at least I hope). But then, I've learned long ago that com is neither.

lotp dear, I think taking a vacation might be a good idea. You've an awful lot on your plate right now, and Rantburg ought not be on your A list, nor even your B list. But if I am forced to choose, I'd rather you do those other things than be so selfish as to insist you come back for me to learn from.
Not long ago there was a discussion here about the behaviour of the Byzantines as they were being besieged or attacked (I don't remember the exact details) by their future Muslim overlords. Various groups kept killing off those they deemed not right thinking, rather than uniting to destroy the enemy of them all, who didn't care how any of them thought so long as they surrendered. That is what I fear I see here.
Re sinktrapped comments, as C states, they may be a bit ungentlemanly, but they don't seem to be extremely horible. That's it. If lotp just responded "I thought we are all mature adults here"--that would drive the point and perhaps cause a mild embarassment (I wouldn't bet on it ;-), but think a smidget of it for sure).
As for lotp... the commenters are onto something.
Some while ago, I stated that Islam has to go...by whatever means necessary. I was summarily accused of being a genocidal maniac (not in those words but in gist of it) by lotp. She did not ask what these means may be, she just assumed that I meant obliteration via nukes or even something worse, whatever that may be (that someone I don't remember... some kind of smurf... joined in and piled on the genocidal maniac label is beside point). It, frankly, surprised me that lotp did not ask what those means may be and went for the jugular.
I probably missed a bunch of threads, as I see now, because posters here seem to to have noticed a pattern that may shed a light on lotp outburst in my case.

Perhaps you're right, TW, lotp may be overworked and strains her job may influence some responses. I kinda understand, because I find myself in kinda same predicament. I believe I am onto something that may potentially win the war, but haven't yet decided to pursue the idea to make prototypes as it may prove to be a Pandora's box. I don't say this to make myself important, just to illustrate dilemas some of us may face in this strange war.
But the thing is, I was a moderator in several lists and forums and know the territory. It is not a job for everyone and if the moderator tends to be jumpy, it causes more harm than good. 'S just the nature of things and it seems that lotp is not particularly suited for it. Not everyone is.

Where in the hell have I ever said such a thing? I said she was acting as "an apologist". There is a huge difference and I'm sure you're well aware of it. Islam, in almost every single one of its manifestations, is intensely abusive to women. For a woman to defend it is unseemly at best and I'll maintain that to my dying day.
That lotp is involved in the fight against Islamofascism and, at the same time, willing to defend Islam (the difference between these two is becoming evermore indistinguishable), strikes me as cognitively dissonant, and I have said so.
I've already seen lotp cherry pick her replies and I find that especially repugnant. Especially, when she took the advice of others to read what I had posted but pointedly made no effort to address me regarding how it disproved her position. I find that to be intellectually dishonest. I am also confident that she has censored my posts when they were far less offensive than those I was confronted with. So, yes, I do sense some sort of agenda.

Not so with Muslims, Islam and Islamofascism. I lump them together because they have lumped themselves together. Read the linked article in my first post. Islam will not cease to be a threat until it abandons its institutionalized abuse of women. This abuse may well be the root of terrorism itself and for that reason, I regard any attempt to excuse Islam's abuse of women as de facto toleration of terrorism. This is something I have concluded only in the last few weeks and the concept is going through final testing, but I see nothing to disprove such a notion and everything to support it.

It is a rather simple equation: Islam=death.
Islam is a death cult. Islam encourages the faithful to die to go to 'heaven' (which actually sounds like any decent place outside the mooslim world. heh) where life seems very un-islamic. If one follow the big Mo's orders, you will get wine and women in the hereafter. Heh. Compared to life for the average arab/mooslim, this sounds pretty damn good. So, a trip to the beach is hot for the average joe jihad.
I grew up in Soddiland (58-70) and never really had any problems with arabs. I had no real problems with arabs until 1983, Beirut. Then I started to watch closely and learn more. Then 9/11 happened, mass murderers were doing this for God and I said the myself "WTF is that"?
So I started to learn about Islam's teachings and history (I even ordered a free and REALLY nice Koran from CAIR. Heh).
I was completely shocked by the mooslim belief systems and actions over the years. Absolutely heinous acts and in the name of God. What a load of crap islam is.
That is one of the reasons I come to RB. Good information and like-minded folks.

I've watched as the folks here have acted more and more like democrats as Nov. 7 came closer. I predicted a Trunk bloodbath 6 months ago and got dumped on for it. I wasn't smarter, just more frustrated. Disagreement through superior invective. Works a lot better to disagree and argue with ideas than to namecall and to consign to the outer darkness. Pretty unpleasant and unrefined for no good reason.
That said, too bad that we have been infected with PC to point where words are now more than words.

Notice how just about any part of the constitution can be suspended in a time of war? There's a valid reason for that. I dearly love the constitution, I feel it is one of the most well-thought out documents ever assembled by the hand of man. The foresight and vision of our founding fathers was nothing less than prescient.
I'll also add that our constitutional rights do not apply to our enemies as neither do the Geneva Conventions. C, you can feel free to elaborate here, or some other time, about what aspects of the constitution you foresee being violated in our fight against terrorism. I happen to believe that America is worth saving at all costs and that we had better be prepared for a long, dirty war with a rapacious foe who will stop at nothing to kill every last one of us.
You'd probably find that a huge number of people here would agree with the "values" you're referring to. Personally, I liked the plea you made for more civil conduct here. I've been more than a little disappointed at how people have reduced themselve to making personal and offensive attacks in the midst of what should be factual debate.
I'll freely admit that my own language has been subject to quite a bit less self-censorship in the last few months. This is a direct reflection of my frustration with how little change there has been with respect to Islam's need for reformation. I'll cheerfully note that I pretty much refuse to allow my language to descend into sexist tripe, because I believe that no one here needs to hear it.
I also have strong confidence in Fred and the majority of moderators that they will not let this place devolve into a putrid hate site. Every indication is that these good people scrupulously avoid giving bigotry and discrimination a free ride at this place. For that, they have my genuine respect. I do not hang out at other boards specifically because of this.

I think today was a step towards eliminating some of that PC mentality. "Civil, well-reasoned discourse" is alive and well at Rantburg and "words" still have meaning to those of us who are willing to use them in rational debate.
Don't sell Rantburg short, SR-71. A lot of fine work has gone into making this one of the most free-thinking and un-PC locations on the entire web. This was a much needed process of sorting things out that has been building for quite a few months now. I see no reason for it to signify any decline in or loss of quality. I strongly doubt Fred and the moderators would put up with that.

As I guy, I wouldn't want to see an overabundance in the way of naked guy pix and the like, so I can see lotp's motivation that she doesn't want things to get out of hand, but I think she overreacted. Perhaps Fred can give her an "ADMONISH" button or something instead of a howitzer.

I put this one under the category "female misunderstanding of male humor". Ladies, I know several women who have asked to be treated like one of the guys. So we give it a shot and it always fails. Always. And it is always because she feels insulted by something that was never intended to be an insult. There is something about male humor that you will only understand if you are a male. For the most part it is not meant as an insult in any way. If it is, you'll know it. Guys are very visual. They are usually messing around with the other guy's visualizations, and it's funny. If it gets away from being a visual thing, then it might be an insult! :-)

French intelligence chiefs yesterday faced embarrassment after it emerged that £18m from a secret emergency war chest had gone missing and that some of it may have been spent on what one spymaster called dancing girls, writes Matthew Campbell.
Judges investigating a separate affair learnt of the missing funds from a note written by General Philippe Rondot, a former intelligence chief, to Michèle Alliot-Marie, the defence minister, in 2002.
It mentions a "serious breakdown in the management of special funds allotted to the service". The money was part of a fund established secretly after the second world war. It was maintained during the cold war to finance a French state in exile if the country were ever invaded by the Soviets.
According to Le Parisien newspaper, the money was controlled by a handful of agents. No records were kept and details of bank accounts around the world were passed to successors only by word of mouth.
The money was supposed to be available "in case of crises or major operations to be undertaken urgently", Rondot wrote, "and not to entertain the dancing girls of a few out-of-control contacts of the DGSE" (the French overseas intelligence service).
Rondot's notes were seized by judges investigating the Clearstream affair, which came to light when an anonymous letter gave details of supposed payments made through a clearing house to French officials including Nicolas Sarkozy, the interior minister and likely centre right presidential candidate in next years elections.
The details turned out to have been fabricated, however, and the judges, who questioned Alliot-Marie on Friday, were trying to determine if Dominique de Villepin, the prime minister, tried to use the affair to discredit Sarkozy, his chief political rival.

The Intrepid was bound for a dry dock in Bayonne, N.J., and the first stage of a two-year overhaul, when a team of tugboats failed to pull it more than 15 feet from its berth Monday. Threaten it with Camden, Bayonne will start looking better.
Since then, White and his staff have huddled with officials of the Navy and the Army Corps of Engineers to draw up a foolproof plan to move the ship to Bayonne. After surveying the situation, the Navy determined that the Intrepid is in a "precarious" position, with its stern end sitting on a mound of mud about 2 feet higher than its bow, federal officials said Saturday. The secretary of the Navy responded by agreeing to send a salvage team to New York to help prepare the ship for towing, the Navy Sea Systems Command in Washington said.

..I am told by an acquaintance who has knowledge of such things, that Intrepid's hull is NOT in good shape at all, and may be seriously distorted - that's why she still wouldn't move even after they were sure the dredges had cleared enough mud. Bringing the USN in may have been the only possible option at this point, and they still don't know what they'll find when they get her to Bayonne.

I, for one, who has been to the Coast of Mississippi numerous times for work (both before and after Katrina) applaud the good people of Mississippi, of ALL races. THEY are what this country's all about. Got hit by the mother of all hurricanes, pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and got on with life. Compare that to the Democratic People's Republic of New Orleans and how they reacted to Katrina, and that one story sums up the Donks vs. the Repubs. in this country.
