-Short Attention Span Theater-
Wake Island Evacuated Ahead of Typhoon Ioke
Now, this is what I call a storm!
HONOLULU – The military evacuated 200 people from Wake Island on Monday before the arrival of Typhoon Ioke, the strongest Central Pacific hurricane in more than decade. Classified as a Category 5 "super typhoon," Ioke is expected to extensively damage the U.S. territory when it hits Wednesday with 155-mph winds, said Jeff Powell, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

"This is going to roll up a storm surge that will probably submerge the island and destroy everything that's not made of concrete," Powell said.
Wonder if the island will be left standing? It isn't that tall.
The evacuees, mostly American and Thai contractors, were flown to Hickam Air Force Base on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, said Maj. Clare Reed, a spokeswoman for the 15th Airlift Wing. The contractors work at a civilian base, Reed said. No other permanent residents live on the tiny island, she said.

Ioke had winds of 160 mph and gusts up to 185 mph on Monday, Powell said. The storm was 560 miles southeast of Wake Island and on track for a direct hit, according to the forecast.
Seas are reported to be reaching 50 feet in the storm.
Wake Island is 2,300 miles west of Honolulu and 1,510 miles east of Guam. The storm is expected to strike at 5 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday, or noon Thursday on the island.

#8  Forgot the name but there was a Pacific storm/cyclone in the mid-1990's that was officially labeled "the Storm/Typhoon of the Century" by the national weather boyz - iff memory is correct, in terms of size and TV imaging it appeared to take up 2/3's or more of the entire PACOA. Fortunately for Guam + WESTPAC, in terms of storm power it surged then died - its size was more scary than its magnitude of power/energy.

Dozen Pot Plants Found: Growing at Duluth Police Station
HT to Drudge - way to be awake, coppers
IRONY: Police attribute a dozen marijuana plants at the West Duluth substation to a joker.

Like all good reporters, the News Tribune's Janna Goerdt has learned to keep her ears and eyes open for whatever might be encountered on an assignment. Goerdt accompanied law enforcement officials Saturday as they searched for people illegally using all-terrain vehicles in Duluth. She wrote a story about the enforcement campaign for Sunday's newspaper. Goerdt also uncovered a dozen marijuana plants growing in western Duluth.

The pot wasn't growing off an ATV trail. And she didn't find it in the woods. Goerdt found the marijuana growing in a planter near the front door of the West Duluth police substation. You might say she was paying attention.
unlike the rest of the PD
During law enforcement's briefing on how they were going to conduct the ATV sting Saturday, Goerdt heard two members of a rival news team talking about "something interesting" in front of the police station at 5315 Grand Ave.
so, someone else actually found it first...
Eavesdropping like a good reporter, Goerdt filed the comment away in her memory bank and accompanied law enforcement on the ATV crackdown. When that assignment was over, Goerdt returned to the police station and took a walk around the building. She found the marijuana plants. Although she said she didn't know that they were marijuana plants.

She plucked one of the leaves and brought it back to the newspaper. "I needed some evidence," she said. "I didn't know if anyone would believe me. I didn't think it was a big deal. I just thought it was rather amusing."

Duluth City Gardner Tom Kasper was given the leaf for inspection Monday and confirmed that it came from a marijuana plant. Kasper immediately traveled to the West Duluth police substation to inform neighborhood supervising police Lt. John Beyer of the pot growing in the front-yard planter. Beyer pointed out that he, his police officers and the public use the backdoor entrance to the police station. The front door just off busy Grand Avenue is usually locked and not used.
the front door is usually locked?
"The only thing I can say is somebody has a sense of humor," Beyer said. "Now they'll read about it in the paper and say, 'Yeah, that was me.' "

Goerdt provided the scoop and Kasper did the scooping. The gardener dug out the 12 marijuana plants by their roots and presented them to Beyer. They were 4 to 6 inches high and Kasper estimated they had been growing about three weeks. Beyer said the plants will be placed in a paper bag and destroyed when the next batch of police-confiscated drugs are gotten rid of.

Kasper said this is the first marijuana found growing in Duluth that has been reported to him in 10 years. But this isn't the first time marijuana has been discovered growing in a public place in Duluth. In 1990, a citizen pointed out to police that a 3-foot marijuana plant was growing in the northern corner of the Civic Center courtyard near City Hall.

For a day at least, Goerdt is known around here as "Janna The Snitch." She said she can live with it.

Woman crashes teaching dog to drive
A woman in Hohhot, the capital of north China's Inner Mongolia region, crashed her car while giving her dog a driving lesson, the official Xinhua News Agency said Monday. No injuries were reported although both vehicles were slightly damaged, it said.

The woman, identified only be her surname, Li, said her dog "was fond of crouching on the steering wheel and often watched her drive," according to Xinhua. "She thought she would let the dog 'have a try' while she operated the accelerator and brake," the report said. "They did not make it far before crashing into an oncoming car." Xinhua did not say what kind of dog or vehicles were involved but Li paid for repairs.

Fifth Column
Moonbat SLC Mayor Deluged With Phone Calls
Offended by Rocky Anderson's plans to protest President Bush this week, the Utah Republican Party is waging a public-relations campaign urging Utahns to call the mayor and tell him to "stop embarrassing" the state.

And while Utahns have listened - flooding City Hall with almost 300 calls and overwhelming the phone system - Anderson hasn't.

Salt Lake City's mayor isn't altering his protest plans. "Given the nastiness of some of these people, it actually just bolsters my resolve," said Anderson, who previously alleged that the "real embarrassment" is Utahns' unwavering support of Bush.

The GOP acknowledged that its push, sending out thousands of voice-mail messages to Republicans and running ads on about 20 radio stations around the state, wouldn't change Anderson's mind.

"This is all about letting the rest of Utah have a voice to counter his voice," said Utah Republican Party Executive Director Jeff Hartley. "We want to make sure the rest of Utah at least lets him know they disagree with his behavior. It may not change his behavior, but he will at least know he doesn't get a free pass when he embarrasses the state."

Hartley said party headquarters and Republican elected officials have received "dozens" of calls from people upset Anderson is speaking at the protest and invited Cindy Sheehan to join him. Since Sheehan's son died in Iraq in 2004, she has become a national face of the anti-war movement.

Ads started running Monday with heavy play in Utah's rural counties, where residents are "hopping mad this man is representing our state to the world," Hartley said.

City Hall was inundated with calls Monday and hired three temporary workers to handle them.

The city won't ask the Republican Party to pick up the $144 tab for the temps and the $1,000 extra cost to the phone system.

"It's part of the democratic process," Anderson said. "It's part of being responsive."

And the GOP won't offer to pay. Hartley was glad to hear about the volume of calls to tell the mayor "he's gone too far off the reservation of sanity."

"He's using the people of Utah and using his position as mayor to draw national attention to himself. It's clear he wants to be a national figure. It's clear he's using his office to get there."

Anderson announced last month he wouldn't seek a third term as mayor. He said the protest has "nothing" to do with his future plans. "These people are so deluded. They make this stuff up as they go along."

The GOP radio ad intones that the threat to the United States by terrorists is real, "and the choice is clear. Do we do whatever it takes to win the war on terror? Or do we embolden the terrorists with a cut-and-run strategy? Mayor Rocky Anderson has made his decision. He's invited professional protester Cindy Sheehan to Utah to convince you that America should retreat."

The message seems to bolster a poll commissioned by The Salt Lake Tribune that shows 45 percent of Utahns believe anti-war demonstrators such as Anderson and Sheehan "aid the enemies of the U.S." Some 27 percent say they "play an important role in the national debate over U.S. policy in Iraq." Another 28 percent weren't sure. The poll of 625 registered voters was conducted by the Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research firm this month.

"Part of what undermines our strength is our enemies thinking we have weakness within our ranks," Hartley said. "If they can pressure us to cut and run and give up the fight . . . if politicians like Rocky Anderson prevail, then we'll give up and quit."

The ad also questions if Anderson shares Sheehan's "anti-American" views, alleging she called terrorists "freedom fighters" and America the "largest terrorist organization in the world."

A LexisNexis search of major newspapers found references to such comments only in letters to the editor or editorial columns, save a paraphrase from a London paper. However, Sheehan has been quoted in The Seattle Times describing Bush as a "bigger terrorist than Osama bin Laden."

Anderson said he believes troops should leave the "tragic, unjustified war . . . as soon as possible."

As for the idea that he is abetting terrorists, he added "that characterization is despicable. I do what I do out of love for this nation and the values on which this nation was founded."
There are about a half-dozen groups planning anti-Bush/anti-war/anti-US/anti-Israel and Jew protests, where many plan to scream "death to Jews" and "death to America". However, some wit has obtain a permit to counter-protest in a "death to Arabs" rally, and CAIR is positively apoplectic about anti-Arab "hate speech".

#3  It goes back to the only poll that counts is on election day. The mayor has already conceded the battlefield he currently holds, by not running again. It remains to be seen whether this stunt will pursuade his future constituents to elect him to represent them. I know the state of Utah is pretty conservative, but what about Salt Lake City and environs?

#4  TW, Although I now live in Texas (not from here, but got here as fast as I could), I was born and raised in the SLC area. I can only speak to how it was back in the 60's and 70's. I've been back several times as an adult, but not long enough to really get a feel for how the politics are now. Back then it was indeed conservative, and staunchly mormon.

My Dad still lives there, and he tells me it began to change in the mid to late 80's. The biggest change, according to him, was the massive influx of Californians, lured by the low cost of living, low taxes, clean air, mountains, cheap real estate and a tech sector that was taking off. Also, the coming of the Olympics brought in people from all over the political spectrum, many of which stayed there.

I'd still say the area is generally conservative, but the moonbats do have a few footholds. I'm sure there are alot of other factors that have caused the shift, but I don't spend enough time there to have an educated opinion as to why.

Posted by: mcsegeek1 || 08/29/2006 11:52 Comments || Top||

#5  SLC is like Austin; it sees itself as an island of liberalism in a sea of benighted reaction and feels that it must constantly show its difference or be lumped in with the rest of the "reddest of red states." Most Mormons I know can't stand Anderson and wouldn't have elected him to anything. However, SLC, which is actually a fairly small part of the Salt Lake basin, doesn't have many Mormons living there now; the moonbats have taken over. If Anderson is stupid enough to try running for statewide office, he'll get his head handed to him.

Shays' Shift Causes A Stir
By suggesting that a timeline for withdrawing U.S. troops might force Iraqis to more quickly establish their own security, Rep. Chris Shays, R-4th District, vigorously stirred the pot in Connecticut and Washington. Ned Lamont's Senate campaign Friday seized on the statement by Shays, a supporter of the war in Iraq, as a dramatic shift that places Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman in a dwindling minority opposed to considering deadlines.

CNN, MSNBC and other news networks gave prominent play Friday to the ramifications of Shays' new position, which he first announced Thursday on a conference call during a London stopover on the way home from his 14th trip to Iraq. "It is a pretty dramatic shift in course," said George Jepsen, the chairman of Lamont's campaign to unseat Lieberman. "[Shays] is buying into the rationale that the Iraqi army, political leadership and security folks won't step up to the plate."

Shays' new position further isolates Lieberman politically in Washington and Connecticut and undercuts Lieberman's claim that Lamont is reckless for suggesting that Iraqis need to prepare for a reduced U.S. presence, Jepsen said.

#2  I can't really understand that you "Have to have an exit strategy" when you begin hostilities. I have always thought that the ONLY exit strategy is victory. If we decided to bring our troops home and let Iraq to it's own demise we would have a MUCH bigger problem to deal with in a few years. I can pretty much state that Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the Kurds DO NOT want us to leave anytime soon. Only Iran, Al Queda, Syria, and the Democrats seem to preach an early departure for our troops.

#3  “I have always thought that the ONLY exit strategy is victory.”

Sarge, I think most would agree with that statement. However, it’s somewhat of a “chicken and egg” argument. The definition of “exit strategy” to the battle-planner is an essential component to achieve victory. To the political boneheads it is simply a cliché to bandy about in an attempt to hide their ignorance.

#4  Depot Guy, if having an “Exit Strategy” is a measurement of the success of a conflict then WWII was a dismal failure. We still have large numbers of troops stationed overseas in Asia and Europe. No an “exit strategy” is either victory (the other guy gives up, ie Germany/Japan) or defeat (when you give up, ie Vietnam). For some reason I get the idea that most Democrats and some RINOS believe that the world would be a better place if the U.S. was defeated in Iraq. I am a simple person and I can’t understand how letting Iran, Al Queda or both take control of Iraq would be a good thing. But then I don’t have the keen intellect or military finesse of Kerry, Pelosi, Kennedy, Durbin and now Shays.

#5  Sarge, I think our disagreement is in semantics not conclusions. The Army War College’s evaluation criteria for an exit strategy encompass 3 areas; Military; Political and Threat. Their "battlefield framework" is based on both Mission and Intent. The politicians you listed narrowly define their definition so that it is tailored to their agenda.

Quote from the Council on Foreign Relations:

“If you ask most politicians what an exit strategy is, they will look at you blankly, because they consider the answer obvious: a plan to bring American troops home from some mission abroad. The simplicity of this definition reveals the concept's political, as opposed to intellectual, origins: it is a response to perceived popular impatience with messy foreign entanglements.” Link

Science & Technology
Developing rapid prototyping center for space
When astronauts need to fix broken parts in orbit using specialized tools, the replacement parts and necessary equipment traditionally must be delivered to them from Earth, delaying science and adding to the cost of the mission. Chicago native and engineer Curtis Manning and the Rapid Prototyping research team at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., are developing ways for astronauts to simply push a button - and quickly create the required part or tool right on the spot.

Manning works in the Marshall Center's Rapid Prototyping Laboratory. The lab consists of seven state-of-the-art machines, each of which can build - without benefit of any kind of mold - intricate, detailed pieces of hardware using metallic dust, liquid resin and even a special kind of plastic that looks like fishing line.

"Instead of starting at a drawing board, we start with a computer- aided design, or CAD drawing," Manning said. "We program our computers and machines with that CAD drawing, and the machine builds solid, three-dimensional objects with incredible detail, even hollow piping or a threaded hole for bolts."

The machines can build small models, full-sized machine parts or ready-to-work tools. The technology permits engineers and designers to see their concepts realized in three dimensions. They can even perform basic testing on the prototype before committing to traditional construction or fabrication of parts.

Once the process is perfected, Manning believes it's just a matter of time to make rapid prototyping cost-effective enough to perform in space. "We're relatively inexpensive," he said. "In the future, we could devise a process that would use raw materials in space to create whatever an astronaut might need."

That way, instead of waiting for a misplaced or worn-out part or tool to be delivered from Earth, or returning a satellite to the ground for repair, an astronaut may simply upload CAD drawings or programs, feed them into a rapid prototyping process, load the raw material and quickly build the part or tool to finish the job.

#2  We are approaching the end of the era of mass-production. The era of mass-personalisation is upon us.

#6  Rapid prototyping or Stereo Lithography as it is also known has been around for a while now. It has its difinite uses but I seriously doubt it will ever replace mass production completely. One reason is the economy of scale. If you need one or ten of something then it is an extremely adaptable tool. But if you need thousands then IMO opinion it does not make much sense. But I would love to have one in the workshop to play around with

#7  What if you have thousands of stereo lithography lathes? You can makes thousands of personalised items.

Each soldier has a gun sized exactly for him.

Your car has an engine with the fuel/economy balance that you choose.

#8  With nano-tech assemblers things would be much more interesting..... (pie in the sky for a few more years)

#9  "Your car has an engine with the fuel/economy balance that you choose."

You don't have to change the engine. With computer engine controls, just change the software. Some Prius owners have ALREADY hacked the software for performance.

#10  So lets get this straight. We can send up bulk materials (cheaper to insure and less worry about cost if a flight is lost) and build the complicated and expensive satellites and space station parts in orbit?

Sounds like a winner if they can get it to work.

#11  Slightly OT...
This is all very cool stuff, and kind of puts things into perspective; one group of people are sending other people into space and increasing the store of human knowledge, and one group of people want to stop the accumulation of knowledge and kill everyone who won't bow down to them. Hmmm.

I've been following nano-stuff for quite some time, since Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation (1986) (I think I bought my copy in '91-92) and have also dug into his more mathematically minded 'Nanosystems' to see if the physics stacked up ok (I was mostly interested in thermal noise - seems like it shouldn't be a problem, the quantum effects were never going to be a problem). The idea of sugar grain sized computers really appealed to me! geek...

There seemed to be a dearth of advances for most of the 90's, but recently things have really taken off - no general self-replicating assemblers that's for sure (and that's probably a very good thing), but some really amazing advances; chemical reactors on a chip, nanowires and all manner of sensors.

I really hope that when the first assembler is built, which I think will happen in 10-15 years, it's built by the good guys, because when that happens, well Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore...

#12  I agree. Not Kansas. Its a new world.
Posted by: 3dc || 08/29/2006 21:08 Comments || Top||

#13  The benefit for space is that the astronauts don't have to wait for a resupply mission to get a part. The process will not replace mass production, which optimizes costs. Rapid prototyping builds up a part layer by layer, so is slow and the powdered/liquid starting materials are not the most durable.
