Interesting Times - Dems Polled Prefer Gov. Cuomo
[NY Post] A majority of Democrats want to nominate New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for president instead of Joe Biden, according to poll results shared exclusively with The Post.

The national poll found 56 percent of Democrats prefer Cuomo, with 44 percent wanting to stick with presumptive nominee Biden ‐ a 12-point margin well outside the 4.8 percent margin of error for the Democratic sample.
Maybe the Dem debates started too soon.

#4  I was reading about Veronica Lake at wiki. Lake was born Constance Frances Marie Ockelman. She was married and divorced 3 times. She had 4 children, one a boy who died shortly after birth after Lake fell over a lighting cable at the studio during her pregnancy. She acquired a taste for alcohol; apparently with some zeal as she later died from cirrhosis of the liver, acute hepatitis and acute kidney injury as a result at age 50. During her life, she had things together enough to get a pilot's license.

NY could've reduced coronavirus deaths by 80% if it acted sooner, ex-CDC director says
[NewYorkUpstate] The former director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says New York could have reduced the number of deaths from coronavirus by up to 80% if it acted sooner.

Tom Frieden, who also previously served as commissioner of the New York City Health Department, tells The New York Times that the Empire State should have closed schools and non-essential businesses two weeks earlier than it did and begun social distancing at the beginning of March.

Coronavirus traces in Massachusetts sewage hint at much higher levels of infection than official numbers
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Research carried out by biotech startup Biobot Analytics found more traces of the pathogen than expected in the waste water, considering the number of confirmed cases in the area.

The findings suggested there could be as many as 2,300 people infected with the virus in the region. At the time the study was taken in mid to late March, there were 446 confirmed cases in the area, according to the researchers.

A team of scientists from startup Biobot Analytics, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT,) Harvard University, and Brigham and Women's Hospital tested water at an urban treatment facility over the course of seven days from March 18-

They found higher quantities of the virus than predicted. Eric Alm, one of the authors of the study, told Newsweek: 'At Biobot, we have been using wastewater based epidemiology to generate data on the opioid crisis in the US...

'Even if those viral particles are no longer active or capable of infecting humans, they may still carry genetic material that can be detected using an approach called PCR (polymerase chain reaction,) which amplifies the genetic signal many orders of magnitude creating billions of copies of the genome for each starting virus.'

The state of Massachusetts has 18,941 confirmed cases of the highly contagious disease, as of Thursday.

The death toll stands at 503, the state Department of Public Health announced.

Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 04/10/2020 12:45 Comments || Top||

#8  Of course. But if only 6% of infected people are actually detected, this has consequences for the death rate.

Also, if you do a comparison by country: The methods differ and only per capita rates should be used for comparison.

Sweden still has a lower per capita rate of infections than Norway and Denmark (strict lockdown), but a much higher death rate.

OTOH Sweden has tested far less people per capita than Norway and Denmark, so the rate of infections is probably much higher.

If so, Sweden doesn't look that good any more with its relatively relaxed approach.

#10  ...tested water at an urban treatment facility over the course of seven days from March 18-

One fucking plant? Which plant are they talking about? There are at least 1,000 certified wastewater treatment plants in Mass, and I'm trying to identify the major ones, of which there seem to be at least 20 throughout the state. If I had to bet they're sampling from Nut Island in Boston and if that's the case, they're talking about the immediate region of Boston. This would skew, in my opinion, the results of the test (either by accident or design) by leaving the rest of the state out.

Huge grain of salt on this one.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Attorney General Barr: Durham's Focused On Indictments, Not A Report
[Hot Air] Yesterday, we wondered whether Laura Ingraham’s teaser from her interview with Attorney General William Barr might have left out some context. It actually might have undersold Barr’s comments on Operation Crossfire Hurricane and US Attorney John Durham’s probe into the FBI and intelligence agencies. The Fox News host asked Barr when we could expect to see Durham’s report, and Barr replied that he’s not sure there will be a report.

So what will Durham produce? Indictments, apparently:
Barr wouldn’t tell Ingraham how far Durham had advanced in the investigation, but said it was a "sprawling case" that "takes some time" to fully investigate.

"I think a report may be and probably will be a byproduct of his activity but his primary focus isn’t to prepare a report. He is looking to bring to justice people who were engaged in abuses if he can show that they were criminal violations and that’s what the focus is on," Barr told Ingraham. ...

Barr argued that the FBI investigation into Trump’s presidential campaign was riddled with abuse of power and had no evidence to back it up. He did not mention the intelligence that prompted the investigation, including a Trump campaign adviser boasting that he knew Russia had damaging information on then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"I think the president has every right to be frustrated because I think what happened to him was one of the greatest travesties in American history," Barr said. "Without any basis, they started this investigation of his campaign and even more concerning actually is what happened after the campaign, a whole pattern of events while he was president."
Politico comments that Trump supporters hoped for a report to use in the election, but indictments wouldn’t be a terribly disappointing substitute, I’d guess. They form a narrative as well ‐ as Robert Mueller himself employed in that farcical indictment of Concord Management that blew up in his face when they demanded discovery access. The Department of Justice had to withdraw the indictment last month in order to avoid allowing the Russian-controlled firm access to the intel on which the indictment was based.

That outcome must have alerted John Durham to the dangers of PR-focused indictments. It’s safer just to issue reports, another lesson also learned by Mueller and his special-counsel team. If Durham is focusing on criminal violations and "bring[ing] to justice" those who committed them, that hints that Durham thinks he’s got enough to go all the way to trial ‐ assuming we see any indictments. It’s tough to imagine Barr selling this on national television at this late stage of the probe, though, without knowing what Durham plans and what he has up his sleeve.

#2  Barr is a a smart guy. Lesser players embedded in the agencies have careers to protect and aren’t betting on Presidential cover next cycle. Late July just before August recess is an excellent time to drop some paper on high profile subjects.

Vote by Mail because - Coronavirus
[Dallas News] For the July primary runoffs, and perhaps the November general election, ballots that are mailed instead of cast in-person could largely determine winners and losers ‐ and change the way political campaigns are conducted in the coronavirus era.
Define "era".
The fight against the coronavirus has delayed the runoffs, originally scheduled for May 26, until July 14. But it’s unclear if Texas will have turned the corner in the battle by then. Residents could still be wary of going to polling places for fear of coming in contact with infected people.
Especially if such a fear suits your narrative.
Seniors have an easy solution. Texas law allows anyone older than 65 to vote by mail. Political analysts expect that group to be as important as ever, as many older residents are already accustomed to mailing their ballots. As of now, seniors, the sick and people with disabilities are the only non-absentee residents who can vote by mail.
So seniors will have an unfair advantage in the upcoming elections unless everybody gets mail in voting. Q.E.D.
Republican consultant Bill Miller said the coronavirus will have a chilling effect on the entire electorate.

"To get people to leave a safe environment to go to a polling place is going to be a hard sell," Miller said. "With voting it's always been ‘Do I want to be bothered?' Now this is an ‘I can get sick and die' situation. Many voters are going to sit this one out."
Even some Republicans can suffer from hysteria, so it must be true.

#1  It's no wonder that there are so many allegations of fudging the numbers of deaths (sad that they are, of course) from COVID-19 (SARS-V2), not just from the financial angle but also to keep the "era", "narrative", and "hysteria" alive.

If this COVID-19 teaches Americans one thing, I hope it is to be a little less of a spendthrift. I wonder how many suddenly unemployed people wish they hadn't bought that 650-inch smart TV or blew their income tax refund or have credit cards max'ed out all that the loan-shark interest rate of a good 18%.
Posted by: Clem || 04/10/2020 8:56 Comments || Top||

#4  Remember the Card Check push under the previous administration? Imagine how (quote) efficient (un-quote) voting would be if everyone was counted as voting exactly the way they were registered because "Democrats only vote Democrat, right?". Of course registering for the political party that opposes the party in power might have, as the say, ...consequences.

It would make things easier for the people stuffing ballot boxes full of fake ballots from dead and imaginary voters.
Posted by: magpie || 04/10/2020 13:52 Comments || Top||

#5  NoF'nWay are we going to have no voter ID and mail in votes. I think the pushback by the left for having social distancing and keeping everything shut down up to election time is an effort to get mail-in-votes and no voter ID implemented. That would enable huge opportunities for cheating and rigging in the 2020 election. Trust nothing the Dems want to do.

[ArmstrongEconomics] ....Senator Dr. Scott Jensen of Minnesota came out to expose how the AMA is encouraging American doctors to overcount coronavirus deaths across the US. He showed a 7-page document coaching him, as a doctor, to fill out death certificates with a COVID-19 diagnosis without a lab test to confirm the patient actually had the virus. Why? Because of the package for this relief, hospitals are paid more to attend this virus. NOBODY is dying of the flu any more ‐ only COVID-19.

The numbers will then be used to justify keeping the money flowing to misrepresent this as an epidemic. This fraud will then come back to justify keeping the economy locked down longer and the AMA is now contributing to the destruction of everyone's livelihood, pension, and this exposes the corruption that always emerges with government programs.

This is when the lawyers need to see the dollar floating in the air. It is time for a class-action lawsuit against the AMA for misrepresenting this virus which is destroying small businesses and drastically increasing unemployment. Come on – we have plenty of lawyers reading this. Now's the time to do something constructive. What the AMA is encouraging is FRAUD and to classify a death to COVID-19 without testing is actionable FRAUD. This is no different from Medicare Fraud which is a crime – For Medicaid and Medicare fraud, federal law establishes (1) a civil statute of limitations of six years (42 U.S.C. § 1320a-7a(c)(1)), and (2) a criminal statute of limitations of five years (18 U.S.C. § 3282)....

Europe
EU: Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic Broke EU Law
[Gatestone] The ruling effectively removes the sovereignty of EU member states to make their own decisions regarding the keeping of public law, order and national security in the case of EU migration policies, if those decisions conflict with EU obligations.

In addition, the ruling of the court goes against evidence that migration flows into Europe do indeed constitute a real security danger that has cost European lives.
Continental Suicide Pact™
How national authorities are supposed to distinguish between actual "war refugees" and terrorists impersonating war refugees is not suggested by the Court, which appears curiously uninterested in dealing with the reality of migration.

The Court's ruling does not only contradict facts and common sense. It sends the distinct signal to foreign regimes, such as that of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that sending migrants to the continent for whatever purpose, even political blackmail, will be successful, because European institutions, such as the EU Court of Justice, will do their utmost to ensure that even the most rebellious EU member states, such as Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, will be forced to receive them.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic broke EU law when they refused to take in migrants under the European Union's September 2015 relocation agreement. During the 2015 migrant crisis, EU leaders agreed to relocate 160,000 migrants and refugees EU-wide, assigning each EU member state a fixed quota from the camps in Italy and Greece, where migrants and refugees were arriving in record numbers. However, the Czech Republic accepted only 12 of the 2,000 refugees assigned it, while Hungary and Poland took in none.

In 2017, the EU took Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) over that refusal to take migrants. On April 2, 2020, the CJEU ruled against the three countries. The ruling followed the October 2019 recommendation by the Court's Advocate General, legal advisor to the Court, which said that EU law must be followed and that the EU's principle of solidarity "necessarily sometimes implies accepting burden-sharing".

In its judgment, the Court dismissed the three countries' argument that they were entitled to refuse the relocation scheme based on concerns for the maintenance of law and order and the safeguarding of internal security. The Court agreed that those concerns constituted legitimate reasons to derogate from obligations of EU law[1]. However, the Court ruled that EU member states refusing to take in migrants under the relocation scheme could only legitimately do so if they proved, "following a case-by-case investigation, on consistent, objective and specific evidence that provides grounds for suspecting that the applicant in question represents an actual or potential danger"....

Book Review - Aldous Hudley's 'A Brave New World' - originally published 1932
[Pages 31-32, a tour of the 'Infant Nurseries and Neo Pavlovian Conditioning Rooms'] "We condition the masses to hate the country", concluded the Director. "But simultaneously we condition them to love all country sports. At the same time, we see to it that all country sports shall entail the use of elaborate apparatus. So that they consume manufactured articles as well as transport. Hence the electric shocks.

"I see," said the student, and was silent, lost in admiration."

There was a silence, then, clearing his throat." Once upon a time," the Director began, "while our Ford was still on earth, there was a little boy called Reuben Rabinovitch. Reuben was the child of Polish-speaking parents." The Director interrupted himself. "You know what Polish is, I suppose?"

"A dead language."

"Like French and German," added another studen efficiously showing off his learning.

"And 'parent'?" questioned the D.H.C.

There was an uneasy silence. Several of the boys blushed. They had not yet learned to draw the significance but often very fine distinction between smut and pure science. One, a last, had the courage to raise a hand.

"Human beings used to be...' he hesitated; blood rushed to his cheeks. "Well they used to be viviparous."

"Quite right." The Director nodded approvingly.

"And when the babies were decanted..."

"'Born.'" came the correction.

Europe
Sweden's Coronavirus Approach Is Starting To Look Like A Mistake
h/t HotAir
The Swedish experiment continues to be one of the most interesting things happening in the world right now. Pretty much every other country in the world, including Sweden’s neighbors Denmark and Norway, have adopted similar types of government-ordered social distancing. But in Sweden, the country is merely asking people to be sensible and hoping that’s enough to slow the spread of the virus.

...In the past few weeks, the country has experienced a bizarre nationalistic wave dubbed "public health nationalism" ("folkhälsonationalism"), which celebrates Sweden as an island of common sense in a sea of panic and resistance to science. According to this narrative promulgated by authorities and media alike, cultural exceptionalism ‐ such as high public trust ‐‐ makes Sweden particularly well-equipped to manage the pandemic. When asked why Sweden’s strategy deviates from other countries’, Sweden’s influential former state epidemiologist Johan Giesecke quipped, "That is because everyone else is doing it wrong." He went on to explain how he could be so confident: "I think we will manage the epidemic without destroying the economy more than necessary. The absolutely most important thing is to protect the elderly from getting infected. I think we succeed quite well in that. It lies in the Swedish national character to do as one is told."

...A head doctor at a major hospital in Sweden says the current approach will "probably end in a historical massacre." He says healthcare workers at his hospital who have tested positive for the virus but are asymptomatic have been advised to continue working. He asked to remain anonymous because "it is frowned upon to speak of the epidemic or to go against the official vision" but said he felt a need to speak out from an "ethical and medical point of view."
To me the most noteworthy thing about Sweden is that, unlike every other industrialized country in the Word, the deaths outnumber the recoveries. Which suggests only two possibilities: Swedish doctors are worth spit, or they been ordered to practice die Selektion on patients.

#6  USA Today reported the following today: Good Friday, coronavirus pandemic, severe storms in the Northeast: 5 things to know Friday.

The fact that about half of the people tested are running around asymptomatic was interesting. Possibly people have the virus and it is resolved with little knowledge they have the virus.

Most of the people, but not all, don't die from the virus. For example, folk singer John Prine, died in Nashville of complications attributed to COVID-19. Come to find out, he had two previous bouts with cancer. One cancer affected his throat and neck while the other was lung cancer. He had to have one lung removed. He smoked a pack of cigarettes/day for 35 years before advised to quick by his doctor.

One problem being reported is that everything people die from is being attributed to CV-19. The probably insures federal money will be directed to these "hot spots."

By Friday, Iceland will have achieved something no other country has: tested 10% of its population for coronavirus, a figure far higher than anywhere else in the world. WIth a population over 364,000, their findings are startling: about half of its citizenry at any given time who have coronavirus but don't know it, will be asymptomatic — a large percentage many experts have suspected, but have had little firm data to corroborate. "That's a bit scary, They could be spreading it and not knowing it," said Kari Stefansson, a scientist involved in the testing who noted that Iceland tested citizens at random by selecting names out of the country's main telephone directory. Coronavirus has swept the globe, infecting more than 1.6 million people and killing at least 95,000..

Massive computer at Oak Ridge National Labs ID's 77 potential COVID-19 treatments
[futurism] Scientists recently tasked the world’s fastest supercomputer with running thousands of simulations to find drug compounds that could fight the coronavirus.

Now, CNN reports, the IBM supercomputer ‐ called "Summit" and housed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee ‐ has identified 77 treatments that may be able to stop COVID-19 dead in its tracks.

The research, detailed in a paper uploaded to the preprint server ChemRxiv, could help researchers develop a drug to treat the deadly virus ‐ but so far, it’s only an important first step.

"Our results don’t mean that we have found a cure or treatment for the coronavirus," said Jeremy Smith, director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Center for Molecular Biophysics, in a statement.

"We are very hopeful, though, that our computational findings will both inform future studies and provide a framework that experimentalists will use to further investigate these compounds," he added.

The massive supercomputer was tasked with finding compounds that could bind to the "spike protein" or "S-protein" of the virus that it uses to infect host cells. By rendering the protein ineffective, the virus would be inhibited from spreading.

Using previously-created models of the coronavirus spike, the researchers simulated how particles in the viral protein would react to different drug compounds.

The team cut down the list from 77 to the top seven most promising candidates to treat the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Preprint submitted on 08.04.2020, 09:33 and posted on 09.04.2020, 06:15 by Moussa SEHAILIA Smain chemat
The role of hydroxychloroquine to prevent hACE2 from interacting with SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein is unveiled. Artemisinin & derived compounds entangle better than hydroxychloroquine into Lys353 and Lys31 binding hotspots of the virus Spike protein, therefore preventing infection occurs. Since these molecules are effective antivirals with excellent safety track records, their potential repurposing is recommended for clinical trials of COVID-19 patients.
Posted by: crazyhorse || 04/10/2020 8:04 Comments || Top||

#5  Hydroxycloroquine is inexpensive, readily and widely available, India rather than China makes 70% of the world supply, according to Dron66046, and was the first off the blocks to show a positive impact on patients. You go to war fight the pandemic with the tools you have at hand, then upgrade as there is time and money to do so. Which is why FDA and CDC footdragging is so dangerous; they know that a raging pandemic is when early actions make a huge difference, but demanded it only of the populace, not themselves.

Also, models. The scientists now have seven things to test, and then later another seventy. How the suggestions work in the real world will show how well the scientists and programmers currently understand the disease they were trying to model.

#9  Artemisinin is the oldest known anti-flu and malarial preventive. Not a drug really, it's derivatives and compounds are used as supplements in the modern form of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Discovered by the Yellow Emperor, I think. It's called 'sweet wormwood' and can possibly prevent malaria if taken before entering an infected environment. Maybe some derivative can cure too, I don't know.

When they say it's safer, I think they mean it's already taken as supplements in China and is organically derived ?

Israeli COVID-19 treatment shows 100% survival rate - preliminary data
[Jerusalem Post] Six critically ill coronavirus patients in Israel who are considered high-risk for mortality have been treated with Pluristem’s placenta-based cell-therapy product and survived, according to preliminary data provided by the Haifa-based company.

The patients were treated at three different Israeli medical centers for one week under the country’s compassionate use program and were suffering from acute respiratory failure and inflammatory complications associated with COVID-19. Four of the patients also demonstrated failure of other organ systems, including cardiovascular and kidney failure.

Not only have all the patients survived, according to Pluristem, but four of them showed improvement in respiratory parameters and three of them are in the advanced stages of weaning from ventilators. Moreover, two of the patients with preexisting medical conditions are showing clinical recovery in addition to the respiratory improvement.

"We are pleased with this initial outcome of the compassionate use program and committed to harnessing PLX cells for the benefit of patients and healthcare systems," said Pluristem CEO and president Yaky Yanay. "Pluristem is dedicated to using its competitive advantages in large-scale manufacturing to potentially deliver PLX cells to a large number of patients in significant need."

Pluristem’s PLX cells are "allogeneic mesenchymal-like cells that have immunomodulatory properties," meaning they induce the immune system’s natural regulatory T cells and M2 macrophages, the company explained in a previous release. The result could be the reversal of dangerous overactivation of the immune system. This would likely reduce the fatal symptoms of pneumonia and pneumonitis (general inflammation of lung tissue).

Previous preclinical findings regarding PLX cells revealed significant therapeutic effects in animal studies of pulmonary hypertension, lung fibrosis, acute kidney injury and gastrointestinal injury.

Hamas arrests Gaza peace activists after Zoom video call with Israelis
[IsraelTimes] Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbund millipede,-run security forces have arrested several peace activists in the Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip on treason charges after they took part in a web conference with Israeli activists, officials said Thursday.

The Hamas-run Interior Ministry said the activists were accused of "holding a normalization activity with the Israeli occupation."

"Holding any activity or contact with the Israeli occupation under any cover is a crime punishable by law and a betrayal of the people and their sacrifices," it said in a statement.

The activists held a nearly two-hour meeting on Monday over Zoom, an online conferencing service, discussing issues of common interest, including the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic.

The meeting was advertised on a Facebook event page and a recording was posted online by Israeli participants, prompting an outpouring of Paleostinian outrage against the Gaza activists on social media.

The family of Rami Aman, the main organizer and the founder of the Gaza Youth Committee which organized the call, said he answered a summons from the security service early Thursday and that they have not heard from him since.

According to a report in the New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

, during the conference call, Aman joked with participants: "In my opinion, thank you, corona, because corona put the Gaza Strip equal with everyone outside."

Aman, 38, has been arrested in the past for similar activities. In March of last year, he was held for several hours before being released after a conference call in which 10 members of the Gaza Youth Committee spoke to some 200 Israelis.

Following his release on that occasion, he said: "They investigated me about my activities with Israelis and the protests taking place in Gaza... I told them I never said anything wrong. I didn’t give away military information and I’m no spy. I never speak on behalf of others, on behalf of myself only."

"They tried to stress me out and confiscated my phone," he said, "but I denied everything."

A Hamas front man praised Thursday’s arrests.

"The relationship with the Zionist occupation is only a continuing fight until it is forced out of all Paleostinian lands," Hazem Qassem said.

Heritage Coronavirus Commission Releases 5-Step Plan to Reopen America
[PJ] On Thursday, the Heritage Foundation's National Coronavirus Recovery Commission met for the first time. At the meeting, seventeen experts hammered out a general five-phase plan to "save lives and livelihoods" by defeating the coronavirus and jumpstarting the economy. Vice President Mike Pence acknowledged the commission's work.

In order to slow the spread of the virus, President Donald Trump has urged Americans to stay home, practice social distancing, and avoid going into the office if their work is not "essential." State and local leaders have issued various orders, and businesses have moved to remote work or laying off employees. Unemployment has skyrocketed, Americans are having trouble paying rent, and millions are hoping America can reopen sooner rather than later. President Trump originally said he hoped to reopen the country by Easter, but that seems too ambitious.

"Good public health policy is good economic policy, and vice versa," Kay Coles James, president of the Heritage Foundation, said in a statement. "If the economy fails, there will be severe, long-term health consequences; and if the health care system fails, there will be severe, long-term economic consequences. A nation decimated by the disease cannot have a functioning economy, and a catastrophic loss of jobs wreaks horrific damage on both mental and physical health."

C. S. Lewis' Advice To Students During A Pandemic Will Do All Our Souls Good Right Now
[Federalist] In the autumn of 1939, as Nazi Germany invaded Poland and ignited the fuse of World War II, the great British theologian C. S. Lewis preached a sermon called "Learning in War-Time." Although written 81 years ago, his advice is perhaps more relevant today than ever.

Lewis identifies three enemies facing students during crises such as ours and mental exercises to defend against each. His thought are also helpful to those who are not students.

The first enemy is "excitement"‐or, I might say, distraction. The news can overwhelm our thoughts and feelings with excitement or anxiety, paralyzing our studies. It’s hard to focus with so much going on.

Second, pray for your daily bread. Ahmen.

Back in the year of 1918, a bearded, saintly, old man, with foot-scrapers to sell, called on Eric Enstrom at his photography studio in the tiny mining town of Bovey, Minnesota.

From this chance encounter a world-famous photographic study was created. Today Enstrom’s picture Grace, showing the elderly peddler with head bowed in a mealtime prayer of thanksgiving, is known and loved throughout the world.

The Enstrom photo "Grace" has hung in our family homes for generations. Considering it was taken during the Spanish flu. Worthy of consideration.

Thank you B.

'Terrible, Tragic Mistake:' Top General Warns Enemies Not to Test US Military Readiness
[Military.com] "The Pentagon's top leaders said Thursday they can see a "light at the end of the tunnel" of the COVID-19 pandemic and stressed that the U.S. military remains a force in readiness, with fewer than 2,000 cases out of more than two million troops available to support contingency operations.

During an internet broadcast Thursday morning, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley warned adversaries that it would be a "terrible, tragic mistake if they thought that ... [they] can take advantage of any opportunities ... at a time of crisis."

"The U.S. military is very, very capable to conduct whatever operations are necessary to defend the American people," Milley said. "We will adapt ourselves to operating in a COVID-19 environment. We are already doing that."

More than 6 million file for jobless benefits as coronavirus layoffs wrack economy
[The Hill] Roughly 6.6 million Americans filed new applications for unemployment benefits in the first week of April as the coronavirus pandemic devastates the U.S. economy and forces millions out of work, according to data released Thursday by the Labor Department.

The 6,606,000 initial claims for unemployment insurance filed between April 1 and 7 dropped slightly from revised, record-high 6,867,000 new applicants during the previous week, extending an unprecedented surge in layoffs.

More than 10 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits in the final two weeks of March as businesses were forced to shutter to slow the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. As of Thursday morning, there are more than 432,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S., claiming more than 14,000 lives, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.

The shutdowns of restaurants, bars, storefronts and almost all social gathering places around the U.S. has plunged the country into a deep retraction following more than a decade of steady employment and economic growth.

Stocks Just Had Their Best Week in Decades
[Breitbart] The bulls broke loose in financial markets this week and gored the coronavirus.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose a mild 1.2 percent on Thursday, bringing its weekly gain to around 12.7 percent. That makes it one of the best weeks ever for the blue-chip index.

The S&P 500 climbed 1.45 percent for a weekly surge of 12.1 percent. That is the best week for the S&P since 1974. The Nasdaq’s 0.77 percent gain brings the week to 10.6 percent, the best week since 2009.

The Russell 2000 soared 4.62 percent on Thursday for a weekly gain of 18.5 percent.

Oil had a wild ride. Brent crude jumped up to 12 percent higher in the morning, only to fall all the way back to close down 2.71 percent for the day.

American stocks will be closed for Good Friday tomorrow.

Afghanistan
Taliban commander among 6 killed as Afghan forces thwart Taliban attack in Zabul
[KhaamaPress] The Afghan forces thwarted Death Eaters bid to launch an attack on security posts in southern Zabul province and killed six Talibs during the operation.

The Ministry of Defense in a statement said the Talibs were looking to attack the security posts in Kajak Khel Village of Shahjoi district.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
the Afghan forces thwarted the plan by launching an operation and killed six Talibs including one of their commanders Hayatullah.

The statement further added that the security forces also arrested one of the commanders of Taliban
...Arabic for students...
during the operation.

The security forces also confiscated some weapons and munitions during the same operation, the Ministry of Defense added.

The Taliban group has not commented in this regard so far.

Afghan Govt Releases Another 100 Taliban Prisoners, Talibs don’t hold up their end of the deal
[ToloNews] The Afghan National Security Council confirmed on Thursday afternoon that another 100 prisoners had been released. This follows an initial release on Wednesday of the first group of 100 prisoners released by the Afghan government.

Jawid Faisal, the front man for the National Security Council, said: "According to the president's order, 100 Taliban
...Arabic for students...
prisoners were released after they pledged not to return to the battlefield, also considering their health status, age, and the length of their imprisonment, and to fight better against coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
and to make progress in peace talks, they were released."

On Wednesday, Jawid Faisal said these were part of "efforts for peace and containment of COVID-19," he said.

Following weeks of delays, the Afghan government announced the first release of 100 Taliban prisoners presumably as a step to bring the Afghan government and Taliban closer toward intra-Afghan talks.

"The 100 prisoners were on the broader list that the Taliban technical team shared and discussed during meetings with the technical team of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Afghanistan in Kabul," said the statement by the Office of the National Security Council.

This comes after Waheed Omar, a top advisor to President Ghani, on Tuesday said that the release of Taliban prisoners is a time-consuming process and there is no need to panic. He said that the Afghan government remains committed to the prisoner swap with the Taliban, but in order to make this happen, there is a need for good intentions from both sides about the issue.

Earlier, a three-member delegation from the Taliban arrived in Kabul to discuss the issue of the Taliban’s prisoners. But the Taliban's front man Suhail Shaheen tweeted on Tuesday that the "technical team will not participate in fruitless meetings with relevant sides starting from tomorrow."

The prisoner release is a step outlined in the US-Taliban deal signed in Doha on February 29 and is intended to be a confidence-building measure to pave the way for the intra-Afghan talks.
And what, pray tell, are the Taliban — or this particular group of Taliban, at any rate — doing to build confidence that they can be trusted?

Taliban Ex-Prisoners Pledge No Return to Battlefield

[ToloNews] Jawid Faisal, the front man for the National Security Council, said: "According to the president's order, 100 Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
prisoners were released after they pledged not to return to the battlefield, also considering their health status, age, and the length of their imprisonment, and to fight better against coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
and to make progress in peace talks, they were released."

But Taliban front man Zabihullah Mujahid said the release of Taliban prisoners was not based on the group's agreement with the United States, and that the process is unacceptable for the group.

"the stalemate will continue to be there if the entire prisoners of the Islamic Emirate weren’t released including the 15 individuals (15 high profile Taliban inmates) who are the disputed ones," said Jalaluddin Shinwari, the attorney general in the Taliban regime.

Although the Afghan government has already released 200 Taliban prisoners, so far it is not clear when the Taliban will release 1,000 Afghan prisoners of war who were set to be released at the same time as the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners.

"As they discussed in the agreement with the United States, it must be implemented and inter-Afghan negotiations must begin and the country must get rid of this crisis," said Sayed Akbar Agha, a former Taliban commander.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, the enormous newt was trying to decide if Gloria was edible...
Taliban negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai
...Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, Head of the Taliban political office in Doha. He was a member of Rassoul Sayyaf's group in the war against the Soviets....
in an interview said that Washington and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
have been defeated in the war in Afghanistan. Stankizai also said that the Taliban does not recognize the Afghan government and that only "one delegate from the government will participate in the potential intra-Afghan talks."

"The Taliban must also show their goodwill, but unfortunately they do not know any word called 'goodwill,'" said Abdul Satar Hussaini, a member of parliament.
Precisely.

The newspaper also added that a brawl erupted in the refugee camp following the stabbing which left four other migrants colonists maimed, including a minor, who were hospitalized.

With the reason behind the brawl remaining unclear, Ekathimerini reported that tensions at the camp, which is hosting some 20,000 people, are frequently high.

India-Pakistan
Netanyahu thanks Modi for delivering hydroxychloroquine to Israel
[IndiaToday] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday thanked his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for rushing a five-tonne cargo of medicines, including anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, seen as a possible cure for Covid-19.

"Thank you, my dear friend @narendramodi, Prime Minister of India, for sending Chloroquine to Israel. All the citizens of Israel thank you!", Netanyahu said in a tweet Thursday evening.

The Israeli's PM's thanked India two days after a plane carrying materials used to make medicines for treating coronavirus patients arrived in Israel from India on Tuesday.
These are APIs (Active Pharma Ingredients) for Israel to process compound doses from, and are way cheaper to import and then process than finished, packaged doses. The Indian companies spend more on storage, packaging and processing and the cost gets added to finished drugs.

Thank you, my dear friend @narendramodi, Prime Minister of India, for sending Chloroquine to Israel.

All the citizens of Israel thank you! pic.twitter.com/HdASKYzcK4
- PM of Israel (@IsraeliPM) April 9, 2020

The five-tonne shipment included ingredients for drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, being seen worldwide as the best possible cure as of now for treating Covid-19 patients.

The dreaded coronavirus has infected nearly 10,000 people in Israel and claimed 86 lives. As many as 121 others are on ventilators in serious condition.

The Indian consignment reached Israel within days after Netanyahu spoke to Modi on April 3, requesting supply of hydroxychloroquine, with India being the world's largest producer and exporter of the drug.

India, however, had to restrict its export to meet domestic contingencies.

Netanyahu had been in touch with Modi ever since the coronavirus crisis erupted. He had made a special request on March 13 asking the Indian prime minister to approve and allow export of masks and pharmaceuticals to Israel.

"I also spoke to the prime minister of India, my friend Narendra Modi. We are dependent on supply lines from various countries. We are looking into it all the time," Netanyahu had then said addressing a press conference.
Delivery of larger volumes of APIs to the US too is now possible, thanks to the lifting of all curbs on Indian drug API exporters by the US FDA.

#3  Corruption and an overabundance of laws, taxes and red-tape in India make it very difficult for a corporation with structure and working style fashioned in liberal economies to do business.

The fastidiously anal-retentive academia that is elevated to positions of economic advisory here ensure that common sense and reason are eclipsed by their own Socialist creeds disguised as 'corporate responsibilities' and more don'ts than dos. While this may be a good thing because corporates from liberal economies are perceived as greedy entities which if left to their whims would leech the planet and humanity dry and feed us to ourselves; it also makes India a rather less favoured business destination. Unless you're prepared to reap more goodwill than profit for the first few decades.

Also, it has been seen that western and other international companies tend to often ingratiate themselves with the politicals, seeking then to engineer outcomes and policies. This may be another reason they are allowed very little traction.

It's a trade-off really. India never gets the kind of business it could, but then it can always tell a Zuckerberg to pack up his FreeBasics thingy and get lost.

I too believe every nation, especially one as large as America could well to raise an indigenous labour force, and there should be lesser and lesser import of labour as that also means import of culture. We all know that the cultures of societies cheap labour comes from are not always easily integrated in liberal countries.

German FM restricts Zoom use due to security concerns, Zoom hires Google security chief
[IsraelTimes] Germany’s foreign ministry has restricted use the Zoom, telling employees in an internal memo that security and data protection weaknesses make the conference call service too risky for use, Rooters reports.

Zoom hires ex-Facebook security chief as Google bans app

[Jpost] Zoom Video Communications Inc has tapped former Facebook security chief Alex Stamos as an adviser as safety and privacy concerns about its fast-growing video-conferencing app drive a global backlash against the company.

That backlash includes a move on Wednesday by Alphabet Inc's Google to ban the desktop version of Zoom from corporate laptops.

In a stark illustration of Zoom's security issues, officials at Berkeley High School in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, said they suspended use of the app after a "naked adult male using racial slurs" intruded on what the school said was a password-protected meeting on Zoom, according to a letter to parents seen by Rooters.

Taiwan and Germany have already put restrictions on Zoom's use, while Elon Musk's SpaceX has banned the app over security concerns. The company also faces a class-action lawsuit.

A Berkeley school district spokeswoman said it was possible a password had been shared, allowing the intrusion. But she added that the entire district was putting Zoom on pause for at least "a few days" to consider how to use and train for video-conferencing.

Coronavirus lockdowns have driven a surge in Zoom usage, even as concerns have grown over its lack of end-to-end encryption of meeting sessions, routing of traffic through China and "zoombombing," when uninvited guests crash meetings.

Zoom shares were up 3.8% in late trade on Wednesday after shedding a third in value over the previous 10 days.

Woman faces charges after bank hacking claims against her NASA astronaut wife
[NYPOST] The woman who accused her estranged NASA astronaut wife of hacking her bank account from space has been charged with making false statements to federal authorities, officials said this week.

Summer Worden, 44, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Houston in what was the latest twist in her bizarre saga with decorated NASA astronaut Anne McClain, according to the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Texas.

Worden, a former Air Force intelligence officer, and her astronaut wife have been locked since 2018 in a divorce that has involved a nasty custody battle.

Last year, Worden filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission claiming that McClain illegally accessed her bank account during a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station, in possibly the first crime committed from space, prosecutors said.

She then lodged the same allegation against McClain in a July 2019 interview with NASA’s Office of the Inspector General, officials said.

Worden claimed she opened a new account in September 2018, then reset her login information in order to prevent McClain from accessing her accounts, but the new indictment alleges she opened the account in April 2018 and didn’t change the credentials until January 2019.

Iraq
Iraq names its third prime minister in 10 weeks
[THEBAGHDADPOST] Iraq’s president named intelligence chief Mustafa al-Kadhimi as prime minister-designate on Thursday, the third person tapped to lead the country in just 10 weeks as it struggles to replace a government that fell last year after months of deadly protests.

Kadhimi was nominated by President Barham Salih, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported, shortly after the previous designated prime minister, Adnan al-Zurfi, announced he was withdrawing having failed to secure enough support to pass a government.

Iraq, exhausted by decades of sanctions, war and political corruption now faces economic ruin, social unrest and a growing outbreak of the new coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
, all of which it must face with only a caretaker cabinet.

Adel Abdul Mahdi, who resigned under pressure from anti-government protests in November, still heads the government as caretaker prime minister. Salih’s first choice to replace him, Mohammed Allawi, withdrew on March 1 after four fruitless weeks trying to gain support.

Like Salih’s previous choices to replace Abdul Mahdi, Kadhimi is seen as a political independent, who will have to amass support from the powerful sectarian parties that dominate Iraq’s legislature to approve a cabinet within a month.

The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. and Britannia, returned after the U.S. invasion in 2003. He has held his role heading intelligence since 2016.

"I will work tirelessly to to present Iraqis with a program and cabinet that will work to serve them, protect their rights and take Iraq towards a prosperous future," Kadhimi wrote on Twitter.

Zurfi had been rejected immediately by parties allied with Iran who viewed him as a threat to their political and economic power in Iraq, calling him an "American joker" for his ties with the U.S.-backed authorities that ruled Iraq after the 2003 invasion. Thursday marked the 17th anniversary of the day that U.S.-led troops occupied Baghdad.

Zurfi had signalled he would check the power of Iran-aligned militias in Iraq. Kurdish parties finally decided on Wednesday not to back Zurfi, sealing his fate.

US charges 2 with terror crimes over threats to spread virus, another cues herself up in Tahoe
[IsraelTimes] Cases come after deputy attorney general tells federal prosecutors virus is a ’biological agent’ and those who seek to disseminate it can be prosecuted under terrorism statutes.

The US Justice Department charged two people with federal terrorism offenses on Wednesday for allegedly claiming they were intentionally trying to spread the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
The charges, in cases in Texas and Florida, come about two weeks after Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen instructed federal prosecutors across the US that they could charge people who threaten to spread the coronavirus under the terrorism statutes because the Justice Department considers it a "biological agent" under the law.

"Threats or attempt to use COVID-19 as a weapon against Americans will not be tolerated," Rosen wrote in the memo to US attorneys and the heads of all Justice Department agencies, including the FBI.

More than 400,000 people have been diagnosed in the US with the virus, which has prompted stay-at-home orders from politicians across the country. Authorities have reported an uptick in hate crimes and virus-related scams.

Prosecutors allege James Jamal Curry, 31, of St. Petersburg, Florida, coughed on an officer’s arm while he was being arrested on a domestic violence charge on March 27 and told the officer, "Well I got the Corona," according to court documents. He posted a bond and was released from jail the next day before officers were called to his home again ‐ for allegedly violating a court order to stay away from the victim ‐ and placed him under arrest a second time.

Police allege Curry resisted arrest, struggled with officers and then banged his head repeatedly against a patrol car’s windows. When a sergeant opened the door to move him away from the window, Curry spit in her mouth twice, court documents said. The sergeant wiped his saliva from her face, noticing it had blood in it, as Curry threatened to kill her, the documents said.

As officers put a hood over his head to prevent him from spitting at them again, Curry shouted at the sergeant, "I have Corona (expletive), and I’m spreading it around," according to court papers.

Police obtained a warrant to test Curry for COVID-19, and the results came back negative. He was charged with perpetrating a biological weapons hoax and faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison if he’s convicted.

In the Texas case, 39-year-old Christopher Charles Perez was charged with a similar offense after he posted on Facebook that he had paid someone to spread the coronavirus at grocery stores in San Antonio because he wanted to deter people from visiting the stores.

The FBI investigated the case and determined that the threat was false, and no one had tried to spread the coronavirus at the stores. Perez was arrested on Tuesday.

Both Perez and Curry remained in federal custody on Wednesday, and it was not immediately clear if either had an attorney to comment on the allegations.

South Lake Tahoe woman arrested for licking items at grocery store

[MYNEWS4] A 53-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman was arrested Tuesday after licking items at a local Safeway.

Employees told South Lake Tahoe Police officers that Jennifer Walker was putting pieces of jewelry from the store on her hands and licking them. She then began loading her shopping cart with more store merchandise.

Employees told officers the items were unsellable because of the contamination.

Officers said Walker had $1,800 worth of items in her cart and determined she did not have the money to purchase the items.

Walker was arrested for felony vandalism and was booked in the El Dorado County jail.

Pope Francis Says Pandemic Is ‘Nature’s Response’ to Human Inaction over Climate Change
[BREITBART] Pope Francis said he believes the Chinese coronavirus pandemic is “certainly nature’s response” to humanity’s failure to address the “partial catastrophes” wrought by human-induced climate change.
So much for infallibility
Asked by British journalist Austen Ivereigh whether the COVID-19 crisis is an opportunity for an “ecological conversion,” the pontiff reasserted his belief that humanity has provoked nature by not responding adequately to the climate crisis.

Security forces were dispatched to the area and an investigation is underway now, he added.

[ZeroHedge] As some misguided liberals complain about fruits "left rotting on the trees" because Trump's immigration crackdown has left no undocumented migrants to pick the vegetables (a demonstrably false assumption), the Associated Press has offered an explanation for this phenomenon that also illustrates how disruptions in the businesses like the hospitality and food-service industry work their way through the supply chain, ultimately sticking farmers in the American Farm Belt with fields of vegetables that they can't sell, or even donate as local food pantries are now full-up with donations from restaurants.

The AP started its story in Palmetto, Fla. a city in Manatee County on the Gulf Coast, where a farmer had dumped piles of zucchini and other fresh vegetables to rot.

#1  Not sure if capitalism works anymore but 16 million Americans filed for unemployment over the last few weeks and farmers cannot find someone to pick their fruit and vegetables? Go figure.

#2  Picking fruits & vegetables is one thing, selling them is another. Or, how about letting the unemployed come and pick what they can take home--for free.
I am not so sure capitalism works anymore, either, especially when poorly run companies get bailed out by government or the Fed.

#4  The article does seem to focus more on Florida. I'm not a farmer, but I assume they can grow stuff most of the year down yonder.

Remember the free gov't cheese in the 1980's? Dairy farmers are already feeling the pain as milk consumption was going down already as people lean more to non-dairy items such as almond or oat "milk". In fact, I think one big producer filed for bankruptcy. Dean?

Woman Who Claims to Be a Nurse Threatens to Withhold a Ventilator From Trump Supporters
[PJMedia] On Saturday, a woman who claims to be a nurse threatened to withhold a ventilator from a potential patient because he supports President Donald Trump. Erika Waters, who described herself as an "RN Practitioner" in her Twitter bio, suggested that she would deny the man a ventilator due to his pro-Trump face mask.

"My wife sewed this face mask today to protect me from the Wuhan Virus and show support for President Trump," a man named George Martan tweeted.

To this, Waters responded, "I'll see you in ER. Please wear your mask so when we have to decide who gets the vent, it'll be easier. Thanks."

This tweet inspired a great deal of understandable outrage and some Twitter users reported the tweet to the social media company as a "threat."

As of Thursday, Waters's account (@NaplesAlleycat) has been deleted. Yet both the account and the tweet are still cached and accessible on Google."

Iran’s Khamenei Praises Islamic Response to Coronavirus: Applauds ‘Powerful Hand of the Infallible Imam’
[BREITBART] Western civilization is facing decline and fall as it struggles with the Chinese coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini...
said on Thursday.

Khamenei made a point of reminding Iranians that the U.S. is the main enemy and mocked Americans who fought over toilet paper at stores and purchased firearms as a sign of Western weakness.

"The problem of corona should not make us ignorant about the plots by our enemies and arrogant powers," he said.

He lamented that "confiscating other nations’ masks and buying guns" as well as fights over toilet paper are the "logical and natural outcome of the philosophy that governs western civilization," the offical IRNA news agency reports.

"Confiscating other nations’ masks, emptying shops, fighting over toilet paper and long lines for buying guns during the coronavirus outbreak are the logical and natural outcome of the philosophy that governs western civilization," Khamenei said in a live televised address which he also relayed on Twitter.

Air Force Targets Davis-Monthan For Bulk Of A-10 Cuts
The fighter fleet keeps trying to nibble away at the real effective CAS
[AZ Daily Independent] The Air Force plans to retire 42 A-10 aircraft at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson next year, according to a state lawmaker, a move that would cut the base's fleet of the storied "Warthogs" in half.

Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Tucson, identified the proposed cuts in letters to the Air Force and to House committees that said cutting the planes would harm military readiness and "bring serious harm to the economy in the community I represent."

Kirkpatrick, who said she was not briefed on the plan, called the move "inexcusable" in a statement Monday.

"I find it incredibly alarming that the Air Force would put out plans without properly briefing Congress nor transparency about the replacement process and timelines," her statement said. "The A-10 Warthog has a mission to protect our men and women in battle and I am committed to fighting in Congress to protect its mission."

An Air Force spokesman did not comment directly on Kirkpatrick's claim Monday, only repeating earlier statements that the service was committed to a $161 million upgrade of remaining A-10s, "our most effective close-air support platform."

A spokesperson for Davis-Monthan said he had not heard about A-10s at the base being affected, and he said he could not comment.

The Air Force unveiled its plan to reduce the A-10 fleet in the fiscal 2021 budget proposal that was released in February. That document called for the service to retire 44 "of the oldest and least ready" A-10s as the Air Force shifts to newer-generation aircraft.

#2  Way past time to tell the AF either quit mucking about CAS or we move it to the Army, material, equipment, personnel, and budget. If the Marines can have their own CAS, the Army can have theirs (and end Army attack chopper development as a alternative to the AF mishandling of CAS).

#4  There's an easy solution for the Air force. Inform them that any cuts made to the A-10 will be reflected by an order of magnitude in the entire air force budget. So cut 160 million from the A-10 funds, the air force gets a 1.6 billion dollar cut. Oh and anyone proposing the cuts gets retired to prison for treason.

#9  Lex, it's not sexy like a fighter plane. You could also be snide and say that buying a brand new airframe is good for your post-military career as a "paid consultant". There will be competent, hard working professionals in the US military trying to make the best use of this vehicle and hopefully they will have a better result than the ongoing multi-role "dumpster fire" that is the Littoral Combat Ship(LCS) program.

Have you ever watched The Pentagon Wars(1998)? There is a cutting remark about what the push to make a multi-role APC can do for you: (Wiki)...He delves into the mountains of paper documenting the Bradley's development history and comes to the conclusion that it is "a troop transport that can't carry troops, a reconnaissance vehicle that's too conspicuous to do reconnaissance, and a quasi-tank that has less armor than a snowblower, but has enough ammo to take out half of D.C."

Biden Cuts Hole In Mask So He Can Still Sniff People's Hair
[Babylon Bee] Joe Biden has committed to wearing a mask in public to be a good example and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Aides were disappointed and a little frightened, however, when Biden immediately cut a large hole in the middle of the mask so he could continue to invade people's personal space and sniff their hair, necks, and faces.

Staffers usually don't let Biden play with sharp objects, but he managed to find some safety scissors stashed behind the Metamucil in his campaign bus. Using the purple plastic scissors, he cut a large hole and then fitted the mask to his face, confident that he was protecting himself and others from the virus.

"That's better," he said as he cut a big hole for his schnoz. "Now I'm protecting against infection and I'm still able to give the ladies a good sniff. You know, in my day, I wore a mask just like this, as was the fashion at the time. All the kids at the pool would ask to play with the mask, and they'd run their fingers through it. In fact, one time, a gangster named CornPop was about to go cause some trouble at the sock hop, and I put some rocks in my mask and started swinging it around like a sling. You know, real Daniel and Goliath type stuff. He looked at me, tears in his eyes, and promised never again to go out and cause a ruckus."

"Anyway, that's why I'm your best choice for senator of the Roman Empire. Vote for Joe!" Biden suddenly came to and realized he was standing in a Walmart parking lot talking to a hobo.

Biden: ‘Coronavirus Is Helping My Numbers'
Some video clips in with the URL.
[SummitNews] Presumptive Democratic candidate Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
...The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...
said Wednesday that the coronavirus has ’helped’ his campaign.

When asked if the virus spread had hurt his campaign, Biden said "Based on the polling data, it’s helped me."

He took a swipe at President Trump, adding "The more he speaks, the more my numbers go up."

"I’m not being facetious." Biden added.

Imagine the meltdown that would ensue if Trump said this.

In the rest of the spluttering segment, Biden had to literally pause for a second to recall the number 13 and it’s difference from the number 3.

He also mixed up ABC News with ’Face The Nation’, a show on CBS News....

Giant Dinosaur Footprints Found On The Roof Of A Cave In France
[IFLScience] Heads up! Scientists have discovered the prehistoric footprints of a colossal dinosaur on the roof of a cave in France. Nope, this doesn't mean that giant dinosaurs were dancing on the ceilings of caves like a sticky-footed Spiderman, although it goes to show the wealth of prehistoric discoveries that could be found lurking in the geology all around us.

Recently reported in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, researchers from the University of Burgundy‐Franche-Comté discovered the three dinosaur trackways during an expedition in 2015 around the labyrinth-like Castelbouc Cave beneath the Causse Méjean plateau in southern France.

The tracks, made some 166 million to 168 million years ago, are extremely well-preserved, complete with impressions of digits, pads, and even claws. At a stonking 1.25 meters (4 feet) long, the prints belonged to some of the largest known dinosaurs worldwide.

It’s not certain what species of sauropod was responsible for the tracks, not least because they date to an age in the Middle Jurassic when sauropod evolution is hazy. However, their size suggests they might have belonged to a titanosaur, a diverse group of long-necked sauropods that includes the largest land animals known to have ever existed, such as the 37-meter-long (121-foot) Patagotitan that roamed southern Argentina.

So, how did these gentle giants' footprints end up on the cave roof?
This is a family blog, so I can't post my hypothesis....

A Georgia bar owner removed $3,714 worth of bills stapled to the walls to give to her unemployed staff
Tacky Tybee. I love and miss you. And I will be back soon
[CNN] Before the coronavirus pandemic, Jennifer Knox would walk into her bar and soak in the sounds of people chatting while sipping on their drinks and listening to local musicians strum along on their guitars.

Now, her restaurant, The Sand Bar -- located in Tybee Island, Georgia -- is quiet, with no customers or employees in sight.

Like many other restaurants, The Sand Bar had to close its doors after officials put stay-at-home orders in place and mandated restaurants switch to takeout and delivery only. The restrictions, put in place to help control the spread of the virus, also left businesses -- including Knox's -- struggling financially.

As she sat in her empty bar at the end of March and looked around, she realized there was an opportunity to help her now unemployed staff.

"We were sitting there doors locked and I'm like oh my gosh, 'there's money on the walls and we have time on our hands," she told CNN, referring to the bar's decor. "'We gotta get this money down.'"

For nearly 15 years, patrons have been leaving their mark on the island bar by writing on a dollar bill and stapling it on the walls and ceilings. Knox just celebrated her six-year anniversary of owning the bar.

Knox, who worked as a bartender at the bar for seven years before owning it, now runs the bar with her mother, Pam Hessler.

"I can't just sit here and do nothing," Knox said of the decision to take down the dollar bills to try and help her employees. "I'll do what I can for my people."

Over the next three and a half days, five volunteers took on the tedious task to help gently take down the weathered money. Some bills had dozens of staples in them, according to Knox. Some of the currency came from countries across the globe.

After the bills were taken down, it took about a week and a half to clean them off and get them counted. In total, $3,714 were collected and the stacks of bills stretched in piles across the entire bar counter top.

After hearing about Knox's act of giving back, several customers donated to the cause. In total, Knox was able to distribute $4,104 to her staff. Four bartenders and two musicians each were given $600, she said.

Tybee Island, one of Georgia's most popular vacation destinations, depends on beachgoers to keep the town's economy alive. The town has a population of about 3,000 people.

Knox said that March was the beginning of their busy season coming out of winter. Now, like everywhere else, their business is on hold, and Knox remains unsure of what the future holds.

In the spirit of giving, one of the bartenders decided to donate her portion to another Tybee Island bartender. Knox wants to continue to give back to the small island's service staff. She is still collecting donations to distribute.

"We all look out for each other," she said. "We are all in this together."
Knox said she is hopeful that The Sand Bar will reopen when all is over.

Spain could be seeing start of coronavirus decline
[FOXNEWS]Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez offered a hopeful tone before the national parliament on Thursday asking for its endorsement of a second two-week extension of Spain’s emergency lockdown.

"The fire starts to come under control... This war against the virus will be a total victory," he said, according to Sky News.

Health officials reported Thursday 5,756 new COVID-19 cases and 683 new deaths attributed to the virus over the previous 24-hour period. That is down compared to new 6,180 cases and 757 new deaths on Wednesday.

Jobless Claims Hit 6.6 Million
[BREITBART] New applications for unemployment hit 6.6 million in the week ended April 4, Labor Department data showed Thursday. The prior week, originally reported at 6.6 million, was revised to 6.9 million.

Claims from three weeks ago were also revised upward. These rose from around 1 million for the week ended March 21 to 3.3 million.

A staggering 16.8 million Americans have been thrown onto the unemployment rolls in just three weeks, underscoring the terrifying speed with which the coronavirus outbreak has brought world economies to a near standstill.

Garcetti Fail: Coronavirus Hits Homeless Housed in Los Angeles Rec Center
[BREITBART] In another setback for Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s effort to move homeless people into neighborhood recreation centers, a homeless individual who was sheltered at a rec center in Granada Hills has reportedly tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus, igniting fears that the virus could start to spread like wildfire among the city’s homeless population.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer announced Wednesday that 12 homeless people have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Among those is believed to be an individual who recently stayed at the Granada Hills Recreation Center in the San Fernando Valley.

It is believed to be the first time someone had tested positive for coronavirus at one of the L.A. rec centers converted into homeless shelters under the mayor’s plan.

Barr accuses media of waging 'jihad' against Trump-touted anti-malaria drug
[WashingtonExaminer] Attorney General William Barr claimed news coverage of an anti-malaria drug that has shown early signs of being able to treat the coronavirus became partisan once the president endorsed its usage.

President Trump has touted the use of hydroxychloroquine as a potential "game changer" in the fight to contain the virus, while scientists, including some who are working with the administration's response team, have been less optimistic about it.

During an interview with Fox News's Laura Ingraham that aired Wednesday night, Barr claimed that the media launched a crusade against the drug only after the president began recommending its use and dissemination.

"Before the president said anything about it, there was fair and balanced coverage of this very promising drug and the fact that it had such a long track record that the risks were pretty well-known, and as soon as he said something positive about it, the media has been on a jihad to discredit the drug. It’s quite strange," he explained. "The stridency of the partisan attacks on him has gotten higher and higher, and it’s gotten disappointing to see."

The attorney general also praised Trump's handling of the pandemic, labeling his efforts early on as "statesmanlike," while accusing the White House press corps of asking "snarky gotcha questions."

The president began touting the drug last month after a flawed study conducted in France showed promising results. His first reference to the drug came a day after the results of the study were aired on Fox News.

At a White House coronavirus task force briefing last weekend, Trump announced the administration had purchased "a tremendous amount" of hydroxychloroquine, which will be distributed to the states after the Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency approval for its use among coronavirus patients.

A day earlier, however, White House economic adviser Peter Navarro got into a "confrontation" with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci over the drug. Fauci has repeatedly downplayed its potential for success, noting there is no "strong" evidence that it can treat COVID-19.

Iowa Woman Arrested After Asking Cops to Check Drugs for Coronavirus
OMG, the ploy actually worked!
[BREITBART] An Iowa woman was arrested after allegedly asking the cops to check her stash of narcotics for traces of the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
Shawn Salmen, 53, has been charged with two felony drug charges and a first-time offense of marijuana possession, KCAU reported.

Court documents said that Salmen drove to the Sioux City Police Department shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday. Officers said she was sweating profusely, behaving erratically, and admitting to recently consuming methamphetamine.

Salmen also asked the officers to check her drugs for coronavirus, according to the court documents.

Officers conducted a search of her and her vehicle and found 14.4 grams of substance which tested positive for methamphetamine, a substance which Salmen claimed was marijuana, and assorted drug paraphernalia.

Police took Salmen to the Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center to take a drug test, which she failed. From there, she was booked into the Woodbury County Jail and has bonded out since.

Pakistan asks Afghanistan to hand over IS-Khorasan leader
[DAWN] Pakistan on Thursday asked Afghanistan to hand over Aslam Farooqi, the leader of the Afghan affiliate of the bad boy Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group, who was arrested by Afghan authorities last week.

A Foreign Office statement said the Afghanistan ambassador to Pakistain was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to convey Pakistain’s views with regard to the arrest of Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K) leader Farooqi, which was announced on April 5.

It was emphasised that Pakistain had been expressing its concerns about the activities of ISIS-K, "which were clearly detrimental to Pakistain", the FO spokesperson said, adding that Islamabad's position in this regard was being regularly shared with the Afghan government and others concerned.

"It was underscored to the ambassador that since Aslam Farooqi was involved in anti-Pakistain activities in Afghanistan, he should be handed over to Pakistain for further investigations," the statement said.

The FO underlined during the meeting that the two countries should "coordinate actions against the menace of terrorism, including through established mechanisms", it added.
