Death toll in Somalia car bombing hits five as governor survives
[ShabelleMedia] The corpse count in al-Shabaab
...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa...
's morning attack at Bandhere in southern Somalia has hit five with a regional governor being among those who were maimed, Somalia's police commander said, noting that security teams have since taken over the scene after the raid.

At least 11 people were critically maimed and have since been taken for treatment in various hospitals across the country, according to Hussein Adan, the area police commander. The al-Shabaab holy warriors grabbed credit for the attack in the early morning.

Adan said the holy warriors targeted a guest house that was hosting government officials at the time of the attack in Bandhere which is about 450 kilometers West of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The holy warriors used a vehicle laden with explosives while targeting the building, he added.

"The explosion destroyed most parts of the building and five security guards died in the blast," Adan said. Eleven people, including the governor Ahmed Bulle Gared, were maimed, he added.

The al-Shabaab extortionists usually target innocent civilians, security forces, and even senior government officials in their cowardly attacks across Somalia. The attack comes at the time Somalia is coordinating operations against the holy warriors across the country with the sole aim of securing the nation.

Mohamud Saney, who witnessed Tuesday’s attack, told the AP that they had "never heard anything as big as the earth-shattering kaboom." "It shook the earth like an earthquake."

Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS], and local militia in fighting the group. For the last seven months, at least 600 holy warriors have been killed with several towns also liberated from the bully boys.

Recently, a senior commander with the US military in Somalia said the federal government of Somalia has been making numerous requests for aerial support against the holy warriors but the Command has been declining as a strategy to avert possible civilian casualties in the process of launching dronezaps.

Madagascar migrants death toll hits 34 after boat sank
[AlAhram] The corpse count from the sinking of a boat carrying migrants colonists from Madagascar to the French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte has risen to 34, authorities said on Tuesday.

The boat, which was carrying about 60 passengers, sank off the island's northern coast on Saturday night.

Initial reports on Monday put the corpse count at just over 20.

Bodies recovered by the authorities on Tuesday, including those of three children, were "in an advanced state of decomposition", Jean Edmond Randrianantenaina, director of the Port, Maritime and River Agency (APMF) told AFP.

An investigation is underway.

All but one of the 24 survivors rescued Saturday night by fishermen reportedly fled before the authorities arrived, and that was a young pregnant woman.

According to a source at the gendarmerie, the boat capsized due to overloading.

The APMF had in a statement Monday that the dead had "clandestinely taken a boat headed to Mayotte, but that sank".

Investigators want to track down the smugglers, who are suspected to be among the survivors on the run, and establish how they operated.

Many migrants colonists try each year to reach the French territory of Mayotte, which lies north of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.

In 2021, more than 6,500 people were detained trying to enter the territory clandestinely, according to French authorities.

There are no reliable statistics on how many people have bit the dust attempting such crossings. A French senate report published in the early 2000s estimated that around 1,000 people were dying each year.

Saudi-Backed Coalition Sends Three More Brigades to Confront STC in Aden
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Forces loyal to Saudi Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. Fifteen of the nineteen WTC hijackers were Saudis, and most major jihadi commanders were Saudis, to include Osama bin Laden. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman quietly folded that tent in 2016, doing terrible things to the guys running it, and has since been dragging the kingdom into the current century...
arrived at the Saudi-led coalition forces headquarters in al-Buraiqa district, in the city of Aden, southern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
, on Monday.

Local sources explained that Saudi Arabia is in the process of bringing in three brigades of Death Eater Salafist elements, the so-called "Dera al-Watan" forces, to Aden in the coming days, noting that these forces were trained in the areas of "Khoura Omira" and "Ras al-Ara" near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, west of restive Lahj
... a Yemeni governate located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the stomping grounds on the southern secessionist al-Harak movement
province.

"The command of the Saudi forces has brought the Special Tasks Battalion from Dera al-Watan to Aden," the sources said, adding that the battalion’s tasks are to protect the headquarters of the Dera al-Watan forces command in al-Sha’b area.

The command of the Saudi forces will distribute those forces to the various areas of Aden city to secure it.

Rashad al-Alimi, the president of the Riyadh-formed "Presidential Council", issued a decision at the end of January to form the so-called "Dera al-Watan" forces associated with Saudi Arabia, with the goal of securing his presence in Aden in the face of threats from the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council militia

New York attacker receives life sentence in prison
[NPASyria] Up on failure to reach a unanimous decision for a death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
, the man who was convicted of killing eight people by driving a truck on Manhattan bike path in New York City in 2017 received on Monday a life sentence in prison without parole.

The 35-year-old Uzbek, Sayfullo Saipov,
...the Uzbeck lone wolf from Paterson, NJ, where he lived next to the Omar Mosque. He rented a truck for the purpose of running over as many people as possible while screaming “Allahu akhbar,” though he only managed to kill eight for ISIS and wound 12 more despite also crashing into a school bus. He came to the U.S. under President George HW Bush’s Diversity Immigrant Visa program in 2010, one of millions of Uzbeks to take advantage of the offer...
will spend his life sentence at Colorado’s Supermax facility, the most secure US federal prison.

Saipov was convicted in January by a federal jury of committing murder with a goal of joining Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS), and he planned the attack and showed no regret after the killings on Oct. 31, 2017.

Five Argentinian tourists, two Americans and a Belgian woman were killed.

Defense lawyers said the life sentence for Saipov, who was convicted of 28 counts, including a murder, was appropriate and sufficient to protect society.

Saipov’s case is the first federal death penalty
trial since President Joe The Big Guy Biden

2 dead, 8 injured in Khuzdar blast
[Dawn] Two people were killed while eight others were maimed in a blast in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
’s Khuzdar district on Tuesday night, with Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari calling it a terrorist incident.

Khuzdar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fahad Khosa told Dawn.com that the blast took place at Sultan Road near Do Talwar Chowk.

He said that the bomb was attached to the vehicle using magnets and then detonated through a remote device.

He said that as a result of the blast, 20-year-old Naveed Shahwani — the son of Dawn correspondent Wahid Shahwani — and a trader named Amanullah, both of whom were in the vehicle, had died while eight others were maimed.

The SSP also said that initial reports suggested the perpetrators had targeted the trader.

FM Bilawal, in a statement, condemned the "terrorist attack". He said that those targeting innocent civilians had nothing to do with the nation or religion and could not even be called humans.

He further said that the government and the nation were intent on eradicating terrorism.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo also condemned the blast, and expressed sorrow over the deaths and offered condolences to the families.

"Terrorists are targeting innocent citizens. The plot to destabilise the province by spreading terror and chaos will be foiled," he said in a statement, adding that terrorism should be condemned by all.

"We will have to stand united against terrorists," he said, directing the officials concerned to make the security in Khuzdar more effective.

Last month, two coppers bit the dust and another two were critically injured when a magnetic bomb attached to their vehicle went kaboom! in Khuzdar. Police officials said the bomb went kaboom! when the vehicle was on patrol near Jhalawan Complex.

The driver of the vehicle lost his life on the spot while three cops were maimed, one of whom later died in the hospital.

Undercover cops infiltrating anti-overhaul protests in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem – report
[IsraelTimes] Civil rights lawyer says practice inappropriate for non-violent mostly peaceful rallies; police source tells Haaretz practice is to gauge mood of crowd, protect them from attacks.

Undercover coppers are posing as protesters at rallies against the government overhaul in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to collect information on those attending the demonstrations, the Haaretz daily reported Tuesday.

Mass protests against the government’s controversial plans to remake the judicial system, weakening its powers to act as a check against the politicianship, have been ongoing for 10 weeks.

According to the Haaretz report, the undercover officers are relaying information in real-time about the protesters, rather than just observing.

An unnamed police source told the outlet that the officers were stationed in the crowd to gauge the mood of those gathered, as well as to protect them from attack.

While there have been multiple incidents of violence toward protesters around the country, there have been no reports of them being thwarted or explicitly brought to a conclusion by an undercover police officer embedded with the demonstrators.

The Haaretz report said protesters last week in Jerusalem noticed an undercover officer in their midst, carrying a national flag, a symbol of the protest movement.

The cop had been at a protest earlier in the day, clearly identified as an officer, before attending the second protest ostensibly trying to blend in with the crowd.

The report said that the crowd in Tel Aviv at a protest last week also identified what they thought was a police officer who had "infiltrated."

On both occasions, the alleged coppers apparently refused to identify themselves when challenged — under policing procedures, an officer is allowed to maintain their cover if there may be a risk to safety or if breaking cover may impact their chances of making arrests.

When asked for comment by Haaretz, Israel Police said in a general statement that it uses both overt and undercover officers to fight crime, maintain public order and police traffic.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
Ann Suciu of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel told the newspaper that the practice of using undercover coppers was not appropriate for the non-violent mostly peaceful rallies, which have only seen pockets of scuffles between protesters and police, with both sides charging that the other instigated.

"Even if there are extremely unusual cases that justify the use of undercover coppers, it is clear that this method, which is usually intended for dealing with serious crime, is not suitable for dealing with non-violent mostly peaceful demonstrations," she said.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Israel Police have tussled recently over the response to massive nationwide protests against government plans to rein in the judiciary, with the minister pushing for cops to take more aggressive measures against demonstrators, whom he terms "anarchists."

Channel 12 news reported that Ben Gvir or aides had on several occasions contacted police commanders below police chief Kobi Shabtai during operations, bypassing the normal chain of command.

According to several news outlets, as protesters blocked roads and freeways on Thursday, Ben Gvir or his aides made a number of calls to police commanders in the field to press them on how many fines had been handed out or whether they had opened roads yet.

Officers have reportedly complained to Shabtai and others about being stuck between their duties and Ben Gvir’s requests, which do not always dovetail.

Last week, Ben Gvir attempted to remove Tel Aviv police chief Ami Eshed after grousing that cops were treating protesters with kid gloves and allowing them to block roads and the Ayalon Highway.

That decision was frozen by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, placing the top prosecutor and the far-right police minister on a collision course.

Earlier this month, police used stun grenades and water cannons against demonstrators who blocked a key junction in Tel Aviv during the March 1 "day of disruption." A number of coppers have been questioned by the Police Internal Investigations Department on their decisions to lob stun grenades into the crowd.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
there has generally been little animosity between protesters and police on the ground — while some chants at the protests disparage the ultra-nationalist police minister, others describe serving officers are "brothers," with some demonstrators handing out flowers to cops on duty.

Concern grows for Iranian women dancing unveiled in viral ‘Calm Down’ video
[IsraelTimes] Activists say 5 detained and forced to apologize for dance clip set to song by Nigerian singer Rema, which began circulating online around International Women’s Day

After the initial viral footage of the five, another video emerged on social media of four women, their heads fully covered, stepping forward one by one to express regret.

It appeared to have been filmed in a similar Ekbatan area, but neither the video nor the circumstances in which it was made could be verified.

Whether the women had been released was also not immediately clear.

Ekbatan, a middle-income area popular with young professionals and families, saw repeated anti-regime actions in the past few months.

Rema retweeted video of the women dancing with their long hair uncovered and commented: “To all the beautiful women who are fighting for a better world, I’m inspired by you, I sing for you and I dream with you.”
