Frog found in Burger King salad
Amsterdam - A woman eating at a Burger King restaurant in the Netherlands found a live frog in her salad, the company confirmed on Sunday. "What's happened is that one of our guests on Thursday evening found a frog in her salad. She went to the manager and showed him the frog. He saw it was there and that's a fact," said spokesperson Christine Frey. Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad quoted the customer, identified as 23-year-old Astrid Roek, as saying "it was a big black thing, a frog or a toad."

She said she found the amphibian while halfway through her meal at the Burger King restaurant at The Hague's central train station. "I stood up and screamed the place upside-down," she told the paper. Roek has submitted a complaint to the Dutch Food and Wares Authority, but is not expected to sue for emotional damages or punitive damages in the matter: large compensation suits are virtually unknown in the Netherlands. "We know that everybody sues everybody in the United States, but Holland is not like that, it's not how it works here," Frey said.

Frey said the company had given its excuses and is trying to figure out how the frog got into the salad. It appeared likely it happened between being packaged at the restaurant and when the diner reported finding it. Frey said the company's basic salad supplier was confident the frog was not in the large, vacuum sealed bags of salad the restaurant receives. "The fact is - it's in the process of how we prepare our basic salad - it's just not possible a frog will survive," Frey said.

#6  Frog? Salad?

OH! It is in Europe! I wondered how they'd gotten a Frenchman in a McDonalds. . .

Only thing missing is quiche, and an overturned flaming automobile.

#7  I wondered how they'd gotten a Frenchman in a McDonalds. . .

Actually, french are quite fond of Mc Donald, and IIRC, they spent twice as much in it per capita than in the USA, and it is adapted to local taste anyway; not too fond of it, but my little niece really likes it.

Britain
10,000 Spitfires head for Germany
The last time they flew across the Channel, they were 32 feet long, with Rolls-Royce engines and wings bristling with 20mm cannons.

Now they measure all of 18 inches, have no engine and not so much as a peashooter - but their "pilots" still risk being thrown into German captivity.

The Sunday Telegraph has learnt that a "big wing" of more than 10,000 inflatable Spitfires will this week cross into Germany and, when the World Cup starts on Friday, they could face the kind of frosty reception encountered by their wartime counterparts.

England football fans have been warned of arrest by the British Home Secretary, threatened with "zero tolerance" by a German police chief, and told not to mention the war by the creator of Basil Fawlty himself. Some have responded by packing inflatable Spitfires by the thousand into their camper vans to sell throughout Germany and finance their World Cup trips.

Alf Ancell, 31, who designed the Spitfires, admitted he had found plenty of fans willing to sell the planes in Germany. . . .

#1  Perhaps Germans would not object if instead of Spittfires the English brought replicas of gas chambers. Seeems that the Germans don't know the concept of freedom of expession.

BTW I have German friends whose son has decorated his room with scaled models of Allied planes, or to be more precise Allied bombers

Europe
Neighbours of Swiss suicide clinic complain as corpses clog up the lift
The Swiss clinic where dozens of people have been helped to die, including British patients, has a new problem: the neighbours are complaining that they are fed up with bodies being taken out of the apartment block, where the clinic is located, in the communal lift. The group Dignitas, which has attracted controversy since it began to offer assisted suicide eight years ago, uses a flat in a building on the outskirts of Zurich. More than 40 British patients have ended their lives in the flat, where a doctor administers a lethal injection after correct legal procedures have been followed.

But residents of the apartment block say they have had enough of the bodies being taken down from the fourth floor in body bags in the lift. One resident, Gloria Sonny, 52, told the British Medical Journal: 'Almost every day the bodies of people who have chosen to kill themselves are taken down in the lift. It's horrid and I've had enough.'

#2  "Almost every day the bodies of people who have chosen to kill themselves are taken down in the lift. It's horrid and I've had enough"

I'd say. That would be 8 x 365 bodies? More than the Bagdad city morgue. And only 40 were British? Wonder if they take Visa or Amex?

Southeast Asia
Indonesia to give 215 dollars to relatives of quake dead
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will give two million rupiah (215 dollars) to the families of each person who died in last week’s earthquake, the country’s disaster relief agency said on Saturday. Each survivor of the quake will be given 10 kilograms of rice per month plus a daily allowance of 3,000 rupiah, the National Disaster Relief Coordinating Board said in a statement. Each family who survived will also receive a one-off allowance of 100,000 rupiah to buy basic household utensils and another 100,000 rupiah to buy clothes.

#1  Oh the largess of the dirty Indo government!

I think there'll still be change from that A$3,000,000 Australia gave Jakarta immediately following the earthquake.

Not to mention the US and Australian teams that went in patching up the place and helping survivors, and other international aid.

I think Jakarta might make a profit out of the disaster after all they won't have even redistributed the aid Australia gave.

#2  Quick calculation estimating final toll of 7,000 dead means dirty Indos will give US$1.5 million out in payments to the families of each person killed.

Well there certainly is change from that for the US$2.25 million donated by Australia.

Gay Pride Parade Held in Fresno's Tower District
The annual Gay Pride Parade rolled through the Tower District Saturday morning. It's the 16th year for the event, with the theme "Out in the Valley," and many say the city is making strides when it comes to accepting the gay community. From dancers to bikers, the parade was bigger this year, with more than 50 groups marching, including gay Democrats, gay veterans, and parents and friends of gays and lesbians.

Those in the gay community say these events make them feel closer to their neighbors. "It gives you an outlet and makes you part of the community, instead of being all by myself and alone," said spectator Linda Hancock.

Several campaigning politicians took part, including Fresno City Councilmember Cynthia Sterling. The parade's celebrity marshall was MTV personality and Fresno native Matthew Fashion. "I'm so happy to see everybody here today, and I'm telling you, you have no idea how far this town has come. I love you Fresno!" said Fashion.

And the love was also felt by some straight spectators supporting not only their gay friends, but the area as well. "'Cause I love the Tower District. I think it's soul of Fresno...very eclectic," said spectator Patricia Brewer.

The pride festival was set to wrap up at 8:00pm Saturday with films shown at the Tower Theater.

#9  I'm not actually picking on you, Thinemp Whimble2412, but your post rings a bell that needs to be heard and discussed in America.

Is the standard now simply "Death to America" bad, everything else good?

I think not. America's greatest threats come from within. The threats have many faces... a few of the more obvious...

Multiculturalists who can weaken us through rainbow idiocy and moral equivalence - all cultures are equal...

Tranzi fools who want to have open borders, both those with the intent of destroying us and those who are too self-absorbed in their "cause of the day" approach to life and too stupid to see that would be the effect...

Socialists who think the Constitution can be redefined and interpreted to mean anything that suits their agenda of removing the last stumbling block to a Global Workers Party... let the looting of America begin!

"Progressives" who think the Constitution is merely a canvas upon which to draw their agenda of anything goes, making up rights and privileges as they go... I recall Kennedy lamenting, during the Alito confirmation IIRC, that it was important to continue the "progress" of interpreting the Constitution and that Alito might endanger that redefining process...

Anarchists who have sold the meme of anti-Americanism, no matter where or how applied, will somehow lead to Gaia or Nirvana or Saving the Planet or [insert idiot goal here]... That they don't kill themselves, in line with their recommendation to the rest of us, should clarify their true intent...

Value relativists who care only about their tiny single-issue goal, demanding that it be embraced as normal - when it has been roundly rejected all this time for being abnormal, and not giving a damn if in doing so they destroy the core value system that made America what it is...

A number of leading "issues" are merely the chosen favorites of the media machines - pushing forward those issues that, ultimately, may lead to the adoption of their agenda. In other words, wearing down opposition through endless repetition and recasting of the "debate" until the majority can no longer differentiate and discriminate (yes, that means to make choices), until generations have been indoctrinated by their cohorts in education to accept that fucked-up is okay and even laudable, until no one can tell anymore just what the hell is actually being demanded - and what will be lost by acceding to those demands, is not a democratic process at all. It is disinformation and coercion. It is Soviet-styled anti-Americanism propaganda institutionalized. Eventually forcing everyone to accept imaginary rights and moral equivalency of fringe groups, eroding what has been the core value system that made America what it is, not democracy. It is subversion and abuse of public trust.

Everyone has an agenda, of sorts. The "progressives" would be surprised to find that, for the majority, the agenda is to stay the same, leave me alone, and STFU. No agenda is more important any other unless it is the will of the majority of the citizens. I'm sure others can say these things better, but I believe that is the gist of the matter. America is a bona-fide Representative Republic. When a majority of its citizens actually do favor a social sea-change, then so be it - but not until or unless that is the fact.
