Copperfield to impregnate woman onstage
Illusionist David Copperfield is planning to go one better than rival David Blaine by impregnating a woman live onstage. The magician will carry out the stunt in Germany, without - he insists - even touching the volunteer.

Copperfield tells PageSix.com: "There is a great deal of new territory to conquer. I'm going to make a girl pregnant. Naturally there will be no sex.
Bummer.
"Everybody will be happy about it, but I'm not telling you any more."

Nonsense.

Charles Dickens would never write something like that.

Grateful Dead keyboardist now merely Dead
Vince Welnick, who took over as the Grateful Dead's keyboard player in 1990 after a succession of predecessors met untimely deaths, has died at the age of 55, according to an announcement on his Web site. The San Jose Mercury News said he died in a hospital on Friday after being taken from his home in Forestville, California, and it quoted a person at his home as saying "it looks like he took his own life." Welnick had previously spoken of a deep depression after Jerry Garcia, founding guitarist of the iconic psychedelic rock band, died in 1995 and the group disbanded.

#10  Yes, the actuarial tables on the Dead keyboardist are NOT encouraging! I think Hornsby is going to be ok though.

I went to Dead shows from '78 to '95. Saw Vince play some killer tunes in those later years. They were the finest band in the land. The Rex Foundation did a Jerry memorial show last September for the 10 year anniversary of his death at the Greek Theater in Berserkeley. Bruce played, among many others (Trey Anastasio of Phish, Warren Haynes of Govt. Mule/Allman Bros.). It was a VERY hot show. The music lives on even if the players seem to be dropping like flies.

Nigeria: Odili is the best presidential candidate
Dr. Peter Odili, the governor of Nigeria's River State, has received support of Nigerians to stand for Nigeria's presidency, come 2007. According to Hon Lucky Amadi, the President of Eneka Caucus Foundation, Dr. Odil is the best person to replace Olusegun Obasanjo in position of Nigeria's presidency. He added that Odili is the best governor in Nigeria and holds high esteem internationally.

Amadi is of the view that Nigeria's future will be in good hands if placed in the hands of Odili. He does not doubt that what Nigeria needs is the doctor to begin on its path to prosperity. He also called upon those responsible to ensure that citizens of Nigeria's River State are put into consideration while giving out jobs in Nigeria.

Arabia
32 women register to run in Kuwait election
KUWAIT CITY - Thirty-two women were among 402 hopefuls who signed to stand in the June 29 Kuwaiti general elections at the close of candidate registration on Saturday. The women, who are voting and running in parliamentary elections for the first time in the oil-rich Gulf state, are due to kick off their election campaigns on Sunday.

The elections were called after Emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah dissolved parliament on May 21 following a bitter dispute between the government and opposition MPs over electoral reform. Opposition MPs have accused the government of deliberately blocking efforts to stamp out vote-buying by reducing the number of constituencies.

Of the 50 members in the dissolved parliament, 47 are bidding to retain their seats, including 28 of the 29 opposition MPs who pledged to back a request, filed by three of them, to quiz Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad Al Sabah. Several Islamist and liberal groupings are contesting the election, which is being branded by reformists as a “true battle between corruption and reform.” But the Islamist Ummah Party, launched last year as the first political party in an Arab Gulf state, said Wednesday it would boycott the polls because of fraud concerns.

The number of eligible voters is 340,000, of whom 195,000, or 57 per cent, are women. Kuwait has a native population of one million besides two million foreigners.

Britain
Blair plans state funeral for Thatcher
TONY Blair is backing a controversial plan to provide a state funeral for one of the Labour Party's most reviled enemies of recent decades: Margaret Thatcher.
I didn't even know she was dead. She didn't, either.
Scotland on Sunday can reveal that civil servants have been working for months on the details of Baroness Thatcher's funeral, even though there is no suggestion the 80-year-old is suffering from any life-threatening condition.
"Really. I'm quite healthy."
But Blair believes Thatcher's eventual passing should be marked with the first state funeral for a commoner since Winston Churchill more than 40 years ago. The proposal has astounded constitutional experts, who argue that - royalty aside - the honour is normally reserved for politicians who "saved the country at times of dire need".
Y'mean like helping to win the Cold War? And beating the Argies? And the First Gulf War?
The funeral plan has also sparked furious debate at the heart of the New Labour government, with a number of ministers opposing such a mark of respect for a Conservative Prime Minister.
Thus confirming our suspicions that they lack Blair's class.
The move is also likely to provoke a furious backlash from the grass roots of the party, where Thatcher is still detested for her stout opposition to the unions and policies in areas including employment, privatisation, gay rights and the Poll Tax during her 11 years in office. One Labour MP last night claimed the proposal proved Blair and his advisers in Downing Street had "finally lost contact with reality".

#1  There is a moving incident from Winston Churchill's funeral that shows how the unions then had class, even with respect to a political opponent. As the funeral barge sailed down the Thames, the dockworkers dipped the dockside cranes in salute to the great man.

Does anyone think they'd do the same now?

#2  Send her body over here when she dies - we'll give her the state funeral she deserves.

Bet there'd be quite a crowd of ordinary people passing by the bier, too.

If the Capitol isn't available (some of the Dems would probably have a fit at the suggestion), her funeral could be held at William & Mary College in Williamsburg, where she served as Chancellor for a time.

I'd certainly haul my ass down there.

IIUC, when she became PM, the 70's UK was in a dire shape, kinda like 2006's France, paralyzed by politicized unions, on the verge of bankruptcy, impotent and socialist (a situation similar to the USA and Reagan).
She pretty much saved the country, at least from socialism, that's why the likes of Ken loach and other red won't forgive her.

Caribbean-Latin America
Chavez inaugurates Venezuelan film studio
CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez inaugurated a Venezuelan film studio Saturday to counter what he called Hollywood's cultural "dictatorship." Chavez announced $11 million in funds for the complex as he toured movie sets, costume rooms and sat in a director's chair — all part of Venezuela's new "cultural artillery" to combat U.S. domination, he said. "It's a Hollywood dictatorship," he said. "They inoculate us with messages that don't belong to our traditions ... (about) the American way of life, imperialism."

He accused Hollywood movies of stereotypes that cast Venezuela and other Latin American countries as violent havens for criminals and drug traffickers. Chavez has pledged to use Venezuela's oil wealth to battle what he calls the evils of U.S.-style capitalism.

Fringe Commie on Cusp of Power in Peru
LIMA, Peru (AP) - Few could have guessed a year ago that a fringe radical who started his campaign with single-digit support could come so close to winning Peru's presidency. But retired army Lt. Col. Ollanta Humala, whose name means "warrior who sees all" in Quechua, has capitalized on the deep resentment of Peru's poor majority by promising to rewrite the constitution to strip power from Peru's political establishment, intervene in Peru's free-market economy and radically redistribute the wealth.
Taking it into the tank with Bolivia, Zim-bob-we and Belarus ...
Peru's middle classes are generally terrified by his economics and similarity to Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's militantly anti-U.S. president. That helps to explain why he is trailing behind Alan Garcia in the polls.
Chavez's meddling in Pervian politics hasn't helped his boy at all ...
But just making it to Sunday's runoff vote is quite an accomplishment, considering where he began. "We are a new project, with great drive, ideology and desire to serve the nation," Humala told tens of thousands of cheering followers at a rally Wednesday night in a Lima slum. "We are not corrupt, shameless, and we are not thieves."

Humala, 43, burst onto the political scene when he led a small-scale, bloodless military rebellion in 2000 in an isolated mountain region a month before ex-President Alberto Fujimori's corruption-riddled government fell.

During the campaign, the married father of two has repeatedly had to disavow the biases of his family, an ultranationalist clan, on subjects ranging from race to homosexuality. He also has tried to distance himself from Venezuela's Chavez, who openly endorsed him while insulting Garcia, his rival.

Bolivia Launches 'Agrarian Revolution'
On the Road to Zim-bob-we ...
LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) - Leftist President Evo Morales launched a sweeping land reform plan on Saturday by handing over roughly 9,600 square miles of state-owned land to poor Indians.
Morales marked the start of his "agrarian revolution" just weeks after nationalizing Bolivia's natural gas industry, giving foreign-owned energy companies six months to negotiate new contracts or leave.

Some land titles were handed out Saturday to Indian communities rather than individuals.
The ceremony came after talks broke down between Morales and agribusiness leaders on land reforms that involve handing out 77,000 square miles of government land - an area twice the size of Portugal - over the next five years. The government also has promised to redistribute some private holdings, generating further unease. One farmers' group has said it would form self-defense groups to prevent land seizures.

"The greatest need right now is the recuperation of our territory," Wilson Chacaray, a Guarani Indian leader, told the crowd. "The landowners, the foreign companies, the political parties that have always dominated this country took our land from us and that's why we live in misery."

The land currently targeted for redistribution was set aside for that purpose before Morales took office in January. None of it was been confiscated from large landholders. But the government says it will eventually seize and redistribute privately owned land that is unproductive, was obtained illegally or is being used for speculation.

Venezuela Receives Russian Assault Rifles
Venezuela on Saturday received 30,000 Russian-made assault rifles, the first shipment in a deal for 100,000 rifles. Defense Minister Orlando Maniglia said the AK-103 rifles and ammunition were being unloaded in Puerto Cabello, about 68 miles west of Caracas. Russia will deliver the remaining 70,000 rifles in two shipments, in August and October, Maniglia told government media.

China-Japan-Koreas
Today in History: the 17th anniversary of the Tienanmen Square massacare
from Wikipedia:

The suppression of the protest was symbolised in Western media by the famous film and photographs, taken on June 5, after the attack on the square, of a lone unarmed white-shirted man standing in front of a column of 18 tanks and APCs which were attempting to drive out of Tiananmen Square which had become a staging area for at least 60 or more tanks, and as the column approached an intersection on the Avenue of Eternal Peace, halting their progress. He reportedly said, "Why are you here? You have caused nothing but misery." The "tank man" jumped back and forth as the tank driver attempted to go around him. He continued to stand defiantly in front of the lead tank for a while, then climbed up onto the turret of the lead tank to speak to the soldiers inside, and then returned to his position blocking their way when the lead tank again attempted to move, just before being quickly pulled aside by six or seven onlookers who perhaps feared they were just about to shoot or roll on this man. Despite efforts, to this day Western media sources are unable to identify that solitary figure. . . .

John Howard seeks nuclear answers
AUSTRALIA would need to build several nuclear power plants to meet greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and ensure the viability of any industry.

As Prime Minister John Howard prepares to announce a wide-ranging inquiry into nuclear energy, the head of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Ian Smith, has confirmed "at least three" power plants would be required.

The Australian understands the Prime Minister is preparing to appoint chief scientist Jim Peacock, a supporter of nuclear power, to the inquiry panel.

Cabinet will tomorrow consider the inquiry's terms of reference, which are expected to include an examination of economic viability and environmental dangers.

"Are they affordable? Are they safe? What technological developments have been made and what methods are being worked on for the disposal of waste?" Mr Howard said yesterday.

"Concerns about climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, the rising costs of energy and the possible availability of a cheaper source of fuel, will form the basis of our arguments for this debate.
"Naturally, health, safety and proliferation issues will be crucial, including the potential of next-generation nuclear energy technologies to meet safety, waste and proliferation concerns; the waste processing and storage issues associated with nuclear energy and current world's best practice; and any security, safety or health issues emanating from nuclear energy," he said.

Despite calling for an open debate, government ministers yesterday dismissed a submission to cabinet made nine years ago by then science minister Peter McGauran that lists 14 possible sites for a nuclear reactor, including the southwest Sydney suburb of Holsworthy, Mount Isa, south Darwin, Adelaide and Perth.

Mr Howard said the ANSTO report, prepared by international energy consultant John Gittus, challenged the view that the cost of nuclear power was prohibitive.

Opposition science spokeswoman Jenny Macklin seized on an admission by ANSTO executive director Dr Smith, who told a Senate estimates hearing last week that Australia would require "multiple power stations to make the industry viable".

"John Howard wants to start a debate about nuclear power in this country, but he won't come clean on where any nuclear power stations will be," Ms Macklin said yesterday.

The Weekend Australian reported that Foreign Minister Alexander Downer had called for a nuclear-powered desalination plant to be built in his home state of South Australia to curb pressure on the Murray River.

Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said the nuclear energy inquiry, which is expected to report by the end of the year, would include consideration of nuclear enrichment plants in Australia. And Mr Macfarlane said he would consider proposals for a nuclear power plant sited in his own Toowoomba-based electorate of Groom.

However, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie pledged he would not jeopardise the state's coal industry by supporting a nuclear power plant.

#1  Displacing coal

The Premier of Queensland, Australia, some time ago said that he opposed the mining of uranium in his state because it could threaten the viability of the export coal industry.

The uranium industry has proposed that one of our best lawyers draft a bilateral safeguards agreement between Queensland and any country which buys its uranium so that they pledge under pain of UN Security Council sanctions not to feed any of it into their coal-fired power stations. That should solve the problem and give peace of mind to the Premier.

Sweden OKs Law to Take Liberia's Taylor
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - Swedish lawmakers have approved a law that makes it possible for the Scandinavian country to imprison former Liberian President Charles Taylor if a U.N.-backed tribunal convicts him of war crimes, government officials said Thursday.
Could they approve a law to shoot him?
The decision by the Swedish Parliament could remove a major obstacle that has stalled the former African warlord's trial in Sierra Leone. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nina Ersman said Sweden had not yet officially decided whether it would accept a request to take in Taylor. Such a step would need final approval from the government.

The U.N.-backed court has asked the Netherlands-based International Criminal Court to host the trial, fearing Taylor's trial in Africa might revive regional instability. The Netherlands agreed to the request on condition that a third country agrees to jail Taylor if he is convicted.

Kerstin Olsson, a spokeswoman for Sweden's foreign minister, referred to Sweden's previous rejection of the request, but would not say whether the government would alter its stance because of Parliament's decision. "The government has said no," Olsson said. "No new decision has been taken since the law was approved."

Today in History: the 64th anniversary of the Battle of Midway
Diving procedure for the SBD Dauntless (from an e-mail by Midway veteran Clay Fisher to the Battle of Midway Roundtable:

Check list before diving:
1. Shift to Low Blower.
2. Shift to low prop pitch. (We wanted full maximum power setting as we broke our dives.
3. Hit full split flaps. (In early 1942 the SBD had to reduce speed to be able to split the flaps, which was tough when under attack. Douglas came out with an engineering change that allowed splitting the flaps at any speed. Also, we could dive at various split flap settings.)
4. Open the cockpit hatch. I think this was to prevent the windshield from fogging up due to the changes in temperatures during the dive. (Our gunner's hatch was always open due to the twin gun mounts. In combat, the gunner was facing the tail during the dive. For training dives, he turned his seat to face forward. Those gunners were some of the bravest!

If I remember correctly, at our standard 70-degree dive with full extension of the dive flaps, our maximum diving speed was only about 240 knots. You felt like you were hanging on a "string". That slow speed let us release a bomb between 1500 and 1000 feet. We could do a "snap pullout" -- the black out was more severe but a shorter time period. I always tried to lower my head for the pullout, and it reduced the blackout.

In our standard dive, the plane was vertical to the water or ground, but the "track" downward was 70 degrees. You felt no pressure on your butt or seat belt when you had it right. It was like you were floating. . . .

Our standard squadron tactic was to try to position the formation so we could roll down in either a left of right 90 degree turn to pick up the target's course. We did not form the old pre-war "Hollywood" echelon for the individual "breaks" from the formation. We flew 3-plane sections and 3-section divisions. On the break, the #1 plane dropped down and immediately broke 90 degrees (either right or left). #2 followed, then #3. The following sections ditto. The longer we could stay in formation so our gunners could fire, the more protection we had against the fighters. We practiced to see how fast we could break into our dives. With sufficiently close intervals, we could have all 9 dive bombers in a column. The inside of the split flaps were painted red, and the last plane could see eight "red bars." That prevented possible midair collisions if a pilot got out of position. If our flight leader rolled left into the dive, he turned left after his dive recovery and continued straight ahead. The other 8 planes would expedite a join-up on the inside of his turn. Getting back into formation for mutual protection was essential. We practiced this tactic, and were good at it, although in combat it was almost impossible to get all 9 planes back into formation.

Science & Technology
Allah hates Bill Gates
Question :

I would like to open a shop for repairing computers. It is well known that there are copied disks for the operating system to be installed on the computers. Is it permissible to use these disks to install them on customersÂ’ computers after setting them up? Is the money earned in return for that regarded as halaal or haraam?.

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

It is not permissible to make copies of disks without the permission of their authors, because of copyright. This is a valid right and it is not permissible to transgress it, in accordance with the conditions drawn up by both parties.

It says in the fatwas of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas, led by Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz: It is not permissible to make copies of programs for which the authors have not allowed copying, except with their permission, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Muslims are bound by their conditions.” And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “A Muslims’ wealth is not permissible unless he gives it willingly.” And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever reaches a permissible thing first, he has more right to it.” This applies whether the author of this program is a Muslim or a kaafir who is not in a state of war with the Muslims, because the rights of a kaafir who is not in state of war with the Muslims are to be respected like the rights of a Muslim. And Allaah knows best. End quote from Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said the following with regard to this matter:

This is to be based on what is known practice (al-‘urf). If a person wants to make a copy for himself and the original author of the program did not state that it is not allowed to make copies for personal or public use, then I hope that there is nothing wrong with it, but if the original author of the program stated that it is not allowed to make copies for personal or public use, then it is not permitted at all. End quote.

Based on that, it is not permissible to copy the disks for operating systems etc, so long as the author has not given permission for that.

But if these disks belong to a company in a state that is at war against the Muslims, there is nothing wrong with copying them.

And Allaah knows best.
