Kerry: running as the 'Un-Gore' and 'Un-Hillary'
by Susan Estrich

While Al Gore is commanding all the attention of those searching for the "un-Hillary," there's another candidate who is quietly doing the work it actually takes to run for president.

While Al Gore continues to protest that he isn't running, there's another candidate who is privately making no bones about his future prospects.

While Al Gore has yet to acknowledge that he lost, there's another candidate who is belatedly addressing the mistakes that caused his defeat.

The "un-Gore," "un-Hillary" is John Kerry.

He is doing everything Gore isn't doing to prepare for a presidential run in 2008.

He is running hard and running smart.

Watch him, and you know Gore has a lot of catching up to do - that it isn't just a matter of making a movie and then standing back and waiting for the votes to come in.

Running for president is a lot of work, and John Kerry is working hard.

He is finally addressing the Swift Boat lies that, more than anything else, undermined his campaign. He is working his lists, traveling the country and re-recruiting his old backers, one-by-one.

Don't count him out for a minute.

How does he get past the electability argument? I asked one of his supporters. After all, electability was his claim last time, and it isn't an argument you can easily make twice. He's a different man, this friend and supporter told me.

That is certainly evident in his approach to his military record.

Last time, with his record under attack, he basically did nothing. He let them attack his heroism, his integrity and his manhood, and he simply didn't answer.

It was positively Dukakis-like, and it killed him.

Since February of last year, he and his team have been fighting back, lie by lie. Maybe it's all for the next run, but his friends tell me they would be doing it anyway, because he cannot bear leaving the record where it was.

In the immediate aftermath of the campaign, he was ready to blame this one or that one - those days are past. It's not about blame any more, it's about getting it right.

What Dick Nixon did between 1960 and 1968 is what John Kerry has been doing and will do in these four years. Unlike Gore, it isn't a show about him. It's about each congressman and woman who calls and asks him to come to their district and do a fund-raiser.

He comes. He spreads money around. He contributes to everyone.

He has a list of 3 million voter contacts, and they hear from him regularly. He is generous with time. He is easy to get to.

It's not like getting in an endless line to get into the Hillary campaign, or fighting half of Hollywood to get close to Gore. It's not like negotiating the intricacies of Clinton Inc., where you are expected to give endlessly and might someday get an invitation to lunch with a hundred others. If you want to have dinner with Kerry, you can have dinner with Kerry. Alone, or with one or two other people. You can spend real time.

He'll listen.

Maybe the arrogance is still there, but he isn't wearing it on his sleeve. He doesn't talk about all the votes he got. He knows that the people he had last time have to be re-recruited, one by one, and that's how he's doing it.

His vice presidential nominee, John Edwards, may well run - but so what?

No love lost between those two. What one does won't matter to the other, one way or the other. My guess is that he wishes he'd picked Dick Gephardt. Whether it would have mattered or not, who knows? Would Gephardt have been a better debater? Fought harder?

That's the past.

It won't stop Kerry from running against Edwards.

Or Gore.

Or Hillary.

#5  Is why the DemoLeft's harsh to onbscene anti-Bush rhetoric. They want Hated Fascist = Half/Good Communist Amerikkka to attack and conquer, and for America to be attacked and conquered/
defeated. Promoting American/Western-centric National and Global Socialism = PC working against same. The Clinton-led Dems wanna SPEND SPEND SPEND, Regulate Bureaucratize Socialize and Stratify, while still putting America under
"justified" anti-US, anti-Sovereign OWG, where "justified" > hyper-PC, neutralist minimalist info or not explaining anything at all to the voters and people of America. Its "self-obvious" where just becuz elected leaders wilfully didn't explain anything always means the voters' interpetation is wrong. AMERICA/AMERIKKA = NORTH KOREA = PC, MSM-verifed, locally-nationally sovereign, independent, and democratic but de facto ruled or controlled from Commie Asia.
CLINTONISM > THREE CO-EQUAL, PARALLEL, CO-AUTONOMOUS/INDEPENDENT, HORIZONTAL FEDERALIST BRANCHES OF GOVT. = SSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH, VERTICAL, CENTRALIST, ESCALATORY STALINIST-SOCIALIST, TOP-DOWN, LARGER = SUBSERVIENT/
SUBORDINATE LEVELS OF GOVT. Remember, many Lefty Bloggers are now openly equating Leftism, Liberalism, and the Demo Party as synonymous wid SOCIALISTS AND SOCIALISM, espec ABSOLUTIST CONSERVATIVE SOCIALISTS. "COMMUNIST/COMMUNISM/
TOTALITARIANISM" > coming but is presently NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME. THE NET AND ALL AMERICA > YEAR 2006 IS WHEN THE DADDY OR GRAMPS SAW THE FORMER DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND CLINTONIAN SOCIALIST AMERIKKKA BEGIN ITS EVOLUTION INTO THE CPUS AND CCUS/CCCA, THE AMERIKAN COMMIES ALLOWED TO FIGHT AND WAR FOR EMPIRE BUT NOT ALLOWED TO KEEP ITS EMPIRE NOR ITS OWN SOVEREIGN NATIONAL BRAND OF SOCIALISM-COMMUNISM.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
GAZA IS DARWIN CITY
You've heard of the Darwin Awards, right? They're awarded to idiots who kill themselves doing something astoundingly dumb, thereby contributing to human evolution by removing themselves from the gene pool.

Awardees are individuals, but I am nominating an entire inhabited region of the world: Palestinian Gaza. Gaza should, in fact, be re-named Darwin City. Consider this news bulletin from Gulf Daily News of Bahrain, dated May 27, 2006:

GAZA CITY: Four Palestinians were killed in northern Gaza yesterday as Israel fired dozens of artillery shells into the territory. Three men died and five other were wounded in a house when a family member brought in and accidentally set off an unexploded Israeli shell that landed near the area, Palestinian security sources said.

An investigation by the Jerusalem Post found out that a bunch of Palestinian 20-somethings took home an unexploded artillery shell, invited a bunch of friends over - apparently with the approval of their parents - and then tried to take it apart with everybody in a crowed room watching.

The shell exploded, killing three and wounding a dozen more. The Palestinian authorities tried to cover it up, but the hospital officials admitted the truth and the family verified it. There were even photos of the house in the article.

Darwin City.

Over two years ago (February 2004) I predicted The Coming Palestinian Civil War. I updated this last September with Credence in Gaza. The Palestinian Civil War was accelerated by the election of Hamas this January, which is why I wrote Celebrating Hamas.

Now Fatah and Hamas could be productively engaged in killing each other off, distracting them from slaughtering Israelis.

The violence between Hamas and Fatah has gotten so bad that the popular website Little Green Footballs carries a regular feature, "Palestinian Civil War Watch."

Thanks to the Palestinian Civil War (funny how our media doesn't celebrate this like it does civil war in Iraq), suicide bombings in Israel have dropped 90%.

And it's going to get worse (or better?) in Gaza, more Palestinians going after each others' throats. That's the price of maniacal hatred and rage. At some point, it turns in on itself.

Hatred and rage also make you stupid. Stupid enough for a Darwin Award. Thus expect to see Palestinians continue improving the human gene pool by removing themselves from it.

Olde Tyme Religion
New blogs and the Christianization of Africa
From Buscaraons, one of my favorite blogs...
On Friday, I was surfing the various blogs that I like to read and I came across a truly enlightening interview between al-Jazeera and Ahmed al Katani- Islamic missionary director. The interview was about the Christianization of Africa. The interview is a mix of arresting sociological insights, abysmal ingorance of the current state of inter-Christian relations and panicky paranoia.

Al Katani makes an arresting sociological insight that you need to create a believer before you build a mosque. It certainly tracks with Michael Aquilina's assessment of Rodney Stark's book on the rise of Christanity

I'll momentarily diagress and praise Michael's blog on the early Church father. He makes patristics come alive and reading his posts underscrores how relevenat they still are as this interview demonstrates

So how come Islam appears to have trouble creating worshippers? After many circumlocutions, he partially answers the question: the rich Arab benefactors are more interested in mosque construction than creating a community of believers. Further, Al Katani complains that 'Arab' problems are imported into Africa which are completely irrelevant to the locale. Like the controversy of growing beards as a sign of piety. This indifference to establish a community of believers is very curious in light of the obligation to provide charity to the poor. One of the 5 pillars of Islam. By contrast, Christians ereate a network of social services: from hospitals to orphanges to coops.

Al Katami is a proported Islamic expert on Christianization; yet he demonstrates such absymal ignorance on the current state of inter-Christian relations. For an expert on the subject, he's obviously never bothered to learn even a modicum of Christanity. For example, he absurdly claims that Orthodox, Catholics and Protestanats don't intermarry? Really? Well that assertion will cause Bent to fall off her chair laughing. She's a Copt who's married to a Latin (rite) Catholic and their daughter is being brought up with a love and knowledge of saints from both Churches. If al Katami were a comptent expert, he'd've informed his listeners that the Catholic canon law both east and west have provisions for couples from different Christian demominations on the rules to marry.

More laughably, he's mostly likely never bothered to inform himself of, say the 1993 Christological statement between the Chaledean Catholic and the Assyrian churches (PDF document) which clears up many of the controversies that originated with the Nestorian controversy or the Evangelicals and Catholics together statement. So while he's quite legimate with his reaction over the divisions in the body of Christ, Christian demoninations taken great steps to reconcilate in varying degrees.

Despite his sense of scandal and the gloating over how blindingly simple Islamic doctrine is in comparasion Christanity's 'contradictions' and complexity, al Katani gripes that still 6 million African Moslems convert to Christanity. Well simply that's Islam's most significant flaw isn't it? If Islamic doctrine is indeed so blindingly easy to grasp and so obvious to a resonable person (a) why do non-Arab Moslems still get it wrong? (b) Why does Islam prohibit its adherents from leaving it under penalty of death? (c) Why do 6 million African Moslems still convert to Christanity after comparaing it to Islam? Michael Barbar's blog on the development of Christian doctrine and biblical studies provides an answer. First, the Church's struggles with the seemingly contraditory and complex issues about the Incarnation, Resurrection, sin, death and the like caused the apostles, church fathers, saints, apologists and theologians to work through signifigance of each issue with the help of both God's grace and human intellect. Second, the ferocious 3 centuries of persecutions by the Roman empire as well as the polemics by non-Christians inspired the Christian apologists to develop sophisticated apologetics from philosophy to demonstrate Christanity's reasonablenes. Michael's posts on the development of Christian doctrine and the establishment of the bible highlight the richness of Christian thought over 2 millenia.

Consequently, Islamic apologtiecs has always been shallow in comparasion because both Islamic religious doctrine is oversimplified so no need to struggle with the signifigance of each element and the absence of persecution never compelled Moslems to grapple with extra-relgious arguments to persuade non-Moslems of Islam's reasonability. There was always the sword, the knife, Omar's pact and dimmitude to enforce belief.

Finally, there's panicky paranoia that veers into bizarrelandia. Al Katani appallingly slanders West over a scurillous obsession to empty Africa of its inhabitants. At the same time there's a lot of involuntary humour: that the World Council of Churches has devious plan to Christianize Moslem countries. That's parody. No serious Christian takes that entity with any seriousness. In fact, one of the Orthodox churches resigned its membership precisely because the World Council has compromised the Gospel to please the prejudices of the age.

Nevertheless, there's no mistaking of the panic during the interview. Al Katani is freaking out that Christianization of Africa is relentless and unstoppable. Worse is that he can't resolve the dilemma precisely for the reasons that I analyzed earlier: Islam can't articulate its reasonability and the unjustifiable ignorance of Islamic experts on Christanity about even its most basic beliefs and history. Nonetheless, Christians needn't gloat as the their divisions between denominations is a grevious scandal and causes unjustified confusion about the Gospel.

#1  The implication here is that any true "Expert" on Christianity would inevitably become a true believer.

Islam and ignorance preserve each other. Hence there is no greater sin than apostacy.
Posted by: john || 06/04/2006 7:18 Comments || Top||

#2  He sees big differences between different Christian denominations? This is laughable - if this is Islams best guy in Christianity, they are doomed.

To begin with, UNlike the Shia and the Sunni, we dont behead or car-bomb each other. Even the worst days of N. Ireland, it was still about political power and England's usurpation of part of Ireland.

Unlike Islam, a Christian's piety is related to the strength of thier faith, their personal relationship to God, and how that shows trhough in the way they live their life. Its one's "life in God", not one's "length of beard".

Thre are many other points as well.

#3  The best they have is not verty good. James Arlandson shows that Islam will not fare very well when it finally meets the Enlightenment.

There, that's more accurate.
