Ohio AG Refuses to Resign; Faces Impeachment
The political battle over whether state Attorney General Marc Dann should leave office has taken on the feel of a standoff. Dann, 46, refuses to surrender to demands by an army of his own Democratic leaders that he step aside following an admitted affair and a sexual harassment scandal at his office.

Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland said Monday that Dann's refusal to submit to the pressure - including a threat by the Ohio Democratic Party to revoke its endorsement - means Democrats will move forward to impeach him. Republican House Speaker Jon Husted said that his chamber, which takes the first step in any impeachment, was already reviewing the process.

"I think it's important for Democrats to send a very clear message that we will clean our own house," Strickland said. Democrats' calls for Dann to resign were applauded by Republicans, adding a new twist to Strickland's reputation for bipartisan cooperation.

Dann is the third high-ranking Democratic official around the country to be marred by sexual scandal in recent months.

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned abruptly in March after revelations that he had been a customer of a high-end prostitution service. But Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick continues to hold office despite being charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice for accusations that he tried to hide a long-term romantic relationship with his former chief of staff.

In Dann's native Mahoning Valley, people were divided, though. The Vindicator of Youngstown is the only major newspaper in the state that hasn't called for Dann to resign.

Carlotta Sparks Cooper, 44, taking a walk in Youngstown while baby-sitting two grandchildren, said she voted for Dann and hopes he doesn't resign. "I feel everybody deserves a second chance," she said. "I believe in the man. I voted for the man. If he did something wrong, give him a chance to rectify it and then take it from there."

#1  A couple of update-y things:

The Akron Leakin' Urinal Beacon-Journal house editorial today reversed itself and called for Dann to serve out his term because he's doing such a great job (apart from the sex scandal, misuse of state funds, and a top aide boasting of his Mafia ties, that is).

Ten years ago, Governor Strickland, then a mere Congresscritter, voted against all four articles of impeachment brought against Bill Clinton. If I were Marc Dann, I'd be a lowlife scum-sucking ratweasel wondering why he wouldn't stick up for me the way he stuck up for Clinton.

#2  It's simple Mike. It's about power. Keeping Billy Boy in meant the Donks retained their power, for what is was. Getting Dann'O to resign keeps the power too, by distancing themselves from the wretch.

#3  "I think it's important for Democrats to send a very clear message that we will clean our own house,"

Problem here is we DO know what Democrats mean by the phrase "Clean House"
It means "Cover up and destroy all evidence"
It means "Publish as many lies, disinformation and half-truths as needed".
It means "Dammit he got caught, Buy judges, Attorney Generals and Courts as needed"
It means "Find out who told, and destroy them"

Yes we're well aware exactly what they mean.

Jude Loses $54 M Suit for Pants, Now Sues to be a Judge Again
A former judge who lost a $54 million lawsuit against a dry cleaners over a missing pair of pants is suing to get his job back and at least $1 million in damages.
At least he hasn't played the race card yet.
In a response to a Freedom of Information Act request from The Associated Press, the city's general counsel wrote that Pearson's term as an administrative law judge expired in May 2007, and the D.C. Commission on Selection and Tenure of Administrative Law Judges voted not to reappoint him. The panel reached its decision based on Pearson's work and temperament as a judge and the $54 million lawsuit. Pearson had requested to be appointed for a 10-year term.

The $54 million pants suit saga began when Pearson filed a civil suit for losing a pair of pants and using signs that Pearson claimed were deceptive. Initially, Pearson calculated his losses at $67 million but lowered his request to $54 million.
Those were his favorite pair of pants; he suffered great emotional distress!
In June 2007, Judge Judith Bartnoff ruled that the Chungs did not violate the consumer protection law by failing to live up to Pearson's expectations of the "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign once displayed in the store. The Chungs sold the business because of the revenue losses and emotional toll the family suffered as a result of the lawsuit.

#7  Abolish the judicial office! Ridiculous? In early English Common Law, judges were prohibited from making findings of fact; those were left to jurors. Findings of innocence or guilt were based on applying law to juror fact. In the computer age we no longer need judges to do that; case issues are now retrievable by data search and Law Reports routinely record those issues for future reference. In "The Brethren," Bob Woodward reported that few SCOTUS judgments are written by judges. In fact, law firms reported that youthful former Law Clerks had submitted resumes in which they claimed authorship to key SCOTUS findings. High court judges were forced to admit same. While the rest of us wait for retirement on a small pension, SCOTUS parasites retire at full salary. And that often means a handoutof millions.

2 injured in explosion of homemade bomb
A few days old but it needs to be noted here.
CLINTON, N.C. — Two men were arrested Wednesday after their homemade bomb exploded prematurely, injuring both, authorities said.

Acting on an anonymous tip, Sampson County deputies found a Chevrolet minivan outside Sampson Regional Medical Center with a side window blown out and blast marks on the outside of a door, authorities said. Inside the hospital emergency room, Martin Bryant Boyette and Julio Frentez Morales were receiving treatment for injuries from a bomb blast, authorities said. An investigation determined that the pair had made several bombs at Boyette's house, where both lived, and Morales tried to throw one out the window of the minivan on U.S. Highway 701 as they drove past Hobbton Schools, authorities said.

The bomb went off in Morales' hand, seriously injuring him, and a piece of shrapnel hit Boyette in the back of the head, authorities said.
Good.
"It's scary to think that these individuals were going to throw an explosive device out of a vehicle in front of a school," Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton said in a statement. "What were they thinking? What possible thrill could be worth potentially injuring an innocent person, especially a child?"
At best, they weren't thinking at all. At worst, they were thinking about the revolution ...
The State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called in to assist with the case. ATF agents searched the minivan and determined no other bombs were inside, authorities said. A pipe bomb was found during a search of the house, and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad responded to disarm it, authorities said.

Boyette was being held in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $35,000 bond, while Morales had been released on bond. The owner of the minivan, who also lived at the Keener Road house, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia after deputies found 2 grams of methamphetamine while interviewing her during their investigation of the bomb explosion. She was being held in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $200,000 bond.

The ATF is investigating the case for possible federal charges, authorities said.
Each of these mooks needs a long, long prison sentence, no parole, no early release. Let mook #1 use a styrofoam hook for a hand.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Insidious Canadian world domination plot revealed, eh?
James Taranto, "Best of the Web" @ the Wall Street Journal

The United States and Canada share the longest unprotected border in the world, and Totonto's Globe and Mail has a story illustrating why that is so dangerous:

More than 100 Canadian women with high-risk pregnancies have been sent to United States hospitals over the past year--in what a doctors' group attributes to the lack of a national birthing plan. . . .

Aw, look at the cute little Canadian babies! It's all very sweet and innocuous, right?

Don't believe it. Read between the lines, and you realize this is a sinister Canadian plot to take over America. Canada's military is no match for ours, so the crafty Canucks are using infancy instead of infantry to carry out their imperial designs.

Think about it. Canadian officials send women across the border, smuggling in "anchor babies" cleverly disguised as clumps of tissue. The women give birth inside the U.S., which means their Canadian offspring are entitled to U.S. citizenship. As these "children" grow and mature, they receive instructions from their masters in Ottawa about how to undermine American culture.

Before you know it, your kids are stuffing themselves with litres of back bacon, downing kilogram after kilogram of Crown Royal and Labatt Blue, and belting out "God Save the Queen" as they watch hockey on TV.

It's all so horrible to contemplate, but it can be stopped. All we need to do is make America as inhospitable as Canada for expectant Canadian mothers. Hillary Clinton has the right idea: The U.S. needs socialized medicine.

#1  The Canadian national anthem is "O Canada". Those of us who grew up on the south side of the border can sing at least the first bit, and some of us still vote Republican, so clearly watching the Canadiens on the ice isn't so corrupting as all that. ;-)

#2  So the Canadian healthcare system just exports the tough cases to the US. Well if the US adopted such a plan where would we send them? Perhaps someone should ask our Democrat friends.

McGreevey Divorce Trial Underway Tuesday
After a separation lasting more than three years now sparked by former Gov. James McGreevey's admission on national television that he was a gay American, he and his estranged wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, arrived for divorce proceedings Tuesday morning. "It's a beautiful day," McGreevey said as he entered alone through the back entrance of the courthouse Tuesday morning.
"Won't you be my neighbor?"
Matos McGreevey had no comment when she arrived with her lawyer through the front courthouse entrance.
"[Grumble!]"
The first order of business are closed door proceedings concerning their 6-year-old daughter. McGreevey is seeking equal custody.
"She needs me, 'cuz I understand her feminine side!"
Matos McGreevey wants $600,000 as compensation for time she would have spent in the governor's office had her husband not resigned in disgrace. She claims she was not aware of his homosexuality. "I did what I did because I thought it was the right thing to do. When I took my vows, I said it for better or worse," Matos McGreevey said.
McGreevey, 50, who is now living with a male partner and studying to be an Episcopal priest.
"And believe me, this is worse."
The former governor claims she knew of his sexual orientation during their marriage, and even participated in three-way sexual encounters with his former driver, Teddy Pederson.
"And don't forget the German shepherd! And the creamed corn!"
Pederson's testimony could prove crucial, if it ever makes it to court. Matos McGreevey subpoenaed him and denies the allegations. Her lawyer is working to have the testimony thrown out.
"I object, yer honor! There wudn't no witnesses and the whole thing is tacky!"
"Sustained!"
McGreevey, 50, who is now living with a male partner and studying to be an Episcopal priest, wants joint physical and legal custody of their daughter. He currently has the child one night a week and every other weekend. Child support payments in the McGreevey case will depend on custody arrangements, lawyers have said.

"The harsh content of old photographs"
American Digest

. . . I like the harsh content of old photographs. There's often a truth to them that all the careful curating of our soppy era cannot obfuscate. Things are as they are, not as some wish they might have been. Lovers stare without smiles. The hands charred by hard work and harsh soil are seen sharp. The child in the coffin is dead. What you see is what they had. What you see is what we've lost.

I was alone in the room, except for the very old man in the walker. He was stopped along the wall on the left looking searchingly at a large photograph of a street scene. He glanced up and gave me a long look as if to say, "What the hell are you doing in my museum?" Then he seemed to think better of it and beckoned me over. . . .

Apropos of nothing except that it's a touching story. Read it and be moved.

#1  There is always nostalgia for what was once treasured, or should have been treasured, that is now lost.

I once knew an elderly lady who was an ethnomusicologist. She had traveled the world several times and had collected relics from dozens of peoples who are now extinct. Perhaps the only trace that they ever existed was an instrument or reel to reel tape of the music they played.

Though the university saved her collection, it just packed it in boxes and forgot about it.

Except for one exceptionally heavy set of gongs, a gift from an Asian prince. Turned out they were solid gold. That got their attention. Though after a quick check of everything else made of metal, the rest of the stuff went into boxes.

Eventually it will either decay to dust, or just be thrown away.

#3  In English:

THE STORY OF MALACHY

What can be said?
There was this youth,
a young man called Malachy,
we say, that’s how it was.

Well, one day
this young man
saying, “I’ll go to Huliland”,
got everything ready.

This youth, himself,
having said , “I’ll go to Huliland,”
learnt the best approaches to preaching.

He learnt how to speak gently,
and how to understand spoken Huli.
He learnt how to patrol through the bush.
I’m off to Huliland, he said, and off he went, we say, that’s how it was.

Stopping first at Gubari,
he went on to Bajaga
we say, that’s how it was.

While he was thus travelling,
he criss-crossed Gambe boundaries;
he travelled all around;
we say, that’s how it was.

The people said,
Malachy is a wonderful man,
full of wisdom,
utterly truthful,
that’s how he tells it,
we say that’s how it was.

Ah yes,
when he did such great things,
his superior saw what was going on,
and said, ‘Let’s send him to Buruani’,
we say, that’s how it was.

Malagi himself
did many great things (in Buruani);
he did a lot of work,
toiling for others, not for himself:
he worked unceasingly,
we say, that’s how it was.

Because of this, we Huli people thank
the Great Lord God,
giving praise,
praising Malachy continously,
we say, that’s how it was..

And now Malachy has gone on ahead,
and is filled with everlasting joy,
we say, that’s how it was.

They said that the ghost has been having sexual intercourse with them. One woman said that these incidents started in Kent and continued when she moved here. The other woman said that this just started now.
