Prominent eastern tribesman says Haftar is after ruling Libya via Tripoli
[Libya Observer] One of the prominent elders of Awaqir tribe in eastern Libya, Abdelhamid al-Kizza, who was formerly a deputy head of the "Supreme Council of Libyan Cities and Tribes," has accused Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
of going after ruling Libya through war and via the capital, Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Speaking on Libya al-Ahrar TV Channel, al-Kizza indicated that Haftar's prime aim is to reach Tripoli and then rule the country as he rejects voting and elections, which he said are also rejected by so many figures besides Haftar.

"Haftar uses fighting terrorism and militias as a pretext to reach his goals, but he wants to carry on with the war as it is his only means to be the ruler of Libya." He explained.

"If his attempts failed, Haftar will keep destabilizing Libya." al-Kizza remarked.

The prominent Awaqir primitive is living nowadays in Cairo, which could be a place away from Haftar's grip, as he - unlike other easterners - isn't afraid to speak out against Haftar and his forces.

On the other hand, media outlets loyal to Haftar has been lately describing al-Kizza as a member of Moslem Brüderbund Group, however; AL-Kizza denied it and said those allegations were responses to his bitter criticism of Haftar and his militias.

Egyptian court issues preliminary death sentences to 8 people for Sisi assassination attempt
[AlAhram] An Egyptian military court has issued preliminary death sentences for eight people convicted of attempting to assassinate President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef in 2014.

The court has referred the sentences to the country’s grand mufti for his non-binding opinion, as required by Egyptian law,

The court designated a session on 6 March to pronounce the preliminary verdicts for all 292 defendants in the case.

The defendants were accused of assassinating three judges in North Sinai in May 2016, as well as attacking the residence of judges supervising Egypt's parliamentary elections inside a North Sinai hotel, killing two other judges, two coppers and a citizen.

The defendants were also accused of staging a multi-pronged attack on the headquarters of the Army Battalion 101 Headquarters in Arish in North Sinai, which killed 30 soldiers and officers in January 2015.

In November 2016, the state security prosecution referred 292 alleged members of ISIS terrorist group to a military court on charges of plotting to assassinate El-Sisi and launch terrorist attacks in the country.

According to investigations carried out by the state security prosecution, the defendants plotted liquidation attempts against the president, with the first in 2014 as he performed a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, MENA reported.

The attempt, which also targeted the then-Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Nayef, involved members from terrorist cells in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The prosecution did not specify how the plot was foiled.

The suspects were also responsible for carrying out a number of high-profile attacks in North and South Sinai.

The Grand Turk
Turkish Inflation Resumes Rise in January
[AnNahar] Ottoman Turkish inflation slightly surged 1.06 percent in January from December after two months of slowdown, reaching an annual rate of 20.35 percent, driven by higher food prices, official statistics showed Monday.

The highest monthly increase was recorded in food, at 6.43 percent, according to the Ottoman Turkish statistics office (TUIK).

In recent months, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
has been facing a sharp surge in its inflation rate, which hit a 15-year high in October at more than 25 percent.

The central bank revised down its inflation forecast last week.

It said 12-month inflation was likely to be 14.6 percent at the end of 2019, down from the 15.2 percent estimate given in October.

The inflation forecast for 2020 also was cut to 8.2 percent from 9.3 percent and the central bank said it hopes price rises will stabilise at around five percent in the medium term.

Jason Tuvey, senior emerging markets economist at London-based Capital Economics, said in a note that inflation was expected to ease over the coming months.

"Looking ahead, the jump in food inflation should prove temporary and we expect inflation to ease over the next few months," he said.

But he noted the central bank's latest inflation report struck a relatively more hawkish tone than expected.

"As a result, we think that the MPC (monetary policy committee) is now likely to hold off from lowering interest rates until the middle of the year when inflation is likely to fall sharply," he said.

The Ottoman Turkish lira lost nearly 30 percent of its value against the dollar in 2018, against the backdrop of diplomatic tensions with the United States which exacerbated last August.

After the currency crisis, the central bank hiked interest rates by more than 6 percentage points to 24 percent.

But President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
opposes high interest rates and there have been concerns over the bank's independence.

US lawmaker seeks asylum for Aasia
[DAWN] A US politician has introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to grant asylum to Aasia Bibi, arguing that she should be allowed to be settled in the United States because she has been allegedly persecuted for being a Christian.

Aasia Bibi was incarcerated

in 2009 for allegedly using blasphemous words during a quarrel with other women of her village in Nankana.

"The recent decision by Pakistain’s top court to overturn Aasia’s death sentence and free her from jail is obviously welcome news," observed Congressman Ken Calvert, a Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Republican.

On Tuesday, a three-member Supreme Court bench threw out a petition seeking a review of its earlier decision to acquit 47-year-old Aasia Bibi. She was falsely accused of committing blasphemy, the court concluded. Mr Calvert said he had decided to move the resolution after receiving several letters from his constituents expressing their desire to move Aasia Bibi to a safe place.

ATC extends Khadim Rizvi, TLP leaders' judicial remand until Feb 8
[DAWN] Police on Monday nabbed
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
dozens of Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistain (TLP) workers after they tried to block an armoured vehicle carrying the party chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who was produced by the law enforcement agencies before an anti-terrorism court (ATC).

Several workers had gathered outside an ATC in Lahore where Rizvi had been brought for the hearing of a case registered against him and five other party leaders ‐ who were also produced before the court today ‐ for damaging property and vandalism during violent protests that the TLP held following a Supreme Court verdict that acquitted Aasia Bibi in a blasphemy case last year.

The TLP leaders, including Afzal Qadri, Pir Ejaz Ashrafi, Farooqul Hasan, Shafqat Jamil and Waheed Noor, appeared amid heavy security before ATC admin judge Sheikh Sajjad today after the expiration of their 14-day judicial remand. The court extended their judicial remand until Feb 8.

After the hearing was over, TLP workers tried to block an armoured vehicle carrying Rizvi away from the ATC, leading the police to launch a crackdown and arrest multiple workers.

Iraq
Iraqi president approves 2019 budget law
Baghdad (IraqiNEws.com) ‐ Iraqi President Barham Salih on Monday ratified the 2019 budget, which is considered one of the largest ever in the oil-rich country.

In a post-signing statement, Salih stressed the need to "provide basic services for citizens and to start a new phase of construction and reconstruction in the country."

He further praised efforts made by the government and parliament to finalize the country’s budget.

The $111.8-billion budget witnessed a nearly 45 percent increase compared to the previous year, featuring the highest deficit and second-highest spending volume in Iraq’s history since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

"The amount of waste and wrongly allocated money is outrageous," Abbas Kadhim, director of the Atlantic Council’s Iraq Initiative, told CNBC on Tuesday. "Despite being a very large spending plan, Iraq’s new budget still suffers from the same problems. Too much of the budget goes to salaries... In the meantime, necessary spending on new infrastructure and reconstruction is not adequate."

Nearly half of the budget ‐ $52 billion ‐ will go to public sector salaries, pensions, and social security for babus babus government employees, a 15 percent spike from 2018. $27.8 billion will go to investments, with the deficit set to more than double to $23.1 billion, as reported by AFP.

Iraq butthurt by Pres. Trump's idea to watch Iran from US base
Gratitude, who needs it ?
[BBC] Iraq's President Barham Saleh has rebuked Donald Trump over his comments that he wanted to maintain a US military presence there to watch Iran.

Mr Trump told CBS on Sunday he intended to keep an "incredible" base being used by US troops to combat the jihadist group Islamic State "because I want to be looking a little bit at Iran".

Mr Saleh said on Monday that the US had not asked Iraq's permission to do so.

It should stick to fighting terrorism and not pursue other agendas, he added.

There are an 5,000 estimated US military personnel in Iraq authorised to train, advise and assist Iraqi security forces in their fight against IS, which has not fully controlled any territory in the country for more than a year.

Olde Tyme Religion
Gargash: Pope visit overcomes the challenge posed by extremism in all religions
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Pope Francis’ historic visit to Abu Dhabi is a significant step toward breaking the barriers of extremism and is in line with the country’s message of promoting co-existence and tolerance, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Monday.

"There is no doubt that the visit is historic. It is his first visit to the Arabian Peninsula. It particularly overcomes the challenge posed by extremism in all religions, not just in a specific one," Gargash told Al Arabiya.

The head of Catholic Church and the sovereign of the Vatican, was accorded a state welcome to the UAE at a grand ceremony organized at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi on Monday. The Pope’s visit coincides with the Year of Tolerance being marked by the UAE in 2019.

The pope’s three-day visit, which began on Sunday, has also brought Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar al-Sharif to the country. Gargash called this an important event in the path of promoting interfaith dialogue.

"The presence of someone like Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar in one place is significant in sending out the message of interfaith dialogue, which the UAE is eager to promote. This also marks breaking of the scourge of extremism during the past few decades," Gargash said.

"In order to compete on a global level, every country has to break the barriers of extremism, which only divides us instead of uniting," he said. Later on Monday, al-Tayyeb is scheduled to take part in the International Conference for Human Fraternity alongside Pope Francis.

The conference brings together 700 multi-faith representatives from around the world. They will visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque together and the Pontiff and will also meet the Moslem Council of Elders.

On Tuesday, Pope Francis will hold a Holy Mass at the Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi, which is expected to be attended by more than 135,000 people.

Al-Azhar Grand Imam El-Tayyeb to Mideast Christian communities: 'You are part of this nation. You are not minorities'
Os this a case of public words, private meaning, of which PLO head Yasser Arafat was a master, or is this really what Egypt is working toward?
[AlAhram] Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayyeb, the grand imam of Egypt's al-Azhar, the world's leading Moslem Sunni institution, called on Monday on Moslems in the Middle East to "embrace" local Christian communities.

El-Tayyeb's comments came in a televised speech in Abu Dhabi during a ceremony at the Human Fraternity Meeting, which is being organized by the Emirates.

The meeting is attended by the Vaticn's Pope Francis, who is on his first ever visit to the Arabian Peninsule, the birthplace of Islam.

The Pontiff had arrived in Abu-Dhabi on Sunday night on a three-day trip to promote interfaith dialogue and visit the Catholic peripheries.

El-Tayyeb flew on Sunday to Abu-Dhabi to meet with Pope Francis and attend the event.

The grand imam, who stressed in his speech 'that religion must never be used to justify violence,' and the pope signed a document that al-Azhar and the Vatican will work together to fight extremism.

Addressing communities of the Christian faith, El-Tayyeb stressed "You are part of this nation... You are not minorities."

He also called on Moslems in the west to integrate in their host nations and respect local laws.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran's Revolutionaries Have Mixed Feelings, 40 Years Later
[AnNahar] Forty years after he defected from the shah's Imperial Guard to join the Islamic Revolution, Mohammad Reza Tajik, like many Iranians from that time, looks back wistfully at the youthful excitement they felt and the losses they suffered since then.

Working in his woodshop in Tehran, he recounted the deaths of his brother in Iran's 1980s war with Iraq and of a friend last year in Syria's long civil war in which Iran is involved.

"No, we did not achieve what we wanted," the 60-year-old former soldier said, his shop warmed in the fierce Tehran winter by a simple wood-fired stove. "Things have changed and revolutionary values have worn out. Today, unfortunately, we still suffer from discrimination, favoritism, corruption and lying, even more than that time."

Geagea-led party to block normalization with Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Minister of Parliament for Lebanese Forces
A Christian political party founded by Bashir Gemayel, who was then bumped off when he was elected president of Leb...
Party Wehbe Qatisha stated on Monday that his political party would do everything in their power to block any attempts of normalization with Syria.

"If the state policy includes a recognition of the Syrian regime, the Lebanese Forces will disapprove and will express reservation, because the status of the Syrian state is still undetermined, neither by Russia, nor Iran, nor The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
," Qatisha told a TV interview.

"If they want to make this issue a cause, we will be on the lookout," he said.

Accordingly, the politician highlighted the necessity of the dissociation policy, stressing that this principle must constitute Leb’s permanent strategy regarding inter-Arab conflicts.

Led by Samir Geagea

Hezbollah responds to Netanyahu threats: ‘we are ready for war’
[ALMASDARNEWS] Hezbollah does not believe Israel is capable of starting a conflict with Leb, but considers itself "ready" to respond if they do so, the group’s deputy leader, Sheikh Naim Qassem
... the Grand Vizier of the Hezbullies...
, said in an interview with Lebanese television on Sunday, Press TV has reported.

"I don’t think Israel is ready to start a conflict with Leb now because the situation is complicated and Israel is not interested in war," Qassem said. "But if it wants to launch a war, we are ready," the official warned.

Responding to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s claim that the newly formed Lebanese government was "controlled" by Hezbollah, Qassem said this wasn’t the case."These allegations are not important. Hezbollah considers itself part of a national unity government in Leb," he said.

Qassem pointed out that the group comprised "only 10 per cent" of the government, with just three of the new government’s thirty-one ministers being Hezbollah members or affiliates.

Earlier, Netanyahu reiterated his longstanding view that Hezbollah is an Iranian proxy, and vowed to send a "very powerful message, just as we stop the terror tunnels coming into Israel: We will stop all the aggression, from Leb or from Syria or from Iran itself."

Leb formed a new government on Thursday, following nine months of deadlock after elections last May. Long delays in cabinet formation are common in Lebanese politics due to the country’s political system, which allocates power on the basis of sectarian affiliation.

Together with Israel, the United States voiced concerns over Hezbollah’s participation in the new government, including its control of the health ministry, which enjoys the country’s largest budget.

Qassem emphasised that Hezbollah’s control over the health portfolio will not in any way alter the system’s functioning, with new minister Hezbollah affiliate Dr. Jamil Jabak listing his priorities as improving state hospitals and lowering prescription drug prices.
Already tense relations between Israel and Leb escalated further late last year after the Israeli military launched an operation on the border to destroy what Tel Aviv described as Hezbollah’s "terror tunnels."

Erdogan says Turkey has maintained contacts with Damascus
How noble of him.
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
has maintained low-level contact with the Syrian government, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday, even though Ankara has supported rebels who fought for years to topple Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
Erdogan has described Assad as a terrorist and said several times during Syria’s eight-year conflict that the Syrian leader must go. But with support from Russia and Iran, Assad has recaptured large parts of Syria from rebel fighters, driving them from most of their former strongholds.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in December Turkey and other countries would consider working with Assad if he won a democratic election, and last month said Ankara was in indirect contact with Damascus via Russia and Iran.

Erdogan suggested on Sunday that Turkey also had direct contacts with the Syrian government.

Terror Networks
BDS groups slammed for terror ties active on US campuses
[Ynet] Pro-Paleostinian rights groups Samidoun and Addameer have been hosted on US campuses for years, with what Israel says is their open support for terror groups and their sizeable terrorist membership going almost entirely undetected by US Education Department.

Paleostinian rights and boycott groups, which Israel accused on Sunday of having direct links to terror organizations and convicted terrorists, have been operating freely on US college campuses and have been influencing American students since at least 2016.

A report by the Ministry of Strategic Affairs published on Sunday, entitled "Terrorists in Suits" and dealing with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement, alleges that numerous self-proclaimed rights groups have long-standing ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine (PFLP) and Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,, both US-designated terror organizations.

These ties have received little or no scrutiny from US authorities or the education system, enabling groups mentioned in the report, such as Samidoun and Addameer, to operate unchecked on college US campuses.

In 2016, for example, Samidoun, also known as Samidoun-Paleostinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, co-hosted an event at New York University titled "New York reception welcomes prisoner advocacy leaders from Paleostine."

Earlier the same year, the organization co-hosted an event titled "Repression & Resistance: Paleostinians in Political Detention" at John Jay College in Manhattan.

In 2017, Samidoun again co-hosted an event at UCLA’s School of Public Affairs titled "A Talk on Paleostinian Prisoners Day."

In addition to holding events on campuses, Samidoun regularly co-hosts events and co-sponsors petitions with multiple pro-Paleostinian student groups.

The events were able to proceed despite the group’s open support for snuffies and terror organizations, much of which can be found on social media.

In 2015, for example, Joe Catron, Samidoun’s US Coordinator, sent Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah a public Twitter message: "Nasrallah my friend, attack, attack Tel Aviv," the report says.

"A Samidoun activist was trained by Hezbollah in Leb as well as delivered funds he received in Syria and Leb to PFLP activists in Belgium," it added.

The evidence presented in the report raises the question of whether designated terror organizations are gaining a strong foothold inside colleges by using movements campaigning under the banner of human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
as a tool for promoting their own agenda.

Other examples of rights groups given unfettered access to US campuses include Addameer, whose official raison d'être is to advocate for Paleostinian prisoners.

According to the Israeli ministry’s report, "Addameer was founded by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine, many of whom were convicted of terrorist activity, with the mission to support and advocate on behalf of Paleostinian prisoners."

In August 2018, Barnard College in New York hosted Addameer, a Ramallah-based movement. The organization’s director, Shahar Francis, also travels to the US to speak on various US campuses despite Addameer’s connections to US-designated terror groups.

"The NGO, which promotes the BDS campaign against the State of Israel, continues to maintain significant ties with the PFLP," the report noted about Addameer.

"These ties include members of the NGO who are simultaneously members of the PFLP, legal representation of PFLP members charged with terrorism offenses (some of whom also hold positions in the NGO), and joint campaigns with the PFLP," it continued.

In recent years, Jewish groups have voiced concerns overwhat they say is growing and prevailing anti-Israel sentiment on college campuses. The recent findings shed light on the possible sources of the increasing anti-Israel position among students.

#1  A couple of years ago some of these BDS types were outed by a Jewish group. That was funny.

#2  what Israel says is their open support for terror groups and their sizeable terrorist membership going almost entirely undetected by US Education Department.

You mean US Education Department doesn't subsidize these groups?
