A little context would be nice. Where is this? Iraq? Palestine? Who is the shooter? Why is he sitting out in the middle of the street with no cover? I hate contextless stuff like this. It's no wonder the video comes from a TV station, they're notorious for only showing fragments of the whole story.

I looked hard to see if you could identify the shooter but it appears to have come from off to the left, up the street and off screen. Without more, it's hard to say who shot him. And what language is being spoken? I noticed too that this guy has no shoes. Talk about well equipped. Course he's luckier than that PA vermin that took his AK up against the Merkava.

Though plans are kept under wraps, experts say the new Hindenburg II, as it is already being dubbed in the German press, will loosely resemble its ill-fated predecessor - except for the elongated two-level gondola that would stretch 70 metres along the bottom of the giant airship. The German press has already dubbed the new airship the Hindenburg II.
The new dirigible, which will be designated the HGZ 129 M in memory of the original Hindenburg (called the LZ 129), will also be as large as its infamous sister ship, which exploded on landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on 6 May 1937.
A team of 150 engineers, technicians and aeronautical experts has been working behind closed doors on the Hindenburg II project since 1998, according to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper. A feasibility study released in March stated that the project is viable, the Berlin newspaper said. The new ship would use a combination of helium and hydrogen, in 17 separate gas cells, to give it enough lifting power to accommodate hundreds of passengers or up to 80 tons of cargo. The only reason this was adopted in the first place was due to the fact that men would go off to war and many would not come back. In effect reducing the rate of women to men to approx. 3-1. In order to help provide for the women who were w/out a man and w/ children, the brother or friend would take on a second wife.This was in like 600 A.D and after. Now it's just a relic that some idiots use. Who wouldnt want a harem of nice young girlies anyway:P

"We are treating this as a single one-off incident and at this stage we are pursuing a specific line of inquiry." Rabbi Schiff, executive director of Aish UK - a Jewish educational charity, said: "Seeing Scrolls of the Law torn and strewn on the floor of my own synagogue in London was devastating." The synagogue which is inside the building was not affected by the fire, the spokesman for the centre said.

I anticipate you on BBC radio 4 tomorrow decrying this shamefal act of Anti Semitism and demanding protection for all UK Jewish religious sites and making veiled therats about the security of the entire population if these acts continue. Minds which are kept that "open" probably had their brains fall out some time ago. The synagogue's heart and soul are their scrolls. A hate crime is pretty much the only possible explanation for their desecration.
Howard UK, from your comments, I take it that Schiff has come out in vigourous defense of Muslims like Abu Hamza. Should he neglect to place equal emphasis on the investigation of this obvious hate crime it will be a damning indictment of preferentialism on his part.

My comment there was that a friend of mine lives in Cuba about 10 months of the year and is due back here in about three weeks - I'll be able to ask him some more about this then, but based on our conversations last year, there's a possibility that El Commandante is planning another Mariel...in october.

We should park the fleet just outside of Cuban waters and announce any Cuban that makes it to a US ship will be granted citizenship. Its possible the outflow could cause some collapse, just as the lack of border controls in eastern Europe contributed to the fall. It certainly would be embarrassing to the Castro apologists.

Now, Ofcom has puffed itself up to chastise Gibson who, predictably, reacted by using one of his opinion segments to tell Ofcom to stuff it. He was much too polite. Typically, networks allow stations to pick the shows they want, and both sides share the advertising revenue. Air America got its way in smaller markets. In big cities, Air America agreed to pay for airtime, which ultimately cost more than it could afford. "When you believe youâre doing work for the greater good, you donât question as much," says Javier Saade, a former Air America executive vice president. Actually, a good friend of mine was the VP of Operations at Air America from before the launch to a putsch just prior to Memorial Day. He said that the head money men lied to everyone and had originally said they would fund the project for 24 months no questions asked. Then they pulled the plug just as AAR was getting better ratings in NYC than Rush. My friend also thinks "Bush knew" about 9/11, which is why we only chat every once in a while...

You have got to read the story on WND about Air America, it would make Eron executives proud. It also shows a step-by-step process on how NOT to run a business. I donât think they will go away but they do have some serious financial problems (due to the business plan THEY developed).

As for the tide turning in WW1 by the time the US joined in, it had, but in favor of the Germans. By the time US troops were able to intervene in force, the spring of 1918, the Germans had knocked Russia out of the war, and were in the midst of their most successful offensive yet against Britain and France.
I'm sure some of our historians can provide more detail, but the Germans were close to winning outright by the time the US actually got involved.

In my school days I remember one teacher explicitly telling us that "Canadians don't like Americans", though she didn't give a reason why and did not otherwise engage in anti-American tirades. This was over two decades ago. I can imagine what sort of anti-American bile gets cranked out today.

I disagree in the sense that I think Germany could have won in 1918. Their spring offensive was pretty successful initially, but by that time the number of US troops in combat began to turn the tide (US troops in combat really began to be of important numbers in about June of 1918). With regard to France, as much as we like to dis them (and appropriately so for their recent actions), the loses she took in WWI were enormous. As a percentage of the population France was the hardest hit of that war. The whole country was shell-shocked.

Over half of the Kerry voters are voting "Against Bush" instead of "For Kerry", so this gives them an outlet, and can possibly take 3-5% of the "I hate Bush" vote. Take that out and it drops Kerry by 1-2% across the board - which is enough to throw Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania to Bush and basically gives Bush the Electoral college win. Plus it brings California into play. Which forces Kerry to spend his money playing Defense there against the Governator.

For the last few weeks Iâve had this gnawing belief that bin Laden got lucky by attacking during Bushâs term. Conventional wisdom says the opposite, because Bush fought back. But heâs the enemy now. I ask my Democrat friends what theyâd rather see happen â Bush reelected and bin Laden caught, or Bush defeated and bin Laden still in the wind. Theyâre all honest: theyâd rather see Bush defeated. (Theyâre quick to insist that theyâd want Kerry to get bin Laden ASAP. Although the details are sketchy.) Of course this doesnât mean theyâre unpatriotic, etc., obligatory disclaimers, et cetera. But letâs be honest. People are coming up with websites that demonstrate ingenious technology for spraying anti-Bush slogans on the sidewalks; it would be nice if they sprayed "DEFEAT TERRORISM" or "STOP AL QAEDA" now and then. Wouldnât it?

Yeah... rich countries like the US can afford squish fig leafs like the "minimum wage". It hasn't been raised in nearly a decade, and is probably due. It won't affect things one way or the other, I don't think, based on the last time they did it - right at the beginning of the Clinton "Long Boom".
In most regions, including my somewhat less impoverished corner of Appalachia, the current minimum wage is a dead letter. Nobody offers or takes true minimum wage work. Last time I looked, starting, dead-end crap work was starting at about 75 cents above the legal minimum. Once you get into the richer ends of the state, we're talking three dollars an hour more.

Personally, I have been in favor of a two tier minimum wage, with a national level (I think $7 would be reasonable if it was phased in over a few years) and a lower level in counties and parishes with a ten year history of high unemployment and where the elected county official requested a lower level. Of course this is a pretty geeky idea and, as far as I know, I'm the only one who advocates it.

The truth about minimum wage is that it only really effects young workers new to the workforce and otherwise unskilled. If you raise minimum wage it often become easier to not hire someone and work the others a bit harder to cover the difference.
Increased minimum wage means increased unemployment.
Decreased minimum wage means kids may choose not to take the jobs and the employer may have to raise the value to what the job is worth.

Take your monthly housing costs + food + utilities + mandatory auto insurance + medical + incidentals and make a real-life suggestion on what it should be. Unless a person is prepared to work 60-80 hours per week and walk 5-30 miles to work (most people commute a good distance, making a car & insurance a necessity), it is apparent that for many places in the country, anything in the $5.00-7.00 hr range isn't going to cut it. Theories and philosophies are useless in the face of real-life reality.
I sympathize with business owners but also with people who are unable to make ends meet while doing the right thing (working and not taking governmental support).

The minimum wage is just a baseline cost for employers that props up the wage envelope for employees. I live in somewhat rural Northern California and NOBODY pays minimum wage to the employees. Even the illegals working the fields make better than minimum wage. They (Democrats) act like government needs to dictate wages rather than market values. This is a TOTALLY MADE UP issue that I hope the Republicans expose communists lefty Democrat party for what they are.

Although I think the raise is reasonable (if you're going to have a minimum wage, you should at least adjust it to inflation), for Kerry to make this a campaign issue just shows that they are desparate for a platform. Bush should try and cancel it out with a 6.50 increase in 2005 and underscore it by saying it won't cost as many jobs. He really should ask "how does a raise in the min. wage HELP the economy?" or "what happens to the people currently making $7/hr?"

You know what's so "cool" about raising the minimum wage? It's that for a little bitty while people think they're making more money! It's so neat, because by the time pricing has caught up with the wage line, everyone has forgotten all about it. It's the perfect campaign strategy! After the recession starts, Kerry can blame Bush for the bad economy. And people will believe him because he's the one that raised their paycheck, to start.
Question: what do we do about the fact that $7 don't cut it, in terms of trying just live? What about the street?

The UN decided this month that responsibility for the Development Fund for Iraq will pass to the Iraqi interim government and be monitored by the the IAMB. The panel also intends to widen its scrutiny of past CPA spending by examining reports and audits by the Pentagonâs inspector general and the General Accounting Office, an official said. IAMB officials were meeting in Paris on Monday and were not available for comment. Some of KPMGâs most damning criticisms were of the State Organisation for Marketing Oil, responsible for the sale of Iraqâs most crucial asset. Oil sales, which go into the US-controlled fund, have topped $10bn since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. Somoâs only record of barter transactions was "an independent database, derived from verbal confirmations gained by Somo staff", the report found. The CPA declined to address the KPMG report, saying only that it "has been and will continue to discharge its responsibilities under the Iraqi Development Fund". One Iraqi minister due to take office on June 30 told the FT he and many colleagues felt "let down by how the CPA has controlled resources". Obviously the CPA is not paying enough bribes.

Iranian officials have said that smoking the hubble-bubble, or water-pipe, will be banned in all restaurants and leisure places from Monday. The water-pipe is one of the most traditional instruments of relaxation and indulgence in the Middle East. In Iran, where it is known as the qalyoun, it has been at the centre of traditional culture for centuries. The sweet scent of fruit-flavoured tobacco wafting around restaurants and teahouses is a familiar part of any scene of public relaxation in Tehran. But not for long - if the authorities have their way. Police and public health officials will now be out and about making sure that this latest clampdown on public pleasure is fully applied. Restaurant owners and people caught smoking the qalyoun on their premises or in public places will be liable to fines and confiscation of the offending items. For a transitional period only, private rooms may be set aside for men only to indulge their habit. It is not clear quite why this highly popular, traditional and seemingly innocent pastime is being suppressed. Officially, it is to do with health - but cigarette smoking is still permitted in restaurants and elsewhere - and is generally regarded as much more harmful. The move comes amid preparations for a broader summer crackdown on what hardline officials here call "social corruption". This includes poor observance of Islamic dress codes and public morals, parties involving alcohol and the mingling of unmarried people from both sexes.
It is in this context that most people are bound to see the move to oust the hubble-bubble from public sight and scent, especially since young people have recently taken increasingly to gathering around the qalyoun to smoke and flirt. It remains to be seen how successful the drive will be in such a big country where the practice is so widespread. Qalyoun vendors complain that their sales have already been plummeting. But it is not illegal to sell the pipes or to use them at home, so the indulgence is certain at least to be kept alive where most Iranians have their real fun nowadays - behind closed doors. How long is Mr Average Iranian going to put up with these asshats? Doubtless those RBâers who chided me for defending smoking in public places will be delighted with the Mullahsâ actions.

During '96 & '97, We used to go down town in Kuwait City to the local Fudruckers (or was it Applebees?) on the gulf for a meal and a round of Shee-Sha pipe. Good stuff, the tobacco was like apple Beechnut, the smoke was produced by a piece of charcoal on top of the leafs. Good smoke, very relaxing. The Bongs we smoked were quite fancy, lots of carved brass and ornately colored glass. On a bet, I tried smoking a pinch of my Copenhagen at the Egyptian Bunk House; after my first (and only) puff, I saw Elvis, Jesus, and a few other notable characters before going into convulsions. Copenhagen. It's not just for breakfast anymore.

In nearly simultaneous attacks, assailants armed with grenade- and rocket-launchers seized the Interior Ministry headquarters and police buildings in Ingushetia, a Russian region bordering warring Chechnya, local officials said Tuesday. Emergency and military officials estimated 100 to 300 armed assailants were involved in the attacks, which took place in the city of Nazran and at least one village, Karabulak. Fighting from the 4-year-old Chechen war has occasionally spilled into Ingushetia, highlighting the Russian militaryâs ineffectiveness against the rebels despite having heavier weapons and far superior manpower. But the latest attack comes after recent statements by separatist leaders indicating plans to step up military actions outside of Chechnya. In addition to the Interior Ministry building in Nazran, which was attacked late Monday, assailants seized police buildings in Karabulak, the Interior Ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Emergency officials in Rostov-on-Don said that the fighters had targeted border guard posts in Karabulak and Nazran, and that three Russian servicemen had been wounded.
Acting Ingush Interior Minister Abukar Koshtoyev was wounded in the first minutes of the fighting in Nazran and was taken to Vladikavkaz in neighboring North Ossetia, where he died, the Ingush Interior Ministry official said. A convoy of three ambulances later could be seen speeding into Vladikavkaz from Ingushetia. The ITAR-Tass news agency reported that the building of the border guard service in Nazran and an Interior Ministry warehouse in the city were on fire.
A three-man crew from Russiaâs NTV television said they came upon some of the attackers at a border crossing as the crew tried to reach Nazran from neighboring North Ossetia. "Out of the dark, a voice says âStop, put your hands on the hood,â said NTV correspondent Maxim Berezin. That is what the Supreme Court did in Bush versus Gore. It put somebody in power,â said Guido Calabresi, a judge on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, which sits in Manhattan. âThe reason I emphasize that is because that is exactly what happened when Mussolini was put in by the king of Italy,â Judge Calabresi continued, as the allusion drew audible gasps from some in the luncheon crowd Saturday at the annual convention of the American Constitution Society. âThe king of Italy had the right to put Mussolini in, though he had not won an election, and make him prime minister. That is what happened when Hindenburg put Hitler in. "Urk. Excuse me while I remove my foot from my mouth."

From a federal appeals judge, Guidoâs remarks (assuming they have been correctly reported) are not only tendentious and inflammatory, but will serve to further encourage those who call the federal courts politicized and overweeningly liberal.
Hitlerâs and Mussoliniâs faults did not include Bushâs supposed fault. Bushâs faults do not include Hitlerâs and Mussoliniâs faults. The supposed analogy that Judge Calabresi is making thus seems to have no basis at all. . . . So what possible legitimate role does the analogy to Hitler and Mussolini have here?
. . . Judge Calabresiâs remarks go too far. His speech constitutes an unambiguous violation of the Code of Conduct [for United States Judges]. He has improperly publicly declared opposition to a specific political candidate (and thereby implicitly endorsed another). Such brazen politicking from members of the federal bench cannot be tolerated.

Problem is, Bush was not 'placed in power' by the supreme court but was elected. It was a fair, open, and honest election and the winner of the election was George W. Bush.
The supremes only ruled that the election was proper and not 'stolen'. They did not rule that Bush was the winner or 'put someone in power'. There is a large difference.

I read a story about how to fix manual recount elections by rehandling ballots until the chads fall out an invalidate the ballots. Its been a sucessful strategy for the DNC in several California elections. One DNC operative, is quoted as having said that he could win any election that is within 100 votes. My guess is that Hitler or Mussolini would have whole-heartedly adopted that methodology. Why would it be wrong to stop a group of crooks enegaged in that type of game?
As Calabresi studied Hitler, is it possible that he ran across this quote? - "By means of shrewd lies, unremittingly repeatedly, it is possible to make people beleive that heaven is hell - and hell heaven."

I absolutely cannot fathom why the government can demand your identity and jail you for not providing it, in the absence of a crime or reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. The police shoudl at least have to tell you why you were stopped or pulled aside to be identified PRIOR to demanding your ID. Kind of like the Miranda warning.

SpaceShipOne took off from the Mojave Airport, nestled beneath its White Knight carrier plane, at about 6:45 a.m. PT, sailing up into the clear desert sky. About an hour later, at an altitude of almost 50,000 feet, the White Knight released its companion craft, and SpaceShipOne test pilot Mike Melvill lit up his rocket engine for a 70-second straight-up blast. About 15 minutes later, officials announced that Melvill and SpaceShipOne had done it, reaching an altitude of at least 62 miles (100 kilometers), the internationally recognized boundary of outer space. At around 8:15 a.m. PT, SpaceShipOne glided safely back to Earth, landing back at the Mojave Airport.

Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov, who has built a vast personality cult, on Monday asked government officials not to stop praising him. "I have a request: don't praise me. I even feel uncomfortable appearing at various meetings and events," Niyazov told a Cabinet meeting. "It upsets me that I'm the only one who gets credit for all Turkmenistan's achievements. In fact, they belong to the entire Turkmen people," Niyazov said.

Last month, in a surprise move, Niyazov ordered removal of his portraits from administrative buildings. No reason was given. But a new bronze and stone monument depicting Niyazov taking an oath as president was unveiled Monday in front of the parliament building in the capital Ashgabat to mark 12 years since his inauguration as the nation's leader as an independent country. Niyazov, has ruled 1985 in this former Soviet republic and prefers to be called Turkmenbashi, or "the Father of all Turkmens." He has made himself the central element of independent Turkmen national culture. His image is inescapable in the capital Ashgabat, with dozens of billboards and monuments to him adorning virtually every street corner. Niyazov's golden statue in Ashgabat's main square rotates to always face the sun. His face is on the country's currency and his golden profile is the national television's logo, adorning the television screen. There are more then a dozen Niyazov's monuments around Ashgabat. The new one is next to a similar monument in front of the Defense Ministry building.

Aids is the leading cause of death in military and police forces in Africa, according to research. A study carried out by scientists in Nigeria says Aids could now be responsible for more than half the deaths in these services. The researchers interviewed about 500 Nigerian naval officers. Almost a third of those interviewed admitted having had sex with prostitutes, with nearly a half saying they did not use a condom. Many knew how HIV was transmitted, but more than 50% thought a cure for Aids was already available. The research was published in the Biomedcentral Public Health Journal.

In further work the scientists also reviewed much of the available data on HIV in the military. According to the scientists, this type of lifestyle - being posted away from partners for long periods of time - encourages soldiers to have sex elsewhere and has lead to HIV being a major problem in many African countries. Tackling the issue in the military, the authors say, is one of the most realistic ways of controlling the spread of HIV across Nigeria. The country has one of the worldâs highest numbers of people living with the Aids virus, according to Nigeriaâs health minister. Does this article strike anyone else as not a little disingenuous?
Why is there no mention of mass rape being a common practice among African military men? Gang rape would certainly vector HIV more quickly than even an active prostitute could on her best night.
I suppose it would be culturally insensitive of me to suggest such a thing or expect there to be any outcry and condemnation regarding it. Can anybody tell that Iâm just dripping with sympathy for all these uniformed thugs who have acquired themselves a one-way ticket to Hell?
If only they were unable to further transmit this plague, their punishment would be ultimately fitting. Sadly, there exists the horrific misconception that sex with a virgin will cure HIV.
There also exists a distorted belief in some Asian and African countries that having sex with a virgin will cure HIV. (These notions are unfounded and false. In fact, the average rate for HIV infected children rescued from brothels is 50 percent, and some rates are as high as 90 percent.)
One can only dread to think of how many more child rapes will result from all these soldiers being diagnosed as HIV positive. Again, no mention of such "culturally insensitive" information like this which might lessen any sympathy for what has to be some of the most brutally criminal armies in the world.
At some point this sort of biased reporting crosses the line and begins facilitating the crimes they fail to document accurately.

Nah. Pretend you're a reporter. Where do you want to be stationed? London or Freetown? Right. Instant news bias.
And we might as well face it; a large fraction of Americans are content with tabloid-journalism. Some of us want more; so we go to places like Rantburg or roundups of Liberian news reports to find things that not even the BBC bothers to notice. (And the BBC, for all its biases, provides an order of magnitude more Africa news than my local newspaper.)
Does racism play a role in reporting? Maybe not, but the value of an overseas story does seem to correlate with the race of the participants. You can explain it in terms of connections instead or racism. Most of us have more connections to people and events in richer countries; so stories from those countries will get more audience bang for the buck (unless there's lots of blood involved).
But back to the story at hand: armies are proving to be very effective at spreading AIDS, whatever else they do. There are several kinds of armies, of course. I suspect gang rape is more common in the militias and fighting units, and stealing women to bring along for cooking and sex. The garrison troops seem more likely to use prostitutes and pick up a new woman for cooking and sex at each redeployment--less likely to go in for rape. I don't have hard numbers, but that's the impression I get from reports.

Someone should really gather together those who want to be protected from harm into a giant camp and gaurd it with a militia. I'm sure they're plenty of decent men, who if armed right, would defend the camp to the death. Not to mention teaching the women to fight back would help.
Of course, all this is just a dream for me. It would take years of planning, Government approval, supplies, ect that would have to be diverted from elsewhere, like the UN programs. And that will never happen.

And we might as well face it; a large fraction of Americans are content with tabloid-journalism.
This is one of the most damning aspects of modern American culture. That people even read rags like The Inquirer and The Star, much less actually believe them is a searing indictment of our nation's educational system.

Thank you, Frank G, for making sure that compassion wasn't lost amongst the recriminations. My deeply cynical attitude about African politics has led me think that AIDS may almost be necessary to eradicate the viciously chauvinist culture of male privilege that continues to plague that continent. The corrupt and often tribal mentality that drives so much of their genocide and abuse must be stopped somehow and it looks like only an epidemic will achieve such an end.

Ahem, there is no polite way to say this but the life span of the average adult in many portions of Africa is not really all that high to begin with. How can you be scared of a disease which will kill you in 12-15 years (Africans are generally tougher than we are) when you don't figure you're going to live more than another six anyhow? You add to that fact things like the government of Zimbabwe passing out pamplets which tell their population that AIDS is a myth the white man cooked up....
President Robert Mugabe's government said it would honor ownership rights to land bought on the property market, backtracking on previous announcements it would nationalize all farmland, according to a state newspaper report. Citing a letter by Foreign Ministry official Joe Bimha to Zimbabwe embassies abroad, the Sunday Mail reported that the government would be nationalizing only the land it had seized under its land reform program. "The correct position is that all land acquired under the current phase of the land reform program now reposes to the state," Bimha was quoted as saying.
Which is all the good stuff.
The report clarifies a June 8 statement by Land Reform Minister John Nkomo that title deeds to all productive land were being abolished and replaced with 99-year state-issued leases. Nkomo's statement raised fears of massive new seizures of farms, industrial holdings, private properties and even homes. "In the end, there shall be no such thing as Zimbabwe private land," Nkomo had said.
"All ownership will repose with the king..."
But Bimha said only land seized by the state, including more than 5,000 farms confiscated from former white owners for redistribution to new black farmers, was being nationalized. "With respect to land falling outside this category, the applicable constitutional provisions (of ownership) remain valid," he was quoted as saying. Mugabe argues redistribution is needed to redress British colonial injustices, when much of the best farmland was settled by whites. About 200,000 black families have been allocated land under the government program, most for small-scale farming. Scores of others have bought commercial farms. Critics of the redistribution program say much of the best farmland has been allocated to Mugabe's croniesthug-boyscrookssyncophants supporters and is currently underutilized or lying fallow.
