#2 Muslim's instinctively need an Icon to look up to. Since Turkey is a democracy, I would guess that the people chose Niyazov. Whether he wanted it or not isn't the question, it's that the people give him the praise willingly.

Turkmenistan ranks about to the level of North Korea, as to how democratic it is. It's one of the old Soviet Union break-away states, Charles, next to Uzbekistan.
