[Mercer] America’s crumbling education system is in the news. On October 5th, Joe Biden managed to disgorge some dismal indicators as to the future prospects of America’s youth compared to the rest of the developed world.
Joe didn’t quite say it, but America’s kids, the product of an obscenely well-funded school system, rank last in the developed world in reading, writing and math, making homegrown retardation a far more pressing problem in modern-day America than homegrown terrorism.
Yet conservatives have kept insisting, throughout the Covid lockdowns and quarantines, that kids were missing out on an education because they were out of school.
To paraphrase Joan Rivers, how can you miss out on a rash? (When Madonna accused Lady Gaga of stealing her music, the great, late, lady Joan wanted to know how you could steal a rash.)
A particularly startling fact caught my attention in the Economist. "At 15, children in Massachusetts, where education standards are higher than in most states, are so far behind their counterparts in Shanghai at math, that it would take them more than two years of regular education to catch up."
This last fact is enormously telling and alarming. It tells you that America’s best schools and students can’t compete with the world’s best.

Chinese schools are a dumpster fire, with children being assigned piles of meaningless homework every day, and being taught to regurgitate facts on demand rather than learning. Don't compare anyone to them.

The Chinese get all their education from paid tutors, beginning as soon as the kids can read. Chinese and Korean (also Russian) immigrants to this country continue the tradition here: they know our schools suck and are unwilling to let their kids fall 2+ years behind their cousins in the home country.
Given the collapse of American education, remote-education tutors and homeschooling will be the only viable path for American high-achieving kids of any background. Which means the American public school system will collapse in about 15-20 years.

When it comes to actions taken to address the Covid-19 threat, hindsight is still very much underway. For your consideration: a story and outcome you probably aren’t hearing much about anywhere else. It takes place in the heart of Amish country.

True, I would have expected this. They do suffer much of the modern ailments of modern humankind. Being outside in the sunlight. Working physically hard has many benefits as well.Heart, diabetes and cancer problems they currently suffer and from horse hair and such things. To the point they have to quit. An Amish riddle. On what side does the horses hair grow best?. Well of course on the outside.

"Why is it us Amish don't get the COVID, Ezra?"
"It's because we don't watch the TV, Josiah..."

Col. Trevor N. Dupuy, an author I really liked, observed that "1 in 6 pre-war divisional commander were sacked in the first months of the war". The political and bureaucratic skills to advance in peace really don't make you a good warfighter...
A multi-volume chronology and reference guide set detailing three years of the Mexican Drug War between 2010 and 2012.
Rantburg.com and borderlandbeat.com correspondent and author Chris Covert presents his first non-fiction work detailing
the drug and gang related violence in Mexico.
Chris gives us Mexican press dispatches of drug and gang war violence
over three years, presented in a multi volume set intended to chronicle the death, violence and mayhem which has
dominated Mexico for six years.
Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
trees were destroyed in the production of this weblog. We did hurt some, though. Sorry.
