Islamist militants attack African military base in Mali, at least six dead
[AlAhram] Islamist holy warriors armed with rockets and explosives raided the headquarters of an African military taskforce in central Mali, leaving at least six people dead on Friday, a front man for the force said.

Assailants driving a vehicle rigged with bombs attacked the compound in the town of Sevare as some exchanged gunfire with Malian troops and fought to get in, officials said.

Pictures from the scene showed the charred remains of a vehicle, a crater and the battered walls of the buildings, which are used by the G5 Sahel, a regional force created last year to root out Islamist holy warriors in West Africa's semi-arid Sahel region

, Chad and Mauritania - said two soldiers and four assailants died in the attack.

"The attackers fired rockets at the headquarters and some of them infiltrated the compound. There was an exchange of fire," defence ministry front man Boubacar Diallo told Rooters.

A U.N. source in Sevare, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said that the compound was hit by a boom-mobile. Gunfire had died down by mid-afternoon, the source added.

Extremism watchdog SITE, which monitors turban activity globally, said Al Qaeda's branch in Mali had reportedly grabbed credit for the attack and described it as a suicide kaboom.

The attack comes a month before Mali's presidential election.

Violence by Islamist holy warriors has proliferated in the sparsely-populated Sahel in recent years, with groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. using central and northern Mali as a launchpad for attacks across the region.

Western powers, including La Belle France and the United States, have provided significant funding to the G5 in a bid to beat back the jihadists. But the force has been slow to get off the ground, hobbled by delays disbursing the money and coordinating among the five countries.

The French defence ministry said in a report on Thursday that around 15 assailants were killed when a detachment of its forces, alongside Malian commandos, clashed with a group of around 20 holy warriors on June 22.

It said the clash, which required helicopter support, led to the seizure or destruction of many materials including two pickups and six cycle of violences, munitions and heavy and light weapons.

A separate U.N. peacekeeping mission in Mali, MINUSMA, declined to comment on the attack on the G5 compound

Sahel anti-terror force vows to fight on after suicide kaboom on HQ

[AlAhram] A five-nation African anti-terror task force vowed Saturday to press on in its battle against jihadists, the day after a suicide attack on the outfit's headquarters in Mali killed two soldiers and a civilian.

Friday's attack by a bomber in a vehicle painted in UN colours destroyed the building's entrance wall.

It was the first attack on the headquarters of the G5 force, set up with the backing of La Belle France in 2017 to roll back jihadist gunnies and criminal groups in the vast, unstable Sahel region.

"The conditions of this force will improve," Mauritanian Foreign Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said. "This shows our determination rather than an indication of any weakness."

The French and Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
ian presidents condemned the attack and discussed the security situation in the Lake Chad area, the French leader's office said Saturday.

"This demonstrates once again the importance of the vision of the heads of state to create this force which can respond to these difficulties," the foreign minister said in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott.

The al-Qaeda-linked Support Group for Islam and Moslems, the main jihadist alliance in Africa's Sahel region, claimed the attack in a telephone call to the Mauritanian news agency al-Akhbar.

The strike in the Malian town of Sevare came shortly after Friday prayers, a military source in the G5 Sahel force told AFP.

Governor Sidi Alassane Toure said four suspects had been tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
UN secretary general Antonio Guterres, who visited the Sevare headquarters last month, highlighted security shortcomings on several of the force's sites in Mali in a report published in May.

"Poor conditions on and around the site represent an important security threat, and are delaying the deployment of the remaining soldiers," the report said.

The strike came three days before a meeting in Nouakchott between French President Emmanuel Macron and the heads of the G5 Sahel states to discuss progress made by the force.

The G5 Sahel aims to have a total of 5,000 troops from five nations — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, but has faced funding problems. It operates alongside La Belle France's 4,000 troops in the troubled "tri-border" area where Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso meet, and alongside the UN's 12,000-strong MINUSMA peacekeeping operation in Mali.

The G5 Sahel was scheduled to be fully mobilised by mid-2018, but its deployment has faced delays, equipment worries and accusations of human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
abuses.

On Tuesday, the UN said Malian soldiers within the force had "summarily" executed 12 civilians in a market in central Mali in May in retaliation for the death of a soldier.

La Belle France intervened militarily in Mali in 2013 to help government forces drive al-Qaeda-linked jihadists out of the north. But large tracts of the country remain lawless despite a peace accord signed with ethnic Tuareg leaders in mid-2015 aimed at isolating the jihadists. The violence has also spilled over into both Burkina Faso and Niger.

Europe
Italy, Malta in fresh stand-off over boat carrying 59 migrants
[AlAhram] A rescue boat saved 59 migrants colonists at sea off Libya on Saturday and Italia immediately said it would not welcome them, setting up a fresh stand-off with Malta and adding to tensions among European governments over immigration.

The migrants colonists on board Open Arms, a boat run by the Spanish Proactiva Open Arms charity, include five women and four children, said Riccardo Gatti, head of the organization's Italian mission.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the right-wing League Party, said there would be no exception to his policy of refusing to let humanitarian boats dock in Italia and added that Malta was the nearest port of call.

"They can forget about arriving in an Italian port," he tweeted.

Maltese Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia, shot back on Twitter that the rescue had taken place closer to the Italian island of Lampedusa than to Malta.

He told Salvini to "stop giving false information and involving Malta without any reason."

Gatti told Italian radio broadcaster Radio Radicale that the migrants colonists on board included Paleostinians, Syrians and Guineans and were all in good condition.

He later told Rooters that Open Arms had received no authorisation from any country to dock, and did not know where it would take the migrants colonists.

On Wednesday Malta let the German charity ship Lifeline dock in Valletta with 230 migrants colonists on board, after it was stuck at sea for almost a week following Italia's decision to close its ports to rescue vessels run by non-government organizations.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said the gesture was a one-time "ad-hoc" resolution to the crisis and the following day Malta announced it would not allow any more charity boats to dock.

European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
leaders on Friday came to a hard-fought agreement over migration that Salvini and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said was positive for Italia.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
the agreement does not oblige other EU states to share the burden of sea rescues.

More than 650,000 migrants colonists have come ashore in Italia since 2014, mostly after being rescued at sea off the Libyan coast by private and public groups. Italia is sheltering about 170,000, but the number of arrivals has plummeted this year.

Despite the decline in arrivals, there are still daily stories of disasters as migrants colonists make the perilous crossing from Africa to Europe. The Libyan coastguard said around 100 were thought to have drowned off Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
on Friday.

That tragedy raised the political temperature in Italia, where the government dismissed opposition accusations that it was responsible due to its crackdown on NGOs, and said the best way to save lives was by preventing departures from Libya.

"The fewer people set sail, the fewer die," Salvini said.

(ISIS) from the region, Kurdistan 24 reported, citing the head of the Iraqi Border Guards.

According to the Kurdistan 24 report, the commander of the Iraqi Border Guards, Major General Hamid ’Abdullah Ibrahim, told the news agency that they completed the construction of a barbed-wire fence along the Iraq-Syrian border.

"We are now concerned about the Syrian border. We have put forward a program based on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s request...and are doing strategic work to protect the border," Ibrahim said in a press statement, as quoted by Kurdistan 24.

The Iraqi Border Guards are now working to install thermal cameras to prevent any further Islamic State infiltrations from Syria.

"Neither infiltrators nor smugglers nor holy warriors will penetrate our borders in the future," the Maj. Gen. continued, adding the border guards’ work will expand following the strengthening of the Syrian-Jordanian-Iraqi border triangle.

As the good General twiddled with his magnificent mustache, there was snickering heard from the areas off-camera.

Probably from the smugglers in his entourage.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF brings 6 wounded Syrians into Israel for treatment
[IsraelTimes] Four of the maimed are children aged 6 to 14 whose families were reportedly all killed in the fighting between the Syrian army and rebels in the southwestern part of the country.

Six Syrians, who were moderately-to-seriously maimed in the battles between the Syrian army and rebels in the southern part of the country, were transferred by the IDF to hospitals in Israel for treatment over the weekend.

Among the Syrian maimed are four children aged 6 to 14, whose families were reportedly all killed in the fighting.

On Friday night, the IDF Northern Command's medical forces were called to the border fence in the southern Golan Heights, where they provided the maimed Syrians with life-saving initial treatment in the field.

Troops from the IDF's 366th Division, also known as the Path of Fire Division, then transferred the maimed to hospitals in northern Israel in a complex operation.

According to the IDF, throughout the Syrian civil war, there has been a severe shortage of medical infrastructure, doctors and medicine. The IDF has been providing Syrian civilians caught in the crossfire with life-saving humanitarian aid, while at the same time avoids interfering in the fighting.

The IDF also said that since 2013, over 3,500 Syrian maimed were brought into Israel for medical treatment, including men, women and kiddies.

Since 2016, over 1,300 sick Syrian children were brought into Israel for one-day treatments by expert doctors.

One field clinic the IDF established along with international aid organizations in the southern Golan has treated some 6,000 patients since its opening in August 2017.

In total, over 4,800 Syrians received treatment in Israel, with 33 percent of them men, 17 percent women and some 50 percent children.

The IDF delivered about 60 tons of humanitarian aid to the Syrian Golan Heights on Thursday night. During the special overnight operation, some 300 tents, 13 tons of food, 15 tons of baby food, three pallets of medical equipment and medicine and some 30 tons of clothes and shoes were transferred into Syria from four different spots on the border.

2 Palestinians killed, 5 injured in mystery Gaza Strip explosion
[IsraelTimes] Cause of blast in neighborhood of Shejaiya not yet known; Gazoo boy killed Friday buried amid calls for Dire Revenge; he was son of Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", terror commander

At least two Paleostinians were killed and five injured on Saturday evening in an kaboom in an apartment in the Gazoo City neighborhood of Shejaiya, according to the Hamas-run Gazoo health ministry.

The cause of the blast was not immediately known, but there were suggestions it was the result of mishandling of explosives.

Hadashot TV news reported that the family in whose home the kaboom occurred is affiliated with Fatah, Hamas’s Paleostinian rival, which was violently tossed by the terror group now ruling Gazoo in 2007.

By contrast, Haaretz reported that the apartment held firecrackers and other explosives, and cited a Paleostinian source as saying there were indications the alleged lab belonged to Hamas’s armed wing.

The paper also said the two Gazooks killed were 17-year-old Mouayed Hals and Dia al-Arar, also 17.

Earlier Saturday, Israeli firefighters battled five blazes sparked by incendiary devices flown toward Israeli communities from Gazoo.

Saturday’s fires come a day after the Hamas-run health ministry said two Paleostinians were killed Friday in violent demonstrations along the Gazoo Strip’s border with Israel. A 13-year-old was fatally shot in the head and a 24-year-old man died of gunshot wounds to his leg and abdomen, the ministry said.

According to some reports, the boy was shot while sabotaging the border fence. A paramedic told AP the teenager was throwing stones "very close to the fence" when he was shot. Reports from his funeral Saturday named him as Yasser Abu al-Naja, and said he was the son of senior "commander" in the Hamas terror group’s military wing. AFP put his age at 11. Thousands of Gazooks attended the funeral, with mourners demanding "Dire Revenge.”
Ynet adds:
Firefighting forces battled 24 blazes on Saturday caused by incendiary balloons and kites flown from Gazoo. All fires are under control.

Four protesters killed in southwestern Iran after security forces open fire
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iranian security forces have shot and killed at least four protesters after demonstrations erupted for a second day in a row in the southwestern city of Muhammarah, activists told Al Arabiya English.

Videos of the protests have been circulating on social media showing festivities between demonstrators and security forces of the Revolutionary Guards with "death to Khamenei slogans" slogans being heard.

The news of protesters death comes a day after major protests erupted on Friday as thousands of people gathered in Khorramshahr city in front of the city’s central mosque.

The rallies protested against what activists described as a deteriorating economic situation of their city, as well as the lack of support for their towns with slogans being chanted against "regime thieves" being heard.

Protesters Chant Anti-Regime Slogans In Khorramshahr City
Last week, traders at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar staged a rare strike following earlier reports of street protests in provincial cities.

Iranians have been hit by rising prices, and record levels of unemployment have left a third of under 30s out of work.

The latest protests follow dozens over the new year which left at least 25 people dead.

Syrian Army advances through strategic town in east Daraa
[EN.ABNA24] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) reached the newly liberated town of al-Hirak in the eastern countryside of the Daraa Governorate on Friday.

Footage shows truckloads of soldiers as they pass through battle-damaged streets.

According to the Syrian news agency SANA, the SAA was successful in re-establishing control over several villages northeast of Daraa city and operations are now underway to clear the areas of mines and improvised bombs (IEDs).

The fighting is part of a week long offensive in the area, which according to the UN has displaced up to 45,000 people.

The majority of those displaced have reportedly fled from the eastern parts of Daraa towards the country’s southern border with Jordan.
