17 Killed, 37 Injured As Suicide Bomber Attacks Protesters In Khost
[Tolo News] A deadly suicide kaboom in eastern Khost province
... across the border from Miranshah, within commuting distance of Haqqani hangouts such as Datta Khel and probably within sight of Mordor. Khost is populated by six different tribes of Pashtuns, the largest probably being the Khostwal, from which it takes its name...
has claimed 17 lives where 37 others sustained injuries, according to a statement by the interior ministry.

The incident took place around 9:30 am Thursday when a jacket wallah went kaboom! near the protesters who had staged a rally against the acting governor, accusing him of corruption and land usurpation.

The MP Hamayoun Hamayoun, head of Parliamentary defense committee, was also injured in the attack, the statement added.

Sources close to Hamayoun told TOLOnews that the driver, guards and secretary of Hamayoun were also among those killed.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
the Khost Police Chief initially said that the number of injured had reached to 50.

The victims have been taken to the hospitals while the area has been cordoned off by the security forces.

The Taliban, in a statement, have denied links to the attack.

11 More Insurgents Killed In Zulfiqar Operation
[Tolo News] At least 11 hard boyz were killed and 11 others maimed during Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) Zulfiqar Operation in Sangin and Musa Qala districts of southern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province, according to Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoI) statement.

Hundreds of Taliban hard boyz were sheltering in these districts as part of their preparations for the summer offensive, the statement said.

A Taliban capo Jamil was also among the killed Lion of Islams, it added.

The statement, however, did not comment whether the security forces were harmed in the operation.

The Zulfiqar Operation is being conducted for about two months in the unsafe districts of Helmand.

In a separate fighting between the hard boyz and ANA forces in the Musa Qala, at least five hard boyz were killed and four others maimed, according to the statement.

Two other hard boyz were killed when they were planting mine in Greshk district.

A number of mines and other bombs were defused in Marja, Nawa and Sangin districts.

Africa Horn
Kenya corpse count now at 151
[AA.TR] Authorities confirmed late Thursday the end of an 16-hour bad boy attack -- claimed by the al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
group -- on northern Kenya's Garissa University College, leaving at least 151 dead.

"I want now to confirm to Kenya that the operation has ended successfully and that all four murderous Moslems have been killed," Cabinet Secretary for Interior Joseph Nkaissery told news hounds.

"It's unfortunate that the murderous Moslems were able to kill young good citizens very early in the morning," he said.

"As I speak to you, it is saddening that we have lost 147 lives," added the government official.

Nkaissery said 79 students were maimed.

"Nine are at death's door and have been airlifted to Nairobi," he added.

The minister said the attackers had strapped themselves with improvised bombs.

"When our officers shot them, they blew up killing some of our men," he said. "Some of the shrapnel injured most of our officers."

The official said that in the morning one army officer, one policeman and two guards were killed.

Nkaissery did not clarify how many of the other 147 dead were students and how many were security forces.

He assured the nation that 518 students have been accounted for and are in the military compounds in Garissa.

"Very early tomorrow, we will evacuate them to their homes," he vowed. "Everything has been taken care of."

Al Muhajiroun -- Al Qaeda's New Branch In Kenya
[Intel Briefs] Al Qaeda has established a new dedicated branch for Kenya. The branch, called Al Muhajiroun, is subordinated to Somalia-based Al Shabaab as it is still at its infancy. Later on, Al Qaeda hopes that it will exists an an independent functional terror outfit. Al Muhajiroun appears to be made up entirely of members of Ansar al Mujahideen. One of its senior leaders is Ahmed Iman Ali (alias Abu Zinnrah), the former leader of MYC (Muslim Youth Centre which has rebranded itself as Al Hijra) and former chairman of Pumwani Riyadha Mosque.

Ansar al Mujahideen has fought alongside Harakat-al-Shabaab-al-Mujahideen (HSM) in Somalia as a separate but cohesive unit made up of foreign jihadists. HSM has acknowledged, acceded and recognized their efforts in prolonging the lifespan of the Islamist insurgency in Somalia.

Al Qaeda, noting the limitations of Al Shabaab, has decided to create a new branch for exporting jihad into Kenya and East Africa in general; and Al Muhajiroun is the result.

Members of Al Muhajiroun are predominantly from Kenya, Canada, Australia and France. The members have made baya’ah (an oath of allegiance) to the emir of Al Shabaab,Sheikh Ahmad Umar Abu Ubaidah. Al-Muhajiroun – as Emigrants of East Africa – has also made a collective solemn and irrevocable baya’ah to Ayman al Zawahiri, the leader of Al Qaeda; and also recognizes him as the overall leader of Jihadists in East Africa.
Sheikh Ahmad Umar Abu Ubaidah
One of the senior leaders of al Muhajiroun is of Kenyan extraction and goes by the moniker Abu Salim al-Kenyi; and who SIS has identified as non-other than Ahmed Iman Ali.

Though the group main focus of operation is Kenya, its chief objectives are to spread jihad in East Africa as well as recalibrating Islamic discourse in the region so that it aligns to a strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islamic teachings.

#2  whatever their name, like all the others their allegiance is to fascist Islamism and I for one wish that news agencies would now refer to that movement as what it is: Islamist. Instead of trying to downplay and even to hide that motivating factor.

#1 Different critter, same name. I've put in a second "File under" category for it and we'll use it for nastiness in Kenya and Tanzania.

Qaeda's at the point now where they have to go for spectacular corpse counts to avoid being overshadowed by the Caliphate. Meanwhile, al-Shabaab, which supposedly owns al-Muhajiroun, is having public relations problems within Somalia, besides getting their butts kicked by Kenyan troops.

Al Muhajiroun Secret Communications Reveal That Most Amniyaat Cells In Kenya Have Been Destroyed
[INTELLIGENCEBRIEFS] Intercepted secret correspondences between al Muhajiroun intelligence operatives in East Africa; and their commanders in Somalia, Yemen

and Afghanistan; have revealed that most Amniyaat intelligence cells in Kenya have been identified and dismantled by Kenyan security forces thus disrupting al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
activities in major Kenya towns, especially Nairobi and Mombasa.
I hadn't heard of al-Muhajiroun before, outside the Anjem Chaudry organization in Britain.
The communiqués also reveal that al-Shabaab intelligence cells established in Kenya were mainly staffed by Somalis, Tanzanian Moslems and a few Kenyan converts. Al Muhajiroun has criticized the make-up of such cells, as their composition hinders the cell members from blending smoothly into the local population as language barriers, foreign accents and unbecoming names give the cell members away. In Mombasa, one terror cell was led by Sheikh Buda while in Nairobi an Amniyaat agent known as Ruta faced difficulties due to his foreign mannerism. Ruta was killed during a counter-terrorism operation.

Al Muhajiroun intelligence operatives have also expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
that Kenya is increasingly adopting effective counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism measures whose implementation have disrupted logistics, recruitment and planning of attacks. At the moment, the terror operatives are requesting their overlords to send them terror experts. However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
Kenya's security forces have put in place measures to apprehend and destroy these foreign jihadis.

Egypt jihadists kill 15 soldiers and two civilians in Sinai
[al-Monitor] Jihadists in Egypt's Sinai killed 15 soldiers and two civilians in attacks on checkpoints on Thursday, security officials said, the deadliest in months despite a massive army campaign against the murderous Moslems.

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group's Egypt branch, simultaneously opened fire with assault rifles and grenade launchers at five checkpoints in the restive north of the peninsula, the security officials said.

Medics confirmed 15 soldiers and two non-combatants were killed in the attacks. Military sources said 15 snuffies also died in an exchange of fire but the toll could not be verified by medics.

It was the deadliest attack in Sinai since suicide boom-mobileers and gunnies killed more than 30 soldiers at a military base in North Sinai's capital El-Arish in January, prompting Egypt's president to shakeup the military command.

The army has since claimed it killed more than 170 snuffies in air strikes and ambushes.

Thursday's attacks suggested the jihadists were still capable of conducting large scale attacks in broad daylight despite a massive army deployment.

In a separate incident, a mortar shell fell on a house east of El-Arish, wounding three civilians, police and health officials said.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis -- Partisans of Jerusalem in English -- changed its name last year to the Sinai Province after pledging allegiance to IS, which controls territory in Iraq and Syria.

Africa Subsaharan
Somalia: Killing Kenyans Is A Revered Tradition
[Strategy] Islamic terrorism and other forms of disorder appear easier to deal with than the endemic and crippling corruption that has prevented efficient (or any) government and greatly limited economic growth. The basic problem is the traditional clan (tribal) form of government persists and this system depends on what Westerners regard as corruption. But to most Somalis looking out for your clan (no matter what the cost to your neighbors) is a tradition too many Somalis are unwilling to give up. The current government has some Western trained officials but they are not able to make the fundamental changes needed to save Somalia from itself. Foreign donors are running out of patience in the face of continual theft of foreign aid and money intended for government services (health, security, infrastructure and so on). As a practical matter there is no single Somalia but dozens of heavily armed clans that consider themselves sovereign and entitled to grab what they can any way they can. The current Somali government budget is $216 million and largely comes from foreign aid donors. Because most of this budget is still stolen by senior government officials most foreign aid (over a billion dollars a year) is spent by foreign aid officials in Somalia. The government does not like this because that aid is much more difficult to steal.

Boko Haram Kills Nine Chadian Soldiers in Ambush
[AnNahar] Nine Chadian soldiers were killed and 16 maimed after being ambushed by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters in northeastern Nigeria, the Chadian army said Thursday.

A military front man said fighting took place on Wednesday about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the town of Malam Fatori, which Niger said was retaken by regional forces fighting the Islamist holy warriors earlier this week.

"Elements of the Chad-Niger (military alliance) were killed in a pocket of resistance," Colonel Azem Bermandoa Agouna told AFP.

"After heavy fighting, the armed forces of Chad and Niger totally cleaned up the zone," the front man added.

The allied troops killed "more than 100" members of Boko Haram, a ruthless fundamentalist sect that has killed at least 13,000 people since it launched an insurgency in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
in 2009, according to a military statement said.

Large quantities of equipment were also seized by the soldiers.

When the joint force took Malam Fatori on Tuesday, they were unopposed because Boko Haram fighters had gone, but some of the Islamists remained in the vicinity, Agouna said.

A violent skirmish took place on Wednesday between Malam Fatori and the border town of Bosso in Niger, a high-ranking officer in Niger's army reported at the time, giving no further details.

Niger's army was due to release casualty figures, he added.

That battle left "many maimed on the Chadian and Nigerien sides", according to a humanitarian relief official, who added that "deaths and arrests" were likely among Boko Haram's ranks.

The capture of Malam Fatori was crucial for the regional coalition, which also includes Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
and Benin, and has finally moved into Nigeria as outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
came under mounting criticism for the failure of a powerful army to defeat the Islamists.

Malam Fatori, close to Nigeria's northeast border, had become known as Boko Haram's main refuge in the region whenever its fighters fell back after defeats.

Chadian and Nigerien troops made the town a primary target once they entered Nigeria on March 8, marking the start of foreign military operations on the home territory of the Islamist sect.

Boko Haram has undertaken several cross-border raids.

After the swift capture of the Nigerian town of Damasak, coalition troops have pressed on eastwards close to the border with Niger, successively taking Gachagar, Talagam, Abadam, then Malam Fatori.

Chadian troops, active around the Lake Chad region where the Nigerian border converges with those of Chad, Cameroon and Niger, are also operating on a second front, based on Cameroonian territory.

519 dead in 2 weeks of violence in Yemen: UN

In a statement on Thursday, UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos said that 1,700 people have also been maimed during festivities between rival groups in Yemen

"for the safety of civilians caught in the middle."

Amos said that tens of thousands of people have fled their homes due to the festivities in the country, with some of them crossing the sea to Djibouti and Somalia.

"Those engaged in fighting must ensure that hospitals, schools, camps for refugees and those internally displaced and civilian infrastructure, especially in populated areas, are not targeted or used for military purposes," Amos said.

Amos did not specify how many people were killed as a result of the Saudi aggression against Yemen.

Bomb explosion kills 5 in northeast Nigeria
[Iran Press TV] At least five people have been killed and 15 others maimed in an kaboom in the northeastern Nigerian city of Gombe, witnesses say.

Muhammad Garkuwa, a drivers' union official, said that the bomb went off near a bus station on Thursday.

"The kaboom was from an explosive left by a woman in her handbag beside a bus waiting to convey passengers to Jos," he said.

Other witnesses also made similar remarks about the incident.

Yusuf Darazo, who sells food near the bus station, said, "No-one suspected her. People around assumed she was making calls before the bus filled up."

"She disappeared and the bag went kaboom! soon after, setting the bus on fire. I saw five dead and several injured," he said.

No group has yet grabbed credit for the attack, although Takfiri

Al Hijra Sets Camp In Tanzania
[Intel Briefs] Al Hijra -- the Kenyan arm of al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
-- has extended its terror tentacles and has now established bases in Tanzania. Al Hijra has grown in strength and it now counts over 1000 fighters within its rank, thereby signifying that its recruitment campaign has been somewhat successful. Al Hijra has pivoted its recruitment propaganda on Moslem marginalization, social stagnation and economic disempowerment thus appealing to many young employed Moslems.

Moreover, government inadequacies in both Kenya and Tanzania have allowed al Hijra to grow and operate within their nations. Al Hijra has even released a nasheed which mentions that Jannah (paradise) is only a taxi ride away, thus betraying their intentions to conduct attacks in both Kenya and Tanzania using jacket wallahs driving VBIEDs.

Al Hijra is mainly funded by foreign Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
with al-Shabaab providing them with terrorist expertise. Its core of jihadists is ideologically committed to waging jihad in Kenya and Tanzania. Moreover, al Muhajiroun (al Qaeda's official branch in East Africa) has also assisted al Hijra in operationalizing its cells in Tanzania. al Muhajiroun has also called on the Tanzanian government to protect Moslem holy mans or else suffer the consequences. Both al Muhajiroun and al Hijra are closely tied to Ahmad Iman Ali.

Yemen Rebels Push Deep into Hadi's Former Refuge Aden
[AnNahar] Rebels battled their way into the heart of Yemen's main southern city Aden where fighting raged Thursday in the former stronghold of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who has fled overseas.

The advance comes despite a week of Saudi-led air strikes aimed at preventing the fall of Hadi, who has taken refuge in Riyadh.

The Iran-backed Houthis and allied army units loyal to former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh

were advancing on the presidential palace after seizing the key district of Khor Maksar, home to several foreign consulates and U.N. offices, residents said.

At least 19 people were killed on Wednesday in festivities pitting the rebels against armed residents and local militia, officials said.

Hadi fled to the southern city from the rebel-held capital in February.

But he went into hiding last week as the rebels advanced on his last remaining bastion and later resurfaced in the Saudi capital.

His aides have said he has no immediate plan to return to Aden.

border, its first casualties since launching an operation against Iranian catspaws a week ago.

The Border Guards at a post in the kingdom's southwestern Asir region came "under fire from a mountainous interior zone," the interior ministry said in a statement on the official Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi Arabia has 150,000 troops and 100 warplanes assigned to the Yemen operation, according to a Saudi adviser, but says it has no plan for now to send ground forces into the neighboring country.

Last Friday a U.S. defense official said two Saudi pilots who ejected from their F-15 jet off Yemen's coast had been rescued.

The Saudi-led coalition is aiming to defeat the Houthis who seized power in the capital Sanaa in February, and who Riyadh feared would take over the entire country and shift it into Iran's orbit.

In Jazan region, a border district adjacent to Asir, the closure of 49 schools will be extended for a week beginning Sunday as a "precautionary measure" because of their location near the Yemeni frontier, the Saudi Press Agency said, citing an education official.

And it says in a conversation with an undercover investigator about the women's willingness to fight, she pulled a knife and asked, "Why can't we be bad b-----s?"

The complaint unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn names Velentzas and her former roommate, Asia Siddiqui, as the targets of an undercover investigation into the thwarted homegrown terror plot.

The women, both from Queens, were held without bail Thursday after a brief court appearance where they spoke only to say they understood the charges against them. Velentzas wore a hijab and a dark dress, and Siddiqui donned a green T-shirt with a long-sleeved black shirt underneath and a dark long skirt.

"My client will enter a plea of not guilty, if and when there is an indictment. I know it's a serious case, but we're going to fight it out in court," said Siddiqui's lawyer, Thomas Dunn. Velentzas' attorney had no comment.

The women repeatedly expressed support for violent jihad during conversations with the undercover, who secretly recorded them, according to the complaint.

In 2009, Siddiqui, 31, wrote a poem in a magazine published by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
that declared there is "no excuse to sit back and wait -- for the skies rain martyrdom," Sherlocks wrote in court papers. Velentzas, 28, called the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now sometimes referred to as Mister Bones...
one of her heroes and said she and Siddiqui were "citizens of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
," they said.

Since 2014, the pair plotted to build an bomb to use in a terrorist attack on American soil, the complaint says. They "researched and acquired some of the components of a boom-mobile, like the one used in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; a fertilizer bomb, like the one used in the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City; and a pressure cooker bomb, like the one used in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing," authorities wrote.

After two New York City coppers were bumped off in a patrol car in December, Velentzas told an undercover officer that the deaths showed it was easy to kill a police officer, according to the complaint. She said killing an officer was easier than buying food "because sometimes one has to wait in line to buy food," according to the complaint.

After the undercover officer mentioned that 25,000 officers had turned out for the first of the funerals for the two officers, Velentzas "complimented" the undercover for coming up with an attractive target and considered whether the other funeral was an appropriate target, according to the complaint.

The complaint suggests that authorities decided to make the arrests after Siddiqui came into "possession of multiple propane gas tanks, as well as instructions for how to transform propane tanks into bombs," and told the undercover she was "disinclined" to talk about her plans.

During a search of the defendants' homes early Thursday, agents recovered items including three gas tanks, a pressure cooker, fertilizer, handwritten notes on recipes for bomb making and jihadist literature, court papers say. They also found two machetes and two daggers.

"It is very, very important to note: there was never any imminent threat to our fellow New Yorkers," Mayor Bill de Blasio said when asked about the case. The plot, he added, "was undercut before it could turn into something dangerous."

Neighbors of Siddiqui said she and her brother lived in the basement of a red-brick three floor house, owned by their parents, who didn't live there.

"She was quiet, and I never thought she could do this," said Mohammad Shahidul Haque, a retired hospital lab tech.
Reuters adds:
Noelle Velentzas, 28, and Asia Siddiqui, 31, plotted to hit police, government or military targets based on their "violent jihadist beliefs," according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn.

The women, former roommates in the city borough of Queens, had researched how to build an bomb and had read textbooks on electricity and watched online videos about soldering, it said.

The complaint said Siddiqui had been in contact with al Qaeda members and Velentzas was Facebook friends with Tairod Pugh, a U.S. Air Force veteran charged with attempting to aid Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. [AnNahar] A guard at the Lebanese parliament, who has been recently placed in durance vile

for suspected ties with Israel, was proved to be innocent but Sherlocks found links between his wife and the Mossad, al-Joumhouria newspaper reported on Thursday.

The unidentified guard was apprehended several weeks ago after police raided his house and took two laptops that belong to him and his wife, it said.

But Sherlocks found out that the unidentified officer was not a suspect and instead discovered that the Mossad had recruited his wife around four years ago and tasked her with photographing buildings and institutions that lie near the parliament in downtown Beirut, al-Joumhouria said.

The suspected spy was recruited through social media networks and payed a small sum of money. She is facing trial.

The daily quoted security sources as saying that the Mossad's real intention behind its collaboration with the woman was to reach her husband.

Scores of suspected spies, including a butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker, a mobile phone salesman and a retired general, were tossed into the calaboose in recent years as part of a long-running probe by Lebanese intelligence into Israeli sleeper cells.

Three months ago, Hizbullah

Hizbullah has rarely been infiltrated by foreign intelligence agencies.

Palestinians Push Back IS in Damascus Camp
[AnNahar] Paleostinian fighters and Syrian rebels retook control Thursday of large parts of a refugee camp in Damascus that had been seized by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group jihadists, a monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a number of gangs in the Yarmuk camp in south Damascus "were able to regain control over all of the areas that IS had taken over."

The jihadists had overrun the camp on Wednesday, raising fears for thousands of civilians inside and giving IS a potential beachhead inside Syria's capital.

But armed Paleostinian groups, backed by local rebels, launched a fightback later in the day.

"Syrian rebel groups entered the camp and helped the Paleostinians push back IS in fierce festivities," said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Observatory.

Anwar Abdel Hadi, director of political affairs for the Paleostine Liberation Organisation in Damascus, said IS had been pushed "to the periphery" of the camp.

He said Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis, a group loyal to Paleostinian movement Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, had clashed with IS overnight.

Six people were killed and 17 injured, he said, but he could not provide details on the toll.

The Britannia-based Observatory said IS still controlled "some areas" in the camp and put the corpse count at three.

Al-Nusra Front Seizes Post on Syria-Jordan Border
[AnNahar] Rebels backed by Syria's al-Qaeda affiliate seized control Wednesday of the last border crossing with Jordan that had been under regime control, dealing a major blow to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
"Armed groups, joined today by al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
Front, took over the Nasib border point from regime soldiers" on the Syrian side of the frontier, said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

A coalition of rebel groups had launched the offensive Tuesday, and Al-Nusra joined them late Wednesday.

A pro-regime security source said the "Syrian army withdrew from the Nasib border crossing."

Abdel Rahman said the takeover meant there was "no longer a regime presence on the border with Jordan."

Shortly afterwards, regime helicopters began dropping barrel bombs -- crude weapons made of oil drums or barrels stuffed with explosives -- on rebel positions near Nasib, said the Observatory director.

There was no immediate information on any casualties.

Jordan had said earlier it closed the crossing, which leads to Syria's Daraa province, to both travellers and goods.

It was a "preventive measure to safeguard the lives and security of travellers due to the fighting underway on the other side of the border," Interior Minister Hussein Majali told AFP.

Rebels have been gaining territory in the southern province of Daraa, cradle of the 2011 Arab Spring-inspired uprising against Assad that triggered Syria's civil war.

Last week they seized full control of the ancient town of Bosra al-Sham, pushing pro-regime forces out after days of heavy fighting.

In January rebels -- including Al-Nusra Front -- seized an important government army base in the province.

Syrian regime reels as rebels score key wins
[ARABNEWS] Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
's regime was reeling Thursday from a series of military setbacks after rebels seized a major picturesque provincial capital and a key border post in less than a week.

Experts said the losses were a reflection of the regime's weariness after more than four years of civil war and increasing regional efforts to counter Iran's backing for Assad.

The taking by rebels late Wednesday of the last Syrian border crossing with Jordan in regime hands and of picturesque provincial capital Idlib on Saturday have dealt major blows to the regime, experts said.

And Wednesday's seizure of parts of a Paleostinian refugee camp inside Damascus by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group has shown the increasing reach of a jihadist force already in control of large parts of Syria.

"It's indicative of a problem the regime has that has been increasingly obvious -- it has a manpower shortage," said Noah Bonsey, a Syria expert at the International Crisis Group.

"It has constraints on how much ground it can gain and how much it can hold outside of its core areas," he said.

Rebels seized the border crossing with Jordan after heavy fighting on Wednesday, leaving the regime with no presence on a key frontier.

The loss was only the latest for the regime in the southern Daraa province, after rebels took the ancient town of Bosra Al-Sham last week and seized an important army base in January.

In northwestern Syria, meanwhile, the regime's loss of Idlib to Syria's Al-Qaeda affiliate, Al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
Front, made it the second picturesque provincial capital in rebel hands after IS-controlled Raqqa.

After heavy street fighting and regime air strikes that left at least 130 reported dead, Al-Nusra was able to consolidate its hold over a large area of Syria bordering The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
by taking the city. Bonsey said the losses in Daraa and Idlib were part of "a larger pattern" of the regime being pushed out of areas where it cannot commit significant forces or count on backing from ally Tehran or the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement.

"The regime is increasingly dependent on Hezbollah, imported muscle and non-Syrian militias facilitated by Iran to accomplish military objectives," he said. "So in places where you see Hezbollah and Iran willing to invest significant resources, the regime is able to gain or keep some ground," as it has done in areas southwest of Damascus, he said.

"But in places like Idlib, Hezbollah and Iran are not willing to invest with boots on the ground."

But increasing support for rebels from allied countries is another key factor behind recent gains, experts said.
