Navy Commander at GITMO Fired; Probes Involves Alleged Affair, Suspicious Death
[ABSee News] The officer in charge of the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has been fired for a “loss of confidence” after he allegedly had an affair with a woman whose husband was recently found dead in the waters off the base.

Tur, 42, was found dead in the waters off the base on the morning of January 10, a day after he had been reported missing, said Navy Region Southeast spokesman Mike Andrews. A U.S. official said there was no obvious cause of death.

The official said that information came to light during the investigation into Tur’s death that led the Navy to relieve Nettleton of command. Officials said the investigation found that Nettleton had allegedly been having an affair with Tur’s wife Lara, the director of the Fleet and Family Services Center at the base.
Ms. Tur where is your husband these days? Oh, he's floating around here somewhere.

Border Patrol in Shoot Out with Drug Mules, One Mule Dead
One person is dead after a Border Patrol shooting in South Texas.

A federal law enforcement official briefed on the incident says one person was shot and killed on the U.S. side of the border when agents came under fire Wednesday morning.

The official was not authorized to disclose details of the investigation and spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

It is unclear if the person was armed.

The Border Patrol says in a statement that agents were investigating suspected drug smuggling near Roma, Texas, and encountered a group of people in the desert hauling packages of drugs when the shooting occurred.

The Border Patrol has been widely criticized for its use of deadly force policies. The agency has pledged to be more transparent about shooting incidents.

Arabia
No religious or personal birthday celebrations allowed
[ARABNEWS] The Health Ministry has instructed all public hospitals and health facilities not to allow celebration of "religious or personal" birthdays inside their compounds. The ministry's religious awareness department said Sunday that the circular was based on a religious edict issued by the Dar Al-Ifta 27 years ago.

Dar Al-Ifta had given the verdict in 1409H after it came to know that a government hospital allowed its non-Moslem employees to celebrate Christmas in the housing compound for nurses.

Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
does not allow the celebration of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) considering it as an innovation in religion.

Sheikh Mohammed Al-Oraifi, a Saudi scholar, said Moslems are not allowed to greet non-Moslems on their religious occasions like Christmas. "If they celebrate the birth of God's son and you greet them...it means you endorse their faith," he said.

Russian Spy Ship's Arrival in Cuba Raises Eyebrows
[ABSee News] The historic U.S.-Cuba talks are under way and they may have attracted a new addition to the Havana port.

The Russian spy ship Viktor Leonov CCB-175 parked there Tuesday, laden with high-tech software, radar and 30-millimeter cannon and anti-aircraft guns, replacing a cruise ship that had been there the day before.

Normally, the surveillance ship travels up and down the American Eastern Seaboard in international waters, with its radars pointed in the direction of the United States.

Ukrainian military leaders desparately try to restore futile situation in Donetsk

Corrected identification of one of the captured Ukrainian officers and his unit.

Rantburg.com

As news of the tactical defeat of Ukrainian forces holding the airport begins to leak out from official and unofficial Ukrainian sources, stories are starting to emerge about a Ukrainian military leadership desperate to deal with a sharp reverse at a key position, hastily throwing newly formed combat units into combat, and on the same day, having them utterly destroyed by rebel fighters.

Two or three days ago, a video was posted which showed Donetsk president Aleksandr Zakharchenko conducting a press conference with three Ukrainian soldiers who were captured as they attempted to mount a relief operation at the new terminal, and to the Putilovsky bridge near Spartak.

The small group sent to the airport was apparently part of a larger one, said to be an element of the 95th "Zhitomir" Independent Airmobile Brigade which included a Ukrainian colonel, now identified as Colonel Oleg Kuzmin, who was part of the task force sent to evacuate Ukrainian wounded at the new terminal. The only problem was that most of the Ukrainian soldiers holding the new terminal at the airport had been given safe passage back to their lines almost four days before, while the rest that stayed were so badly wounded, they could not be moved. At least one Ukrainian officer had fled the new terminal.

The relief operation was mounted as an icy fog descended on the region with visibility down to about 20 meters. The relief column included a number of armored vehicles and at least one rifle company, said to be an element of the 81st Mechanized Rifle Brigade.

According to one of the captured soldiers, his unit was ordered to go to a location between the old terminal and the new terminal where they could expect to pick up wounded, but instead were met with rebel fighters. According to Zakharchenko and the soldier, the entire rifle company was killed after four hours of combat with rebel forces, save for about 10 effectives.

Zakharchenko said, without further elaborating, "I couldn't imagine an entire tank battalion being destroyed within a day..." Presumably, according to Zakharchenko, a total of 31 tanks were destroyed or disabled in the Ukrainian counterattack.

As previously described, a second armored unit, two tanks and one BMP Infantry Fighting Vehicle, had been sent to the Putilovsky bridge, after being told they were part of a larger counterattack. One soldier was apparently riding aboard the BMP when it threw a track, and the soldier was forced to bail out. Zakharchenko said in the press conference that the entire reason for the Putilovskiy bridge operation was to provide video evidence that the Ukrainian Army had matters in hand at the airport, and that the airport was surrounded.

A Facebook page posting by a Ukrainian identified as George Tuka said that the Ukrainian military leadership has attempted to develop a counterattack against the rebels using a deep flanking attack intended to push rebel forces back three to four kilometers back from the airport.

According to the post, part of the counterattack was successful. Rebel media described the same attack on Tuesday that was pushed into Donetsk city into Petrovsky district from Maryinka and Alexandrovka before it was stopped by rebel forces. Tuka said that part of the counterattack was successful.

Tuka said that the Ukrainian attack failed because of an enormous number of vehicle breakdowns. According to Tuka, of 20 armored vehicles tasked as part of a separate operation, only two were in operation. The rest became inoperable. Tuka said that the vehicle breakdowns were the main reason for the failed counterattack on the airport.

Ukrainian military journalists Dmitri Tymchuik and Roman Burko said that the rebel operations were a diversion from rebel offensive operations in Lugansk, further east. Tymchuk said that a relief column of Russian troops consisting of 12 tanks and a mobile tank workshop were sent into the area near Spartak as of January 20th.

Burko dismissed the Ukrainian counterattack as an "unsuccessful foggy sortie".

A separate Ukrainian website said that the airport has fallen to the rebels with a total of losses amounting to 37 killed. A separate tweet from a Ukrainian doctor identified as Vlad Sergeev, said to be detached to an unidentified Ukrainian National Guard unit, said that 12 Ukrainian special forces operators, affectionately known as "Cyborgs", were killed defending the new terminal. Another 15 special forces operators were captured.

One of the rebels' top commanders, identified by his call sign "Motorola" said that his units found 30 Ukrainian soldiers buried in the rubble at the new terminal, but only 14 were still alive. "Motorola" said that all the soldiers carried on them a solar powered recording device which feature homilies spoken in English and Russian by American Baptist pastor Charles Stanley, which "Motorola" said were used the "hypnotize" the soldiers about the fear of death.

Attacks on Peski and Avdievka

According to rebel media, Peski is already in the hands of the rebels. It was last reported that much of the fighting the night before was basic artillery duels, and that rebels had seized about 60 percent of the village.

According to Ukrainian tweets, Russian tanks were attempting to encircle Peski as a part of their counter operations by going to Netaylove, which is about four kilometers due west from Peski. Rebel media has made no mention of that maneuver, however.

A separate part of the rebel campaign to take the airport included taking the much larger town of Avdievka. So far, it was has been reported in media media that rebel forces have entered the town and are currently engaged in combat with Ukrainian forces there.

Rebel media also reported that Ukrainian artillery attacks continue throughout the city, including artillery hits in Oktyabrsky and Kievsky districts. By nightfall, Ukrainian artillery attacks continued.

Combat operations in northern Lugansk

Rebel forces continued to try to force the issue at highway 3103 by hitting Ukrainian police checkpoints all along the route, according to rebel media.

Tymchuk said that rebels are using as many as 25 D-30 122mm howitzers and ten rocket artillery launchers fired on not only on the checkpoints but on Ukrainian troops concentrations. Rebel artillery are also hitting routes used by the Ukrainian to supply and switch forces in the region.

Tymchuk wrote on his website that Russian were already moving large amounts of ammunition west towards Donetsk through border points in Lugansk.

Burko hinted, without elaborating that rebel forces now occupying the North Donetsk riverine town of Slavyanoserbsk, were having little success in expanding their zone of operation. Previously rebel combat units had been able to conduct small scale attacks on outlying settlements, but now, those units are no longer able to continue those operations.

US wants to dominate world, says Moscow
[ARABNEWS] Russia on Wednesday responded disparagingly to President Barack Obama
If you like your coverage you can keep it...
's annual State of the Union address, claiming it showed that the United States wanted to dominate world affairs.

"Americans have set a course for confrontation," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told news hounds.

"Obama's address yesterday shows that there's just one thing at the heart of (their) philosophy: 'We are number one' and the rest should acknowledge that."

"This is a bit out of date and does not correspond to modern realities," Russia's top diplomat added in televised remarks.

"It shows that the United States wants to dominate the world," he said, adding that "being first among equals" was not enough for Washington. In his keynote speech on Tuesday, Obama said that "big nations can't bully small," a reference to Russia's annexation of Crimea and support for pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. He praised US policies toward the Kremlin over Ukraine, saying they left Moscow isolated and its economy in tatters.

Lavrov struck a condescending note, saying attempts to isolate Russia would fail and Washington's "aggressive foreign policy" would one day become a thing of the past.

"I think it will pass," he said.

But at the same time Lavrov appeared to commend Obama for what he called Washington's growing realisation that IS gunnies presented the most serious threat in Syria.

"The task of fighting these gunnies has been called the most important one," Lavrov said.

The Communist International, abbreviated as Comintern and also known as the Third International (1919–1943), was an international communist organization initiated in Moscow during March 1919. The International intended to fight "by all available means, including armed force, for the overthrow of the international bourgeoisie and for the creation of an international Soviet republic as a transition stage to the complete abolition of the State."

Russia has 9,000 troops in Ukraine, Poroshenko tells Davos
[REUTERS] Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko accused Russia on Wednesday of sending 9,000 troops to back separatist rebels in the east of his country, and the IMF chief said she backed extra financial help for Kiev as the conflict inflicts severe economic damage.

Moscow challenged Poroshenko to present facts to prove his allegations. However, he won support from NATO, which said the amount of heavy military equipment used by Russian troops in eastern Ukraine had increased, and the alliance repeated its call for the forces to withdraw.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Poroshenko made one of Kiev's boldest assertions yet that Russia's military is directly involved in a conflict in which more than 4,800 people have died since last April.

Russian troops were backed by a range of heavy weapons, including tanks, heavy artillery and armored vehicles, he said, adding: "If this is not aggression, what is aggression?"

Poroshenko also called on Moscow to comply with a peace plan agreed in Minsk, Belarus, last September between Ukraine, Russia and pro-Russian separatist leaders to end the conflict.

"The solution is very simple -- stop supplying weapons ... withdraw the troops and close the border," he said. "If you want to discuss something different, it means you are not for peace, you are for war."

Saying "talaq" thrice consecutively is against Sunnah: CII chairman
[NATION.PK] The Council of Islamic Ideology today recommended punishment for people who say 'divorce' three times consecutively.

"Saying the word talaq thrice consecutively is against the Sunnah," Mohammad Khan Sherani said, who chaired the meeting. The council proposed numerous resolutions regarding the matter.

Men easily can obtain a divorce by declaring their intention three times. A woman, however, usually needs the pronouncement of a Moslem judge. Religious experts and researchers were present during the meeting. The council had suggested that the divorce sought by a woman would go into effect if the husband fails to respond within three months.

The recommendations sparked a quarrel as religious scholars criticized the Council for Islamic Ideology of misinterpreting the Shariat laws.

This Tilt-Rotor Aircraft Could Be The Future Of The US Army's Helicopter Fleet
Bell's V-280, which combines a combat helicopter's fuselage with tilt-rotors, would basically be a Black Hawk that can adjust its thrust to fly like a fixed-wing aircraft once it's airborne.
Once again the Army wants to build an advanced helicopter. Like the Comanche, which failed. And the Arapaho, which failed. And the Cheyenne, which failed. Each cost billions of dollars in R & D. So pardon me if I'm a little skeptical about the V-280; we've seen this movie.
