Army denies any looting as it takes Central Bank in Benghazi from Ansar Al-Sharia
[Libya Herald] Claims that the Central Bank of Libya branch in Benghazi was attacked and looted today by the Libyan National Army (LNA) have been denied by both the Libyan government in Beida and LNA itself.

Pro-Dawn media stated that Operation Dignity had robbed the bank. One media source stated that the continuing General National Congress had suspended it participation in the UN-brokered dialogue in protest.

The LNA's Chief of Staff has denied this. In a statement published by the government's information board it said that the bank was now "under the control and protected by the 204 Tank Battalion which is guarding vital installations and facilities".

The LNA says it took the bank this morning from Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
which, it stated, had occupied the building and was using it as a base to attack the army. It claims that there were Ansar snipers in the building when it was captured. Some were killed, others escaped, it said. No numbers have been given.

According to the Chief of Staff front man Colonel Ahmed Mismari, reports that the bank had been looted were "completely baseless".

The army also said that there was money in the bank when it entered the downtown building near the port and the south courthouse but did know if belonged to the Central Bank or had been accumulated by Ansar. It did not state the amount nor is it not clear if the money is still in the bank or has been taken elsewhere.

The attack on the building appears to have been part of yesterday's and today's LNA operation in central Benghazi to clear it of Ansar forces. The army says it is now in full control of the area.

It also claims that it made considerable "efforts" to keep damage to the bank building to a minimum. However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
the entire area is already massively damaged.

Boko Haram 'leader' claims massacre in Baga
[FRANCE24] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
leader Abubakar Shekau on Tuesday claimed an attack on the northeastern Nigerian town of Baga in which scores of non-combatants were killed when the snuffies seized a multinational military base.

The Death Eaters, who invaded Baga at the start of the year, razed many buildings and homes in the week that followed, shooting civilians as they tried to flee, witnesses said.

Some local officials put the corpse count as high as 2,000, although the military said it was 150.

The video was in the trademark Boko Haram style, with the bearded man claiming to be Shekau in combat fatigues talking in the northern Nigerian Hausa language surrounded by masked gunnies. The military says it killed the real Shekau.

"We are the ones that carried out the attack and it is just the tip of the iceberg," the man says. "There are more coming." Commenting on weapons seized from Baga, he says they are "enough to annihilate Nigeria."

Soldiers fled the area after the nearby army base, which is the headquarters of a multinational force comprising troops from Chad, Niger and Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, by Lake Chad was overrun. Chad and Cameroon are being drawn into the fight against Boko Haram, but mistrust has hampered cooperation.

The main claiming to be Shekau taunted the leaders of Cameroon, Niger and Chad: Paul Biya, Mahamadou Issoufou and Idris Deby.

He also made it clear he doesn't care for either Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
, a southern Christian, or his main opposition contender in Feb. 14 presidential elections Muhammadu Buhari, a northern Moslem.

"Jonathan you are in trouble," he says. "And Buhari, do you think he is a true Moslem? He's an infidel."

Yemen leader and Shiite militia 'strike deal'
[FRANCE24] Yemen's president and Shiite militia reached a nine-point agreement Wednesday under which the militia are to withdraw from government buildings in return for concessions over a draft constitution, state media reported.

The Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to Americaâ¢, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militia vowed to vacate the presidential palace, which it seized on Tuesday, and to free President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi's chief of staff as part of a deal also agreed by other factions, the Saba news agency, which published the text of the document, reported.

In return, it will now be "possible to amend" a draft constitution stipulating the division of Yemen into six federal regions that the Houthis opposed, the agency said.

"The draft constitution should be agreed upon by all factions," according to the deal, and Yemen "will be a federal state in accordance with the outcome of the national dialogue".

National talks were held in Yemen as stipulated by a UN-backed agreement that eased former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
from office in 2012 after a year of deadly protests.

Turning the country into a federal state was one outcome of the national talks.

The agreement also pledges to treat Houthis, known officially as Ansarullah, and other disgruntled factions equally in the allocation of public posts.

"Ansarullah and peaceful Southern Movement and all other political factions deprived of equal representation in state institutions will have the right to be appointed in these institutions," the agreement said.

"These measures will be implemented immediately," it added.

The meeting with Hadi included his advisors who represent some of Yemen's factions, as well as Houthis.

The Houthis, friendly to Iran, swept into the capital four months ago and have emerged as the dominant force in the country. For now at least they appear to have decided to stop short of overthrowing Hadi, possibly preferring to exert control over a weakened leader rather than take on the burden of power

Yemen government agreeing to most Houthi militia demands, John Kerry says
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] The Yemen government is accepting some of the demands put forward by a rebel Shiite militia in a deal to end a political crisis, John Kerry, the US secretary of state, has said.

Mr Kerry told reporters it was his understanding that the government of Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, the president, is "going to accept if not all, most of, the objections that the Houthis had," as news of the deal emerged in Sanaa.

It was reported Mr Hadi and the country's powerful Shiite militia agreed to end a deadly confrontation that had raised fears the impoverished but strategic country might descend into chaos.

The militia, known as Houthis, seized almost full control of the capital in September and have fought pitched battles with government forces this week as they continued to press for more political power.

The unrest has raised deep international concern, with the UN Security Council condemning the attacks and backing Mr Hadi as Yemen's "legitimate authority".

Under a nine-point deal, the militia agreed to withdraw from government buildings they seized this week in return for concessions over a disputed draft constitution, Saba, the state news agency, said.

The Houthis pledged to vacate the presidential palace, a day after seizing it, and to free Mr Hadi's chief of staff, who was abducted Saturday.

In return, it would now be "possible to amend" the draft constitution dividing Yemen into six federal regions, which the Houthis opposed, said Saba.

"The draft constitution should be agreed upon by all factions," according to the deal, and Yemen "will be a federal state in accordance with the outcome of the national dialogue".

The agreement also pledges to treat Houthis, known officially as Ansarullah, and other disgruntled factions equally in the allocation of public posts.

"Ansarullah and peaceful Southern Movement and all other political factions deprived of equal representation in state institutions will have the right to be appointed in these institutions," it said.

On Tuesday, the militia seized Mr Hadi's offices at the presidential palace and attacked his residence, in what officials said was an attempted coup.

There were no signs of violence Wednesday, after at least 35 people were killed and 94 wounded in the two previous days.

Bangla: Blast while making bomb hurts kids
[Dhaka Tribune] Three people including two children were maimed in a kaboom in the capital's Lalbagh area yesterday, while the police also recovered a huge quantity of gunpowder and 130 crude bombs from a mess belonging to Shibir cadres in Mohakhali.

The bomb went kaboom! at around 3pm on the second floor of a house in Dhakeswari Road, injuring three people: Mahbubur Rahman Bappi,
You betcher sweet Bappi...
25, his niece Happy Akther Sumi, 14, and a former neighbour Samaran Ahmed Ripon, 6.

All three are now undergoing treatment at the burn and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Sumi, an eighth grader of Azimpur Girls High School, said she was watching television after lunch when her uncle Bappi was doing something while sitting on the floor.

"Suddenly I heard a big bang and the entire room was engulfed in smoke and seconds after that another sound of kaboom came from the room and I cannot remember anything after that."

Bappi's right wrist was blown off in the kaboom while Sumi and Ripon received injuries in their eyes.

Sumi's mother Jhumur said she was cooking in the kitchen when she heard the sound. She, however, did not make any comment on her brother Bappi's involvement in bomb making.

Lipi Akhter, mother of Ripon, said they live in the city's Elephant Road and her husband Nizamuddin Bacchu has a pet shop at Kataban.

She said her family used to live in Lalbagh a couple of months back when they met Jhumur's family.

"Yesterday around 12pm Sumi came to our flat after her coaching classes and wanted to take Ripon with her to their flat. Although I refused, Ripon began to cry and insisted on going with Sumi and I let him go,"

Lipi said she later came to know that her son had been admitted to the DMCH. Visiting the site of the kaboom, this correspondent found that the two-room flat was left in ruins with the glass-windows broken and the steel door twisted. The entire flat smelled of gunpowder.

Sufia Begum, owner of the house, said Jhumur and her husband Abdul Hakim had rented the flat just a month ago for Tk8,000 and they paid Tk20,000 in advance.

"We have often visited their flat but never found anything suspicious," Sufia said.

She added that Jhumur claimed that her husband was a private car driver and that four members used to live in the flat: Bappi, Jhumur, Sumi and Hakim.

"I often found Hakim out of the house at 7pm and he came back about 11pm.

"Yesterday, when we had just had our lunch, I heard a sound of kaboom and I found Bappi in an unconscious state with his wrist blown off in the blast."

Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Lalbagh Division of police, said Bappi is a well known bomb maker in the capital's Nilkhet and Kataban area and better known as Boma Bappi.

"Inspecting the spot, we have come to know that the kaboom happened while making bombs and we have detained a total of 10 persons for interrogation," he says.

A case will be filed shortly in connection with the incident.

A source in the police and locals of Kataban area said Bappi is a secretary of Chhatra Dal of New Market thana unit.

When Jhumur's family had been living in Kataban slum a few months back, local residents reportedly forced Bappi to leave the place as they came to know that he was a bomb maker.

I think the old commissioner missed an "o" in his name (Booma Bappi). Only in Bangla can it be spun like bomb making is a true career path. Maybe their unemployment is really lower than what they let on?

Sixth Person Charged in Foiled Belgium Terror Plot
[AnNahar] Belgian authorities have charged a sixth person with terrorism following a series of raids in Belgium last week that foiled a plot to kill police, the prosecutor's office said Wednesday.

The man, identified as Abdelmoumaim H. and who is in his 20s, was nabbed
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
Tuesday and charged with "participating in the activities of a terrorist group," the prosecutors said.

Five other people who were picked up during the January 15 raids face the same count of terrorism, including three Belgian nationals in their 20s who were placed in jug.

The Brussels court prolonged for a month the custody of those three suspects, identified Wednesday as Marouan E., Mohammed A. and Billel H.

The prosecutor's office said the suspects are also charged with violating weapons laws, while Marouan E. is additionally accused of premeditated armed rebellion in a group.

Belgian media identified him as Marouan El Bali, 25.

During the police raid on a hideout in the eastern town of Verviers, terror suspects Sofiane A., a dual Belgian-Moroccan national, and Khalid B., a Belgian citizen were killed. Both were in their 20s.

Belgian media said El Bali, who is suspected of providing logistics support to the cell, was detained during the raid on the house in Verviers.

He has denied the accusations and his lawyer said the young man, who lives in Brussels, was just visiting a friend, according to Belgian media.

In the house in Verviers, the authorities found a passport of a Dutch national, Zaiud K., and "the information was handed over to the Dutch authorities who opened" their own case, the prosecutor's office said.

Dutch authorities said Tuesday police in the city of Utrecht raided the family home of a young man believed to have links to the cell dismantled in Belgium.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
he is thought to have fled Belgium for Spain or La Belle France.

Spanish media have identified the suspect as Zaid Kouliss, who was reported missing by his parents last year.

Also, Belgium has asked for the extradition of two runaways arrested in La Belle France.

Another suspect who is an Algerian national, suspected of links to the cell, was arrested Saturday in Athens.

He has agreed to be extradited to Belgium, with Belgian prosecutors saying "his extradition could take place in the following days."

5th suspect detained in alleged Belgium terror plot
[Ynet] Belgian authorities say they have detained a fifth suspect linked to an alleged terror cell plotting a major attack on police, while three others have been remanded in jug.

The federal prosecutor's office said the fifth suspect was apprehended in Brussels Tuesday.

The three others were detained after a major anti-terror raid last week. They include a suspect who escaped alive from a firefight with police in eastern Verviers when two others were killed. Authorities claim they were part of a group only hours away from a major terror attack.

Another person suspected of being linked with jihadi Lions of Islam in Belgium was detained Sunday in Athens, Greece.

group in the country as well as two accomplices involved in recruiting and sending fighters to Syria, intelligence sources said today.

Authorities in South Asia are concerned about the rise of the krazed killer group in a region already beset by home-grown insurgencies fighting to topple local governments and set up strict Islamic rule.

Three intelligence sources, said the man, Yousaf al Salafi, was arrested in Lahore and confessed during interrogation that he represented IS in Pakistain.

'Al Salafi is a Pak Syrian who reached Pakistain through Turkey five months ago,' said one source. 'He crossed into Turkey from Syria and was caught there. Somehow he managed to escape and reached Pakistain to establish ISIS (IS).'

The account could not be independently verified.

The source said one of his accomplices, Hafiz Tayyab, was a prayer leader in Lahore and was involved in recruiting Paks and sending them to fight alongside Islamic State in Syria, charging IS about $600 per person.

Rifts among the Taliban and disputes about the future of the insurgency have contributed to the rise of Islamic State's popularity but security sources believe there are no operational links yet between IS and South Asia.

Kurdish Forces Cut Key Road in North Iraq Drive
[AnNahar] Kurdish forces launched an offensive against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) jihadist group on Wednesday, cutting a road linking two of the main areas it holds in north Iraq, officials said.

The Kurdistan Regional Security Council said peshmerga forces began a "large-scale offensive" around 7:00 am (0400 GMT).

The drive succeeded in cutting the road between IS's stronghold djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the first city the jihadists took in a June offensive, and Tal Afar, a large town to its west that the group has held for months, senior Kurdish security officials said.

A US-led anti-IS coalition announced it carried out six air strikes in the two areas from Tuesday to Wednesday -- three near Tal Afar and three near Mosul. It did not specify the exact locations targeted.

The strikes hit targets including vehicles, IS units, buildings, heavy weapons and a bridge, a statement said.

IS spearheaded a sweeping offensive that has overrun much of Iraq's Sunni Arab heartland since June, presenting both an opportunity for territorial expansion and a threat to the country's three-province autonomous Kurdish region.

Several Iraqi divisions collapsed in the early days of the offensive, clearing the way for the Kurds to take control of a swathe of disputed northern territory that they have long wanted to incorporate into their region over Baghdad's objections.

But after driving south towards Baghdad, IS then turned its attention to the Kurds, pushing them back toward their regional capital Arbil in a move that helped spark US strikes against the jihadists.

Backed by the strikes as well as international advisers and trainers, Kurdish forces have clawed back significant ground from IS.

The conflict seems set to redraw the internal boundaries of Iraq in favour of broader Kurdish control in the north.

Mossad, in rare move, denies it contradicted Netanyahu by lobbying against stiffer Iran sanction
US Secretary of State John Kerry had stated that an Israeli intelligence official said a tougher sanctions bill at this time would be “like throwing a grenade into the process.”

In an extremely unusual step, the Mossad issued a statement Thursday denying the intelligence agency was lobbying US lawmakers against stiffer Iran sanctions and saying that such legislation may lead to a collapse of talks with the Islamic Republic.
In other words John Kerry lied---hardly the first time

Israeli Gunfire Wounds Gaza Fisherman
[AnNahar] Israel's navy shot up fishing boats off the coast of the Gazoo Strip on Wednesday, wounding two Paleostinian fishermen, the Gazoo health ministry said.

The men, said to be in a moderate condition in hospital, were aboard two boats sailing off the strip's northern coast when an Israeli patrol boat fired at them early in the morning, ministry front man Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP.

The navy "identified several vessels deviating from the designated fishing zone in the northern Gazoo Strip," an Israeli military spokeswoman told AFP.

"Following calls on the suspects to halt, they fired warning shots in the air. The suspects continued to advance and the (navy) fired at one of the vessels. The suspects were identified returning to shore," she said.

Under the terms of Israel's eight-year blockade of the Paleostinian territory, Gazoo's fishermen have the right to trawl the waters up to six nautical miles off the coast.

But fishermen have said the Israeli navy opens fire before they reach that limit.

Around 4,000 fishermen work in Gazoo, but more than half live below the poverty line.

Two of the slain militants were identified as Yusop Sandatan and Usop Balaman. At least six militants were injured in the clashes in Sumisip town, a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, and the hometown of Mujiv Hataman, the regional governor.

Marine Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela said troops first clashed with the group of Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders Juhaibel Alamsirul, Radzmil Janatul and Pasil Bayali.

Army Arrests Man who 'Hosted' Jabal Mohsen Suicide Bombers
[AnNahar] The army on Wednesday announced arresting a man who had provided residence and food for the two jacket wallahs who carried out the deadly Jabal Mohsen twin attack, revealing that it has unveiled all details pertaining to the group that plotted the operation.

"As a result of the continued interrogation of the detainees, the Intelligence Directorate has managed to arrest Qassem Youssef Taljeh, who had received the two suicide bombers and provided them with accommodation and food," the army said in a statement.

"Two hours before the double bombing, Taljeh inspected the site and accompanied the two suicide bombers to carry out the operation," the army added.

It said Taljeh's arrest has allowed it to unveil "all details pertaining to the terrorist group, after most of the members were detained."

It said investigations are still underway under the supervision of the relevant judicial authorities.

On Thursday, the army said it had thwarted a plot to carry out a "series of suicide kabooms" in the wake of the Jabal Mohsen bombing.

group in the northeast, a monitoring group said on Wednesday, updating an earlier toll.

"The strikes hit a cattle market in the Tal Hamis area, which is controlled by IS," said the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a wide network of sources inside Syria.

Previously it had said 27 people were killed in the Tuesday raid.

Tal Hamis lies in Hasakeh province which is mainly controlled by Kurdish militia or regime troops, but where the jihadists hold some areas.

The pro-government newspaper Al-Watan said dozens of IS members were killed in the operation south of Tal Hamis.

The jihadists "have been using the cattle market as a base for trafficking illegally pumped oil," it said.

IS controls a number of oil fields in eastern Syria and Washington says they provide the group with significant revenue.

The jihadists' black market oil infrastructure has been repeatedly targeted by U.S.-led air strikes.

Missing S. Korean teen tweets: I want to join IS
[ARABNEWS] A missing South Korean teenager suspected of joining the Islamic State

group had a Twitter account, "Sunni Mujahideen," on which he tweeted his desire to enrol with the turban group, police said Wednesday.

The 18-year-old middle school dropout, identified only by his surname Kim, went missing in Turkey earlier this month, and there is speculation that he crossed into Syria.

"Many materials suggest that he was greatly interested in IS, but we cannot confirm whether he has joined them," Chung Jae-il, a senior Seoul police officer told journalists.

If confirmed, it would be the first known case of a South Korean national joining any radical group.

The teen was last seen leaving his hotel in the southern Turkish city of Kilis -- not far from the border -- on January 10.

A South Korean Foreign Ministry official said Tuesday that CCTV footage obtained by Turkish police showed Kim taking an unlicensed taxi, together with an unidentified man, outside a mosque near his hotel.

They got out near a refugee camp in Besiriye, about 18 km southeast from Kilis, the official said.

Police said Kim posted a series of messages on his Twitter account in October last year, asking for help in approaching the Islamic State group.
